I decided to buy dessert for my most recent party - and I've been secretly panning an anti-cupcake crusade because I'm getting pretty sick of the cupcake fad. What's wrong with a real cake? So I knew I wanted a CAKE, not a bunch of cupcakes. But they didn't have an entire carrot cake. So I said I'd take a cheesecake instead. The girl working there said "Why don't you do half and half?" And I wanted to jump across the counter and kiss her - what a genius idea! My guests were also impressed with the half and half idea - but more impressed with the taste. Picked up an assortment of minis for the birthday girl. At $1 a pop, these tasty morsels are worth every penny! We got Bugsy (carrot cake, duh), black and whites (chocolate cake with white frosting), and fudge (chocolate cake, chocolate frosting). Am i still on the search for the perfect cupcake? YES I AM. My little brother decided to stop by after work to tried Sweet Things' cupcakes (how sweet!). He bought three mini cupcakes (chocolate, vanilla & carrot cake), red velvet cupcake & mini carrot cake. The mini cupcakes were just okay, i thought the frosting was too much. The red velvet cupcake was okay too, is it me or was the frosting alittle bit sour?! The cake was very moist but the frosting was too much. Do i have HIGH standards for cupcakes? Maybe i do, because i still haven't tried any in San Francisco that i actually would DIE forrrrr (maybe Blissful Bites cupcakes). However, i thought the mini carrot cake was really good. The cake was very moist and the frosting wasn't that sweet. Actually, i changed my mind, the carrot cake was not just GOOD, it was DELICIOUS! i rather eat that than their cupcakes! So I find myself sitting in the passenger side and arriving parked on front of a grocery store. Juliane makes a statement of how she found parking right in front of the bakery that has as quoted by *cough* "Bomb ass Red Velvet cupcake! Oh my fucken God. I've never had a Red Velvet like this before. Moist and delicious. The cream cheese frosting was just right. Not too over whelming with sweetness. I LOVED it! I wish I had 3." In my mind I'm thinking that we are going to a bakery, but yet here we are parked on front of a super market; are we going shopping!? Then she informs my dumb ass as I finally see on the door of the grocery store that the bakery is in fact inside the store. So as we walk in I can't help but think perhaps it is not the best to mix the smell of raw meat with that of sweet sensations. Yes, the bakery is joined with the meat department??? Weird? I think so, haha. My review is a bit skewed and will most likely be updated once I try it again. I bought one of these oh so delicious bomb ass red velvet cupcakes. First, I would like to admit that it was sitting in the car for a bit, but not that long. Second, Tracy also had a cupcake, but it was subjected to more car heat and refrigeration than mine. Third, SOMEBODY decided to eat MY cupcake and leave me theirs instead. Point of the story being... that I had eaten the cupcake that was tampered with the most. This leads me to think that possibly the cupcake would have tasted better than what I experienced. The cupcake was a tad dry and the frosting tasted a little off. The frosting was good, but something just was not right about it. Although it was quite light and airy, the frosting had a rich thick flavor that stood out. Also, for some reason they did not put any red velvets out on display. We had to ask the lady behind the counter for them and she took them out of some trays sitting on the back shelf. The mini cupcakes are here are absolutely perfect! Instead of getting a regular sized one, I always opt for the mini ones so that the BF and I can get a bite of each flavor. The one complaint I've always had is butter cream frosting being too sweet and the one here is perfect. The cake was moist and the chocolate frosting actually tasted like frosting. The shortbread cookie was crumbly and delicious. The carrot cake was delicious and had a hint of carrot taste but not too over powering where it feels like you're chewing on a carrot stick. The one vice I has was that the cream cheese frosting on the red velvet was way too sweet. Prices are a little pricey but sometimes at the end of a long work week, it's well deserved. read more

***NEWS FLASH***. The cupcake-o-phile has found her new favorite cupcake place! Who'd have thunk that such a delightful source of cupcakes could possibly be found within the Cal-Mart? :) I bought two full size cupcakes (the buttercup - vanilla cake w/ chocolate icing, and carrot cupcake) and 4 mini cupcakes (fudge, black n' white, white cake/white frosting). Verdict? The cake on each and every one of these was moist and flavorful, the frostings were fantastic - the perfect amount of sweetness. And from a value standpoint, they are priced just right - between $2-$2.50 for full size and $1 each for the mini cupcakes. And the Sweet Things staff are really friendly. I had accidentally ordered too many cupcakes, and they were quite accomodating when I had to change the order. The cupcakes are WONDERFUL! My friend declared "These are some of the best cupcakes I've ever had!" I can't wait to come back!!! read more

