Jake's was recommended by one of my coworkers while I was in Portland visiting one of our company sites, and I have to say, it ended up being one of the best recommendations I got all trip. The restaurant is within walking distance of downtown hotels, so I enjoyed the walk over while taking in a little of the city. As soon as I walked in, I loved the atmosphere. It has a classic old school feel with lots of history, photos of celebrities who've dined there over the years, a beautiful bar, and a timeless charm that's hard to find these days. I kept it simple and ordered the chef's seafood special, and wow...it completely caught me by surprise. It reminded me a little of crawfish étouffée, but with more seafood and its own unique flavor. It's hard to describe, but it was absolutely delicious and one of the best meals I had during my trip. The drinks were excellent too (sorry, no pictures because I was too busy enjoying them), and the service was friendly from start to finish. I went sloppy and tried the Jake's Traditional Bouillabaisse but first oysters on the half shell and a wedge salad. The oysters were spot on and you really cannot go wrong with PNW oysters. They were briny but great. The wedge salad was out of this world. I would rate this as one of the top wedge salads I've ever had. But then it only got better when the Bouillabaisse showed up. Holy sloppy happiness Batman. When they bring a bib to the table, get ready for some goodness. Then entire experience from the ambiance to the food and service were all fantastic. Not just the stools at the bar. Our server, Anna (Ah-nuh) was so nice. She gave us plenty of suggestions and was super patient. We like to have our cocktails while we take our time deciding what we want to order. The bread was so good. Nice crunchy outside and fluffy soft on the inside with a side of whipped butter. I appreciate this since it makes it much easier to spread. My wife enjoyed her Bloody Mary. I ordered a Boulevardier (not pictured, sorry) and it was excellent. The stuffed salmon was so good. So much flavor. We shared, and they split the plate for us. The potatoes were roasted as was the asparagus. Jake's Famous Crawfish has been around for over 130 years and this was the place I had dinner with friends who live in Portland. Located in the Downtown area we made reservations on OpenTable. Got seated right away at a circular round table. Our server was this super nice lady who knows her drinks and menu items! We ordered a few things for everyone to share and try a little of. Step back in time to the early 1940's to a beautiful time. The place is historic but at the same time very welcoming. The menu items that we orders was fantastic. The service was spectacular. I don't lie, nor do I give fake reviews, if there are issues I write it all out but seriously this place is a definite 9.2 out of 10. It would have been a 10 if the bathroom wasn't so small. But the building is historic so I am sure the owners can't change it because its a historic landmark. I was browsing Yelp and came across a praising the seafood here. I wanted to check it out although I knew I was not going to be able to eat most things here because of gluten and dairy intolerances. By the time I got there it was there happy hour and I was stoked. As a whisky enthusiast I ordered their old fashioned and a whiskey cocktail. Both were delicious. I hadn't been to Jake's Famous Crawfish in probably 25 years, and I'm not sure why. My wife and I were downtown to see a show and decided to eat at Jake's. We ended up eating in the bar. It was busy and had a great atmosphere. The bar with its dark wood and gold fixtures. It was truly inviting. Our waitress was extremely friendly, and the bartender made some great Old Fashioned's. We were hungry, so we ended up ordering several things. We started off with the Prawn Cocktail w/ a Horseradish Cocktail Sauce and the Shrimp Louis Salad with Thousand Island Dressing. All the seafood was fresh, and it was a great start to our meal. For dinner we had Jake's Etouffee that was off the happy hour menu. This was Crawfish Tails, Chicken, Shrimp in a Spicy Nut Brown Sauce with rice. It tasted amazing! The sauce had the perfect level of spice, with an impeccable balance of flavors. I've had this dish numerous times in Louisiana, and it was right up there. We also enjoyed the Seafood Fra Diavolo. This is Prawns, Scallops, Clams, Mussels, and White Fish in a Spicy Roasted Garlic Tomato Sauce with Creamy Mascarpone Polenta. This dish was exceptional! The waitress told us this dish was not always available, so glad we ordered it. The seafood was fresh and prepared flawlessly. Nothing was overcooked. There was a great balance of flavors. The flourless chocolate cake tasted great as well. If you haven't been to Jake's Famous Crawfish in a while, do