Although many of the reviews praise James, I had Tim cut my hair during my first visit and he did a really good job. He spoke English, was incredibly friendly, and greeted me as I walked in the door. I think what really stood out was he communicated to me throughout my hair cut asking if my hair looked okay or if I wanted to cut it shorter. I've been coming to James Salon for years. I prefer simple cuts, I don't curl my hair or anything in the mornings so I prefer styles that are easy to manage even without primping. Mr. James is an expert stylist and always cuts my hair exactly the way I want. I have fine hair and he always manages to give my head more volume than it would otherwise have. I usually don't write reviews for anything other than restaurants. But this one is for the guys looking for a decent hair cut place. I got a fohawk, which I supposed was pretty standard. At first when I walked in, I was already slightly turned off by the seedy looking surrounding area and the inside being dimly lit compared to the outside. But after that, I was greeted pretty warmly by the owner, who then proceeded to cut my hair old style with scissors. But then he noticed I had a bad hair day, so he suggested a shampoo bath (which was free). I was pretty surprised that he didn't charge me anything for the shampoo, because normally I would think that's something you'd get as a girl, and those haircuts cost way more than a man's haircut. My husband has been coming here for almost 10 years since James Salon opened and the hairstylists mostly do a good job. He's not picky with his hairstylist or haircut. Just be careful with Chi Tien. She's personable but did not follow my instructions when I requested a trim for my 18 month old. A trim became a buzz cut. My son's hair was already thin and all the months of having his hair grow out to be cut so drastically was traumatic for me! It's been almost a month and I'm still pretty bummed about the screw up when I get a glimpse of his hair. I'd give a lower rating but am sticking to 4 stars for all the years of good service but it'll be hard to forget this huge error. read more

I love this salon. Anh Xuong and Chi Van are always accommodating to service their customers. I am a busy mom; they always sêem to fit me in their schedule even without an appointment. They take personal interest in their customers and give friendly service to each and every customer. The atmosphere is very welcoming, casual and relax when you come here not like some hype want-to-be salons in Little Saigon just so that they purposely charge customers more money for their so-call not-original works. It was my first time getting my hair dyed professionally and I wanted to go to a place that had good reviews. My girlfriend referred me to this place and I went in with her. Thien is the one that cut and dyed my hair and she did a beautiful job!! She took her time and after the first dye, she was concerned that I wouldn't like the length of the ombre and offered to redo it. It came out perfect! Black on top with burgundy ombre. James is awesome! I was late to my appointment and he was so gracious to wait for me, and he ended up cutting my hair in 15 minutes. He did a superb job. I had over a foot of damage to my hair, and he made it into a healthy, stylish and edgy lob. He's very knowledgeable and kind. It is a cash only place, but there was an ATM next door. I completely adore this salon! I just walked in and was able to get service immediately. The lady who cut my hair was Thien, and she was so friendly! I love my new haircut and look forward to coming back for another haircut. The price was amazing. I got my hair cut for $17, and I gave her a $5 tip because she was so nice! The way she cut my hair was truly fantastic. She did what I believe was a tornado cut, which was where in certain parts of my hair, she twirled it amazingly fast and cut it. In addition, Thien cut it dry, which ends up looking a lot nicer than when you cut it wet because it gives you a more accurate look of how it'll actually look. Cutting hair dry takes extreme skill and Thien made it look so easy! (: I love this place, and my sister plans to get her next haircut here too! read more

I wear my hair really short but unfortunately, I have the typical coarse, thick, straight, difficult to manage asian hair (like straws). I have gone to expensive, cheap, high end, low end, white, black, asian, hispanic even barber shops to try and get my hair managed it but so far, James has been the only one who can get it as close as I think I could ever hope. James is tedious with his work and most importantly, he listens. I also love that he's consistent. Each visit gets me the same cut if I picked the same style or if I just asked for a trim. Also, it works best when you bring in a picture to show. I will be honest and say that the haircut is about 90-95% perfect but I consider that a great outcome consider I usually show him a picture of a model with a hairstyle that probably costs hundreds of dollars to create then expect James, who charges me $15, to mimic that style. Anyhow, I've been a customer of James for about a year now and so far, I'm very happy with the service so, I thought I share my experience. Good luck! ps. I have been with James for 8+ years and I dont think he ever tried getting to know me. I dont even think he knows my name... regardless I was still a loyal customer because of his great work and good price. However, more recently, he has been cutting hair unevenly (happened twice to be exact). There was also an incident where he took another customer (she was a walk in) before me even though I already made an appointment. I only came to him for haircuts. I bought a Groupan service from him, he give me an appointment after three weeks and then he cancel my appoitment 1 hr before my appointment time, no apology for that, and he text me that Groupan is bad for his business! This is the first time I had my hair dyed and I can safely say that they did a horrible job. I just wanted my hair lightened a little but somehow my hair color came out looking like a reverse hombre -____- it's super light on top but black (not dyed at all) on the bottom. What?!! I just asked for my hair to be slightly lightened and one single color. Keep in mind, the hair coloring cost me $45 so it wasn't cheap. I thought maybe if I washed it a few times it'd get better, but nope. So I went back after a week to ask if there's anything they can do to fix it and they just told me that the new hair on top takes in color a lot more than the bottom so there's nothing they can do. And that my only option is to bleach it 0.o My roommate got her entire hair to be the same color as the top of my head when she went to Allure Beauty Salon so I really don't think its impossible. I already made my appointment for Allure for tomorrow morning, so hopefully they can help me fix this mess! read more

