Long time::: I've been stopping through for 20+ years when the enthusiasm and food draws me. They have changed a bit over the years, all steel table grills now with bar chairs around. Settings for 8-20 with high chairs and groups settled together but somewhat by pairs or groupings. An hour wait line starts almost at opening and allows time to settle in the rather large (50?) bar area for appetizers, sushi rolls and a wide variety of drinks while waiting. (Without waiting for the tables, it has been suggested the bar with sushi, etc is available first come first serve as group seatings and bar/app service cycle through. *The spectacle is well done by the chef, bouncing and spinning food parts and knife work with visual panache. Basic core meal is veggies grilled in shifts, salad and soup, and the different meals are your selection by meat/fish type. Each person gets their selection and are served up when each item is cooked on the sequence. This gives continual feed, not accumulating to pile up a whole plate to eat later. Upcharge for fried rice, but good flavor and inclusions and about double the amount of the white steamed rice. *Emperors Plate has most everything, beef, shrimp, lobster, and the full round of veggies with soup and salad. Quite a good quantity. And a scoop of orange sherbet to finish. *Most meals have enough for some take home pack with bean sprouts, rice, some of the main. *Meals have enough for a couple small appetites to share, or a full meal with an extra plate will get the added soup, salad... with the servings split to smaller quantity for the extra plate. Seems that is done frequently, especially if appetizer or sushi rolls are added on from waiting time or startup at the table. Flavors: several sauces are provided as cooking and as dipping sauce, one garlic tamari(?), and a light ginger dip sauce. There are 2-4 flare up sessions on the grill as start of next portion starts to cook. This removes some of the moisture, gives a surface flavor and texture, as well as burns off the alcohol (brandy?) leaving a bit of caramelized flavor as retained on the grill that is cleared between courses. Thus a flare of fire, and a poof of steam. Seeing these at your own table as well as scattered around the room is impressive. ** Good flavor, good selections, great spectacle, always worth coming back and waiting time. Don't come before another event because this can easily be 2hr+ from arrival to exit, but you are there with the ones you brought for company in the first place. It's worth it. Japanese palace is a place that calls me back sporadically, not as costly as a core steakhouse, but lots more pomp and show. $$$ 20-50pp, additional depending on selections, drinks and apps... read more

Some friends of ours took us here for dinner. We sat in the bar and ordered drinks (super strong and yummy) and ordered apps and food. We ordered special sushi without avocado in our orders because our friend is allergic to avocado and the guy brought it out and said no avocado and you could clearly see it had avocado so thankfully we saw it before she put it in her mouth or we would've had to call 911. Good place to celebrate. A well established facility with a lot of recommendations. We finally made it to the west side for a fun evening. The style is Hibachi, and you get to have dinner with people you have never seen before. All the traditional train horn, banging metal utensils, flipping scrap food, and talented expedition of knife skills. The food was great and had plenty to take home. Its has probably been nearly 20 years since I've been to Japanese Palace, so we thought it was high time for a family outing. They do not take reservations, so plan ahead. With two kids in tow, we showed up right at opening and had no issues getting a table. For those like me who have fond memories of coming to Japanese Palace as a kid, well you'll be happy to know this place hasn't changed one bit. Untouched by time. When so many cherished places and neighborhood staples lost these past few years, I think that's a great thing. I ordered the the Japanese Palace Special, which was probably the exact same thing I ordered in high school. Hard to beat a little of beef, chicken, and shrimp, cooked right in front of you. Of course, you go to a place like Japanese Palace for the show and that was on point as well. We all were pleased with the food and the kiddos thoroughly enjoyed the experience as well, albeit probably much to distracted to eat (yay leftovers!). My favorite is always the fried rice, which we had plenty of. Its nice to see that after all these years, Japanese Palace still providing great food and experiences. We do plan to be back and might even plan ahead and pop into their comfy bar for a Kirin or two before getting started. This is our second time coming here and it is so good! There is plenty of seating on the habachi side of the restaurant. The eggplant is one of our favorite parts of the meal. Both times we have come we have shared the Japanese Palace Special and fried rice. We added an extra order of zucchini, which was perfect but next time we will also add an extra order of eggplant. For our drinks, my husband ordered the hot sake and I ordered the mai tai, they were both delicious. The service was great, the cook was fantastic especially since we were alone at the table. Great atmosphere, presentation is great, food is good, service is meh. The ladies are not very friendly but the hibachi guys are fabulous.

