Never had oxtail stew until today. This place was worth the drive, its a little off the beaten path in a small shopping center. The small plate of oxtail stew had 5 meaty bones of the beefy tasting ox meat with just enough savory gravy to go with the classic Southern sides. I'll be back !! read more

I have been going to this place weekly for over a year. There jerk is perfectly spicy. The escovitch is something I can eat once a week and I did. This place is like going to the islands and sitting in your mother house with family. It's all love. Their red pea soup is fantastic. I even like their chicken wings. Having been referred to this restaurant by a coworker, I decided to give it a try. It was okay for a short while. Until my okay experience was cut short by the extended wait times. I've had to wait in upwards of 40 minutes for my order which made no sense to me. Now the reason I gave 2 stars is because of the disrespectful portions they now give. The portions were already small. However, they recently began using different containers which now have 3 sections. These 3 sections are smaller than the original containers with no sections which means smaller portions of food. This is so disrespectful and shows no real regard for customers who don't mind spending money to eat. read more

Everything was just so appealing and delicious. Everything was well seasoned. I strongly recommend the jerk chicken. Not for the faint of heart. Spicy authentic jerk chicken, fals off the bone, tender, and juicy. SPICY. I actually broke out in a sweat. Now thats good right there. I don't care who you ask. This place is definitely off the beaten path, but well worth the effort. Don't let this small place next to a gas station fool you. Blink and you will miss it. If you want to eat it there, you can but but very limited, like only 5 tables. Most of their business seems to be take out, given that our meal were served in takeout containers. Ordered a small oxtail plate and all I got was 4 oxtails for the price of $20 THAT IS A RIP OFF. It looks like they give you big pieces but the oxtails had mostly fat and barely any meat on it. The rice and peas had maybe 3 peas I counted! So basically it was just rice! Flavor wise, it was good & that is the only reason I give it 3 stars! I've had way better! Not worth it in my opinion! Love the food here! I can't give 5 stars because the meat portions are very small. I've been twice. First time I inhaled the small oxtail plate and could've eaten a lot more. Went back 3 days later and ordered the small oxtail again and a chicken stew from the lunch menu. Thinking I'd have the oxtail and a few bites of the stew, with leftovers for a later meal. I ate both!! I admit I have a pretty good appetite but this was unusual. Okay, the 5 stars is because of my bff. He had curry chicken, white rice and mixed vegetables. He was in heaven I attached a picture of his plate. He's a native Texan. I on the other hand happen to be an island girl. I had oxtails, rice & beans, and plantains. Meh not bad. Oxtails was a little tough, rice & beans was okay and plantains was yummy. The food was hot and fresh; securely packaged. I tried the Jerk chicken (I opted for all thighs): Spicy, hot, delicious...With rice and peas/cabbage (all seasoned well). Love this place, they don't miss! Their portions are HUGE and at an amazing price. I eat this at least once a week, going back and forth between the large jerk chicken and the large brown stew chicken. My friends love the oxtails too, even though I don't eat them. My fiancé ordered the wings and similar to other reviews they were like basic wings from any bar that tossed in some terrible jerk sauce. I would not commend the jerk wings. Fries were seasoned but cold. Also ordered 2 spicy beef patties, not spicy at all. Surprised so many reviews said this is authentic, I'd have to disagree. The stew chicken has such great flavor. It's made with onions, potatoes, & carrots cooked to perfection! Only down side is there are many bits of bones from the chicken they use so careful when chewing this delicious dish. I would also recommend the festival (fried dough) as a side. Soooooo good and super fresh a must have. Customer service is amazing. The lady at the counter was so patient with us as it was our first time. The place is small but it does give you that family vibe. Food was so good me and my husband couldn't even speak we were eating so fast. I would show a photo but it would of been a picture of an empty plate but we had the oxtail, jerk chicken, rice and peas, cabbage and a chicken patty with two pineapple kolas. We would never have found Jamaica Cook Shop without Groupon. Their food has heat, flavor, spice and comfort levels that were all very satisfying. We ordered our favorites for our first time. The Curry Goat was spot on and tender with all the little bones visible and easy to remove. Our Oxtails were also good although not as tender; but well seasoned and definitely worth gnawing on those great bones! Both plates came with Jamaican steamed cabbage. I have never had it served the same way twice and the Cook Shop version had small fresh green peas and green bean pieces. Crunchy, it was a nice contrast to the tender meats. The Cook Shop also includes carrot and potato chunks that are scrumptious. They absorbed the cooking sauce and spice and melted in my mouth. The Caribbean rice and peas are straight up and met expectations. Service was counter order and friendly. Most Groupons are dine in only; but this one included carryout. We did do carryout and the dining room was empty when we were there. The dining area is fine for couples or small groups with comfortable looking chairs at 4 chair tables on either side of the room. That was it for this time. We don't live in the area; but it's easy access on and off 635 at Military Parkway and only 20 minutes from our home. We'll be back.