yourself a favor and treat yourself. It didn't disappoint 25 years ago, and it certainly didn't disappoint the other night. We will certainly be back soon. If you find yourself in Portland and feeling even vaguely civilized or nostalgic or hungry, you might do well to stumble into Jake's Famous Crawfish. It's a place that smells of butter and ghosts. My group of roughly thirty human beings was herded into the Cascade Room, which is as charming as a parlor in a novel your grandmother once read. Old wood, old mirrors, old lamps, old Portland. Also, quite warm. Not metaphorically. The kind of warm that makes you wish for a personal iceberg. They brought in fans, bless them, but the laws of thermodynamics held firm. Appetizers were laid out on a table in the back like an offering to the gods of appetite. The crab cakes were sublime, crisp and rich, like something a coastal millionaire might dream about. The calamari was fried to that rare balance between rubber band and cloud. Brie and crackers and vegetables rounded it out. And there was sour cherry jam. Why sour cherry jam? Because somebody at Jake's is a poet. Now. You go to a place that proudly calls itself "Famous Crawfish" and find no crawfish on the menu for your group event. This is the sort of irony I've made a lifetime of noting, but I forgive them. I selected the stuffed salmon and it was a triumph. The crab and shrimp were tucked inside like hidden treasure and the whole dish sang. My clam chowder was warm and briny and satisfying. My tablemates had steak and pasta, and reported them both to be rather good. The pasta was a veritable mountain of boiled carbs covered in fresh vegetables. As a vegetarian, she did not seem disappointed despite it being the only choice. The steak looked tasty, but the young woman who ordered it's face had the forlorn melancholy of someone who now knew they made the wrong choice. So it goes. The bar is a well-oiled machine of mischief. I had a Bulleit Old Fashioned, executed perfectly, which is to say it made the world seem kinder. Someone else ordered something called the Aromatized and Smoked, which arrived like a magician's trick involving bourbon and literal fire. It was smoked at the table and smelled like the kind of bad idea that turns into a good story. Dessert was key lime pie. It was above average but not worthy of the reputation that had preceded it. As for service, we had a two-part system. One half was a seasoned professional who moved through the dining room like she had done it since childhood. The other half was a young man who seemed surprised each time he successfully carried a plate. Friendly, both of them, but slow. Not tragically slow. Just... unfussed. In the end, Jake's is the kind of place where you forgive the small things because the big things: the food, the atmosphere, the history, are very much worth it. If you want a taste of Portland that isn't trying too hard to be Portland, this is it. Bring your appetite and maybe a hand fan. read more

"Western food has too many carbs. Not enough vegetable." - my mom Jake, you actually exceeded my expectations. Especially after the waitress let us sit outside, but the table we were directed to initially didn't have seats. Because the large parties next to us stole them all lol. And then especially after we got that bread. I had to give my mom my usual rant about how "appetizer bread" makes zero sense and is a western food scam to fill customers up on cheap trash so they'll order less food that the restaurant has to actually spend money on. Also, when she noted that the spread was not butter. This forced me to give my rant about how real butter is more expensive, so the restaurant uses some vague margarine junk, but makes it in some flowery shape so ignorant customers feel classy about it. But then, I got my chocolate old fashioned, and gosh dang it, I kind of liked it, and it clearly had a lot of liquor in it. Alright, you dodged that bullet Jake. Then my mom got her French onion soup. She thought it was too salty. I decided to taste it and personally, I thought it was fine. Another bullet dodged. Although, I did remark that I hated how the soup was served with chunks of bread already in it, and that the bread should ideally be served on the side. But that seems pretty common in this country and also not Jake's fault. Then, we got our entrees, the pan fried oysters and my crawfish penne. My mom for some reason didn't realize that the fried oysters would be.......fried. Additionally, she asked for no potatoes and double asparagus and the waitress said it was fine. But then the kitchen forgot and gave her potatoes with the normal amount of asparagus. Uh oh, you're on thin ice Jake. She told the dude that brought out the plate that she ordered and was promised double asparagus and no potato. Without missing a