After 3 times politely saying excuse me the employee (one of two)finally picked her face out of her phone looked at me without saying a word. I haven't been here yet but I did receive a red velvet cupcake from here from the sweet Juliane N. The cupcake was actually Steven T's but I accidentally ate it because I thought the cupcake was mine and his was in the fridge. SORRY! lol The cupcake was really good but the cake itself was a little dry. Maybe because it was left in the car for a while in the hot weather but it was still good. This little bakery is just swell. As in, thanks to this bakery being located near my workplace, my ass is swelling to epic proportions. They have a gluten free chocolate chip cookie that I convince myself is healthy because GLUTEN FREE MEANS ITS OKAY TO EAT IT EVERY DAY, RIGHT?!! I've passed by Sweet Things many times, glancing at their pastry cases. The cakes are usually misshapen and they're wrapped in plastic. They looked homemade in a charming, old-fashioned, imperfect way rather than made by a trained pastry chef. Their pastries are good in that same sense - not fancy but good in that down to earth, grandma made it kind of way. The nice thing about their cakes is that you can buy them buy the slice, half the cake, or the whole cake. They have a good variety of frosted cakes (and buche de noel for Christmas) as well as cheesecakes. They have a few cupcake varieties. I tried the mini cupcakes ($1.10 each) and they are tiny one bite sized moist morsels. I had the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. The vanilla frosting was particularly nice; it tasted like vanilla and soft buttercream. The cookies can be on the expensive side ($2 - $4 each). I had the gingerbread trees and they were good but could have used a stronger ginger/spice flavor. They also have muffins, boxed chocolates from Moonstruck,Charles Chocolates, Michel Cluziel and others, MarieBelle hot chocolate and baked treats for your dog. They cram quite a bit into their little space inside Cal-Mart. read more

3.5 stars I love coming here, it's so convenient and there is always parking. The staff is always nice. I only ever get the Red Velvet and it never fails me. The cake is moist and the Frosting is super cream cheesy. Love it. The best part is that the cupcakes here are much more reasonably priced than all the other cupcake shops, but that might be due to the fact that this shop sells other bakes goods, other than cupcakes. The bf enjoys the Bugsy cupcake(carrot cake) and says the cake is moist and the frosting is tasty. I had a major sweet tooth and ended up here on a Sunday evening due to Schuberts Bakery being closed at 5PM *sadface* I cant really say much for the cupcakes since i didnt buy one today, but i did purchase 2 slices of cake- i ate the chocolate cheesecake which was alright and i have another chocolate slice still in my refrigerator. It really wasnt anything too exciting. I was also craving for cookies and when i came to Sweet Things this evening I was speechless- their prices for cookies are ridiculous...$1.00 each for a small piece of cookie? must be kidding me. I can get an entire box at Schuberts for less than 10 bucks with more than 2 dozen AND the cookies are the same size and it's fresh...what a rip off. read more

Oh how I wanted to love this place. Everything looked wonderful. But the taste was missing, and that's a big no-no for a sweets lover like me. I tried their: Chocolate chip mini muffin Strawberry Cream mini muffin Chocolate chew cookie Chocolate chip cookie Burnt butter cream sandwich cookie The muffins were borderline moist reaching dry and crumbly The chocolate chip cookie and burnt butter cream cookie seemed stale and unflavorful. I read that the cupcake bubble is going to burst soon and I couldn't agree more. When it does, I have a feeling Sweet Things will still be standing, b/c it's actually a bakery counter within a market (Cal-Mart), so it prob. has lower fixed costs than stand-alone cupcakery. And they sell all sorts of tempting sweets. Also, their cupcakes are in the $2 range vs. the $3 range that seems to be the standard in boutique cupcakeries. Cupcakes! I tried a variety of cupcakes, the best being the chocolate (very moist), even though I am not a chocolate cupcake fan. The red velvet was also super moist (and I got a mini one, which are often dry). Loved the cream cheese frosting. Carrotcake cupcake was delish as well. The lemon mini cupake was just OK; cake tasted a little dry. And lastly, what I thought was Vanilla/Vanilla seemed more like butter cake with buttercream frosting. It was good, tasted rich and moist, but no vanilla flavor (maybe it wasn't supposed to have any). Cookies! "spa" oatmeal cookie is a crisp little delight for anyone on a diet. Oh dear lord. You'd think working outside of the fidi I would have a problem with places to go to satisfy an afternoon sweet tooth while at the 9 to 5. That isn't the case, as Sweet Things, is about 3 blocks away. Highly Recommend: any of their cupcakes, and yes, they have mini's which obvs don't count in the calorie department. All flavors, especially the Black and White cupcakes, melt in my mouth and are made with an obscene amount of butter. Which is obviously why they are so delicious. I also recommend their lemon bars (thick crust!), tuxedo cake, and anything of theirs that is flourless chocolate. It is a little expensive, but you can tell what you are paying for is made with the best stuff. And they meet my requirement of about 2 inches of frosting on cup cakes. Loves it. read more

