I was tired of holiday food so I decided to drive out to Katy Asiantown and ended up at Bon Kalbi. While sitting in the car reviewing the menu, I decided to just order and went into HMart for a few things while I waited for my order. I expected to wait a bit longer when I went inside the restaurant but they had my order ready earlier than the estimated time. The server was sweet and packed everything up tightly for my short ride home. I ordered the soy glazed chicken with a side of garlic noodles. It came with plenty of banchan and kimchi as well. After the first bite, I started to regret waiting so long to try this place. The chicken was juicy and the sauce the perfect balance of tangy and sweet. There was also a good amount of tteokbokki mixed in which soaked up the sauce well. The noodles were garlicky and had a springy bite, and the banchan were all tasty. The restaurant was pretty packed at the time, but it did not take too long for our orders to be taken and foods to come out. The restaurant was also a lot smaller than expected. The menu was pretty small as well. We thought it was pretty weird that they did not have galbi as an option despite having "Galbi" in their name, but that was okay. We were told by our server that they no longer serve BBQ galbi here. Like typical Korean restaurants, the meal came with complimentary side dishes, and they tasted pretty nice. I ordered the Korean Pork Ribs, the Seafood Pancake, and the Seafood Tofu Soup. The Korean Pork Ribs were not bad; they were supposed to be spicy, but they weren't spicy at all. The Seafood Pancake tasted okay though. I really liked the Seafood Tofu Soup. It was probably the best dish of the night. Overall, the whole dinner was not bad. I have had pork belly in other forms at other places so I decided to try it. The pork belly comes on some grille cabbage and onions and you get a side of white rice. Came around 7pm on a Saturday, and it wasn't too busy. The menu isn't super extensive with a few options in each category. We ordered the bulgogi hot pot, seafood tofu soup, and spicy fried chicken appetizer. The hot pot is definitely a sharing size, and we had a lot leftover between two people. The tofu soup was good and felt pretty standard across all Korean restaurants I've been to. I was really craving the traditional Korean BBQ, however there was no galbi to be seen. Instead, I ordered the Bulgogi and Seafood Tofu Soup. The Bulgogi was up to par! My biggest pet peeve with bulgogi lies with how little meat is served, and how much fat is. However, that wasn't the issue for Bon Galbi's rendition. Due to this reason alone, it allowed you to actually taste the flavors of the bulgogi rather than fight with the fat. Sadly, the Seafood Tofu Soup didn't have a variety of seafood. It did, however, have 4 very large prawn shrimps to compensate for this. The soup was made perfectly. You could actually taste the broth and flavor with every bite. I'm guilty of finishing/slurping the entire thing. NOTE: Banchan is not offered here, you'll have to pay a la carte. We found this place while checking out the Katy Asian Town while visiting Houston before moving here, so at least a year ago. It is located in the main plaza next to HMart so there's plenty of parking which is nice bonus. It's not a very big restaurant and they do get very crowded so get there before the crowd. The service was very good and attentive. We also like the cleanliness of this eatery. Galbi Jjim (Korean braised beef short ribs - 5 stars) is AMAZING. The portion is huge, it can easily feed 3-4 people. The Galbi Jjim consists of kabocha squash, potatoes, sweet potato noodles, and of course beef short ribs. If you are lucky enough to visit this place, we highly recommend this dish. It had a nice balance of sweet, savory and a hint of spiciness. The flavorful sauce is perfect over white rice for little extra something something. The meat was tender but not overly so chewing is still required. Although it may seem a bit on the pricier side but take into consideration that short ribs aren't cheap especially for quality meat such as this one. Cheese Fire Pork Rib (5 stars) is very delicious. The ribs were fall off the bones tender with a nice deep flavor. It's like BBQ ribs with a nice Korean umami twist. The cheese sauce was soooo good as well, it adds a nice smooth and creaminess texture to the ribs. Definitely a match made in food heaven. Woo Yook Tang (3 stars) was decent, we've had better at other establishments. There wasn't enough depth in the broth and a little on the salty side. Kimchi Dolsot (4 stars) is a very comforting dish with bacon, kimchi, and cheese...YUM! It came out nice and sizzling just the way we like it. The flavors were on point. The runny egg added a nice creaminess to this rice dish. We love the added cheese cos who doesn't love mozzarella cheese? Soy Glazed Chicken (3 stars) was just ok. It's teriyaki but not as good as the Japanese version. The chicken was tender and nicely cooked but it was a little too salty for us. The yummy chewy rice cakes definitely saved this dish. My brother and I came here a few days before Thanksgiving as we were craving some Korean BBQ. I didn't want to drive all the way into Houston and I knew this place had opened a few months prior. My brother had wanted to actually grill the meat but seeing as we were hungry and this place already had good reviews, we decided to try it out. And boy were we happy we did. The Banchan were good, first time I had seen lotus root offered anywhere, garlicky, and different. They only serve 4 different Banchan whereas most places serve 6 but I wasn't complaining. The service was very good and so was the food. My spicy Pork Belly wasn't too spicy and had a really great smokey and garlicy flavor. My brother had ordered the bulgogi and that had way more flavor than most places. We were extremely happy with our choices and have definitely decided that we will be coming back.
