Never been here before. Didn't know if it would be packed on a Saturday for lunch, so I made reservations for 12:15pm. My buddy surfs in this area all the time so this was a good spot to try out. Hadn't seen this foolio in a while so it was nice to finally catch up. Jake's is located right by Poseidon on Coast Blvd. in Del Mar. Valet parking is available or you can park on the street. I had phone issues omw here from my previous stop, so I ended up 30 min late for our check in (homie beat me there). Amazingly, the hostess was still able to seat us right away (it wasn't super busy, yay!) at a pretty decent table with a view of the ocean. She was super nice about it, too! Since we were a bit pressed for time, we quickly scanned the QR code and ordered our food and drinks. Ginger beer and the fresh strawberry lemonade for me...decided to be nice and give my liver a break, lol! The beachside vegan, fries and the crabcake was all we had. Good portions that were just enough. Normally I love crab, and this crabcake was good, but it didn't wow me. It could have used a good splash of lemon on top to make it kick. Fries were alright. Not hot so they must have been sitting for a little while before they got to us. Beachside vegan tasted great. The sauce is what made it! Excellent service by the friendly staff, all of whom are covid prepped with masks. Tables are spread apart for social distancing. Our server was pleasant and quick. Pricing is average for a beachside restaurant. I was going to deduct a star for the slight lack of flavor in my crabcake and for the barely warm fries, but the presentation of the dishes as well as the great service we received earned the 5th! Definitely recommend this place if you love beach front dining, day or night. It can be casual and fun in the daytime, but I'd imagine also romantic and classy in the evening. I love Jakes! During "normal operations" it's one of my secret go-tos for girls lunches and dinners. Today I wanted to take my mom to the beach, cuz she's visiting and it's on the list. Jakes is not open for in house dinning, however they have a fantastic takeaway menu for lunches and dinner on the grass area right next to the "order here" window. The service was spot on fantastic!! This place has the perfect view of the ocean. I didn't get to sit by the window but window view is available if you reserve in advance. Food was great. I had the Ceasar as a starter followed by the ahi sashimi which was super fresh and tasty. My main dish was the sirloin which I did ask for medium well based on the waitress's recommendation which she said medium would be very pink or bloody but I think medium would've been better as I thought medium well was a little too well in my opinion. Overall 9/10 for service, quality and appearance. Worst tipping experience ever! Waitress gave me the WORST experience when tipping 15%, not needed to explain it was not her business what I wanted to tip or even questioning but on top of that she gave me an attitude, laugh at me and made me feel so bad. She proceeds with a "where are you from?" comment, added by a " we usually tip 20% in San Diego", which is straight up discrimination. She gave us a hard time too when we tried to split the check in 3 cards and proceed to explain we can venmo between each other, again not of her business the reason why we needed to do it in 3 cards. A restaurant should never make you feel bad/less at the time of paying/tipping. So unprofessional. It was a shame that the food was delicious, but the waitress through all that impression to the trash with her final service. Management was awesome when receiving my complaint. read more

Also my parents love this restaurant & close to the racetrack! Shared a Ceasar Salad, Top Sirloin, Shrimp, Lobster & Potatoes Au Gratin. All cooked perfectly! I also recommend the $3 Foccacia Bread. The chimnichurri that came w/ the steak paired well w/ the bread as well. We had no room for the highly recommended Hula Pie, but will be back. Jake's is definitely a San Diego gem that is a must-visit! PARKING: The parking situation isn't ideal, but you have a few options. Firstly, you can try to find street parking, but this can be quite challenging. Second, you can pay $7 for valet parking right in front of the restaurant, which may be ideal during busy times of the day. LOCATION: The location is absolutely phenomenal! The restaurant is located right next to the beach, and the views are absolutely jaw-dropping. You can dine and see the waves rolling in and out from the interior of the restaurant. The views are even greater if you dine during the evening - where you can watch the sunset. The interior is dimly lit, and is the perfect ambiance for a date night. It almost feels like fine dining on the inside, but the biggest perk is you aren't paying fine dining prices - the prices here