To be fair this was official night "two" of this new restaurant. 3-stars now, headed towards 4-star. Seating and seat management still an issue. I think that will come with time. Service was very slow for entree, they are not yet used to a dinner rush and the kitchen fell way behind. Food was excellent 4-star but presentation was 2 to 3 star. Just plated, not presented. There is a difference. Visual appeal is important. Dinner for two with two drinks was $80 with tip. This could become a great place with a little effort. View is fantastic and staff is working hard. They are trying to make it work. Parking will be an issue but OK now and they are at 50% capacity still. Top floor has the best views but 1st floor has music and outdoor seating + bar. read more

The fish tacos and the blackened shrimp tacos were also tasty. I did order lightly blackened because I like to taste the shrim. We spent Memorial Day Sunday on the outdoor deck and found the experience delightful! It was about 5 p.m., and even though it was a holiday weekend, happy hour was in effect, so we got a great deal on some half price appetizers and nice wines by the glass. The calamari wasn't quite as crispy as I would've liked, but still flavorful and the portion was enormous. I also had oysters on the half shell, which were small ,but tasty and briny- perfect for the deck. The best part was the live jazz and cool breeze coming off the James. I'll definitely be headed back for another evening there! read more

Service was subpar at best. Our server had no concept of time. She came to check on the table multiple times in rapid succession and then would disappear for 20 minutes. My daughter's burger was charred so badly that it was no fit to eat; she ate one bite. We would have sent it back immediately but the server was nowhere to be found. My food was so so, not great, but not horrible. Definitely not worth the money. The appetizers were good. When the server finally did come back to the table I informed her of the problem with the burger and she offered to make another one but by that time I had finished my meal and we were ready to go. We ordered two desserts to go. When the server came back she said that she had comped one of the desserts but not the uneaten burger. I didn't understand the rationale nor did I feel like speaking with a manager to correct it so I simply paid my bill and left. If you're going for the views then you will love it because it is in a beautiful setting. If you're going for the quality of food do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more

We are staying at Kingsmill, and my kids rwslly wanted to go to this place. Big mistake. Really nice spot for a seafood restaurant, but the food was barely pedestrian. I had the fish special, wahoo, which was so dry, it was barely edible. You would think that if they were going to offer something as a soecial, that it would be cooked to perfection. This was a Sunday night, and the place was not crowded, so that is not an excuse. Also had the oysters JLG appetizer, which also was not good. The fried calamari was very good, and the fish taos were also good. All in all, very disappointing. Definitely not worth the money. You will be much better off going Into Williamsburg. read more

Busy night but the food was delicious and all the servers and managers were great! You should make reservations. We didn't make reservations since we were staying at the resort and we didn't know it would be full on a weeknight! However, the restaurant fit us in and gave us a table overlooking the James River. It turned out to be a beautiful evening. Our kids were with us and the staff and servers were very kind to them and accommodating! It seemed that the restaurant may have over-full in terms of how many diners were there that night, but since they fit us in and gave us a beautiful table overlooking the river with no reservations, we were just so grateful to be there! It was very nice of them to fit us in. It was a great memory for the family and would probably be a very romantic date for a couple! read more

I love this place the scenery is amazing and every time I eat here especially in the summer it is beautiful and I always have a good time .

Awesome service, great seating area, and great view of the James River. The quality of the food was also very good. The only drawback was that the second we got our food, flies came out of nowhere and invaded the area. Aside from that fly issue, it is a perfect place to eat. The flies may not have been at every table though, can't speak for everyone who was there that night. Anyway, that should NOT deter you from trying this place out. The views are amazing, good customer service, and awesome food at a surprisingly decent price. Check out the menu online, and you'll realize it's really not that expensive at all for what it should be worth (in my opinion). Subpar mean with an on-par view. Overall, this restaurant isn't worth the money. We ordered the steamed shrimp and it was $18 for frozen shrimp that was heated up with seasoning sprinkled on top. We also ordered mahi fish tacos which had a bit too much sriracha on it so the spice overpowered the flavor of the fish. The sashimi bowl was actually just a big salad with some ahi tuna but wasn't really an actual sashimi bowl. It tasted alright, but overall this wasn't worth the money and it wasn't the best. read more

