Ive only been here once, and that one visit was enough for me to decide to never shop at home depot or lowes again. Unless I absolutely have to. The store is smaller yea, and there might not be as large of a selection of some items. Even completely lacking certain things. And I haven't done a price comparison. But what sets this store at a level that the big name stores will never reach, is the expertise, experience and general pleasantness of the staff. Where home depot is full of HS drop outs who don't know a C Clamp from Sea Horse, the staff here can answer your questions without hesitation, without going, ummm I've actually never used a screw driver before so I can't say for certain, and without that impatient and sarcastic tone that really pisses me off whenever I go to home depot. I own a rental property that is very old. I needed a new solid back door with a window, pre.-hung. I walked in and after waiting few minutes at the counter one of the two men behind the counter finally noticed me. There were No other customers in the showroom. I explained my needs and he said it would have to be "special ordered." I was shopping and asked the cost. He said it would be about $$$ but didn't offer to call or take the details and call me back. A bigger, better than usual Ace hardware store. It's easier to get help at other small hardware stores, but those don't always have what you need. James hardware is somewhere between a Home Depot and a small hardware store. I wouldn't go out of my way again to get here. read more

My mother and I went here to fix our family's crucifix. We got 4 screws and 2 washers. Tje price was 54 cents and our associate was Gary. If I could give all of the money to Gary to pay his paycheck I would. Not only did he help us find the right dimension of screw but he also fixed the crucifix on site. We have gotten interior doors, Security screen door (tru-view), hardware and baseboards from here. Even after moving from Anaheim Hills to South County, we make the trip to purchase things here as well as ask for their PROFESSIONAL advice. Not only do they go out of their way and take time to explain things, they are very polite and courteous over the phone as well. Greg... Wow beyond rude,while ordering my last window (an additional $300 spent at James Hardware ) I was informed by Greg that $25 did not even cover the gas for their truck to drive from Beach Boulevard to Harbor Blvd !! Nevertheless I had already spent thousands of dollars with them, on three sliding doors + 5 windows,also all new baseboards and every door and window molding in my home All purchased at James hardware this summer,yet I was informed by Greg that the mistake on the charge for $25 delivery fee did not even begin to cover the gas (for less then 3 miles) and I should be thankful it was such a small charge....I did not ask for this fee be waived but was voluntarily told there would be no charge for being such a good customer, Imagine my surprise when reconciling all my receipts to find a $25 fee... But I was OK with that, I was simply talking with Greg when he turned more rude reprimanding me... Did that upset me you bet... I do not need to be insulted by being reprimanded like a child on the telephone, I will add in the past I have found Greg abrupt bordering on rude, Greg is also the one who because of Miss cutting my molding boards cost me Another 20 feet... I didn't cry to him about that. My advice if your woman, don't see Greg besides obviously being in charge of the gas money for the company he finds us little ladies hard to take in his mans world ! Otherwise I have no complaints about the product or the other people who work at James hardware they're very nice kind and helpful I will add mistakes do happen but I don't expect to be reprimanded for mistake someone else makes ..... a simple I'm sorry there's nothing I can do about it at this point: Is all that's necessary, I believe it's called being a professional. I don't write many reviews, but I felt compelled to write this one, after reading some of the other reviews on here. I have been a customer at James Hardware for over 20 years, and they have always been wonderful to me (and I am in fact, "a woman" who has always gone in myself) ! Yes, they do get swamped with customers, and you may have to wait a little at times, (mostly in the door and window area), because many other people also think they're wonderful! They are a hidden gem throughout the county for homeowners, and also used by many contractors. They are a family run business, have an "old school" attitude towards customer service, and they do care about their customers...genuinely. They are also honest, and have saved me lots of money over the years! I will tell you about the most recent example of that: Back in 2000, I ordered all the windows in my house from them ( I had gotten many quotes, and they were several thousand dollars cheaper, for the same windows). The window company ordered from, has since gone out of business. Two weeks ago, I went in to James Hardware for glass replacement, on a couple of the windows, fully expecting to pay for them. They looked up my invoice from 2000 (which is incredible in itself, that they still had it, and found it quickly.) When I asked "how much", they told me there would be "no charge" to me. They said they would order the glass replacements, under the warranty, from the new company who took over. I brought the old window to them, and they charged me only $40.00 to clean, silicone, and reinstall the new window glass (compared w/ the $125.00 quote I had from another glass company.) Not only are they honest (they could have charged me and didn't), they stand behind the products they sell! Thanks James Hardware for years of great service!! Ps. To the negative comment people...sometimes you have wait for good things (look at the lines at some places for popular cupcakes or donuts.) It is well worth the wait for the savings in money, and purchase reassurance! Try to look at wait times, as God giving you opportunities to learn patience! read more

