Seafood platter with fries and slaw

Great food at a good price. What a seafood platter!! Server was great with a sense of humor.

Yep, another shining example of "locals know best" as a bunch of us congregated for a mini cross country reunion. Thank you Bostonian friends for suggesting this unassuming yet memorable seafood restaurant. The restaurant sits just off the waterfront and in an office building. Easy to miss but do yourself a favor and don't! Our party of eight had late dining reservations as we were waiting for one car to arrive from New York. Besides appetizers, our party's orders were probably the last one to be put into the kitchen. So, not surprisingly, with the freshest of seafood being served here, many things became unavailable. Only two fried fisherman's platter, no grilled seafood sampler platters, we were lucky to get the last two broiled scallop entrees. The other four opted for their fresh fresh fish entrees of swordfish or haddock. I sneaked a bite(s) of the broiled haddock and it was truly heaven in mah mouth! Truth be told, I was already pretty full from the most delicious fried clams, calamari, fried haddock appetizers and cocktails. Would I come back here again? Prices are more than reasonable. Food delicious. Company memorable. Absolutely would !!

This place was nothing fancy, but really hit the spot. No fuss breakfast for two for under $12.00? I'm sold. Nothing much more to say here, but I was very impressed. Sometimes you just need a solid place with no frills to get the job done.

*2.5/5 maybe Had high hopes for the fish and chips given that it's Boston, but my takeout lunch did not deliver. Fish was limp -- not soggy by any means but also not crisp either. Fries and coleslaw were standard. The waitstaff was friendly enough and the restaurant itself seemed like a well-visited cafeteria, but this particular meal left me wanting a lot more.

Unless you wanna wait an hour or so, it's best to arrive 30min before they open to beat the rush. It's incredibly cramped and rushed inside, and you may need to share a table with others if you're a smaller party. Food is quite pricey but well worth it. We ordered the oysters (they've got a variety so you can choose), clam chowder, lobster roll, cioppino, and johnnycake. Oysters were fine, but the clam chowder was absolutely dismal. Not sure what happened, especially since it's so highly rated, but it was extremely watery and almost completely unseasoned. It could've definitely used salt at the very least. If I didn't know it was from Neptune, I'd have given it a 2/10. To my relief, the lobster roll was the total opposite. Succulent, juicy, heavenly. It was like being in Maine. The cioppino was also very good. The Johnnycake was an interesting but fun way to end the meal. It's a sweet pancake-like cornmeal covered in a syrupy glaze and topped with smoked bluefish paste, crème fraiche and caviar. I've never had anything like it. Nothing was super overpriced, but I personally prefer next door (Paulini's), which is much cheaper and while it isn't as good, it also doesn't require waiting in an hour in line. However, I think Neptune's is definitely worth a try as long as you're willing to wait in line.

The hostess said th were no availability at the tables we could sit at the bar. We went to sit at the bar, and this party of 5 came over, and they tried everything to move us from the bar, by there actions and there level of disrespect, and it was excepted. I got up from the bar, and I went to the manager, who said his name was Jack. He seemed like he cared, but for us. I felt we was judged from the door. We were a minority couple, maybe that was not what they wanted to see I'm not sure. The money was not the issue, it was the principal. It was not about a 25 dollar discount, on a over 200 bill. There was VIP, that cane in, and he was on top of my back. While we finally got a table. It was just to much. It was very unexceptable. We will never go back.

Food came out in a timely manner, no confusion, no chaos. They were friendly, attentive, and actually knew the menu, offering solid recommendations without overcomplicating it. Managing a group that size is not easy, and they made it look smooth. AMBIANCE: This place leans more Boston bar energy than traditional fine dining, and that is part of the charm. It was packed, a little tight at times, but it felt alive. You are not coming here for quiet elegance, you are coming for the buzz, the movement, and that shared experience of a packed room enjoying great food together. FOOD: We went all in and ordered family-style, almost tapas style, sharing everything across the table. Squid ink pasta, black pasta, fried calamari, grilled octopus, dish after dish hitting the table. Everything was delicious, but what really stood out was the sauce. The broths, the richness, the depth of flavor, that is what stayed with me. I found myself talking about it mid-meal, and I was not the only one. At one point, people were practically trying to drink the sauce straight from the plate. That is when you know it is hitting on another level. You know you're doing a good job when you put much thought down to how you make your sauces and broths. I was impressed from both a top down and bottom up level of culinary experience. IMPRESSIONS: I need to come back here to on more sauces and broths.

The former was very very mediocre; it was fresh but the batter seemed soggy and the sauce was watery and weak. However, the fra diovolo was fantastic. Al dente noodles cooked to perfection and the scallops and shrimps were large, juicy, and tender. I'd recommend it for sure; it's one of those dishes you'll definitely be sopping the bread with the leftover sauce (which you should do anyway). Just FYI, it's not spicy at all. Honestly, Giacomo's was a bit disappointing, considering the hype. But I'd still want to come back, and I'm glad I tried it.

Turns out, it's about what you can expect from this type of chain: good service, very pleasant ambiance...and thoroughly mediocre, overpriced food. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it came directly from Sysco. Previously I had tried the "Legal Seafoods Clam Chowder" sold at Costco, and found it to be very so-so compared to the "Captain Parker's" version sold at Market Basket. I was hoping the in-restaurant version would be much better. Wrong. Probably the most appalling thing about the food here were the fries, which come with most of the dishes unless you specifically ask for a substitute. I was glad that I did, because when I tasted my friend's fries, they were just about the most dry, bland, doughy-like frozen fries you could imagine. Only thing you can do with fries like that is to oversalt the bejesus out of them, and drown them in ketchup. Best thing we (party of 4) had was the Steak Salad---but when the menu says "petit sirloin" you dang better believe they MEAN "petit," lol ... it was about 3-4 mouthfuls tops! Really more of an appetizer worth $15 at most, not the $28 normal entree pricing. Fish and chips were particularly dismal---the fish was tasteless, most likely frozen just like the horrible fries. I've had better fish and chips from humble diner type places like Mike's Roast Beef in Everett, for Chrissakes. Hell, even Friendly's Fish and Chips doesn't seem that bad in comparison, lol. Swordfish and trout were somewhat less bad, but also suffered from the avalanche of cardboard fries. Anyways, now I know: I wasn't missing anything all these years.
