First review of 2022 goes to Jam Cafe on Beatty! Loads of great things to say about this place, but not sure if I would wait in the freezing cold for 45min-1 hr again... Maybe put heaters near the waiting area or utilize a virtual queue? IDK whatever works, I guess? After the wait, we were sat and served pretty quickly. Lots of great menu items to choose from and I LOVE that there is a "half" portion option! Opted to go with their Pork Belly Benny [$19-full portion] & loooved every single bite! That pork belly was so crunchy and flavorful. Perfection! The hash brown was a little disappointing though. What didn't disappoint was their Blueberry Pancakes [$17]! That dish is definitely shareable- came with 3 fluffy stacks. The lemon curd was so good & was house made! MUST HAVE! The restaurant was cutely decorated and kind of small inside. The waitresses were nice enough. You do have an hour table limit (as of 12/27/21) so be aware of that. We were getting stares from the manager I think when time was nearing an hour... This place always has a huge line but I can see why. The food is delicious. The staff is friendly and on top of everything while allowing you to not feel rushed through your meal. Everything that have tried have been delicious but our favorites have been the Blackstone Benny (that bacon is too good), Later Tater bowl with pulled chipotle chicken and the cinnamon pancakes. Excellent place for either breakfast or brunch. Staff is great! Ambiance is wonderful. I felt very comfortable seating here devouring my breakfast and my husband's. lol The prices are reasonable. Portions are very big. They take credit cards here unlike other places, they only want Canadian of both credit cards and cash. Ok, they do take American dollars at some places. It's good to call places first before thinking of going. Lesson learned. Be prepared to line for at least 25mins tops. This line goes on until 3pm we are informed but completely worth it. I enjoyed my breakfast and helped my husband with his too. No regrets! If you're walking from your hotel, it's probably a good half a mile by foot as we were. It was a nice briskly walk. I will start by saying that all I did was Google Maps a breakfast spot near my Airbnb and I stumbled upon the best pancakes of my life. They open at 8 and many reviews say that there's a line to get in almost daily so I arrived at about 7:58 on a Tuesday and luckily there was only one couple in line ahead of me. NOTE: To enter you must provide proof of vaccination and your ID!!! I was seated right away and got my order in at almost exactly 8am. It took about 15 minutes to arrive but let me tell you, I could see why. As an American, I'm used to large pancakes but I have NEVER gotten a stack this big and this fluffy before in my life. Pictures don't do them any justice. They're about a foot in diameter and about 5 inches thick/tall. These are the cinnamon roll pancakes and they come with three stacks, the top swirled with maple butter and sweet cream cheese icing. But every single pancake is ribbed with lines of cinnamon. And it was wrapped with a special maple syrup. I almost always finish my plate even when I'm full but WOW these bad boys are dense and I only got through about 3/4 of it before having to call it quits. We didn't have to wait long for a table since it was just my husband and I. I ordered chilaquiles, but I felt that they added too much chips and not enough "toppings". Walked over because it was close to my hotel and was lucky enough to get a table before the serious line started. Small place with eclectic antiques decorating the walls and a menu that I could spend a month of mornings on and still not try everything that sounded interesting. We had a delightful Sunday brunch at Jam Cafe. People are correct when they say there is a wait. Apparently the line begins forming before they open on the weekends with average wait times of 45-60 minutes. We were in a party of 4 and waited around 90 minutes to get in. The wait times were slightly faster for parties of 2. The line is well-organized and roped off along the sidewalk so it didn't block either the entire sidewalk nor the entrances to other businesses. The host/hostess passed out menus for everyone to peruse while we waited. The restaurant is narrow with tables elbow to elbow down either side of a center aisle. Once in, the server was prompt at taking our order. Our server was very friendly. I appreciated the attention the server gave to noting a gluten-intolerance of someone in our party, guiding us on the menu to appropriate options and noting the GF status on the order. Each of us enjoyed the entrees we ordered. I got the fried chicken benedict. I asked for corn salsa on the side as it contains cilantro, and I wanted to taste it before committing to it. My one complaint is that they could have been a little more generous with the hollandaise sauce. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The bananas were caramelized and placed on top. I wish the bananas were mixed with the batter but it was still enjoyable. The best part of the banana was the sauce below the pancake. Our server was so sweet and communicative about a minor mistake in my drink. She even asked to take a picture for us since she noticed us trying to take one. Long story short, I ended up in Vancouver because I was an absolute moron and only realized my US passport was expired the day before my flight for Banff national park. One of the bright sides of my unexpected detour to Vanocuver however was being able to grab breakfast at Jam Cafe. I got to Jam Cafe extra early (around 7:38am which was good enough to be first in line). By the time the cafe opened at 8, the line was fairly long, so I would definitely recommend coming early if possible. I ended up getting the Charlie Bowl which Iis two sunny side up eggs over what reminds me a lot of Thanksgiving stuffing since it's a mixture of crumbled biscuits, sweet ham, bacon, cheese, and gravy. Individually, I wouldn't say any of these ingredients wow-ed me (the sweet ham was maybe a bit too sweet for me/felt out of place), but the combination was pretty good. Overall, the Charlie Bowl was very savory and filling; I wouldn't be surprised if you had enough leftovers for another meal. I should also note that the service sitting at the bar was very good. I hope I'm never in Vancouver for the same reason again, but I would certainly love to come back to Jam Cafe in the future. read more

There's pretty much always a line here (lots of parties of 2) but weekday mornings are really your best bet. I came on a Wednesday at 10 AM with a part of 2, and it only took about 15-20 minutes to get seated. The portions are HUGE. And this is coming from an American. Looking around everyone who ordered the entree pancakes (comes with 3) would only eat a third to half before calling it quits. I saw another reviewer say that truly customize your order, and it definitely seems true. For two people we ordered the chicken and french toast and one single cinnamon bun pancake ($8 for a single pancake + $4 upgrade charge to make it a speciality pancake). This was the perfect amount of food for two hungry people. I highly recommend ordering one full entry to share between two people and ordering additional sides as you would like such as a biscuit, waffle, french toast, potatoes, etc. I still dream about that cinnamon bun pancake, to me this was the star of the show. The chicken and french toast was a very bbq-forward flavor profile, but the more I ate of it the more I enjoyed it. Everything everyone ordered looked absolutely delicious. read more

Make sure your party is all together bc they don't seat incomplete parties. Our server was very polite and efficient. The chicken probably could've been a bit crispier? Just didn't feel like there was a lot of flavor going on. Maybe we needed to add way more syrup to the waffles. You can NOT go wrong with this place. Generous size for the price. It truly feels like the best bang for your buck. Probably the biggest downside is the wait time, but oh man, it is so worth the wait. If it is your first time, going in early is your best bet. Takeout is okay, but not as amazing as eating it fresh in the bustling atmosphere this restaurant has to provide. There is another location in Kitsilano that my fiancee and I frequently visited and it is a bit bigger. If you're wondering "what is the best to order" - everything and anything. There is absolutely no wrong answer here.
