"I hate the fact that I called and asked for the price prior to coming and He "James" , the barber/owner told me its $17 including wash and blowdry for women but in the end he told me its $20. Lie #1. When I got in his chair...he asked me if I want a hair cut or Trim. I clearly told him just a Trim and make it a V-shape but I like to keep the length. So clearly all that details should have indicated to him that it is a Trim rather than a haircut. Then he snipped, snipped and snipped. I kinda stopped him in the middle and told him that I dont want too much layers because that will make my hair look really thin and short. He goes...that won't make your hair short because I'm doing only on the sides. - Lie #2. So he did all the unnecessary snipping and ended up over doing it. Because of that, he charged me more than what he told me on the phone and I left the salon with almost half of my hair is gone plus too many fuckin layers..argggghhhh!! I even tipped him $5 too...dont know why I did that...force of habit or i felt like that's the right thing to do. But now, I'm just so unhappy and very upset. James is AMAZING!!!!!! Gone are the days where I'd pay $40+ to get a shitty haircut and then go home and cry about it. I will definitely start going to James from now on. The salon itself is clean and bright, its tucked away in a strip mall beside this Vietnamese restaurant in Westminster. Parking is easy and plenty. Word of caution for some: it is very Asian, it's in Little Saigon after all. The staff at the salon are very friendly and sociable. James himself will make conversations with you in English, Vietnamese, Chinese, or Cantonese. But if talking is not your thing, hey, that's okay too. I called and made an appointment with James, and I showed up 10 mins early, but James seated me right away. He did a dry cut with my hair. I asked for long layers with side bangs, and to get 2 inches off after styling. He suggested that I get 3 inches cut off instead because I have long hair and my hair is pretty damaged at the bottom. He also asked how I normally style my hair, and he cut it based on my natural part. He cut my hair using normal hair scissors, not those ones with the teeth on it, to cut my layers. And he did the twisty thing with my hair and thinned it out. I absolutely LOVE the result. He listened to everything I said and gave me exactly what I wanted. I've never in my life been this happy and satisfied with a haircut before. The cut was $17 for women, and $8 for men (I think) Like someone else said below, James really has a connection with hair. I don't understand the high ratings. This was hands-down one of the worst salon experiences I've ever had, and I've been quite experimental. Issues: 1. Only one person in the entire staff speaks any English. Communication is shot if you're not Vietnamese. 2. Questionable salon environment and staff behavior -- The salon was dusty and there were various unlabeled bottles cluttering the counters. Combs and tools are clearly not cleaned routinely. A hairstylist with no clients at the moment stood in the center of the store shamelessly picking her nose, then when a client came in grabbed at the client's hair without washing her hands first. 3. Assistant who washes hair was very rough and managed to make this experience that is usually soothing very uncomfortable. He also clearly did not know how to properly shampoo or blow dry (waved the blow dryer on high heat haphazardly around my head while using his other hand to roughly zigzag through my scalp, creating a huge knotted mess.) I am seriously doubtful that every floor staff here has state certification. The redeeming factor: James himself was cordial and clearly took pride in his professional art form. I went here based on a referral from my aunt and my cousins.. Ask for James. I'm not quite sure what his ethnicity is, if that even matters, but he really knows hair. He seems to be a master at layering hair and controlling thick hair too. I had a thick head of hair.. and about shoulder length all around.. which is a lot for a guy.. and I showed him a picture, told him I wanted it to be similar to the picture, but not as old looking - keep it young and fresh, i said. He glanced at it, and said, "ok" and went to work. He snipped through really really fast, and it definitely looked like he knew exactly what i wanted and exactly what he was doing, because he was done with the cut and i was thoroughly satisfied in under 15 minutes flat. Best part? men's cut: $8. women are about $12 i think. I felt so bad because I was used to paying much much more, ($25-$40 range not including tip), so I tipped the guy $5. :) he didn't wash my hair before or after fyi, and i don't really mind anyhow for $8, totally not complaining. and he's not so good with styling the hair, but after you wash it at home, everything looks a lot better and it's exactly as you wanted. The place doesn't look all decked out with the rave music bumpin and it misses the haircut competition trophies