Maybe got a bad batch based on the other positive rib reviews, but to me ribs must be tender and falling off the bone. I guarantee these were not cooked low 'n slow, but rather quick charred over high heat. Jake was super nice and I'll definitely be back for his pit beef. I truly don't know how this place doesn't have a full 5 stars. Was greeted by such a kind and warm staff after a long, rough day. I was given flowers at the cash register and someone gave me a full run down of the menu since I'm new to the area. I got my food quickly after ordering and went on my way. The food was amazing. Small, roadside bbq joint. All I could smell were ribs and I was in heaven. They have about 6 menu items to choose from, which is good because it means they do those 6 things really well, underway of 50 things mediocre. We got the pit beef, turkey and a half slab of ribs and a side of Mac & cheese... those ribs tho!!! They are dry.. meaning they aren't basted and slathered with bbq sauce, all I tasted was the pork, seasoning and smoke.... perfect! I like that the ribs were tender but the meat didn't fall off the bone... I think meat is meant to be chewed. The guys were more than happy to give recommendations and they were super nice and provided us with great customer service. This is going to be my new summer bbq spot! Best pit beef and pulled pork in the area! On some summer days you can smell the smoke floating in the breeze. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it! The sandwiches are HUGE and served to order. You tell them you want rare beef you get it! And enough meat for 2 sandwiches! Sooooo good! Coleslaw is incredible and juicy as well. UPDATE: Since first review I have been back numerous times. Sometimes it is to pick up a dozen orders for co-workers. It's only gotten better. They are great with large orders. The beef is by far the best I've had in Baltimore. Definitely go for rare or med-rare. Turkey is moist and mildly smoky. Red pepper flakes in the pork have been dialed back - the balance is much better. Still need to try the other items. Employees are always super nice. My only complaint? The BBQ sauce isn't homemade. Perhaps I should start selling them mine! (If I know in advance that I'm going, I'll make a batch of Southern sauce first...). read more

This place doesn't look like much, inside or out, but it's a true hidden gem. Their sandwiches are ridiculously oversized, and their quantity is somehow surpassed by the quality. They're good. My wife and I just stumbled upon this place today as we were heading down Falls Road. We live right around the corner in Mays Chapel, but neither of us had ever noticed it before. When I saw that it had 4.5 stars and 100+ reviews on Yelp, my eyebrow was definitely raised. I'm always on the hunt for great BBQ, and couldn't believe that I had been missing this one that was virtually right in my backyard! While I'm a huge fan of put beef, I decided to try the half rack of ribs upon recommendation from the cashier. My wife had the pulled pork. I also had a side of mac & cheese with my ribs...I was very impressed. I knew when we pulled up and smelled the smokey deliciousness wafting in the air that we were in for a treat. Both of our portions were massive and we wound up saving some for leftovers. The ribs were nice and meaty and had a great flavor. The pulled pork was also outstanding. If I had one slight criticism, it's that we went a little later in the day, and I think that the meat had been on the grill for a little bit longer than necessary, but that's expected. I loaded it up with their delicious BBQ sauce, so no worries there. The mac & cheese was decent. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a nice complement to the ribs nonetheless. I have been to Jake's a number of times and it never disappoints. I had the pit beef sandwich. After I ordered, someone went out and got the beef straight from the pit. Paired with a fresh roll and horseradish, it was delicious. My wife got the turkey which was just a tasty as the beef. The building is not much to look at but the food more than makes up for it. Jake's is my go to for pit beef in the Baltimore area, I have tired others, but I believe that Jakes is the best. read more

If I could give this negative stars, I would. The experience was awful and the food was subpar. Upon walking in, the owner looks at me and then asks if my boyfriend was my brother and handed me a flower - strike one. I then ordered the pulled pork and so did my boyfriend. The owner then told my boyfriend he could not order the same thing I ordered - strike two. After a few moments of confusion that this was actually happening, my boyfriend then ordered the turkey and was told by the owner that he couldn't order that either, because both of us couldn't have poultry - strike three for being an idiot. After realizing that pork was not in fact poultry, he allowed my boyfriend to order the turkey. We got in our car as fast as we could because we couldn't stand to think about eating at that dump of an establishment if you could even call it that. On the way home, I jokingly suggested we throw out our lunch and stop at Ryleigh's - kicking myself now for not actually doing that. When we got home and started eating, I couldn't believe how disgustingly salty the turkey was and that the pork tasted like nothing. The barbecue sauce was OK, but the onions had clearly been sitting out for too long as they had no taste and no smell. I honestly don't know how this place could pass a health inspection. read more