My husband and I went to the showroom shopping for the patio door. We got to this store since it was listed as a certified distributor by manufacturer. After we explained what product we were looking for, we've been told that they don't want to request a quote because we know so much what we want. We never got this rood service before. Great place to shop! I do most of my business up in the Window Shop. Everyone is always very friendly. I also send many clients to see them as well. They seem to know the products quite well and always find what we're looking for. Granted they don't carry a lot in stock that I need but if you give yourself some time and know going in you're about two weeks out, you'll be fine! read more

I've gone back to James Hardware because my contractor loves this place. He recommended that I ask for certain salesmen and that I mention his name. I did receive timely informed advice that helped me to make a decision about my purchases. I went back a third time to purchase a new entry lock for the front door I bought there. I had mixed feelings as to the service. Some sales associates are very courteous and want to ensure that you are happy with your purchase and others aren't so much. When the service is good, it falls in the excellent range. I would definitely choose James over Lowe's or Home Depot if I needed information about a product I was purchasing as long as I could pick who helped me. read more

I took in a small screen to be repaired after an intruder broke in through the window of my mother's home. I mentioned how it got ripped as I left it with the man. He told me it would be done the next day, or the day after that at the latest, which was fine. I went on to my next errand, and within a half an hour of dropping it off, I got a call that they had gone ahead and fixed it right away and if I was able to make it before they closed, I could come get it. Now that is service above and beyond the call of duty. I was really stressed out about dealing with the break in and James Hardware made my day just a little brighter. I have used them once before and found them to be fantastic with a screen door rescreen. They will have my business for life after this. read more

I would have never thought of going there based on the store's outside appearance, but a contractor I worked with some time ago recommended them for custom order doors. I was about to order a new custom front double door with sidelights through Ganahl, but just before I pulled the trigger there, I was driving by James Hardware and thought I'd give them a try. I met with Greg and tried to describe what I wanted, since it wasn't a common type of custom door. He worked with me through the entire order process explaining every possible detail - and I asked a lot of questions. For some of my obscure questions, he had to get back to me, which he did over the following days. Since my situation was perhaps a bit out of the norm, Greg offered to come by my house within the next few days to confirm a few details -about 5 miles away. He also offered some really good suggestions on how I could integrate the installation into the house design. This was in stark contrast to the Ganahl guy who struggled to answer even my basic questions - and he would never call me back. The cost of the door was about 25% less than Ganahl, and I believe I still got more than what the price from Ganahl included. The delivery took longer than planned due to an error with the vendor who built the door setup. I took advantage of the delay to do a few other things prior to installation, but Greg offered to keep the door safe in their warehouse until I was ready, but I at least stopped by to see it - I was extremely pleased - it was nicer than I expected. Unfortunately, I gave them last minute notice of when I needed it, but they brought it the next day. All in all, I was pleased with the experience, and I will surely keep them in mind for my next custom orders. I've since found interest in the hardware part of the store. While it's obviously not a Home Depot or a Lowe's, they have a lot of unique items suited for the home in the neighborhood, such as obscure circuit breakers and many other unusual items I've been unable to find elsewhere. read more