Everyone is pleasant, informative and so helpful (especially during pandemic times). The generous cake tasting assortment helped us narrow down the perfect combination. Here's the thing. I am a cupcake whore. But even worse, I am a frosting pig. I want good frosting, and I want copious amounts of it. I want my cupcakes slathered in it. I want to rub good frosting all over my body. And yours. Anyway, Sweet Things delivers frosting...in spades! I only discovered Sweet Things a few weeks ago, and I am now a convert for life. Loves, loves, loves their cupcakes. There is a nice variety in flavor and size. The minis are cute, but I am a size queen when it comes cupcakes, so I always go big. Oh - the cupcakes are decorated SO PRETTY. I felt like the prettiest little 5 year old girl when I was oohing & aahing over their display case, and I have to say that I loved the feeling. Lots. I like being 5. And pretty. So, yes. Run. Do not walk. RUN TO SWEET THINGS. And as I've established in previous reviews, you can blow me as a thank you later. Or I can blow you. When I'm not cupcaking, I'm in search for the perfect cupcake. It's no real surprise that I would somehow stumble upon Sweet Things (thanks, fellow yelpers!). The cupcakes here are sooo good!!! And for $2.50 a pop, the prices are definitely reasonable in comparison to Citizen Cupcakes or Kara's Cupcakes. My favorites are the carrot cupcake, black & white, and the red velvet cake... OMG.. the frosting is so creamy, but light at the same time. My mouth is watering as I type. droooool... I originally came in to buy 2 cupcakes.. but the inner piggy in me decided that i must buy a dozen. BUT.... in my defense, there's a $15 minimum before you can charge it. read more

