Ordered a garlic cheesesteak and a reuben cheesesteak with chicken for delivery. When we opened the steaks, the paper was completely stuck to the sandwiches. When we tried to peel it off, the paper basically turned to mush and blended in with the cheese. When we were finally able to unwrap the sandwiches, the meat looked extremely off-putting. The chicken had the texture of chicken salad/ rotisserie shredded chicken? Maybe that's how it comes on the reuben cheesesteak.. I don't know. I was expecting a chicken breast chopped up with thousand island and sauerkraut? I barely ate half of the sandwich because there was literally no flavor besides the banana peppers that I added. The garlic cheesesteak also had a pale, odd looking color. My boyfriend had to put it in the oven to try to salvage this mushy ball of meat. When ordering by phone like usual I was immediately put on hold, and after waiting several minutes the shopkeep rudely and impatiently hung up on me as soon as I started ordering. Jake's Steaks in Lombard Street is a 100% bona fide sanctuary for die hard Philadelphia sports fans. Be warned, this place gets really jam packed with Philly fanatics during Eagles and Phillies games. In fact, the first thing you'll see as you walk in is a gigantic banner, "You're in Eagles Country." Curiously, I found no video of the place after Game 6...but I digress. Well, now that the Phillies are playing golf, I would recommend Jake's Steaks as a very good and chill spot to catch the World Series, with three large flat screens, surround sound (even in the toilet) and bar food galore. I watched Matt Cain pitched a gem to lead the Giants to a 9-0 win over the Rangers to take a 2-0 lead in the series...woot! Sadly, though I'm digging the place itself, I can't give a strong endorsement to the food. The waffle fries were probably the worst fries I've been unfortunate to eat, and I've had bad ones lately. Not only were they tough, they were also bland and absolutely flavorless. They really need to pump up the seasoning. The chicken wings and mozzarella sticks were very standard, on par with the kind you'd get from the freezer section at Raley's. Now I get to the cheesesteaks: good soft bread but, again, the meat lacked flavor, such that the sandwich was really only flavored by the cheese whiz. I've been to Philly a number of times and I've never really been a fan of the cheesesteaks there either. So when I describe Jake's as serving "authentic" Philly-style cheesesteaks, that's not really saying that much: pretty much soft bread, with mediocre meat and lots and lots of cheese whiz. I'm also not a fan of the value or lack thereof. They charge extra for jalapenos, extra cheese, and other small additions. Plus no fountain soda, only $1.50 soda cans... extra bummer. I heard that a place called "Phat Philly" in the Mission is actually better, so I have them pegged to visit as well. A good friend highly recommended this place and gave me a heads up on what to order. It was a bit past lunch time and I was eager and a little starved as I approached the counter. I asked if they had combos. The gentleman at the counter quickly pointed to their Cheesesteak Special on the menu: 8" Cheesesteak with onions, waffle fries and a drink for 9.49. I said let's do this. While seated, I enjoyed the ambiance of a sports bar. Flat screens boasted a ballgame and then some; a couple of characters happily stooled over a few cold ones and a group of foxy ladies tweeted up to date over a meal. Minutes later, liberty bell rang. I'm by no means a cheesesteak expert, but I wasn't highly impressed by my experience here. I would say just about every part of the visit was average. I came here recently on a day where I took a longer lunch and wanted to watch an inning or two of the Giants game. I was greeted by a lady who really made no effort to even say hello to me. Not that I take that as a given, but it threw my mood off. I was craving mushrooms and beef, so it's only natural that I went for their mushroom w/ beef cheesesteak. I was excited because I've heard good things about it from close friends, but personally was dissapointed when I got it. I'll give credit where it's due: they give you a good chunk of meat. That's always nice. What I found dissapointing was the actual execution of the cheesesteak itself. The bread was soggy because they overdid it on the cheese. I felt like there was as much cheese as meat, and for some people that me work. For me, not so much. I don't mind messy or even cheesy, but I do not like soggy bread. Bread, believe it or not, is one of the most important parts of any sandwich other than the meat itself. Coming from Philly, it has been a battle to find a decent Cheesesteaks. Upon first impression, this place definitely has that bit of Philly vibe. Hmm, maybe I am in the right place after all. We found Jake's on yelp and settled on it since it was the closest place to our location and were in need of food after a day of biking. I went with the steak sandwich and onion rings. The steak sandwich was packed with meat and most importantly the bun was perfect. The bun was soft, warm, and held it's form the entire time I devoured it. The onion rings were breaded with bread crumbs and were like a better version of BK rings. This is the real deal! My credentials: Lived in Philadelphia for six years while attending Drexel University. Also another year in Camden County, NJ.
