Really beautiful views... Always a treat! Three of us each had a specialty cocktail, all got thumbs up. Calamari appetizer and beet salad for starters, fish tacos and fish and chips for our lunch entrées. Some of the food seemed under seasoned to us. Reminiscing about Christmas in Hawaii led me to Jake's. If you're familiar with Duke's or Leilani's in Oahu and Maui, then Jake's will put you right at home. Perched on the water in Del Mar sits a lovely restaurant with stunning views, warm friendly servers and a great menu. And Hula Pie. Dinner comes with a complimentary basket of warm rolls served with butter and Hawaiian sea salt. Simple yet delicious. I ordered the braised short rib which was served with mashed potatoes and broccolini and the rich gravy from the beef. It melted in my mouth and left me wanting to lick the plate. My husband had the filet served with scalloped potatoes. It was good as well but didn't top the short rib. We had to get the Hula Pie and a cup of coffee to finish the night. If you've never had it, then ordering it is a must. It's a tall tower of vanilla mac nut ice cream on a chocolate crust with glorious warm fudge on the bottom and top. Celebrated my son's 21st birthday here and it was a wonderful experience. The hostess were all very friendly and wished my son a happy birthday. We had a nice view of the ocean and sunset at our table. Our waiter was very personable and always checked on us to make sure we were happy and advised and apologized for the long wait for our entrees (over 40 mins) but we were fine because he never left us wondering where our food was. My requests of not seating us in a booth due to a handicap was not taken seriously and instead we were seated in a booth by the noisy bar. Hostess was not charming and could care less that we were having issues with our seat and comfort. Food was only okay, too many sauces and things going on in general for what could have been a simpler dish (the shrimp mole and Braised beef). So this is a total tourist spot, but that doesn't change that it is lovely. I love the openness and wood beamed ceiling, as well as the decor. We had a reservation, which was a good thing since the restaurant was packed on a Sunday evening. We sat at the bar for a cocktail. The barstools are awful - too closely packed together to be able to manipulate, as well as uncomfortable. After a drink, we were led to our table. We were able to get an ocean view, but it meant sitting side by side at a cramped table in a very noisy room. The service was solid, but unimpressive. Same with the menu, I ended up swapping the sides with the Sam and I ordered because they were distinctly lackluster. When my dish came, it was the same story. The salmon was perfectly cooked, and a generous portion. However, the chutney on top was far too sweet. I ended up scraping it off. I followed my meal with the salted caramel crème brûlée. The presentation was truly awful. It was in a wide dish rather than a traditional crème brûlée ramekin. It looked like some sort of overcooked sauce meant to serve with a meal. The brûléed top was well done, but the custard was a little grainy, and due to the caramel the color was genuinely unappetizing. It was also too sweet. I had a much better meal at Poseidon next door, and the view from their patio was far superior. read more

Jake's offers that nice coastal dining in Del Mar by the water! This place first caught my eye in Del Mar when they were at a food festival at Del Mar Races about 5 years ago. I was hooked at first bite lol. I came by Monday night and did local meter parking nearby. The gloomy cloudy evening was a bummer as there was no sunset, but that's okay still a pretty view of the waves and vibes inside. DRINK: Orange Blossom Margarita- delicious drink! FOOD: -Duroc BBQ Ribs- finger licking good.. awesome side rib sauce! -Sea Salt Vinegar Chips- yum crunch! -Baja fish tacos- were alright, I liked my ribs more! The service was great and I enjoyed my ribs which were my favie. Although a little price,y but delicious for the atmosphere and Del Mar coastal scene. There are TV's for those looking to dine at the bar and Happy Hour is all day on Mondays!! Came here for a lunch date on a Sunday afternoon. It was quite busy. The parking lot appears to be valet parking only which was fine, however, we were not able to get into the parking lot. There were open parking spaces but the cars in the lot were jammed up waiting for the valet to move them into the spaces. This resulted in a line of cars backed up on the road outside the restaurant and many angry drivers who were not going to the restaurant trapped behind them. Those drivers honked, cursed, and one even pounded the hood of a car waiting in line as he drove past. It was turning into a stressful situation. Luckily there was a pay lot across the street which we were able to park in but unfortunately we had to pay a $20 fee! Once inside the restaurant we were greeted by friendly staff. We were placed at a window seat, wow! What a view! It was a beautiful day and the breeze was so nice coming through that big picture window. We started with The famous Mai Tai. Let me tell you, this is the best Mai Tai I've ever had! The rib appetizer was very good. The meat falls right off the bone and is so juicy and flavorful. I had the fish tacos and they were very good. It was a very nice lunch and very friendly wait staff. If it weren't for the parking lot issue I would have given five stars read more

