Anyone we've asked around, this place was consistently mentioned in the Top 3, so we definitely prioritized it and glad we did. We went on a Friday afternoon, right after we did the Harvard tour and the Harvard Museum of Natural History so we were pretty excited, plus it was a sunny (but windy day!). Initially went for the truck and it was a bit confusing because I thought we could also order there but he then said to order inside and he's just a truck. Anyway, went inside and saw the live lobsters which were super cool. My husband and I both ordered the large hot lobster rolls with butter, a small cup of clam chowder and a crab cake to share plus 2 sodas. The lobster rolls alone were $38 each so yep it adds up pretty quickly. Come prepared. :) After around 10 mins of so or wait which we honestly didn't mind, we went outside to soak up all the sun and enjoy our food. The lobster rolls were good but I felt it wasn't really particularly tasty, almost lacking in flavor. However you have the hot butter and the lobster meat was pretty generous, so I'd still say it's worth it. We actually ended up really enjoying the chowder as it was delicious. The crab cake was okay, we asked for lemon and once we drizzled some on it, it was so much better. I've been here once a month for the past four months. People fight over the best lobster roll in Boston, but there's no reason to. The winner is James Hook. Every time. I ordered the cold version of the lobster roll, which was a little better than average. It definitely wasn't Maine quality, but I did eat the entire thing. The guy taking my order was efficient and seemed very no nonsense which I didn't mind. He got our order together very fast and actually brought it outside to where we were sitting. The food was fantastic. There were huge chunks of lobster. I enjoyed the mayo roll while my husband had the butter roll. They give you a container of melted butter to pour on which my husband LOVED. The clam chowder was fantastic as well. The potato salad was eh. Those lobster rolls though... we loved them so much I came back the next day to get lunch to go. The second time, I ordered at the truck. The guy let me order a butter lobster roll there although it wasn't on the menu there. I also got a lobster bisque. Again, the lobster rolls were fantastic. The most unfathomable experience. Hook and company was my family go-to spot for live lobster for well over 50 years. I will never return and will spread the word about how they treat customers and cut every possible corner. Last evening, while sitting on the back patio eating dinner at Hook, a man suddenly appeared on the other side of the fence and turned on a leaf blower, which he then placed on the ground. He walked through the fence and told us and the other tables it was time to leave, the place was closed. He walked up to another table and picked up their tray and walked away with it. it did not matter to him if anyone was still out there finishing their meal. I asked if that leaf blower was really his way of telling us it was time to leave and he said yes! So I walked into where the offices are and there was a man sitting at one desk and a woman at another and I said "excuse me, is it really your policy to have someone start a leaf blower out on the patio and tell us it is time to leave? Even if we're eating?" And unbelievably, both of them said yes! And then they continue to have "an I don't really care about you little customer" attitude. No warning that the place was closing and needed to be cleared out at such and such time when we ordered our $250 worth of lobster rolls. No server came around and said hey by the way, we know you're still eating, but it's time for us to go home so you must leave now. As for the food, the owners are incredibly cheap. The mayonnaise style lobster roll is literally just watery mayonnaise and lobster meat. No seasoning whatsoever and nothing like celery or anything in the mix. Not even a garnish of a lettuce leaf. Average quality lobster meat. There are dozens and dozens of better places to find a lobster roll in the city of Boston. Do not waste your time at Hook- they do not care about customers, or I suspect even lobster. They only care about the $$$$$ they can make running a third-rate tourist trap. On the other hand, the lobster roll was very disappointing. While it had a lot of meat, I couldn't taste anything from it. Also it was way too chewy. I suspect the meat was either overcooked or not fresh. And I found a piece of meat that does not seem to come from a real lobster. Rather it looked like a piece of rubber. See the photos. Came in on a Tuesday around noon and there was quite the line to order; this gave me high expectations since it appeared to be very popular. Cashier taking orders was not very friendly, but of course with tip culture these days, they expect a 15-25% tip for standing there and running your card. I placed my order for a regular buttered lobster roll; price was $37 and change before tip. As I sat down to eat my roll, as I removed the foil I was very surprised at how small it was, especially for the price. The roll was smaller than my hand and not very much meat. Flavor was good, but for the price and lack of food you get, certainly not worth it. There are far better establishments for a quality lobster roll that's worth your $40+ dollars. Leaving, I was barely able to throw my trash away as it appears that the trash isn't emptied often. Again, it was around noon on a Tuesday. Can't imagine what the weekends look like. read more
