Ok, I'm almost afraid to post a review about Jake's... So far, this place is like my little guilty secret. Great beef and turkey, home made sauces, and just around the corner from my house. But I want to make sure I tell as many people about this place so they don't go anywhere. The Roast Beef here is top notch! The hard wood smoke ring tells you it has been cooked to perfection. All the toppings are there for you including home made barbecue sauces. The pulled pork is spicy and LOADED with flavor - bring a bib cause' it's going to get messy. Ribs? - terrific! Chicken - Fantastic! These guys know how to cook. We have been getting generous trays of beef and turkey for our parties and get nothing but complements on the food. The atmosphere? Well, lets say they concentrate more on cooking than decorating. If you didn't see the smoke as you were driving up Falls Road, you might probably drive right by. The place was a gas station, or something like that in a former life, and still has that old country store feel - Inside, there are a few tables to enjoy your food. It's clean and very friendly. But when the Ravens are playing on the 70" screen in the fall, all you will see is the game and the incredible buffet they spread out for game time. I have tried this place several times. I would say they are consistently mediocre. Every time I've had the pit beef it has been tough. I asked for rare and get medium well almost every time. Also almost every time I go there the folks working aren't very friendly. I read all these reviews and I wonder if I'm in the same place. The prices are fair but I think Chaps on route 40 has a much better beef sandwich. read more

I had to write a glowing review of Jake's after my most recent visit. As other reviewers have said already, the food is amazing - that is a given. My fiancé agrees that it's the best pit beef she's ever had, and the pulled pork is also out of this world. This past weekend, I ordered food for over 40 people for a party. Jake worked with me from the very beginning to get the amount of food exactly right, and was extremely helpful throughout the ordering/pickup process. He also let me borrow two chafing dishes for the weekend to keep the food warm for the guests. In my family's last minute haste setting up, we somehow managed to put the lid face down into the hot water of the dish (next to the flame). No one realized until the party was over, we lifted the lid out of the water, and saw/smelled the burned plastic handle (not our finest moment). When I returned the dishes, I told Jake I would go buy him another one to replace the one we ruined. He insisted that this stuff "happens" and couldn't have been nicer or more generous in refusing. Jake is a class act, and I will most certainly continue going back for more bbq and for future catered events (now that I've learned how to quickly set up a chafing dish). read more

Such a hidden gem! A friend found this place before she was about to move out of the US, and she brought us here for a real American rustic BBQ experience. From the outside, you can only see smoke constantly coming out from a tent. The interior was nothing fancy, several tables, a TV with sports on, a bunch of men... There were literally no women in the restaurant and we were all offered fresh flowers! Menu is super simple, you only need to indicate what kind of meat you want, either beef, pork, turkey, or ribs (half and full rack). I got half rack of ribs and a beef sandwich. The smoky taste was soooo good and the barbecue sauce was not overwhelming at all (I am usually not a fun of BBQ sauce). The beef was cooked tender and chewy, love it too. Friend's pork sandwich was only ok though, the pork was a little bit dry. Portion of the food was huuuuuge, a whole box of ribs only costs like 9 dollars, and a beef sandwich filled with beef only costs 7. We were all like, how does this place earn money??? Ok folks, step away from the Kool-Aid... While these folks are certainly nice and I would love this place to be as awesome as these insane reviews, it just ain't the case. I could not wait to try this place, but alas after my first visit recently i was really let down. The ribs are country ribs, meaning they are the larger type, not babybacks, which is fine. The problem is they are tough and chewy, not fall off the bone as they aren't cooked low and slow, but simply Grilled, not BBQ. They were also really greasy, leaving a large oil spill in the container. The pit beef was comparable to shoe leather with Way too much beef to bun. Slaw was bitter. Again, i wanted to love this place but they in no way live up to all this hype. read more

If you desire a juice medium rare pit beef sandwich with tender and flavorful meat you will be disappointed. Today was my first visit. My sandwich was heaped with dry over cooked tough flavorless pit beef. It was sliced to order but still brownish grey all the way through, dry, and tough. The Mac and cheese seemed to be Kraft that was overcooked and sat around a long time. The employees were very friendly and gracious. The parking lot was full and customers rotated through, mostly taking-out. I can see why it might make the lunchtime rotation of people who work nearby. Definitely not a place to drive out of your way for or bring the family. Staff were so friendly that I wish them my best and hope that my meal was an exception to their norm. read more