My boyfriend and I were staying at the Kingsmill this weekend and decided to dine at the James Landing Grille on our first night. We arrived around dark and were seated on the patio. The view was nice, but obviously would have been great at dusk or sunset. I ordered the two fish tacos for $10 with a side of fried corn on the cob. No complaints about the fish tacos, but anyone could have prepared them. There's was certainly nothing to set them apart from my own kitchen. I was intrigued by the fried corn, but probably wouldn't order it again. It mostly just tasted like dried out corn on the cob. My boyfriend had the Bayou Boil ($29) that included jumbo shrimp, oysters, mussles, smoked sausage, red potato, corn on the cob, and the choice of two sides (caesar salad and stone ground cheddar grits). Half way through his meal, he realized that there were no mussels on his plate. When the manager walked by, we got her attention, and she promised to bring a fresh plate of mussels right out. Our server then came to tell us that they were out of mussels and asked if he would like additional shrimp or oysters. While I appreciate the attempt to remedy the situation, it is poor restaurant management for neither the server nor the manager to know that the kitchen was out of mussels and for the chef to serve a meal with a missing component without alerting anyone. After one cocktail for my boyfriend and an oreo cheesecake to split and tax and tip, our bill for two came to $80. Keep in mind that my entree was only $10 so the bill would have been much higher had I ordered from the true entrees. For the price, you're obviously paying for the view. Everything else was mediocre and certainly not an $80 dining experience. Again, the food was certainly edible and tasted fine. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was not up to the Kingsmill standards that I had expected. read more

What a disappointment! The view at this restaurant is so beautiful that it is a shame that the food is so lackluster. We were hoping that our meal would be in the same style as the Bray, another KingsMill restaurant, but the only thing similar was the price. My husband had the waiter recommended seafood pasta, but it tasted like a bunch of frozen seafood had just been tossed with some undercooked pasta and a boring sauce. I had the rib eye. It was presented with a huge mound of fried onions that covered everything on the plate. The steak was flavorless and was served with equally flavorless mashed potatoes and vegetables. Neither one of us had more than a couple of bites. It just wasn't good. There were only two tables dining here when went to this restaurant (ours and one other). The service was along the lines of what you would expect to find at a TGIFridays. The only saving grace of this restaurant is the view. read more

Definitely SKIP the grill- the view is killer but the service and food were majorly lacking. Last Friday we had called and made a reservation for dinner at 815 and we requested to be seated on the deck. Really, the deck was the main reason we were eating there, as if overlooks the James River and seemed a fitting way to spend our last evening. We knew their menu was primarily seafood, and as vegetarians we figured we would make do to enjoy the ambiance. When we arrived, they ​ told us the patio was no longer an option for us and we would have to sit upstairs. Call me needy, but we can eat inside anywhere. The entire reason we were at this restaurant with high prices and food that didn't appeal to us was for the deck view. After going outside to take photos and noticing there were not one, not two but THREE empty tables we went in and revisited the topic with the waitress. She was incredibly unhelpful and made it really uncomfortable. Finally, another hostess, Hannah, stepped in an saved the day, squeezing the 5 of us at a small table (we were happy to squeeze). Our waiter Craig was great about the move and all around very upbeat. Sitting on the deck was a million times better and helped to distract us from our mediocre meals. I had the ​Local Vegetable and Farro Risotta. Total misnomer - nothing risotto about it as far as I could tell. The veggies were cooked okay but were ENTIRELY flavorless without a hint of seasoning or sauce. The farro was dry and flavorless too. It was the lamest $19 meal I've ever had. I was also very unimpressed with their strawberry shortcake dessert. OK pound cake and whipped cream, served in a goblet topped with about 3 strawberries (really!). Kingsmill, you can do better! I hope JLG picks it up to match the rest of the resort someday. read more