are quite reasonable. SERVICE: Top notch service! Our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive to use throughout the evening. We went for my girlfriend's birthday, and they gave a nice birthday card and included a candle with our complementary Hula Pie! They make it fun to celebrate a birthday here. FOOD/DRINK: Surfing Steak: A prime top sirloin topped with chimichurri sauce and served with two shrimp, whipped potatoes, with roasted cauliflower. I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked slightly more on the medium side; but still very delicious. The chimichurri sauce was flavorful and not overpowering, and the shrimp were grilled to perfection with a tasty and mild cajun-like seasoning. Roasted cauliflower added some nice balance, and the whipped potatoes were smooth, buttery, and delicious. I only wish we had another shrimp - but overall an amazing surf-n-turf style dish - all for $35. Hula Pie - Absolutely delicious, fun to see, and quite big! The macademia nut ice cream was creamy, and the mac nut bits added some delicious crunchy texture. I also loved the cookie crust - slightly sweet, chocolately, and crispy texture that complements well with the ice cream. The hot fudge is a little sweet - but in small amounts, tastes great with the ice cream. This dessert is pretty big, you can probably share it amongst 3-4 people. CONCLUSION: This place is an absolute San Diego gem. It's a perfect place for date night, or a nicer meal to have if you're a tourist in the area. First let me tell you, use valet parking $7 cash only. Do not park in the ACE parking lot across the street because it's a dang $25! Second, make a 11:30 reservation to get a good seat by the window for closest ocean view! Even if you don't like us, we made reservations at 12, it's still cool in there. I've been to Dukes in Honolulu & it's in the same family of restaurants, very similar inside! Lunch with a view! Took my father for lunch today, and he really wanted a window seat. Front staff (hostesses) Kendell and Kalena were so kind and accommodating. We waiting about 15-20 minutes passed our reservation, but it was well worth it and we understood that there was a wait for our request but they made it happen. In that time of waiting a waitress named Beth checked in with us to see if we needed anything. She noticed us waiting in the lounge area and checked in a few time. She didn't have to do this especially since we weren't her table. She made us feel so welcomed and I even asked her if she was the manager so that I could compliment her customer service skills. When she said no I was surprised how much she went out of her way to be so kind to us. Our waiter Tre was attentive and the food was delicious. I will start off this review by saying I personally cannot stand lukewarm/cold food, and every single item I got here besides the bread was lukewarm to tepid. Garlic Parmesan bread roll: excellent, highly recommended, piping hot buttery and flavorful. Seriously one of the worst dinning experiences I've ever had lol Our server was as middle aged-older women who you can tell is completely over the service industry and needs to retire, spoken from a server. Management, I'm sure you know who this is. We asked if they had specials (after being told on the phone they did) and got a harsh NO, then when we asked further we were told the specials for the day. I got a milky white espresso martini that I choked down, then saw the table next to me get a proper espresso martini served and just wanted to know why it was so different. She literally grabbed the server at the table next to us to talk to us and had to go to the back patio to breath... over that? She obviously didn't even make the drink, it's not like I'm yelling at her. Then she comes back and says he got a classic espresso martini, and I got the one on the menu. I say okay so what's the difference, she says the coconut cream or milk (can't remember the exact word) and I just drop it because her attitude was crazy. Just as a tip cream or milk and syrup are two extremely different things. On the menu it says syrup, so say I have a dairy allergy and drink the cocktail I would have an allergic reaction, If it's actually syrup they are serving and I had this hypothetical allergy I would have been fine. So idk update the menu if it is a cream or milk or just be honest and say my drink was messed up. If I may be corny, consistency is key. Not to mention the Negroni I ordered after (because that's a cocktail impossible to mess up) was in a martini glass. Like, what? You can't just ride off the view, put in some effort. read more

