It's comical that as an oyster lover, I am so far deep into the oyster happy hour rabbit hole that I am now discovering the entire oyster supply chain in the city. Jane Doe is a sister bar to John Doe located close to Bryant Park in the middle of all the action. As you walk up 44th St., the string lights that both Jane doe and John Doe share invite you in. I liked the floral entrance. Unlike John Doe, this establishment is a little bit more refined, and has a classier feel. The $1 oysters are a great draw, but there are so many other things to love about this establishment. Their happy hour is wonderfully priced, I mean, where else are you going to get $6 well drinks? The oysters came neatly shucked with very little shell, and a nice selection of sauces. It was an absolute joy to scarf these bad boys down with a crisp glass of Allagash white. I also tried the chicken tacos on their happy hour menu and they were very, very good and did not disappoint. They arrived hot with ample amount of guac and sour cream topping and were chock full of freshly grilled chicken. Seasonings were also on point. My waitress was super kind and on top of everything and checked on me multiple times to make sure I was having a good experience. The inside is nicely decorated with warm lighting and lots of florals to celebrate spring. This is one of the places that you go to for drinks without feeling like you're in a watering hole. Food and drinks came out better than expected. The cooking was noticeably thoughtful, nothing felt rushed or thrown together. It tasted like very well made home cooked food made with quality ingredients. The oysters were impressive. Exceptionally fresh with that sharp, clean brine you only get when turnover is high and handling is tight. Got an oyster plate to share, then doubled back to share a second oyster plate, because they were simply that good. During happy hour, each oyster costs $1, which was a good deal. Happy hour is 11am-7pm right now. Got the braised short rib which tasted amazing, I also tasted the shepherds pie a couple of times, and it was also really good. Both entrees were excellent. The drinks tasted really good too. Sat at a table in the back, and got a full view of the space. It was nice to just sit back, relax, talk and observe the full decorated space. I really wanted to like this bar because the space is genuinely cute, inside and out. The decor is well done and it has a nice overall look. It does get very crowded after work, so expect to stand! That said, the bar area had a strong odor that was hard to ignore, which took away from the experience. It smelled like literal vomit... We ordered a lychee martini and the lychee tasted off. It tasted sour when it should have been sweet, especially considering it's usually canned. That was disappointing! On a positive note, the bartender was attentive and friendly, which I appreciated. The oysters are always outstanding - fresh. perfectly shucked and beautifully presented. We shared a dozen. For the meal, we loved the French Onion soup! The bowls are filled with savory broth, a crouton and perfectly caramelized onions, covered with a slice of molten cheese lightly charred at the edges, and as if that's not enough, there's a fistful of fried onions to top this all off! Recently visited Jane Doe with a reservation--which is definitely necessary since the space is small and extremely busy. I ordered the Short Rib Mac and Cheese and the octopus. When the Mac and Cheese arrived, I initially thought the portion looked too small, but it was packed with short rib and surprisingly filling. I couldn't even finish it. The restaurant was decorated nicely for the holidays, which added a warm touch. However, the bar area had a noticeably sour smell, likely from the crowd, and the bathroom was unfortunately disgusting--the toilet was full of toilet paper and feces. Came for girls night looking for a spot to grab drinks and a chill meal. Jane Doe delivered! Located smack dab in the center of midtown a couple blocks up from Bryant Park, I was glad to find it nice and toasty inside on an evening where it was feeling -15 degrees F outside. Right inside is the bar, with about a dozen seats along it and scattered around the front next to the windows and left wall. Standing room available and there were a few TVs in the bar area and a few more in the back seating area. My friend made reservations for 6:30pm and it was pretty busy even with the weather so recommend making them if you're coming around peak dinner time. Staff were quick to acknowledge us at the table and brought menus, gave us time to check them out and then took drink and app orders expeditiously. They also checked in periodically on our meal. We got to drink: - Winter Dayz $16: my friend got this and didn't particularly like it. I wondered if the ratio of pomegranate, lemon juice and simple syrup were balanced with the raspberry vodka. - Pornstar Martini $10: Friday night is pornstar martini specials night! My friend enjoyed hers. - A Twist on a Spritz $16: this was ok though I have to say I didn't taste much elderflower for having both elderflower rose gin and St. Germaine. Eats: - Spinach and artichoke dip $19: I didn't try this though my friends enjoyed! Ample pieces of pita to scoop up the hearty dip. Topped with melted Gruyère like French onion soup. - Happy hour oysters $1 each: fresh, briny great with a dab of horseradish or vinegar with a squeeze of lemon. - Shortrib potato croquettes $21 for 3 balls: very good, crispy on the outside, pillowy mashed potatoes, tender juicy shortrib inside. - Reuben sandwich $19: served with fries or salad, my friend enjoyed this, good sized sandwich and tasty and fresh