This place is fabulous! I needed 2 keys cut for my Suzuki and they were able to find the right blank and get it done! When I went to Home Depot earlier, their "fancy" computerized system couldn't find a match, so they basically told me I was out of luck. Having worked at a local hardware store back in high school, I know that there are often "substitutions" and tricks you can do (like find a longer key with the same grooves and cut the end off), but I guess if the computer can't do something, it can't be done at some places! Anyway, the staff at James Hardware greeted me as soon as I came into the store, foound the right blank within minutes, and even waited while I went out to the parking lot to make sure it worked BEFORE I had to pay for anything. If you are looking for great customer service, James Hardware is the place to go! read more

Home owners beware! The Paramount, wood-framed windows that I spent nearly $6,000 on did NOT pass inspection in Whittier because James Hardware sold me windows that could not meet the city's code for energy specifications. And James Hardware took NO responsibility for this...at all. They simply told me to appeal to the head of the city inspectors and hope for the best. What it comes down to is this: you better know every detail of every code in your city because these guys will NOT make sure that what they order meets those guidelines. And if the product fails inspection, they will blame you for not having told them, blame the inspectors or the state code. As a home owner, trying to do the best I can on a limited budget and with limited knowledge, I had to learn the hard way that you can't expect James Hardware to double check that you are getting what you need before you pay your money. Now I am in the position of either replacing the windows (and paying for the installation of those windows) or finishing a job that will not be certified as having passed inspection by the city, which could affect both my insurance rates and any potential for resale in the future. read more

I'm glad there are some reviewers who have had good experiences and have been going here for years but unfortunately this was not the case for us and this was not the first time. We were definitely not taken seriously by the salesman who was helping us, a tall burly man with a beard. We asked how much a certain Emtek door lock set was and he answered with "how much do you want to spend?" When my husband responded with a couple hundred he laughed and said this lock is $700. First of all, why couldn't he just say, it's $700? To be frank, I have handbags that cost twice as much as that and my husband is only going to say what he truly wants to pay... Not what we will actually end up paying. Anyway, I personally didn't feel like we were respected. It felt like he was offended that we were even in there to be quite honest and you can interpret that however you want. My husband did not want me to write this review because he likes James Hardware. We have had good service buying our doors and windows here. It's just the hardware store that I've seen customer service is not so good. So, good for you if you've gotten good customer service here. I can only speak of my own experiences. And by the way... We went down the street to Ganahl Lumber and bought the same exact Emtek door lock for a little over $300 which included tax! read more

This place is great. I lived in a house built in the 1960's and I needed to replace the front door lock. Strangely, I tried 3 different locks from Lowe's but none of them fit because my door knob was apparently not a standard size. i got one from James Hardware and it fit perfectly. The staff is very helpful. I would just bring an old shower faucet I needed to replace and they would find a match for me. the hardware store is not enormous but has a surprisingly good selection of basics. it's a real hardware store, not a place you're going to do a dream makeover but a place to get stuff fixed when it breaks. read more

I am a fan of Home Depot and have shopped there for the last 20 years. I recently visited HD to find a replacement for my Weslock front door handle sets. The clerk referred me to James Hardware. Not to get too nostalgic, but James Hardware reminded me of my childhood ... taking trips to actual legit hardware stores with my dad. HD is great, but doesn't hold a candle to the knowledgable staff at James Hardware. David specifically helped me with some tough door hardware issues in addition to special ordering the Weslock handle sets in the exact finish and style I wanted. He took his time with me and really helped solve the root problems. They had unique threshold accessories, door shoes and gaskets that HD would never, ever stock. Ganahl Lumber can't keep up with what James Hardware has available, either! Needless to say, I'm a fan and plan to return to James Hardware next time I need a legit old-school hardware store with people that know what they're doing!!!!! Side note, I drove from Corona. This store cares more about helping the people on the telephone before helping a person at the counter. I was I the store about 15 minutes trying to purchase a dryer vent. I was told that I would have to order the vent. I had no problem with the special order, but the salesman seem to think that the customer on the telephone was more important to help before myself. I will never go shopping at this store again. They have lost a loyal customer. read more