Had an amazing dinner here for restaurant week. We got lucky and were sat right in front of the water! Our server was incredible and all the courses were timed perfectly. The first 2 courses were full-sized as well so it was a great deal! The Brussels Sprouts and the Ribs were our starters for the night and both were delicious. The Brussels had some sauces that blew me away, it was so unique and flavorful. The ribs were fall of the bone tender and the BBQ sauce that came with it was perfect. Next was the Filet Minion, cooked perfectly and came with a delicious potato gratin. I wasn't the biggest fan of the reduction it came with but it wasn't a dealbreaker. Had to get a Mai Tai while I was here too, one of the best around. The Hula Pie was the obvious choice for me when it came to dessert (SO GOOD). Came here for a business dinner. We all had a wonderful time. It certainly was loud and busy, but it didn't bother us. Servers were great and had good recommendations for some of us that were undecided. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. So it seems you can't go wrong with any choice. Also to have the sunset right there as you're enjoying your dinner is a nice touch to your evening. I don't have any pictures as we were all enjoying the company and conversations. Jake's is one of the few restaurants located right on the beach, and of course, has the great beach view, vibe and atmosphere. The dining area is enclosed, no open patio, and was a bit noisy. We started with the Mixed Seafood Pot. It was quite good. The broth was great, by itself, and was comprised of a very flavorful light tomato and herb base. The waitress rightfully suggested a $3 side order of Focaccia bread. She was spot on! The crusted garlicy herbs of the Focaccia bread really accentuated the broth flavors when dipped! There were 2 types of fish (ample portions) and the usual shell fish. All were good in their own right, even though they were over cooked. The Seared Scallops were also tasty. They were seared well on both sides and cooked to the correct opaqueness. The vegetable medley was seasoned and cooked well. The Hula Pie was a very basic vanilla ice cream cake with oreo crust, covered in fudge sauce. It was good, and was a large portion. You should make reservations. Jake's is busy even on the weekdays for lunch. These entrees were quite good and worth seeking out. read more

This was my first visit here. Apparently someone else took our initial table and said they were me which was odd but another one by the windows opened up fairly quickly which was great. The server was kind to try and accommodate us as I had an out of town guest. They forgot our appetizer but comped us a dessert to make it right. We ordered the ceviche which was not what I was expecting really but ok. Plenty of chips for the portion. I tried the Archiote roasted fish which had a lovely sauce it's served on some nutty rice like dish with roasted squash. Delicious, and my friend enjoyed the fish and chips. She took a cheesecake home for her Aunt and we attempted the Hula pie which is a lot for two ladies. I would say perfect for a group. Very rich and decadent. Party of 2 for brunch ordered the ceviche, 2 fish tacos and a Vegan Beach Bowl. Ceviche was absolutely delicious right amount of fish, citrus, onion, cilantro and guacamole. My friend had 2 fish tacos and they were excellent. I had the vegan beach bowl full of fun chopped vegetables loved the fresh herbs they put in the dish. The sauce was a bit too salty in my opinion. But the size of dish and all fresh herbs & veggies & noodles made up for it. The service was outstanding hostess was polite and welcoming. We came on Christmas Eve and we weren't able to make a reservation, but shockingly didn't have to wait to be seated. It's a nice, classy ambiance without feeling too stuck-up. It's right next to the ocean, so I'm sure it's a beautiful view during the day. - Ahi poke stack: Such a delicious and light appetizer. There was a lot of ahi poke, so really load up those wonton chips. - Seafood chowder: I'm not a huge fan of creamy soups, but I tried a couple sips of my dad's chowder and was surprised by how much seafood was in it. - Sea bass: This was one of the specials for the night and I wish I remembered the details! I believe it was supposed to have a curry flavor, which wasn't too overpowering. - Achiote roasted mahi mahi: I've had pretty meh experiences with mahi mahi in the past. If it isn't cooked well, it can be really tough. However, the mahi mahi was really tender and tasted great with the light and refreshing farro. - Mixed seafood pot: You can't go wrong with this dish. Make sure you get a side of foccacia rolls with it to soak in all the extra sauce. - Passion fruit soy braised short rib: This was an interesting savory but slightly sweet flavor to the short rib, which was also very tender. Pretty decent sized portion. Now on to dessert... - Hula pie: You literally can't go to Jake's without ordering the hula pie. We sat near the kitchen and just saw slice after slice coming out. You can't