I recently found myself in the nightmare situation of having AC problems in Bakersfield in the middle of summer. Anyone who has lived here in the summer knows that a functioning AC system is an essential asset. I have a home warranty that I purchased at the beginning of the year just to be on the safe side. I immediately called them and got the run around with another service provider that was up-charging the warranty company which in turn passed those charges on to me. I won't get into the details of circus side show the warranty company put me through, but I will say they lost my business for life. They offered me a cash payout that wasn't anywhere close to covering a fraction of the repairs. I was referred to James AC by a friend of mine and immediately called them after seeing their Yelp rating. I was a bit skeptical when I saw that they only had five star ratings and a lot of them. That is almost unheard of for a service company of any kind. I left them a message and they promptly returned my phone call and set up an appointment for the following day to come out and give me an estimate. The estimate came in over a thousand dollars cheaper than the provider the warranty company sent out prior. I tried to get the warranty company to change the contract over to James AC, which is also a service provider in their network. They refused. This is where James AC gained a customer for life. Amy James is one of the most helpful and friendly people I have come across. For three days she battled the warranty company on my behalf even when it wasn't in her interest because she knew what they were doing was wrong. That is the level of professionalism and honesty you get when you go with James AC. I could tell immediately that they had the integrity you can only hope for when you are at the mercy of a service company to be fair and honest. Paul James and his team completed a full 5 ton system swap out in a single day. Their work was absolutely impeccable. Paul is an encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to AC systems. I shadowed him most of the day just because I wanted to gain some knowledge on AC systems and he could not have been more professional and accommodating. He kindly and enthusiastically answered all of my silly questions. After the work was done I was happy to have gained a new friend. He couldn't be a nicer guy. If you are looking for a fair, honest, friendly and local AC service provider, you absolutely will not find anyone better than James AC. read more

James Air Conditioning is always amazing!! Our AC went out and we called James AC to make an appointment. Amy went out of her way to schedule us an appointment before we were to head out of town. She is just so friendly! When Paul arrived to fix AC, he was on time and immediately started asking questions as to the problems we were having with our unit. He quickly got to work, was able to figure out our problem and fix it! He also noted something else he noticed that wasn't broken but would last us another year or so. Three years after my initial review, I had to get Paul to come out and see what wrong with the air condition unit in the table tennis building behind my house where the Bakersfield Table Tennis Club plays. 30 minutes prior to the appointed time frame, I received a phone call to ascertain the appointment. As usual, Paul diagnosed the issue and it was just a matter of turning on the right switches in the fuse panel box (which was recently replaced) and cleaning the condenser unit in the roof. This might be the 'most unusual' yelp review of James Air Conditioning & Heating, as I ended up not using them right now, BUT here is why....and it makes me even more impressed with their professionalism and integrity that I didn't need to use their services at this time. I had a brand new heating/ac unit installed during the summer (by another company actually), and had not run my heater until just today. I guess I forgot that the technician at the time told me there would be a smoky smell from the furnace unit first time it was run. Once my smoke detectors went off, I panicked, thinking my house was on fire. After the smoke detectors eventually went silent, and the house was aired out, and I realized my house was indeed not burning down (panic mode returned to Level 1) I thought it would be smart to call and have someone come out and service my unit. After looking at all the 5-star yelp reviews for James Air Conditioning, I gave them a call, and ended up talking with Amy. Amy patiently explained the situation to me and completely put my mind at ease. Her honesty and integrity in letting me know there was nothing wrong with a brand new unit doing that 'smokey smell thing' first time being run really impressed me. Let me just say that I can't wait to be a customer of James Air Conditioning & Heating. I actually had to cancel my appointment for a quote on replacing an air conditioner, but I wanted to leave a review regardless. The reason we called James Air Conditioning in the first place was because they serviced our other air conditioner years ago, and they were very frank and upfront about the unit and what needed to be done to it. They didn't try to upsell or scam us, and were just very polite and professional. When I called to make an appointment last week, Amy made sure to inform me that they were behind schedule due to a family emergency, but were trying their hardest to catch up. I really appreciated that, because some places don't feel the need to inform their customers of things like that. So! I contacted them on Sunday before Veteran's Day and set up an appointment for the very next day (Veteran's Day). He was knowledgeable and shared with me the results of his inspection with detail. He made me some recommendations and replaced a faulty capacitor after showing me the readings in the voltmeter. I will be calling again for the next yearly check-up. read more

I rent a house and the insurance that was at the house used James Air Conditioning and Heating. I didn't pay for the service, but would pay top dollar for these guys. They were kind, professional, and extremely helpful. They called when they said they would call and came when they said they would come. I called the owner, Amy, after hours. She returned my call even though she was eating dinner. I told her I had an infant and that if she got a cancelation to move me up. I was supposed to wait 4 days without AC. From the kindness of her heart, she made an extra appointment for me (i.e., had the repairman start his day an hour early) so we could have working AC for our newborn. If you need a regular AC maintenance team or just to get your AC fixed, I highly recommend them. read more

