I came here a few days ago for a haircut and I wanted to thin my hair and get layers.I told her I wanted to keep my hair long and she didn't nodded so I thought she understood. She started cutting the dead ends off and doing the layers but she made it very short and I'm not happy about my haircut because I told her to stop cutting it shorter and she said "it's my job not yours stop telling me what to do" she also kept speaking to her workers in her language and looking at me and my hair. Came here as a walk in. The salon was not busy at all but each station was super dirty with hair everywhere. The woman doing my hair did not have clean scissors and I have someone's hair trimmings all over me and I noticed so much hair everywhere on my station. I had to brush the hair off the chair before sitting too. Really just got the ick coming here. Won't be returning until the stations are not cleaned in between people. Since I was just getting trim, I can't imagine how much bacteria transfer there potentially could be for the men who get #1s done/fades. I don't know if they keep their blades clean either. She also began cutting my hair parted to the side and I don't part my hair to the side--she didn't ask at all. I told her that it should be parted in the middle. Then she redid the layering once I told her. I even asked her if she can show me before she trims the longest layers, and she just started cutting away, like girl?! read more

I have been coming here for years and I have finally decided enough is enough. Every appointment I've had. I've always had to wait 20 minutes with James, while another person is helped during my reserved time and if I come 10m early, dude sounds upset and takes a cigarette break. The people who work here are generally friendly tho and if you are a walk in patient person you'll be fine. However, Today was the last straw I had an appointment scheduled, and when I walked in no apology or accountability, my appointment had gotten canceled unknowingly. Previously I called in to see if there was an earlier morning appointment and there was not so I chose to NOT modify my existing appointment and that I would call back if a change is needed. When they realized their mistake the only thing he could say was I wasn't the one on the phone and We can schedule you for another day. That is terrible customer service. Definitely giving them a five stars rating, as I am impressed by how they cut my hair every time! They are a locally Asian-owned business and the heart of the Santa Teresa Valley, and honestly, one of the most affordable options that I could ever find in San Jose. The business is bustling with lots of Vietnamese people, but they are friendly and very helpful and asking you what kind of haircut you want... which I think is an awesome thing, because not many hair salons do that nowadays. They customize according to your needs, and at the same time, they give a sense of community. They're quick and affordable! I love that I can do a walk in. I want a fan of the way my last two layered haircuts were done, but my daughter who got hers at the same time turned out nice! And my son's hair turned out nice too! I prefer when they separate horizontal layers of hair and cut each layer with a pointed position, then separate the hair vertically to make sure it's all even. Some stylists do it this way, and some cut the v shape first, then kind of eyeball the layering. It's not as nice. read more

I walked in and they got to me immediately, and completed my request for a 1 inch trim perfectly. They are also affordable as well. I had read good reviews for James Hair Design, so I decided to walk-in on a Friday morning. Rose helped give me an amazing women's haircut! She knew exactly the style I wanted after I described it (I did not need to give her a photo). She took very great care to trim off all my split ends, add layering and blow dry my hair. At first I was a little nervous because all of the other patrons inside the salon were men getting buzzcuts. But really it is just because the owner, James, does such a good job that most of his clientele are male. The atmosphere is very friendly. I'll definitely be back! It was $35 for my women's hair cut. There is signage around the store saying that even with increased costs of business, management has chosen to keep prices low. I just walked in and I wasn't seated for too long until I got seen since there were 3 hairdressers. I called in same day and was able to get an appointment at the time that I requested. The salon is located in the plaza with the Tutu School. The owner greeted me upon arrival and there was no wait. I sat down in the salon chair and explained my concerns (had a bad haircut at a different salon) with hopes that James could fix my hair. He was very honest and kind. He gave me some tips on styles that might work for my head shape and the condition of my hair. He also fixed the small issue with my hair but he refused to charge me for it. He spent probably 15 minutes working with me but still didn't charge me. It's so hard to find businesses now that aren't out there to nickel and dime, so this was refreshing. I should have wrote this review a long time ago, but I have a little story that happened almost a week ago that really speaks for itself. I work at a restaurant and a customer came up to me and complimented me on my hair, said he was from out of town and wanted to get a haircut so he asked where I get mine. I told him that I've been to so many places across the Bay Area, even some of the more expensive places, but no place cuts my hair as well AND consistently as James Hair Design. I've gone to them for years and they have yet to miss the mark. You can walk in and have your haircut by James or any of the lovely ladies working there and it will always be good. I gave Richard really vague direction, just length to cut and long layers. I am not the most decisive person, so I didn't have crazy expectations for the result. I'm really happy with how the cut turned out! The layers look pretty good and my hair looks so much healthier. Richard is really friendly and took time to make my hair look nice. You WILL get what you pay for and what you get is quality from James and all of his other barbers. Remember to call in and make an appointment, they follow COVID protocols and only have 2-3 people working at a time as of April 2021. James especially is very sought out for as he is a great barber so call in as early as you can. Oh, and magic, self-esteem, and personal expression! It is a comfortable setting with space in between stations; just enough to hear a hum, but not the conversation. James does both male and female styling as his other stylists. It is very comfortable, low-key, and yet cutting edge if you can excuse the pun I was having my facial wax before my hair; their facial specialist is a genius!; James was trying to explain to a client why the look that he wanted was not the right shape for his head. His technical explanation and his sensitivity to his clients emotions made it possible for the new style to look fabulous on the kid. When I say kid, he was under 20. My head is not asymmetrical, so my haircut is not in my hair does not grow in the way that it makes it easy to style it. Every time I walk out of there, I feel like 1 million bucks. Smooth, sassy, and confident; probably due to the professionalism of James and his staff as well as the warm welcome and comfortable environment. Latinas or anyone with thick hair beware please. $35 to get choppy layers. Nice at first besides being accidentally skipped in line but I cried when I saw how uneven it was. The male hair dresser who initially cut my hair was courteous but it was clear my hair was layered in a very choppy way. I had asked for a layered hair cut. When James noticed I did not like it (and when I started to cry) he came over and said it was because my hair was "wavy" and said it was fine. To prove this to me he began wetting my hair to get it straight and blow dried and it curled inward with a rounded brush so I couldn't see the exact edges at the time. It's also odd that James claims the original hair dresser didn't do anything wrong because when James came over he also began cutting more hair. If nothing was wrong why did James keep cutting more hair off? I was crying in the salon and the staff was trying to reassure me things were okay and that my hair was fine. Today I showered and straightened my hair and this is how it looks. I mean if you want layers like this go ahead. I'm just letting you know ladies. For guys they look like they do a good job but not for girls (at least my hair). I feel very sad because I came here to get a fresh look and left with tears in my eyes that made my falsies come off.