beat, he immediately apologizes, leaves and brings more asparagus in only a couple minutes. Then, even though she didn't really want fried oysters, we both tried it and thought it was quite good. Initially, we also thought the appearance of the asparagus was somewhat sus. However, after trying it, the texture was quite good. Dang, that's a lot of bullets dodged. Maybe you should be Neo's Famous Crawfish. You know......after the guy in........nevermind. Finally, I had my crawfish penne. I thought it was generically great American comfort food. It was warm and loving. The sauce was creamy beyond creamy without being too creamy somehow. The penne was soft, but not too soft. Delicious. My mom noted that the menu said their menu was considered and printed every single day with the customer in mind. The cynic as always, I responded "how we know they really print it out every day? Surely, they're just saying that." With a 'gotcha,' she pointed to a date on the menu! But aha, the date on the menu is September 4th. Today is September 8th! "Okay, lol, it's a little bit of a lie." *sigh* Another five star review. There goes more of my street cred. read more

This place was a 1 minute walk from the hotel we stayed at and when we visited Powell's bookstore... we thoroughly enjoyed the convenience and atmosphere here. It's not everyday that we get to eat at a 127 year old establishment! We ordered the following items and arrived here at 8pm. Drinks: cucumber and lime mint spritz, and a cranberry strawberry spritz. Food: Bowl of clam chowder, Jake's ettouffee, and crawfish entree (steamed, and came with lemon, hot sauce, cheese and crackers). The food was filling! We were really impressed with the liveliness of the place, and could tell it's a local favorite. It was packed at night! I enjoyed the history of this establishment and definitely recommend it to first timers in Portland. I'm a fish and seafood lover, and I recently took a trip to Portland with a friend who prefers land-based animal proteins. One day he got lunch at a famous Taiwanese restaurant at Pioneer Place Mall, and it was the prefer opportunity for me to beeline directly to Jake's Famous Crawfish. As an avid history buff, I love the fact that Jake's and its predecessor establishments date back to 1892, making it Portland's second oldest continuously operating restaurant. The building housing the restaurant, the Whitney and Gray Building, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In real time, everything about the restaurant also feels historic, from the dark wood throughout the dining room to the period pictures and decades-old awards adorning the walls. Jake's food is equally as interesting as the ambiance. The clam chowder was solid. The Dungeness crab leg sauté brought so many of my favorite ingredients together in one dish: shallots, crab, mushrooms, and butter. As an added bonus, I also gained a new appreciation for artichokes from that dish. Mac & Jack's African Amber, one of the best-selling craft beers in Washington State, paired nicely with the meal. With Jack's completely knocking it out of the park, I decided to go for the dessert, and the banana cream pie did not disappoint. Service: Professional & truly exceptional! The building dates back to 1892 and it actually feels like it. A lot of the interior still looks original and gives the place real character you don't see much anymore. Service was excellent. Our server Anna did an outstanding job -- attentive, friendly, and had a great attitude throughout the meal. The happy hour menu had some solid options. I ordered the etouffee and while it didn't quite have that authentic New Orleans flavor, it was still very tasty and, for $12, a very generous portion. The oysters on the half shell were decent, and the calamari was the only dish that didn't really stand out -- not bad, just average. The dirty gin martini with blue cheese olives was very good. Brandon, our waiter was very knowledgeable and gave good recommendations, even considering we were the absolute last table for him of 2025. Food was cooked expertly. Only thing I would've said about the étouffée was that it was a little spicy for such a delicate crawfish. Hang out at the bar first, so you can prime the pump and interact with the crowd. Sooo, I says to my gal. "What say we goes on down to the boulevaud and catch the dirigible races?" She's a peach, and didn't give me the what's for, so I'se tooks her to JAKE'S FAMOUS CRAWFISH and did up the whole nine yards, I did. (Go back and read that like a 1930's radio newsreel announcer and you might get the vibe I was going for). We took in the sights at museums, bookstores, and parks then decided to lunch in downtown Portland. Being on foot, as we were, we kinda were limited in our choices to spots that were within walking distance. As it