I had them come and inspect my home before purchasing it and Paul came, on time, and personally inspected my ducts, filters, ac unit. He found a faulty thermostat and with 24 hrs had replaced and programmed it. He was very friendly and his office was able to work out my busy schedule and find an appointment time that worked best for me. There rates are very comparable if not better then most in town. I have to say that James air conditioning Service has to be one of the most reasonable and the best. A few weeks ago my mother's AC was not working and I got their referral through the home warranty that she had. They were able to come on a Saturday and fix an issue that others had failed to identify. ( we had called Monarch air and Austin before) They fixed the AC that same morning. Before he left he politely gave my mom and sister an overview of exactly what he did and his direct number just in case something happened again. So now that my own AC went out I called them yesterday they were here today. They DID NOT CHARGE FOR DIAGNOSIS. He arrived ahead of schedule after I confirmed I was home. He told me the problem and charged me the amount that MOnarch charges just for the diagnosis. In under 30 minutes, my AC is up and running. Very efficient, punctual reasonably priced. So impressed with this company and their service! I called and spoke to Amy when my AC went out. She promptly scheduled an appointment for a technician to come out and see what was going on. I was not charged for the evaluation. After the initial assessment, I called them back to service the unit. After looking again at the unit, he determined that it was a defective part and should be covered under warranty. Again he didn't charge me for the visit. So refreshing to find such an honest and gracious company. Unfortunately, to take advantage of the warranty I have to use another company. The fan blower keep running continually without the furnace or ac being activated., that is until the repair person showed up. He said that to properly diagnose for the problem, he would have to catch it in the malfunction and to call him and he would come out right a way. the next day it started up again. He did come right out and was able to catch the problem. Replaced the circuit board, problem solved. read more

Having a broken ac in the middle of Summer is kind of an emergency.. don't ya think??? They didn't seem to think so. Took a whole day to even receive a call back.. and that was after my home warranty called them numerous times. I tried every platform to get ahold of this dang company.. finally I get a call back and they don't have any apts for two days. Okay fine I'll deal... Well sure enough they come out and "fix" the problem...NOT!! Quickly to find out it won't even cool down my house, so of course I call back. Took a couple hours to get a call back (I mean obviously) only for Amy to tell me that oh ya it also needs to be serviced but warranty doesn't cover that... oh but our next available apt isn't for four days. Like come on people why didn't you tell me when you were on my roof that it also needed to be serviced..I have no idea where they get their five stars from because I received terrible service!!! It's no big deal that me and my two young children are in our hot house with no help for four days. Me and my children appreciate you guys so much!!! I was asking friends for recommendations and I was hearing more horror stories and was learning who not to call. Then I found out about James Air and initially sent an email. I received a prompt response and followed up by calling the next day. We set up an appt, which Paul promptly kept. He quickly diagnosed the issue and we discussed several options. He also gave me several tips to help me keep the system working optimally. Repairs were made quickly and for a fair price. My neighbor overheard some of our discussion and was so impressed he is also having Paul come out. I do a lot of my own repairs usually, and only reluctantly hire someone. Have to say I am not reluctant to recommend James Air conditioning, nor reluctant to hire him again if needed. On top of that, he's a nice guy and knows what he is doing. My husband and I have a very old house (1910). The heating/cooling was at least 25 years old. We had had the cooling break down on us in the middle of 100+ weather. It was awful. We got a few quotes b/c we knew it would be an expensive job to replace both units (upstairs and downstairs) as well as the duct work (apparently the ducts were too small so we weren't getting the maximum amount of air circulating, which meant that it took a loooong time to cool off/warm up). Plus we were burning A LOT of unnecessary energy - and paying for it. Anywhoo, James Air Conditioning and Heating came out and replaced our entire units along with the duct work. Mr. James was exceptional. He really knows his stuff and explained it to me in terms I could understand (I told him that he should teach because he can really explain things well). He told me about the different kinds of units, etc., their energy efficiency, prices, etc. I appreciated that he didn't just try to "sell me the most expensive unit on the market." He was very professional, showed up on time each day, never bothered me (I work part time from home), and always kept me apprised of what he was doing. Plus he was friendly and had a great sense of humor. I guess this is a family-owned business. It was obvious that this company takes pride in their work - and it showed. I even got a call a few days later checking to see how my new units were working. They are fabulous! This company is awesome! They were referred to me by my home warranty so I was skeptical. They were a second opinion since the first company was a joke. I was having an issue with my AC unit and the first company told me my AC unit was mechanically fine and they would recommend me buying a bigger unit for 9000. out of pocket with them as a suggestion to "fix" my issue. They never diagnosed the problem with my AC but they were real eager to have me purchase a new unit with them. Thank goodness James Air Conditioning checked out my unit. He was able to diagnose a handful of issues and gave suggestions with what we could do to help the house be more efficient with cooling. I believe it is a husband/wife team so be patient if you are calling. I am sure Amy is busy on the phone with other calls. I personally prefer smaller companies because I feel they are friendlier and they take pride in their work. I would recommend them to anyone needing AC work. read more