If you are looking for exceptional barbecue, this place is IT!!! Everything from their smoked ham, smoked turkey, coleslaw, and barbecue ribs is delicious. We have recommended this place to all of our friends and family and use this as our go to barbecue. Every time my husband and I go, we get the half-and-half which is half turkey and half ham. And if you're really hungry, we get the barbecue ribs. One thing I wish they had, is french fries. Fries would go really well with their sandwiches. read more

We visited after a lacrosse game. Total hole in the wall, perfect description of Dive! This place had one of the best pork bbq and cold slaw I've ever had. Tasted very NC style spicy and vinegar taste. I love it! Atmosphere is like walking into someone's RV living room and kitchen. The people were so incredibly nice! They made us feel very welcomed and got anything we wanted and told us to eat first pay later. Didn't seem very clean but I felt comfortable there, and definitely needs a women's deco touch. Shout out to Jake's Grill on falls road in Cockeysville and the hard working friendly staff. Jake's catered an event this past weekend for my wife and I. Jake's has catered events for us in the past and did a stellar job. First of all he was on time with the delivery and set up.His staff didn't leave until everything was perfect. The crew asked several times if we needed anything else, but he had it all. We ordered the Beef, Pork, and Chicken along with a few sides: Beans, Mac and Cheese, Potato Salad and a Garden Salad. Of course this comes with all the fixings. His special sauce is out of this world. We had over 50 people and received many complements on the taste and the abundance of food. We even had left overs for take home goodies. Jake's has always given more then enough for the money. When you order from Jake's he truly treats you like family. Was told about place from a coworker, I just had to try it . When you drive up the grills are smoking and employees are greeting you as soon as you walk up. Went inside and was also greeted and told where to font place my order. The football game was on and was told about the buffet for game day, actually there was a packed house sitting down eating. Cozy place right off the road. It was odd as the place looked homey but there was a Ferrari and some other luxury cars parked outside. Smokers are right out front...and the smell is mesmerizing. The interior is simple, just like the outside. I ordered a half rack and mac and cheese. Portions were huge. I ate while watching March Madness on TV and next thing I know...I finished everything. Ate at 12pm....still full at 6pm. The ribs were nicely smoked and had the right amount of sauce. They were not fall off the bone ribs and I think I like it better this way. Found this spot on a whim. Came over the hill and saw the smoke rolling from behind the trees. I could smell it before I got there and knew it would be great. I entered and saw a very small menu, usually a good sign. I ordered the chicken sandwich, turkey, beef, half rack and the Mac and cheese. The chicken on one sandwich was really enough for 3. It was moist, tender and delicious. The beef was perfectly cooked. The barbecue sauce was good enough to eat on bread alone (no judgment). The ribs had great flavor. I wish they would have been braised or more "fall off the bone" type ribs. But that's just a preference. They were great for the style of cook. The staff were quick, attentive and seemed to work like a well-oiled machine. It's a bit of a distance for me to get there but we will be making it a point to go back. read more

Now that is almost enough reasons to stop wondering why it is top rank!!! But there is two more reasons why they are ranked top flight (as there pit beef, pit ham, pit turkey and sausages are equally awesome as the ribs!). 4. The Price Is Right! When you buy a half a rack (with 9-10 bones) for 7.50 or a whole rack (20 pieces) for 15.50...you immediately feel that you won the food "showcase showdown" you look at the food and say "and all that for...wow!!!" And now the most important reason why you must go to Jake's Grill...(drum role!!!...) 5. You are getting great food from Great People! Jake and the crew are just cool cats that love BBQ!!! There is no feel that this is a business (no next customer please vibe...) because for them BBQ is a lifestyle (grilling and chilling my friends, I'm jealous). This vibe makes you feel like you are coming over to a friends place and putting in on some great food. So if Jake's Grill popped up as the 5 Stars, top ranked BBQ/Rib spot in Baltimore you now know why! We LOVE Jake's Grill. They know the regulars by name so well as soon as we walk through the door they start yelling out our order. My husband cannot go there without getting the smoked turkey.