I have passed Jake's Grill many times over the last few years when traveling Falls Road north of Baltimore usually to go to the Oregon Grille on Shawan Road. I always swore I would give it a try, but a bad experience with road-side barbeque in Pennsylvania put me off. Then a few weeks ago I was traveling north and despite the cold had my window down on the driver's side. It was in the morning and all the outdoor units were smoking with one attendant. I could smell that barbeque flavor just driving by. I promised myself I would check Jake's Grill out. Later I went to YELP and read all 50 reviews. I really need not have gone that far because they were overwhelmingly 5 STARS. They were universal in their praise. My wife being a 95% vegetarian, with the occasional backsliding for sausage or pork ribs, I knew from reading the descriptions that Jake's would be a hard sell. She is more the Oregon Grille starched table cloth type and Jake did not have an "E" on the end of his grill. But being the good sport she is, she agreed to join me. "They probably have some slaw I can eat." I had to try the pulled-pork sandwich with slaw and my wife surprised me with "Give me half a rack." She was the second rib into the rack when she swooned and said "These are the best ribs I have had in my life." THAT'S IT , WE ARE CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE. If you want details of quality of the food or the efficient friendliness of the staff just read any write up. I could not have said it better. My wife is already planning eating "en el fresco" at the picnic tables beside Jake's this summer. But I can't wait that long. Save me 2 racks to go for this Saturday the 10th of January. 4.5 stars I stumbled on Jake's Grill one weekend as I was driving by. The smoke from the BBQ enticed me to give them a try. The Food: Beef - A heaping load of medium rare beef in a bun. The smokey flavor deliciously permeated into the meat and noticeable with every bite. There were additional toppings you could help yourself to including onions, tomato, lettuce, horseradish, pickles, and sauces. It was big enough to feed my wife and I, but I inhaled it. A great deal for $7! Time to go into a food coma. 1/2 rack of ribs - Wow. Also a huge helping. The ribs were tender, juicy, and full of flavor. There was a lot of meat compared to bone which was great! My wife could barely finish half of it! A great deal as well for $8.75 (half rack)/ $17.50 (whole rack)! The Service: We took our order to go, so there was limited service required. We went up to the counter to order and paid a the register. Everyone was friendly and patient even when we were indecisive about what we wanted. Overall: Amazing BBQ at great prices! I'm definitely going to be back for more! Half a star docked because I'm not sure about the dine-in situation. It's definitely not somewhere I'd bring a date. My wife is a "interior-design-freak" and when we entered the place, I thought she was going to have a heart attack. It's kind of hard to describe in words, so take a look at the pictures! I've driven past the smoker in the gravel parking lot, wondering whether this is an automotive repair place, or some other sort of place. Turns out, it's a pit beef place, very reasonably priced, and the food is superb. I almost don't want to tell folks about it, but dude... it's awesome. Ribs, pulled pork, chicken, sausage, sides of mac n'cheese.... The portions are generous, and the guys are super friendly, too. Ladies get a flower from Jake, and on your first visit, your soda's on the house. :) There are picnic tables under the trees, near a little brook that winds past the building in which Jake's is housed. There are no signs. None! Just drive along Falls between Padonia and Timonium, and look for the a little white house with a battered barbecue smoker thinger on the edge of the parking lot. You can eat there (tables inside, plus the two picnic ones outside), or get it to go. It's well-worth the drive and effort to locate. I decided to stop here based on all the rave Yelp reviews. I am a BBQ fan and I haven't found anything close to home that has knocked my socks off. Therefore, I thought this place would definitely be a winner with all of the great reviews. The food was subpar and I was not impressed. This is definitely a hole in the wall spot, which I am surprised by the nice area. The place was just really ran down. However, I decided to stay to give it a chance. While I was standing in line, I saw multiple flies swarming around the lettuce and tomatoes. The guys making the food didn't wear any gloves either. I ordered the pork BBQ and hubby ordered the pit turkey. My pork BBQ was only decent with the BBQ sauce. Without it, there was hardly any flavor. I've had the pleasure of enjoying the ribs, pit turkey, pulled pork and even their smoked Mac and Cheese. It's all very tasty. But the pit chicken will change your life - juicy, tender, smokey but not too much so...wow, it is just that good. The menu, which really is a hand written dry erase board, is above the condiment stand to your left of the entrance. Just wait your turn and give your order to Jake directly. You'll be tempted to order everything just off the smell and reasonable prices but pace yourself, portion sizes are extremely generous. A half rack of ribs completely fills a full size styrofoam container. So much pulled pork is stuffed into a container that it bulges. That phenomenal pit chicken I told you about is piled up a good 5 inches high. There's no need try to work your way down the menu in one visit. Jake's is one of those places that you'll want to frequent often, not only is their food incredible but they are also just nice people. They really do give a carnation to each female that walks in, which is such a sweet gesture, and will let you sample anything to make sure you like it before ordering. The only draw back is they don't have a variety of sides and the sides they do have is not worth getting. They only have 2 sides Mac and cheese (taste like it came out of a kraft box) and cole slaw. Great tasting food. Huge portions. Low priced. How can you beat that? Unassuming, divey set up. The crew is very organized, polite and quick. I especially love their smoked Turkey sandwiches- thin cut, juicy and more than enough for a meal. The condiments are set out for easy self service. Not local to me but near all the doctors offices at Greenspring, just a few miles out beautiful Falls RD from 695 just past where Padonia ends into it. I'm from NC, got a pork BBQ and asked for the slaw ON the bun like home. While this is far from a NC style "vinegar" base, the VERY "clean" as we say, and wonderfully spiced got a good sweaty fire on my face. Delicious doesn't do it justice and truly a rare bargain. $6.50 for the sandwich or a pint to go. $15 for a quart she said.