Beware of nostalgic trips to places you liked pre-COVID. First impressions are good - you can't beat being on Del Mar beach. 2nd impressions less so. Drinks menu huge. No happy hour menu , no pupus. Cut down menu. My wife will always order lobster if it is on offer. It was but only aS an add on to full dinner. The cheeseburger was not good... And the lobster tail rubbery. I ordered a pan baked 1/2 chicken. It was a desiccated offering with semi-done scalloped potato's. The whole thing was smothered in a vinaigrette. Definitely don't do that. We came to celebrate my hubby's birthday yesterday and had the most wonderful dining experience. We got seated at one of the best tables in the restaurant with an amazing view of the beach. Everything we tried were delicious. The lobster tails were cooked to perfection! They were able to accommodate my husband's request, thanks to our awesome server, Jackson, overall nice guy and very attentive. He made my ohana and husband's birthday celebration extra special! Make a reservation if you want a beach side table with the perfect ocean view. If you don't get a table by the window, you will still get great views of the ocean waves, surfers, and sunset. Valet is good, the hostess is friendly and prompt, the servers are very well trained, courteous, and great customer service. The bar area is off to the left as you walk in, restrooms to the right. The views of the ocean are spectacular. There are tiers of seating and all are good. The food is delicious, appetizers, main courses, desserts, and drinks. The chef is amazing! She was friendly, professional and pleasant to work with. She had great suggestions too which we enjoyed and appreciated! An ocean front restaurant using its views to cover for its mediocre food, Jake's is now a hard pass from our family. There was nothing noteworthy, memorable, or even good about the food: we ordered the special with trout, the achiote fish, the shrimp "scampi", and the mixed seafood pot. I'm not convinced that there is any salt used in the kitchen, because we had to ask our waitress for a salt shaker right after tasting our food and spent the rest of the meal passing it between our party of 5. For a nicer restaurant pricing their plates around $40 each, this is hugely disappointing. Pro-tip: pick up food from your favorite restaurant and bring a picnic blanket to Del Mar, because I can guarantee that you'll have a better food experience that way than if you came to this restaurant. read more

THE SERVER GETS 1 STAR, AND THE FOOD GETS 2 STARS. Although I must say that the location of place and the scenic view is 5 stars, our server wasn't really genuine. You can definitely sense the vibe that she was just forcing herself to serve me and my parents. We asked for steak sauce, which it should only take less than a nano second to get - plus the fact that she walked by our table a couple of times already and then said "it's on its way". I can't believe just grabbing us the simplest thing would take forever to get. As goes for when we ordered our Hula Pie. She was carrying it along with other things in her hand and we were her closest stop but she literally walked passed our table with our Hula Pie and then back tracked to our table! My parents and I are Filipino and even my parents were sensing racial profiling from this server since the majority of the crowd was Caucasian. Unfortunately, I didn't get her name because she never introduced herself like a normal server should. The only best part of this experience was the HULA PIE. Jake's is one of my favorite places to dine when I'm in Del Mar. The restaurant's main sitting room is pretty meh. Please be sure to ask to sit near the windows or have a corner table. Since Jake's is right on the beach the view is spectacular. If you can plan to be seated while the sun sets it is truly breath taking. *hint hint* to anyone planing a date, it blew me away. The food is always pretty solid. Unfortunately last time after some amazinggg appetizers our entrees were seriously lacking salt which was a bummer. We loved the location! We were in town for a car show that my fiance's car was entered in so we wanted somewhere with a full bar & a nice ocean view. Well we stumbled upon Jake's & the view did not disappoint. We didn't realize we were there during "restaurant week" so their menu was kinda weird with strange small portions but everything we ordered was yummy. Our service was extremely slow but the view helped make up for the slow service. I would try it again, just not at brunch time in the middle of restaurant week! read more

We had an excellent dinner just as the sun was setting last night. Entered to a lively but elegant bar scene and were seated at a front row table for four. The wait staff was super friendly as the waiter said my name is Steve and I will be dining with you tonight. He was really attentive and kept us informed as to the demise of the Seahawks as the sun was setting., especially n the Seahawks run. Every dish was just plain excellent. Our apps consisted of deep fried calamari and ceviche. Drinks all around were generous and delicious. The main dishes were portioned appropriately. Two of us had the short ribs, with myself dining on the seafood pot (cioppino). The broth was excellent. I really loved the atmosphere as it was a gentle hum that we didn't need to shout over. The sunset quickly and we were able to capture albeit a snapshot of a San Diego dusk. Spectacular! Highly recommend. Parking was valet $6. read more

The views from the restaurant are absolutely beautiful! Julien was our server, and he was amazing our whole visit. He recommended tasty drinks, and was super knowledgeable about celiac disease. Julien was able to walk us through the menu, so kindly, to find some really great options. We had the ceviche, the mixed seafood pot (without the fried leeks to make it gf) and the jumbo crab cake. The spicy cucumber and the guava margaritas were delicious also! I got the seafood stew and it was good! Plenty of seafood and flavor was a smokey creamy broth. My friends got their breakfast items and they said it was good. But the best thing was the hula pie! Wow. This place is a dream. Made a reservation for 4 (when they open for dinner) for a window seat. Got there a bit early, valeted the car and grabbed a seat at the bar. Enjoyed a delicious cocktail (can't remember the name but it's like a mule but with pineapple) and the seafood chowder as an app. Highly recommend. When our table was ready and we got to sit down I was speechless. What a VIEW!! I thought the inside was gorgeous but the view just really did me in. Ordered the surf and turf plus a lobster tail (because why NOT?) and another yummy pineapple cocktail and it did not disappoint. Highly recommend. Maybe it's because I'm from the desert but something about eating seafood by the sea really hits different. I just kept staring at my food. And then back at the ocean. And back at my food. Had a great experience for restaurant week. Honestly I don't remember all the details since my wine selection had me enjoying myself. Everything I had was delicious from the sprouts, to the steak and side pairings. Even the sorbet was excellent and better than what Ive had at many ice cream shops.