like "old PASSIONs"but it does have Big-J. I have been getting my fades in cut all over bolsa since the days of the only pho store around (Pho Cali and Pho 54) and I would have to commend James. Dude takes the time out to do your hair right. He never rushes through a cut and always ask you if everything is all right. The coolest thing has to be his style of cutting. He does not use the electric cutters to fade you up much, you will notice he uses scissors..kinda trippy. You have to go to the plaza behind fuzion cuisine on the corner of Magnolia and McFadden or enter through the entrance to the plaza on McFadden. It is by a coin laundry place. James was busy when I came in, so Kieu washed, blowdried, and straightened my hair. Then I sat there for 20 mins looking through a hair magazine while waiting for James to work on another client. I wanted to keep the length and James knew exactly what to do. It only took him 10 mins to actually cut my hair but it was such a great transformation. I've been going to James for the last 9 years. So, before he opened his own salon. I was introduced to him, by my fiance, who had been going to James to get his haircuts for over 11 years. We followed him through two other salons before he finally decided to open up his own shop. And we're so glad he did. I usually make an appointment, but sometimes I just do a walk in and see if he has time for me. He's usually pretty accommodating, but if it's very busy he'll have someone schedule an appointment for me later in the day if I'm available or else later in the week. For $17, the shampoo girl shampoos and conditions my hair along with giving me a scalp massage. She towel dries my hair and takes me to one of the hair-cutting stations. Then, James combs, cuts, blow dries, and styles my hair. He's efficient with his time: slow enough to get it right and quick enough to not seem like he's ever second guessing himself or faking trying to spend more time on you. For men, it's $8. My fiance gets the same shampoo, condition, and cut service. But, he also gets a second rinse to get rid of the excess hair clippings before a final blow dry. Yes, all that for $8! I often leave anywhere between 50% to 82% tip (yes, 82%) and still spend less than what I would for just a basic cut at most salons and not get the kind if service that James and his staff provides. read more

Every time I walk into a hair salon, I get really anxious and regret my decision immediately after they take a snip. James changed all of that. A couple of years ago, my aunt recommended that I go here. A little nervous, I thought, "Why not? It's not like I haven't suffered through horrible haircuts already." So I walked in there, told him exactly what I wanted and it was exactly what I got, if not better. My hair is really thin, but I have a lot of it, so it's a little tricky to cut. Throughout the entire ordeal, he kept asking if everything was how I wanted it to be. Hell yeah it was! Anyways, he's the only person I trust with my hair. My brothers absolutely love him as well. It's been 7 months since my last disaster of a haircut at a different salon but I felt I had appropriate time to heal and trust another with my hair. My sister recommended this place and by the price and turnout, I've never been more satisfied. The lady that shampooed my hair was very thorough. I've never had such a long relaxing head massage anywhere and I almost forgot I came here for a haircut. It was just what I needed after a long day of work. She asked if I was comfortable, if the water was too cold and if she was scrubbing too hard which was really considerate. Afterwards, she dried my hair and stuck the towel in my ear and cleaned the water inside there too, just like how momma used to dry me. :) I can tell James is a very popular man and rightly so. I loved my haircut and he spent a careful 20 minutes making it perfect. The last guy spent 1 hour butchering my hair and almost took out my right eye. Anyway, I wanted to keep my long hair but have it lighter for spring and he did that for me. He didn't thin it too much and the layers look good. It saved me an extra pump of shampoo everyday and 5 minutes of blow drying each morning. The $17 haircut was better than any of my previous $35+ cuts so I'll be back! read more

There are many salons in Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and Westminster, but James Salon is nothing new and is just another average salon. Men's haircuts are priced at $8 while women's haircuts are at $17. Service was fast and efficient, but with numerous visits the haircuts were inconsistent. If there are few people, you are likely to have a better haircut, but if most of the hair stylists are busy with other people, you will certaintly walked out with one horrible hairdo. For girls, it's a hit or miss. For guys, there are better salons that are priced at $6 and $7. read more