First time here and definitely won't be the last. It's very beautiful inside and being on the water doesn't hurt either. Denise, our waitress, waited on a group of 18 of us. Yes, you read that right, 18 by herself and I have to say she did an GREAT job!!! Drinks, apps and entrees were served in a timely manner and she always had a smile on her face. Didn't eat here, went at 4 pm, that's when they open, it was the two of us and another couple behind us, that was it. We didn't want to sit at a table for two as the rail blocked the view, we wanted to sit at a high top by the rail. We were told that was for groups of 4. Finally after much todo the said we could sit at the high top. Then went on to give a variety of explanation why we should not sit there. By this point all the joy of eating there was gone, the manager, Jerry, really did not care he just said we could sit there. It was just overall a poor experience. I felt they were condescending and arrogant. We left. It was a shame as we were staying in the marina. read more

We never ate here so I can't tell you what it was like other than the fake-a-nice 20 something yr old staff. Here is the story. My husband and kids were in our way to a soccer tournament in VA beach and ended up here because our Tesla needed charging and this property showed a PUBLIC charging station available. After debating with the gate guard they finally let us through since we were almost out of charge and the super nice staff member that was driving the golf cart escorted us to the charging station and subsequently to this restaurant. Apparently what he didn't know was that under no circumstances, which seems to include having a starving 7year old, are you able to dine at this establishment without being a member or guest. We pleaded for an exception after having been on the road for 5 hours in traffic and explained we were only there because we needed to wait for the car to charge, but to no avail. It seems money is not all green at Kingsmill and no one cares what your story is. Shame really because the grounds are beautiful and I was thinking this would have been a great place to consider for a family vacation but there isn't an ice cubes chance in hell I would ever come back. Ever. P.S, shame on Tesla for putting this place on their public access map. When we left we saw another poor Tesla soul searching for the same charger. Hope he wasn't hungry. read more

James Landing Grille - Just had lunch. Nice view but just less than OK for everything else. They were not crowded; in fact the upper level was completely empty. Very poor service! We had to wait about 10 minutes for a glass of ice water - even then one glass got about half filled and they never came back to fill it the rest of the way! It took over 30 minutes for our meals to arrive after we ordered. While we waited and waited for our meals the wait staff dropped one bottle of beer, a pepper mill, a dish, and dropped a glass that shattered into 100 pieces. The wait staff seemed not to know what they were doing - I imagine the cook didn't either. Our meals arrived and the food looked good. However, the chicken was overcooked, dry, and tough - the hamburger was overcooked and tasteless, and one meal was not correct. The french fries were very crispy to the point of being over fried. Plus you can get the same food at one of the other Kingsmill Resort restaurants for $2 to $3 less! Without being asked, management came over to the table while we waited for our food and interestingly did not ask about service - only talked about weather and how our day was going. We immediately realized that this was a big tip that they did not care or want to hear our comments about the restaurant, staff, or the food. Not worth going for a meal! read more

What a lovely setting for a restaurant. Other than the view which was fabulous, the food was ordinary. The salads were tasty, the drinks were well made. The taco was good, but our broiled fish was too salty and overcooked. The real problem was at the beginning of the experience. I called from my room and a gentleman "took my name" and informed me of the 45 minute wait. We spent the 45 minutes in our room, no problem. When we arrived at the site, a young woman informed me that there were no reservations and it was first come, first served. What???? Why did the man take my name, I could have come down and sat there rather than wait in my room. There needs to be better communication of the policy!!! There were empty tables all over the place. The staff seemed overwhelmed and frantic. The wait staff, although stretched too far, was gracious and helpful. Too bad, because the setting is beautiful. read more

My husband and I were there a few weeks ago for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We had 7:30 pm reservations and when we got there we were told they were having a bad time with knats out on the deck but we wanted to be seated indoors anyhow. We waited about 20 minutes and were finally seated upstairs. We waited several more minutes before our waiter finally ambled over. He asked us for a drink order and asked if we were ready to order. We placed our order and then a few minutes later he took the order at the next table (a group of golfers) and went into great detail re: the menu as well as the specials which we were never told about. We waited another 20 minutes and finally asked a bus boy for some bread. Our waiter finally came out with our order at which time I asked if we could get some bread at which point our waiter looked at me like I had asked him if he would give me his first born. Our food was mediocre at best - I can't even remember what I ate it was boring and my husband told me his food was just plain BAD. Bad service + average food = we won't be going back. I suggest trying Le Yaca (just a short drive away). read more
