I have to say that giving James Landing Grille a second chance was a mistake. There are positive aspects to the visit like the location, but as we experienced last time the meal was disappointing, again. You would think this would be the priority. My other take away would be that the restaurant itself needs a good cleaning and update, inside and out. Located in Kingsmill Resort property. This restaurant is a bit of a missed opportunity. The good: it's beautiful. It's in a gorgeous location. Eating outside is stunning. Beautiful view of the James River. The bad: the food is mid. The menu is lacking. Which would be fine if the food that was offered was delicious. As you can see from pictures of the menu they have 2 entrees and some handhelds and some apps. So if you don't want ribeye or salmon, you are out of luck. The ribeyes come with chips. Not really the side I want for a steak. The chips were also inconsistent. Some crunchy some chewy. The steaks were also inconsistent. We ordered three of them all medium rare. Each steak looked different. Like not all of them were ribeyes. They were different sizes and they were cooked at different temps. We ordered med rare and got one rare, one med rare and one medium well. The butter on top was too cold to melt and the steak wasn't hot enough to melt it. Boy...if they got a new chef in there who spruced things up with the food you could have a top notch restaurant paired with that view. But the food isn't as nice as the ambiance. The service was good. Oh and the best thing we ate was the crab dip. It actually was really good. The bang bang shrimp were expensive and didn't come with that many. Some pictures lied to us. From the location, outside and the prices/menu on the Web site I thought this was going to be the nicer restaurant on property at Kings Mill but it really wasn't as nice as the restaurant at the golf club, or maybe the same. This one had plastic cups and food came in plastic baskets with that red and white checkered paper. At least at the golf club you got really plates. Both feel like sports bars. I wanted something more upscale for my parents anniversary. The staff was very nice, service was fine. Two people really enjoyed the smash burger, and it was really big. The seafood roll would be VASTLY improved by just buttering the bun and throwing it on the grill a minute. It was an okay seafood salad on a lot of shredded lettuce basically on white bread. Sweet potato fries and regular fries were both good. I would not suggest this for a special occasion. I guess there's nowhere at Kings Mill for that. read more

Cons: Why can't James Landing Grill just get the basics right? Why no consistency? We ate there for the last time last week, when all four of us, had horrible food. Shrimp with vodka sauce was the worst any of us ever tried; it wasn't even close to vodka sauce. Pasta was cooked to mush, shrimp were clearly precooked, frozen and tossed in at the last minute. Smash burger, how can you goof that up? It was barely warm and tasted like it was a reheated precooked patty (think collage dining hall food), fries were cold, calamari that was the BEST any of us every had last summer, but the last three time we ordered it, the calamari was so rubbery you couldn't chew threw it - we sent it back. Cocktails were TINY with lots of ice, wine selection is very limited. As with the last time we visited, the desserts we wanted, were out and not available. Mid-week? It's embarrassing to bring guests and the food is very subpar. From what we have been told, these problems are normal, and the residents know not to dine there. I pity the vacationers, because they have no idea how consistently horrible the food it at the Grill. The overall feel of the interior is tired and worn. Outdoor tables and chairs could use a good power washing, and maybe open umbrellas instead of leaving it to guests? Pros: Staff are always exceptional. Timely, friendly, accommodating. We felt badly returning so much food, but at the premium prices, it's difficult to "just eat it." The views are lovely, but there are lots of other dining options on the river, with much better food. The view while sitting outside was beautiful and the service was good but the food quality was extremely lacking. The crab dip was average but my crab cake sandwich was very disappointing. Karen served our group of 16 at the firepit with ease and a smile. The food was scrumptious and served hot. The scallop special hit the palate with freshness and cooked to temperature. The Crab and Corn chowder was a meal in and of itself. The firepit has great views of the river and parking was easy for those who drove. It was a perfect place for our gathering as most of our party stayed at Kingsmill and we were able to take the shuttle down to and back up from our condos. read more

This is our third visit to James Landing Grille which is part of the Kingsmill Resort. This restaurant sits above the marina and offers beautiful views of the James River across from Hog Island. The menu these days is rather abbreviated I understand because of the shortage of staff. But what they offered was creative and well executed. We started with drinks which were were creative. I had the James River Sangria with Peach Schnapps. It was dangerously addictive. The menu has a few featured drinks but they have a full bar inside with a bartender who can assemble just about anything. For my starter I had the wedge salad. It was unique with Peruvian peppers decorating the plat. I have never seen or tasted these sweet and tart little morsels before. It's hard even to describe their taste except to say that it left me wanting more. For my main, I ordered fish tacos. They were just ok. I have had better and I have had better food at James Landing Grill that I had on this visit. For dessert we had creme bruelee which was outstanding and a nice finish for the meal The outstanding part was the service. The waitress could not do enough for us to make sure we enjoyed our visit and she even took some pictures of our family gathering. Her service stood out in our one week vacation to the area as the best in class. There is plenty of parking at the Marina. Pricing was reasonable for what was delivered. The restaurant is only open Thursday to Sunday which is a bummer for guests of Kingsmill who stay for the week. I sincerely hope that the management of Kingsmill can bring their restaurants and the overall facility back to it's former charm. With a bigger menu and more opening hours. There are few places that offer such a beautiful setting on the James. read more