BEST HAIR WASH EVER!! My girlfriend and I came in and waited about 5 mins, relatively short. Amy was my stylist for that day. I was thinking it was going to be just like every other haircut I've been to before, but I was blown away with the service. First of all she went straight to work on my sides and then gave me a hair wash. The hair wash felt like a massage and she gave me q-tips at the end. I came here for the first time just a few days ago for a haircut. I have been on a budget this month (went overboard on the shopping!) so i decided to check this salon out. It costs $17.00 for women's haircut, without tip, which is much more affordable than the 50.00 i normally pay. They gave me an appointment same day. James cut my hair and he did a great job. He starts by cutting dry hair...which was freaking me out because I've never had my hair cut that way. After some dry cutting, he washed/shampooed the hair. Then, he dried the hair (without cutting) and again, cut the hair while dry. Overall, I thought he did a great job on my hair. He paid lots of attention to each detail to ensure a proper cut. I'm very pissy when it comes to my bangs. They're like a big pimple on your nose. Everyone will focus on it! And since it's my focal point, I'd want them a specific (perfect) length and a certain thickness/style. Let's just say my trim didn't come out how I wanted. Some viet ladies might pick up, but they're friendly and they know you want to make an appointment so no fear. James is definitely my go to for a haircut whenever I'm in town! I originally stumbled on him probably about 2-3 years ago when I moved down to Westminster to finish up my undergrad studies. I was in need of a haircut and had resorted to Yelp to find the the best bang for the buck. I remember being initially overwhelmed by the plethora of choices, but eventually settled on James since it's only $17 for women and $8 for men. I've been coming back ever since. I never have to tell James in detail how I want my hair cut as I usually go for the default: trim split ends, get layers, and side-swept bangs. He does a wonderful job and I've always been happy with how it turns out. Although I've moved for graduate school, I always try to wait to come back and get my hair cut by him. The other positive reviews are 100% accurate. James is wonderful, and the service at James Salon is fabulous. The staff is incredibly nice, and James will listen to exactly what you want. For $17, I had my long fine curly hair washed, blow dried and straightened prior to my hair cut, which took the bulk of the time I was there. My actual haircut was very quick, but don't let that scare you because it was perfect by the time it was finished. I walked out of the salon with flowing soft layers. James was able to keep the length of my hair while still cutting off all of my dead dry ends. He's not a stylist that is trying to rip you off or cheat you out of your money. So as an out-of-state student, I want to inform everyone that I am an EXTREMELY picky when it comes to a hair stylist. I've been over five different locations around LA ranging from being super cheap and really expensive for a haircut and I've been disappointed every single time. I fortunately had the wonderful chance to try this place out when my best friend who is from Huntington Beach recommended me this place. I can now say with 100% confidence that this is THE go to place. It's hella cheap for starters. If you pay with cash it's going to be 10 dollars max for a haircut, WITH TIP. If you pay with card, which was what I did, I paid 11 dollars which is still pretty cheap if you ask me. James is always super friendly every time you enter the store. The place is small but in a way, cozy which is why I am a huge fan of it. I've been here multiple times, despite the fact that I live in LA. Heck, I'm always willing to drive down to Westminster to get a haircut here because not only is it cheap and the service is great, they always get the haircut down for me. I've been satisfied every single time. There one time that I thought they messed up my hair but it actually turned out for the better because it grew the way I wanted, haha. I have Asian-Salon phobia. It was the week before my high school sophomore picture, so I decided to get a hair cut. Clutching a picture of celebrity with shoulder length hair and wispy layers, I went in with high hopes..and came out looking like Julia Roberts in Hook!!! I was MORTIFIED. So guess who was the Tinkerbell looking girl in her high school picture? James Salon is thus a lifesaver and a cure for my long-held phobia. At 17 bucks for a cut, he not only managed to maintain the length I wanted, but he layered my hair in a way that is both fashionable and manageable. His cutting away seems a bit harried, especially on dry hair, but the end result is awesome. He had trimmed away 2 inches of hair and had given it style. And he's so quick at it too. He is fast, gentle and really takes the time to provide the exact hair cut and style the customer wants! He also does a great job on highlights! I appreciate the quick and organized service.
