    Jan's Village Pizza

Been to Jan's a couple of times. We really like their pizza. The crust is a good ... more thin than not ... which is what we like. Unfortunately the last two times we've been, our bill has been incorrect. I don't mean charged for something not ordered. And the employees at Jan's will say our bill was correct. Specifically, the price on the menu that they give you to order from is NOT the price you are charged. We were charged 10-15% more than the menu price (around $4 or so). We asked about this and where told, "the computer is correct". I then asked if they didn't want to reprint the menus. The waitress just shrugged. With inflation, I can understand not wanted the added cost of reprinting menus. But how about taking a pen and manually updating them? Or, posting a sign (they have several boards with messages already)? Or telling the customers? For good faith and customer service, it seems full transparency would be a good business practice. As mentioned we like the pizza and supporting small local businesses. My wife wants to return for those reasons.... Stating now that we know the price, we know the price. For my part, I'm iffy on a return. So, go if you want good pizza but be warned the menu is currently incorrect on pricing as of mid February 2023.

I'm deducting a star, and as always, that requires an explanation. My original review was written nearly three years ago, just a week after I moved to Westfield. There has apparently been a change of management. I don't know all the details, but unfortunately, the place has become a little dirtier, a little gloomier, and the pizza itself seems more like an old leather catcher's mitt. Don't get me wrong; a 'dive' place can easily be redeemed by superior craft pizza and/or some other food item that knocks it out of the park. Jan's never had pizza of that caliber, and with the recent reduction in overall quality, things are heading in the wrong direction. Examples: * As I write this review, one of the owners/employees is sitting at a nearby table, having grabbed some pizza (without a plate) from the lunch buffet. He's sitting there talking and eating with another customer. Employees should never eat right next to customers, especially wearing a ratty t-shirt and jeans. I have questions about this place's ability to pass a health inspection. * The pizza I'm eating right now was sitting under the heat lamps for quite some time, and no new pizzas have been brought out since I've been here (going on 40 minutes). Imagine a Tombstone pizza that's been sitting on the counter for an hour... I think this establishment should seriously consider changing direction, and moving into the boutique pizza genre. Invest in an 800 degree oven, hire some experienced chefs, and consider a new employee uniform policy. You'll pack this place if you move into thin crust, artisan pizza. Westfield and Carmel are into that sort of thing. Owners - if you're listening, I want to help. This building has charm, and I hope you'll make some changes. I want to be constructive, so please reach out if I can provide any real-world perspective on this. Thanks.

We had Jan's and the crust is waaaay better than the Greeks. Sauce at the Greeks is sweeter but crust is thinner and more gourmet tasting. We did all cheese for the taste test for Phish weekend in August 2021 but both were given thumbs up by the crew. If you want thinner go for Jan's. If you want sweeter, and thicker, go to the Greek.

A genuine local mom and pop restaurant. Awesome food, service and atmosphere. We had the pizza and meatball sub. It was fantastic.

It looked like she was the only server on shift for the whole time we were there, meaning she was running throughout not only her section inside, but going outside as well! Despite being so busy, she made sure to check in on us multiple times. Our garlic bread was cheesy and tasty, although we wished it was a little more garlicky! My salad was very refreshing and quite large for a small portion. My husband loved his turkey sub as well! My husband enjoyed his pizza flavor wise, but he prefers thicker crusts. However for me, the crust was PERFECT! I love a thinner, greasy crust. NY style, CA style, and similar are my favorite. These pizzas are great for that! The only problem we ran into was the toppings. The kitchen accidentally messed up on my pizza and put a different topping than what I ordered. When Grace quickly had them remade it, the second pizza had the correct topping.... But was now missing a topping that was originally on the first pizza! It honestly didn't matter at that point, because the pizza was absolutely delicious. The cheese was stretchy, greasy, and gooey. The sauce was pleasant , and again I love a thin crispy crust! The management was kind enough to take off my pizza from our bill as an apology for the topping fiasco, without any complaint from us urging it. I would definitely love to have their pizza again!

Also, ordered a large The Butcher pizza. Again, it was marvelous! Excellent taste and loaded with pepperoni and sausage. Cooked just right. Buttery crust too! Where King Dough failed was on the Circuses as Channel 7 food critic James Ward used to call it. There's Breads and Circuses. Breads is the quality of the food. Tastiness, balance, quality and quantity. Circuses is the presentation, service and restaurant ambiance. Server failed to bring utensils, napkins and condiments with the food. We had to go to the front desk to get them. No bid deal, minor complaint. The server also did not cut and serve the first slice to me and my date. Further, the slices were not cut through so we had difficulty transferring the slices off the serving platter onto our plates. Lucky we didn't end up with a slice in our laps. No spatula provided. Had to ask for pepper, grated cheese and hot pepper. We dined outside. Should have been indoors. South facing patio was full sun for most of the meal. And there was an old chicken bone under our table. I wasn't expecting a Michelin experience but come on! Clean up the patio. The server apologized up front for the pitcher of water having tea stains on it. Maybe buy some new pitchers and use them exclusively for water? Makes me wonder if this restaurant is circling the drain if they can't afford net water pitchers. At least King Dough does not tack on a 3% charge for paying with a credit card which has become an annoyingly common standard practice in many restaurants.

And waited... And waited... I only saw two other people come and go with pizzas. I was watching the guy near the oven and it didn't seem like he was busy. Finally about 10 to 15 minutes after my pizza should have been done, I decided to walk inside. Sure enough, there was one pizza box sitting on the rack all by itself. Someone walked over from the bar area to help me. The guy behind the pizza station didn't even make eye contact with me. I asked if the pizza on the rack was mine, and OF COURSE IT WAS! The only pizza in the building, and nobody bothered to check to see if it was a curbside valet order while a car was parked in the curbside valet area. My pizza had been sitting there getting cold. I told the lady I had been outside for over 20 minutes and she just said have a nice night. Nothing else. I went home after working 17 hour shift and ate my already-cold pizza. Our guests absolutely loved it, and the quality exceeded our expectations. Unfortunately, the service during pickup was disappointing. My mother-in-law picked up the order for us and told me there were several employees standing behind the counter talking while she loaded all five pizzas herself. No one offered to help carry the pizzas or even hold the door open for her as she made multiple trips outside in the pouring rain. I don't typically leave a tip on carryout orders, but because this was such a large order, I made a point to tip. It was disappointing to hear that despite that, no one offered such a simple act of assistance. While I wasn't expecting anyone to carry the pizzas to the car, holding the door open or asking if she needed a hand would have gone a long way. I wanted to bring this to your attention because the food was truly excellent, and I'd like to continue ordering from Pizza Uncommon in the future. I hope you'll share this feedback with your team so that future customers--especially those placing large carryout orders--receive the same level of care in service that they do in the quality of the food.