The manager reached out to me and said they didn't have any other reports of bad food that night so it was an anomaly. I appreciate the customer service but I still wouldn't go back because of the other quality issues. The wine list is still subpar. They're serving Woodbridge wines, which are $9 for 1.5L (twice the size of a standard bottle) at Total Wine. They'd be better off just asking Total Wine to recommend budget wines to them for their menu. read more

Heads up: you can only get in if you're a card member or staying at the resort. We didn't know this but got lucky and they had opened it to the public today due to a golf tournament. The restaurant is located on the river within the resort grounds (also the address on yelp is wrong, it should be 1060 Kingsmill road). The view is gorgeous, definitely get a table outside on the deck so you can see the river and marina. We called ahead to make a reservation but apparently they don't do reservations here. The food was great. Awesome fresh seafood, and the cocktails were great too. Highly recommend the sangria or the pina colada. The service was also excellent. read more

Initial greeting was not very inviting. Wasn't very busy at 7pm but had an hour wait without a reservation with many tables available during our entire wait. No other seating was offered outside of waiting area. We ordered 2 appetizers and 5 drinks that we ate from a bench in the waiting area outside. Waiter was friendly and followed up. I was just at Kings Mill Resort this past week and myself and my wife went to get some dinner at the James Landing Grille saturday night. The place was not crowed at all and we were turned away just because we booked our room from a third party vendor and not Kings Mill to save money. I do know that is somewhat the policy but come on this place would rather loss roughly a $200 dinner. They embarrsed us in front of everyone like we were outcasts. We paid good money to stay at Kings Mill Resort and were tossed aside by some young waitress. Also we did not have any issues in The Eagles Nest or Elements 1010 restaurant. What an amazing scenery by the James River. If you want a table for dinner, make a reservation. We sat at the bar, had a few drinks an appetizer and dinner. I guess I made some bad choices, because everything was fried, and I over did it. Started with bang shrimp, popcorn shrimp with a tastey sauce, although it seemed it was a lot of breading and not much shrimp. I had the rockfish tacos w/fries and they were tastey, maybe too much breading on the fish. My wife had the Caesar salad with a crab cave and it was average. Crab cake was decent. The wife had white sangria and she enjoyed the first one, her second was not too good. Not sure why, it was a huge pitcher of a mix. We got our bill, and we were shocked at how high. $7 for 1 bottle of Stella...? The wife and I are not accustom to resort style places and there prices. Chalk this up to a learning experience. Wish I had read the reviews before going. It's a great location for great seafood but alas only the view impresses... And that disappears over the evening right as the disappointing food is served. There were 11 of us celebrating parents 60th anniversary, which we mentioned in secret to the Hostess hoping for some sort of surprise dessert recognition but nothing! Faux pas aside, there was nothing above average, let alone great, about the food. Some of the dishes were barely edible and only what would be acceptable at half the cost. It upsets me when you go to a restaurant expecting to shell out for the location and ambiance and the kitchen doesn't come through with food that matches what is on the check. Tuna was bland and not seared. Vegetables of the day were tasteless and the portions looked more like a garnish than an actual side dish. It's a grill with Resturant prices. TIP: If you are staying at the resort and want to include James Landing Grill then go for a drink on the outdoor patio. There was live music which was good, a fire pit and Drinks aren't budget buster prices. Notwithstanding the two stars everyone in the family had a great time and enjoyed each other's company and celebrated a wonderful milestone in a great location. This is overpriced nonsense. If you're past middle age I guess you'll be comfortable going there. It took twenty minutes to get our first drink and they weren't particularly busy. The drinks may have not even had alcohol in them. The food underperforms by a mile and is overpriced by two miles. The place is teaming with retirees so if your idea of a good place to sit and eat is a place with a diverse crowd this is not it. Get out your walker. Had crab cakes, seemed an awful lot like grocery store stuff. Dining parter got a seafood roll, nothing but disappointment. This place is a joke. Don't bother. read more

Was hesitant to try it out due to some poor reviews on-line, but we took a chance and were pleasantly surprised! My husband said the shrimp were some of the best he has ever had. I had the mahi tacos and they were great! Our kids had hot dogs and the hamburger, which they also enjoyed. We sat outside and the view was fantastic! The staff were very friendly - we would definitely go back! Only drawback was that the menu was not huge. Probably offered 25 or so different dishes - would be nice if there was a bit more to chose from. read more