go wrong with an oreo cookie crust and ice cream, you really can't. Our server treated us to a seasonal hula pie that had cinnamon ice cream with a ginger snap cookie crust. I wish this seasonal pie was on the menu permanently because it was delicious! We really appreciated the wonderful service, which made this meal even more memorable. The location, the ambiance, the drinks and the food were amazing, impeccable, unbelievable, the list goes on... They only have valet parking, but we were able to get a street spot pretty easily. The restaurant is right on the beach, next to a community center and a park. We got there a bit early so we walked around the beach a bit. Very pretty. This would be the perfect place to watch the sunset. We were unfortunate enough to be there when it had rained so the sun set behind a thick set of clouds. The service is great. We were seated kindly, our server was warm and welcoming. She had good recommendations and made sure to check on us frequently. The cocktails were really good. Interesting mix with the specialties. The food was awesome. I wouldn't call this place "Hawaiian" or even "Hawaiian-inspired" (I grew up in Hawaii) but I would say it's upscale, Southern Californian with an Asian twist. came here for post New Year's lunch with the whole family - I tried to make a reservation for 7 of us but their website didn't allow parties over 5 to reserve online AND their phone number was disconnected. this was incredibly inconvenient as they had no other way to contact them. thankfully I just made a reservation for 5 online and then in the "special instructions" I requested that they increase our table size to 7, and they were able to update the reservation. food and service was great. I wouldn't say it's exceptional but it was satisfactory. half of us got the achiote fish and the rest got fish and chips and the seafood pot. for appetizers, we got brussel sprouts, ribs, and calamari. the portions were pretty small for sharing, so that was a little disappointing, but it was still tasty. I think the crowd favorites were the Brussels and seafood pot. oh we also got the garlic ciabatta rolls too, which were good but could have been more garlicky. the achiote dish was quite bland. it just tasted like unseasoned mahi mahi, and could have been better if there was a lot more of the sauce. the batter on the fish and chips was stellar. super thin and crispy so that it didn't overpower the fish. the tarter sauce was great too! for dessert, we got the infamous hula pie as well as the peanut butter torte! both were fantastic and must have! if we come back again, I'd like to try their dinner menu. it looks a lot better with more appealing options compared to the lunch menu. read more

We went to Jake's on a rainy day to watch the waves and rain. The ambience of this restaurant allowed for a beautiful, relaxing experience. I had the mahi saffron fish and it was absolutely outstanding! My husband had the tuna Cesar salad. He did feel the tuna could have been trimmed better as it had a fatty outside layer but the flavors were very good. Our servers were helpful and there when we needed them. This is not our first time at jakes. And because we usually love this place, we planned a whole gathering there to celebrate. People flew and drove from everywhere. We came here with a party of 17 for an anniversary celebration. The team was extremely rude from the get go. The host was very rude to me and our party. At first, when i asked if i can add 3 people to our party, he gave me a very sassy attitude (maybe cause i was not white?!). I told him it was last minute cause one of the ladies arrived early from her travels. He rolled his eyes at me. :) Then, when he magically didn't mind anymore, he said he will accommodate but need to draw paperwork?! Anyway, we were finally showed to our table and one of our guests had a kid sleeping in a stroller, he again, gave us a very bad attitude: strollers are not allowed, wake the kid up?! The service team was nice, we were given menues without any prices on, very limited and ended up with a 1000$ bill (which is fine) but a menu without prices? Finally, our kids were at the balcony staring at the beach and seagulls, with other kids (white if that matters, apparently for the staff it does). One of the toddlers climbed imitating another kid from another party, the host AGAIN came only to the one parent - that is not white (already scolding and removing their kid- who is 3) and said : we have a main exit, you can go this way(why would we even get out climbing a balcony?). There are ways to do customer service. This is not it. This restaurants front staff lacks empathy, basic human skills and kindness. If you do not want people with kids, please have that mentioned on your website or when we call. This place is not people of color friendly:) read more