So the other Sunday i decided to stop by james salon with my best friend to get my hair dyed and i showed him a picture of someone who had the color i wanted an james the owner rudely told me that he wont look at the picture to chose a color from the book. i told him ok than id like a golden brown an he showed me a color that was a little darker than what i wanted so i explained jus a little lighter than that would be fine. he mixed the color an said to wait 25 min after the 25 min he washed my hair an as i sat looking at myself in the mirror i thought wow the top of my hair looks extremely light an asked him why it looked so light an he said oh to wait till we blow dry it an even after he blow dryied my hair the bottom an the top of my hair was completely different the top was sooo bright it looked blonde up top an dark brown on the bottom it looked like reverse ombre!!!!! an he knew he screwed up my hair so he kept trying to reassure me that it looked good on me an blah blah blah so right before i left i decided to say somethin an asked him if he would fix it if the top didnt look any better within a few days an he said yes in a rude way turned around an rolled his eyes little did he know i saw him because he was right in front of the mirror when he truned around as he was rolling his eyes anyways two days later i jus couldnt take it anymore an wanted to get my hair fixed before my mini vaca an so on tuesday i came back with my best friend again only to find james trying to tell us he couldnt do anything right now that i should come back some other day i told him no i couldnt an needed it fixed today so he finally said yes and as he was fixing it he was talking shit in viet to his co workers little did he know my best friend speaks viet also! an the whole time as he was doing my hair he was insulting me telling me my hair is this an that an blah blah blah... anyways in the end he didnt even fix my hair right its still too light up top espcially at the roots and i never had this problem dying my hair!! i suggest never coming here... read more

I went to James Salon because of all of the great reviews. I made an appointment for myself and my daughter to get hair cuts. My daughter sat with a younger male stylist, and I sat with James. I'm not sure why, but neither stylist asked if we wanted our hair washed, and my hair was really very dirty. This is my biggest complaint. I assumed he would at least ask. I've been to other salons and sometimes they straighten the hair first, cut it dry, then shampoo and style, so I went with it. He cut my extremely dirty hair and then attempted to style it which wasn't going too well since the top was too oily to do anything but just stick to my head. The cut was just ok. I'm not picky. My hair is long and I just wanted the layers re-cut for some movement and shape. Some strands from the back of my head seemed to have gotten mixed up with some in front, so I have little chunks of really short hair in odd places. My daughter's hair is a similar style and her cut was just ok too. The few layers that my daughter's stylist cut were choppy, and slightly, but visibly uneven. I thought since the cuts were so cheap, it didn't include a wash, but after reading the other reviews, I see that it usually does. Also, after reading the reviews I see that everyone else seems to have received great service and a good haircut, especially from James. I felt rushed and unimportant and that doesn't feel good. The salon wasn't busy and we made appointments so I'm confused and disappointed. Maybe we don't look like the type of people that want, know the difference, or can afford a higher level of service, and that's why he kinda half-assed it with us. I really hope i'm wrong. For what it's worth James was a pleasant conversationalist and polite. I have written one other review in my life, and it was a good one. I don't like bad mouthing business and definitely don't like the petty, pompous people that seem to really enjoy the small power of being the critic. I always get a trim, layers, and side bangs, and James does a consistently great job of cutting my hair. I'd needed a haircut for at least six months now, and when I found myself with a Sunday to myself, I yelped for salons open on Sunday. James Salon was open and had pretty fantastic reviews, so I went for it. I called and set up an appointment for 1:30. The appointment making was unnecessary, but whatever. I was greeted when I arrived. A gentleman was eating near the back, which I noticed, but again, whatever. I love a lunch break. Once he finished eating, he sat me down, and we discussed what to do about my mop. I had beyond shoulder-length, thick, curly hair. After a vigorous hair washing (might I suggest cold water, it's refreshing, I'm so glad he gave me the option), he blow dried and straightened my hair. This took quite a while, I jad a lot of hair. He then cut my hair, consulting me about layer lengths throughout. We clearly had a language barrier, however it was easily overcome, and he dis an amazing job. I don't know his name, but he was an older gent, 60 or so. And the haircut was only $17!!! He spent over an hour on my mess. I love it, and I'll be back. read more

I'm very simple when it comes to getting my hair cut -- I opt for a minor trim off my length as well as layering to keep my thick, unruly hair somewhat manageable without a whole lot of products.