Terrible food! We used to go here all the time but haven't been in about 2 years. Tiny menu. Got the grilled mahi sandwich & it was so dry &overcooked. The salad dressings were also terrible. They used to have a tasty champagne vinaigrette- it's still called that but it's completely different. It's such a shame a place with such a great view has such horrific overpriced food. Wow! Disappointed again! Went here for my birthday and the waitress accidentally split beverages ALL OVER my father. Thankfully, the coffee was placed on the table before everything went over on him. From shoulder down, he was soaked. Luckily, my father is laidback and didn't make a fuss...had it been my mother or even my wife, completely different ballgame...I was mortified that the event even just happened, much less a spot we go to regularly as a member. I feel like I pay into a system that should offer pluses and perks that you wouldn't get at any other restaurant in the area....as a guest at Kingsmill, I would expect the same. Unfortunately, next to being situated right on the water, that is not true. In addition, the creamer for the coffee had lumps in it, which my mother did NOT see...thankfully I did. After we got cleaned up and fresh drinks, the crab dip appetizer came and it was actually decent. We only got fish tacos and sandwiches as a meal, and that was mediocre to decent as well. Although I didn't take the incident as well as my parents did, I do get that accidents happen but this was a waiting 101 no no...you don't bring a tray full of drinks to the table in between two seated guests and proceed to serve to table!!! Honestly, I saw this happening before it even happened! At the end of the day, I don't completely blame the waitress, although this was 100% completely her fault, but management...who did at least come to the table but overall had a "ho hum" attitude about it...we all know this type stuff happens but I don't need a manager to tell me that!!!! I mean DO WHAT?!? We didn't ask for compensation, but they took off the appetizer...they're just lucky this didn't hit my mothers white outfit so they got off REALLY LUCKY! By the way, I wouldn't expect a free meal by any means, but as a frequent customer and club MEMBER, part of me just expected more from a very unfortunate accident. My father was a good sport and even felt really bad for the waitress and even gave her hug on the way out. I, however, left with a bad taste in my mouth from how the whole thing was handled. This resort really needs to step it up, have properly trained wait staff, and better reaction/response from management...not that "this stuff happens"...it really shouldn't happen here honestly. :/ 2/29/20 update! Well, not much has changed...went in tonight and I'm pretty sure the staff was on drugs...too many crazy things to type up...some are actually hilarious...for now, let's just chalk this up to another terrible experience!!! Spent a rainy day tooling around different sites in the area. Came back to the resort and took some photos of the amazing cloud formations over the river from the marina. Decided to get a drink and snack at the bar. Margaritas, calamari, and oysters on the half-shell were terrific! Our waitress, bartender, and the manager all chatted with us and we enjoyed our time there. Will definitely try dinner on the next trip. read more

We were staying at Kingsmill and the front desk agent encouraged us to eat here, that it was the fine dining choice at the resort and that we definitely needed reservations. We called on a Saturday night at 5 and got a table for two at 8:00. Upon entering, it's a nicely decorated space and the hostess greeted and seated us quickly. The restaurant has an identity crisis of sorts- Our server was Sarah, she did a good job, though service was so fast that she kept bringing us dishes before we were finished with the previous course. We had Hess Cabernet Savingnon and it cost almost twice as much as market price. I ordered the Salmon with teriyaki glaze, it was presented nicely, though the shrimp was too cold, and the dish overall was fine. My companion had the Flounder with crab cake and parmesean on top, also said it was fine. For dessert we had apple crisp with whipped cream, ice cream would have been better but they didn't have any at the restaurant. Also we ordered Hennessy but they didn't have any cognac whatsoever. We had a group of 8 and they have plenty of seating. There is an elevator too so it is very handicapped accessible. The view is great as it is right at the marina and you can see the Chesapeake Bay. I ordered parmesan and crab crusted flounder, rice and asparagus. It was $30 which was probably a tad over priced, but right for the atmosphere. The fish was well flavored but the crust was not firm. The Parmesan was just flakes, not a crust. The asparagus was firm and yummy. Overall, everyone enjoyed their meal and the view was great. read more

It was horrible from the start, only thing they have going for them is the beautiful view of the James river! We made a reservation for 3 people at 530 assuming it wouldn't be too crowded then, especially as only resort guests and members are allowed. We showed up and got our table, originally there was no view but we asked to be moved as there was no one there and we made a reservation. They moved us to a much nicer table with pretty view, but our server wasn't showing up? Where was she? We had to ask for her and I will preface saying I feel very bad for her, she obviously was having a bad day and shouldn't of been working and her manager didn't help! Once she showed up, we asked questions about the menu which she had NO answers to and had to go ask her manager. We ordered a bottle of wine, and well that didn't show up! It definitely would've helped the wait if we had a little buzz. She finally came back after asking our questions except only had one question answered?! At this point we ordered because we were so hungry! However an hour later still no food or wine?! The brought us complimentary bread, BUT all of us are gluten free! So that didn't help, at this point we were furious and asked for the manager she promised the food would be out in 6 minutes or everything was free.. food still wasn't out, we told her we had to leave- she said no food is coming. We finally got the food and guess what? The fries were cold!!! Seriously? We waited this long for food and it wasn't hot. Very disappointing! We made sure to tip the waitress well despite having our meal comped because I felt she didn't have the help or support needed. I blame it all on the manager and her management skills. read more