Someone here said the cakes were dry?! The cupcakes I got (Red Velvet, Black & White, Chocolate Fudge) were the moistest cakes I've ever tasted! Sure, they're LOADED with butter & sugar but who cares! Might as well eat the good stuff once you decide to eat a cupcake! Frosting was a bit overwhelming, though. Each cupcake had a thick layer and it made the cupcake really sweet. However, armed with my glass of milk, I forgot about it pretty quickly. I have to say, they didn't look as pretty as other cupcake stores such as Kara's or Teacake in Emeryville so they may not make the best gifts. They put my 3 cupcakes on a paper plate, covered them with saran wrap, and placed them in a nice box. The prices were reasonable. Each of my cupcakes were $2.25 and I saw mini ones for ~$1. I like different textures and flavors in my mouth so for the most part I can't eat just a piece of bread without the butter, and I can't eat a carrot without a dip, or a cracker without it's cheese.. get my drift? So in my mind, I knew I wasn't going to be blown away with a plain cheesecake without a crust, right? WRONG. It is to die for! Their cheesecake has to be the best plain cheesecake I've ever had. Yum friggin yum yum. They must have shifted spots in the supermarket b/c when I passed by tonight Sweet Things were begging me to eat them just inside the door. I was in desperate need for some comfort food, and the apple pie looked good. While I was there I decided I should get something chocolate too. Now, when I'm in the mood for some comfort, I don't normally ask for a "wedgie", but the chocolate/coffee wedgies here are D-lish. Best wedgie I've ever had. As for the pie: very thick slices of apple, light on the sweet filling, and encased in a crust that just won't quit. Okay, by that I mean the crust is thin yet durable, and not prone to sogginess. YUM! Top 5 of the cupcake bakeries I've been to. We had the red velvet with cream cheese frosting, vanilla with buttercream, carrot with cream cheese frosting, and the black & white. Every one of them had the perfect balance of frosting/cake, flavor/sweetness, texture/moisture. It really doesn't get much better than this. Everyone who is so in thrall to the cream puffs at Beard Papa needs to take the 1 California to Laurel Village and try one of Sweet Things black-and-white cupcakes. Cheaper than a cream puff and yummy. Cutting back on sweets? They have mini-cupcakes. Don't like cupcakes? What's wrong with you? Fine, they have two sizes of cakes. They have cookies, tortes, tarts, and some sort of dog biscuits, but it's all about the cupcakes. My Mom was planning to make some dessert out of a box for Christmas dinner. I told her I'd take care of it. While the cakes are a bit pricey for three people, three cupcakes are a bargain. The only downside was that my Dad told me he was only going to eat half of his, so I was counting on an extra half of cupcake goodness while I was trying to initialize his new iPod. When I returned to the kitchen, there weren't even crumbs. My Dad sheepishly admitted that the cupcake was so good, he decided to eat the whole thing. WOWOWOWOOWWOW. how did i live around here for so long and not know about this bakery? i used to go the doctor near here. i come here to get jamba juice. and yet i did not visit this haven of deliciousness until now. i ate a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting. orgasmically delicious. so i went back and ordered a full cake of the stuff for my bday cake. a bit pricey at $38 for the cake. the frosting made the cake look all homemade, which i kinda dig. and mmmmm it was so good. i want more. and there's little chocolate hearts that top the red velvet cupcakes. cute! i also had a black and white cupcake, which was ok, a brownie point, and a rocky road cookie. the non cupcake products were delicious as well. the carrot cake cupcake is also divine. this place gets 5 stars because i love the red velvet THAT much. read more

Wow, the carrot cake is awesome and the icing is so addicting, it's bound to give you a heart attack! That is all I was able to try on my first trip to this bakery but I will be back for more. Update: We came back here to pick up a sinfully delicious carrot cake for a bday and some other treats for ourselves. My friend Sarah took me here as a total surprise for a late birthday treat!! I was overcome with happiness, but sadly I had declared my new rule of having desert once a week, but she told me to splurge! WTF man?! Nehoo I tried the Carrot Cake, Red Velvet, and their Black & White (Chocolate cake with Vanilla frosting)...Took a sample bite from the red velvet, it was DIVINE!! Soooo moist and the frosting wasn't overly sweet. But OMG the Carrot Cake was AHHHHH!!!! SOOO good! I got sad that I finished it and wanted to eat my friend's cupcake lolz...But I'm good, she can have it. unless she doesn't, then I'm all over that! Nehoo I'm not a hardcore frosting fanatic, but this one had just enough frosting...That i looked every last bit of frosting that was on the wrapper and my fingers! This place is way better than Kara's Cupcakes..though we had some trouble finding it...Walking up and down the block until we called and realized it was INSIDE the Cal-Mart. After reading reviews from people on Yelp.com I decided to give this place a try, on the way there I was excited to try these so-called loved cupcakes. Wow, what are these people thinking? First Off, this isn't a bakery by itself, it's in a supermarket. And the supermarket is called Cal-mart so look for Cal-mart if your going there because you won't be able to find a Sweet Things bakery shop on the street. Nor was there any sign to direct you where Sweet Things were. Secondly, there cupcake isn't all that great. I had better down the street from the Starbuck pastries. Nothing special, cake has not wow factor. We tried 4 flavors, all four flavors are disappointment. Will I go back? Really! why would I do this to myself again. read more

We cut up the cupcakes, talked about and had a great time sampling: red velvet lemon buttercream vanilla buttercream vanilla cake w choc buttercream vanilla w choc chip cake carrot cake choc choc hostess vanilla w strawberry cream vanilla w coconut cream choco w green buttercream The general consensus was: +carrot cake best, choc chip cake good -vanilla cakes and buttercream unremarkable -red velvet disappointing (too dry and frosting too sweet) -frosting was inconsistent (some way too sweet, some too grainy, some just right) -cake was also inconsistent (some too dry, some just right) The overall best tasting winner: Carrot Cake. Good sized cupcakes were $2.50-$3.00. My final thoughts: Inconsistent and overwhelming. My cousin's final thought: I feel gross. read more