so happens, we peeped down the street and saw the glow of the neon signage for Jake's. We then opted to perambulate on down to the locale (not knowing it was historic, nor that we would be on-the-beam for some good eats). Soon after being seated, our attentive waiter suggested that we try one of the enticing "giggle water" concoctions. Regrettably, we were fuddy-duddies and opted to go dry (opting for iced tea--you know, with prohibition ending only 92 years ago). But...I do hereby declare, If ever I find myself within the confines of these walls once more, I surely, will try at least one of their "al-key-hall" concoctions--for the "dope" on street about their cocktails is that they are indeedly the bee's knees. The vibe of the place is that it is a gas. The walls are filled with a multitude of old-timey posters, and memorabilia from the restaurant's early years (our booth, for example, had a match-box with the name of the place decorating it that apparently was donated by a local family). Photos of actors and actresses from the golden-age of cinema abound, as do numerous original paintings depicting Pacific Northwest landscapes. I mentioned our server, and described him as attentive. Additionally, he was helpful, and kinda fun to chat with, and informative, and professional--at the top of the server game. HIs name is Andrew and he was truly an exceptionally good and memorable waiter (*we both have Tucson, and Hawaii, and U of A astronomy connections.) The food was pretty good too. I can't believe that I have not yet mentioned the chow in this review. So, in all honestly, I would not say that it was fantastic, but our meal was firmly in the category of "pleasant"-- and it kinda had an old-school energy. "Simple" and "effective" are adjectives that come to mind when I think about lunch. We enjoyed our shared salad as it was fresh and crisp and had a nice balance of sweet (candied walnuts), and savory flavorings. Next up came a bowl of warming clam chowder. I snagged a few spoonfuls of it and loved the warmth of the potatoes, corn and large chunks of clams, as they reminded me of my first sampling of chowder in a little town called, San Fransisco years ago. (Yum). Then, we split an order of crab cakes, and this ended up being my favorite of the three--or maybe it was the actually the chowder. Heck, Let's call it a tie--as both were, "Aces". Based on the fact that I am a visitor from the desert southwest (Tucson), it is likely that I won't come back to Jake's--but only because I would want to sample Portland's other culinary offerings. I should point out that when we got home to our Airbnb, we discovered from the Porlandian's that we are visiting that Jake's is well-liked, (kinda beloved, I'd say) ,and it's a place that they go to every now and again. An absolute must for those who enjoy great food and a wonderful dining experience! I came here twice during a recent visit and will make this an absolute staple of any upcoming visit. The food is wonderfully crafted, perfectly prepared and amazingly presented. Everything I tried was amazing but I will especially remember the crab and shrimp cakes and the clam chowder. Prices are surprisingly reasonable for downtown, especially for the quality of what they deliver. The staff is beyond friendly and helpful. They clearly go out of their way to make sure you have a truly memorable experience. And, they strike that perfect balance of being attentive without ever being disruptive or intrusive. Combine all of that with a beautiful and historic room, an amazing wine list, talented and inventive bartenders and wonderful nostalgic ambient music and you have the Jake's experience. A pretty decent seafood place. The crawfish was different than what my wife and I are used to but it was still good. I love the clams here, it was flavorful! I recommend coming and sitting in the bar area, it's a nice vibe in downtown Portland! read more

Ate here for two days in a row while visiting Portland OR after locals recommended it. I sat at the same spot at the bar and had the same bartender both days in a row. Not pictured is the oyster shooter that I also had the pleasure of engorging upon. The beer is a Breakside. Walking in you will be encumbered with the smell of great food and smooth jazz, however I was unable to Shazam any of the tracks because of background noise (in the future I will ask directly for their playlist). The service is not only professional but quick quick quick at least for myself as a solo eater, I was in and out in less than 35 minutes for both appetizer and entree. Their bibs are iconic and I was provided two upon request though I forgot to collect until my second visit. For spending a week in Portland and eating out every day Jakes was by far my favorite restaurant, and I ate some other great food while I was there.