salad! - Jane Doe burger $20: I got this and was overall satisfied, the patty was a perfect medium rare like I requested. Fair-sized burger I was very full afterwards! Same fries or salad and I chose the latter. The only thing was there was a little gristle ground into the meat and I kept noticing bits as I was chewing (and kinda had to spit them out). - Salmon scampi $33: served with fluffy mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. Came here for happy hour with a few friends. The happy hour deal is great, and lasts a long time. We had some vodka sodas and tried some of the happy hour appetizers. They can really bit hit or miss. The pizza was AWFUL. It was basically like eating cardboard. The tacos were pretty good! The nachos were also really good. The place was packed, but the service was pretty good all things considered. They were very friendly and nice. The place itself is TERRIBLE for talking to your friends. We were sitting at a table and we could literally not hear a thing. I think there is some kind of sound tunnel where all the noise is funneled into the center of that room. The person next to me was screaming in my ear and I could barely hear them. It was a pleasure dealing with her. The cocktails were delicious and reasonably priced, and it's nice that they have a happy hour menu with a decent amount of options as well. Even their main menu has many options at affordable prices - a major plus in today's economy. The bartender (not sure of her name, but she was blondish with long hair) was friendly and accommodating. The bar is located at the front and there were a few people sitting around it at the time we walked in on a late Sunday night. The lounge looks very classy with its royal blue sofas and dark brown wooden tables and walls. We ordered a cranberry Apple Mule, a dozen raw oysters, shrimp tacos and short rib potato Croquettes. The cranberry Apple Mule was sparkling so refreshing but a bit on the bitter side for me. The oysters were big and came with a cocktail sauce and a vinegar sauce as well as a bag of oysters crackers which I prefer with clam chowder. The shrimp tacos were delicious. The tortilla was not bland or stale. The shrimp was fresh. And the guacamole, salsa, and everything on top made it a perfect bite! The short rib potato Croquettes were amazing! We were in the area for a show and a friend suggested Jane Doe Lounge. In retrospect, we should've made a reservation, as the bar was popping on a Tuesday around 5:30pm. We arrived at 5:30pm and was seated downstairs. The host insisted that we all order dinner if we were going to sit down there, which was the plan anyways. It took a long time before anyone came to take our orders. In fact, we were actually very concerned if we would make it out in time for our show. Food was fine. My friend had a veggie burger that she said was super dry. I had a short rib grilled cheese that was really more of a patty melt than a grilled cheese. I think there was a tiny slice of cheese in my grilled cheese. Service was basically non-existent the entire time we were there. They dropped off our meals and we immediately asked for the check when they did. Getting someone to actually come take our payment was another issue. We ordered a dozen oysters, Shrimp Tacos and Short Rib Croquettes. The oysters were a good size, not too small like some other places. You need to buy a drink in order for the oysters to be $1. The tacos were simple but still really good. Shrimp was seasoned well and the guac brought it together. The Short Rib Croquettes were phenomenal. The initial bite was filled with potato flavor which isn't bad, but once you hit the short rib in the center, it really comes together. The potato and Short Rib combo, with some special mayo and herbs on top, is hard to beat. One of the best Croquettes I've ever had. The burger was a very good one, a nice beefy patty, that was juicy, well seasoned and cooked perfectly medium as ordered. Served with lettuce, tomato, red onion and a special sauce, it hit the spot. The fries were also nice and crispy. The only improvement I would have liked was that the cheese be melted. The Short Rib Grilled cheese, wasn't a grilled cheese, but a short rib sandwich on ciabatta topped with cheese and pickles. It was quite good as well, also served with fries. My friend and I came in using a PULSD deal to enjoy drinks and dinner after a long workday and shopping. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing from start to finish. Our waiter, Dewan R., appeared to rush us from the beginning, which was confusing since the restaurant was nearly empty. When we asked him to pour our wine, his demeanor noticeably changed and felt dismissive--especially after we watched him willingly pour wine for the couple seated next to us. When we received our bill, things escalated further. After the PULSD deal, our total should have been $29.22. The deal was valued at $106, yet it was entered as $96, and an additional $35.92 gratuity was automatically added. When I calmly questioned the tip, I was told it was mandatory. I then showed him the PULSD app, which clearly states gratuity is optional. At that point, his behavior became openly hostile. He snatched the bill out of my hand, knocked over my water, and then returned and slammed the bill down on the table--all because I asked for clarification about a $35+ tip. We were also the only Black guests in the restaurant, and based on the difference in treatment compared to other tables, the entire interaction left us feeling judged and uncomfortable. The 2 bartenders seemed more interested in their phones and some other bar patrons that I had to wait quite a while to get any service.
