He takes his time making sure that the scissor cut is even from all angles, especially when you have those troublesome cowlicks or whorls that other stylists don't know what to do about. Went by recommendation of a friend who came here two years ago and said James cut her hair just like the image she showed him. I went in on a lim. Not the most impressive area and it's definitely a smaller and more subdued salon, but James worked magic. I showed him a photo of shoulder length hair that framed the face with wispy layers. He only looked at the photo twice and I walked out with practically the same hair. He compared the qualities of her hair with mine and worked to get my frizzy, thin, boxy blunt haircut into something that frames the face and looks beautiful! I've never had a good haircut like this before. It was pretty professional with James. No small talk, I just watched him work his magic. I trusted him when he identified the problem with my hair (it being too boxy from a grown out blunt cut) and when he said he would layer it to bring it to my face. Super happy with it. I just went in for a simple cut. He forgot to put in a serum he said he would, but I forgot to remind him. Nothing was really added to my hair. My cousin, Lizzie (Ngoc) recommended James, as she had his services for years before moving somewhere else due to relocation. It was the day before Thanksgiving and the only ideal time I could get my haircut. Immediately around 9:30AM, I called and luckily caught them. Made a same-day appointment for 12:30PM and came in on time. James is punctual and gauges well how long it takes for a whole appointment. I got a shampoo and haircut for about 30+ minutes and surprisingly, I felt satisfied with the time, effort, and quality. I have seen James twice so far this year...and I must say...I recommend him. First I needed a cut, I was pregnant then, so I couldn't get color...so a cut was about due. I called and didn't have to make an appointment, so I was able to get James to do my cut. I really loved it! I love side bangs, so he did a great job. The second time, I was around the area eating Dim Sum and by then I had given birth to my lil 2 month old baby girl....I now needed another cut and color pronto! I called asked him if he was available and he said to come right in, that someone would apply color to my hair but he would do the cut. He does get very busy...so I got there and didn't have to wait, sat down I told him I wanted a new color...I have always done dark brown...he recommended medium brown...he did the mix and they applied it to my hair. After it was done, he came to me and did my cut...this time I got layers and my side bangs again. After he was done, I noticed the color difference and I loved it! I will stick to medium brown for a while. My gray hairs had disappeared! YAY! and my cut was awesome! I will go to him again in the near future! Took my brother and sister here for a haircut so they could look fresh for school. We just walked right in, James was super busy so we settled for anyone who was available basically. I was a bit hesitant because the hair dresser who cut my brothers hair only looked at the picture for two seconds. However, the cut looked exactly like the picture, and it only took her ten minutes and $8. As for my sister, she wanted a very short cut about ear length from her bob. The hair dresser who cut her hair washed first, straightened and then cut. At first my sisters hair looked the same but thinner until I asked her to cut it shorter because it was still at her chin. After ten minutes later it looked good. You could tell she was very hesitant about making it too short which I appreciate. My sisters hair was $15 not including tip 'cause she basically cut my sisters hair twice... Still a good deal though! read more

Decently priced and okay to go to if they aren't busy, but if they are they rush you. That's the bottom line. If James has two people after you, he doesn't bother to make sure everything is even, or even ask if you like it. He just flips you for the next person. I normally tip 100% here since it's only 8 dollars for a haircut, but it just isn't worth it anymore. I'll be going to other places in the future as getting a hair cut is a mixed bag. If it's slow, your hair turns out very well, if it's busy.. well, you'll be getting your hair fixed elsewhere. Too inconsistent to give a good rating to. read more

Problem is, my head is shaped like a Q-tip, so it's been VERY difficult finding people who can make my head shape look normal while still keeping my faux-hawk faded nicely on the sides. James did it. I've been going to this location for years even before it was James, going back to the time it was a 1-2 person shop owned by Al. Then came Peter, who was nice enough and still works for James part-time. James is a not very nice person. He can be rude and snarky. His cuts are terrible for men. The WORST thing about this place is the unsanitary conditions. They do not disinfect their cutting instruments, combs, etc. between patrons. They use and reuse the capes/covers after merely shaking them off a bit. I have often considered reporting James' shop for the unsanitary conditions but have just decided to find another local when I cannot get in to see Sam (see below). My opinion is that with James' shop, you'll get better, friendlier service if you're Vietnamese. (I'm not). I have a regular stylist/barber down in Newport Beach that I pay way too much money for, but he's been in the business for many, many years, having studied under Jay Sebring (stylist to the stars, murdered in the Manson/Tate killings). Jay was famous and Sam, my regular guy, is not only expensive, but hard to get appointments with as he works reduced hours. BUT he's the best I've ever had. James had a very nice stylist named Tammy that was pretty good, but she left a couple years ago. I will not go back here again. I'm ashamed to say that I went here so many times. read more

I went here after I was fed up with Rex salon on Bolsa and Magnolia and I live right near James Salon. That was about 2-3 years ago and i haven't left...I love their service there. Their hair washing mini-massages is extremely relaxing and wonderful. James cuts hair the best their, but the girls there aren't bad either. She tells me to get her long-length hair cut & colored is about $70-80, which is a total steal. Due to the positive reviews that this place has received from Yelpers, I took my mom here to get a haircut. She's had bad experiences at a lot of Asian salons, but at the same time, she didn't want to spend a lot of money. I didn't have James; instead I had one of the female staff members and she did a great job. My mom wanted a pixie, and I was afraid that she wasn't going to make it short enough. However, when she put her hand on the razor, I got excited. The back turned out really well ... personally I thought that the bangs were too long but my mom liked it so that's all that matters. She even said, "This is the first haircut that I have ever been satisfied with" and that made me really happy. :) She really enjoyed the hair wash too. So I been going here for years my stylist is Amy she always nice , quick and great with the clippers. She always ask how you like your hair and she just don't dive in cut however. The best part is the amazing shampoo and face cleansing, so relaxing. An ways I recommend her if you like men's haircut. I went to James Salon for a simple haircut (trim to layer, actually) yesterday morning. I got there with the help of Ms EalAlot's tip that the salon is located beside the sushi bar. It wasn't so hard to find anymore. What they did to my hair: The lady in there was about to shampoo my hair but then, I told her that I already shampooed before I went to the salon. Then, she blow-dried my hair and ironed it straight. I'm not sure why but perhaps it my hair easier for James to cut it proportionately. I like the way James cut my hair. He didn't use the kind of scissors with teeth just to hasten the whole process of layering my hair. He used the usual hairdresser scissors which gave my hair more body. James himself was cool. He tries to make conversations with his clients, either through Vietnamese, Mandarin, or Cantonese. He knows how to respect clients who'd rather keep quiet too. Overall, James Salon is ok. In regards to my haircut, I just have to wait a few more weeks to see the real effects of the haircut. read more