Have been coming here almost 40 years. It has remained good. I will continue to come back. I liked the fact they serve egg plant with onions, mushrooms, bell pepper and zucchini for the mixed vegetables and not broccoli that is usually prevalent in Chinese dishes. The fried rice is good and the portions are more than adequate. We always have left overs but then we usually start with a sushi appetizer. Wished they still have you the little scoop of orange sherbet at the end, but things do change. I recommend the cooking table seating and enjoy watching them prepare my food. I am a huge hibachi lover and was so excited to try this place. We took our friends and the kids to eat. The location itself was clean, staff were nice and chef did a good job entertaining us and our kids. I ordered the chicken and fried rice, and husband got the steak. We got fried rice for the kids and due to what is usually a large portion of food we share the chicken and veggies. My son loves the typical hibachi fried rice with just rice and egg and they added in some veggies to it that we had to pick around. I ended up getting him steamed rice because he wouldnt eat it. The veggies were missing broccoli, which is at most other hibachi places, but they did add a large amount of bean sprouts that they cooked at the end. It wasn't a great addition in my opinion. 1st let me say Im not a fan of the seating. We were not told that a booth option was available if you dont want the hibachi seating. Which neither me nor my husband are fans of sitting at the table with stangers especially on our date nights. So after over hearing that a booth was an option we moved. The food was pretty good but not a lot of options. The chicken fried rice was great and probably enough for 2 or 3 people. I dont think that we will be back. read more

Never did eat the hibachi here so I'm not writing reviews based on that. I solely am writing a review on couple of sushi here. Now if you like salmon sashimi!! This is the place to get them!! Sushi chef cut them thick, generous portion for their $19, it's not fishy, it's fresh and it's just delicious!!!! Their eel it's also pretty amazing.. and their specialties sushi are pretty damn good also. The service can be slower at times, and pricing is definitely on the pricier side in town for sushi (for specialties) but for sashimi definitely worth paying it and I think it's possibly the lower price in town. Ok.. this hibachi spot was nowhere on my radar.. we got invited to a birthday there, and it was such a pleasant surprise. It has an interesting layout, a great bar area, and the hibachi / sushi situation was perfectly what we wanted and hoped for. It had been five years since I dined here. I consider it as a special occasion place and tonight that occasion was my son's 38th birthday. He had a couple of sushi rolls and I had the hibachi shrimp dinner with fried rice. Everything was excellent. Sushi rolls are large and so are the hibachi dishes. Mine was loaded with sauteed veggies, fried rice and shrimp. Nick managed to finish his sushi while I got my leftovers to go. Decor is typical of Japanese restaurants with a relaxing ambiance. Went in to celebrate 3 birthdays. Arrived early and weee sat within a reasonable time. The table we were sat at was directly in line to the front door and every time it opened we got a blast of cold air (it was pretty cold outside). I asked to be reseated. And was told no problem. Got back to the podium and was told we were 2nd seating and there was about an hour wait. I asked why they didn't tell me that before I gave up our place, couldn't give me an answer and weren't concerned we would have to wait. I would like to say the food is great, as I've heard it is, however driving over an hour to have bad service means I won't ever know. read more

The ONLY reason I didn't give 5 stars , was the drink/refill service a pretty slow. That being said, We used to live closer and came here 25 years ago, it's still wonderful. I am so sad to even write this review. I was extremely disappointed with the dinner service we had last night. The chef provided 0 entertainment. We had 3 kids at the table and the main reason we come is for entertainment while the food is cooked. The chef did not even look up half the time. He did not do the egg toss which I thought was standard in any hibachi type restaurant, literally look down at the food the entire time.... Well, my wife and I went out to the Japanese Palace last nite for dinner as it was nice a few years back. Now days they seat you around the cook and grill and no private booths or tables. When you order, your order will be cooked as the cook makes all the other dishes for every one around the grill. You never get your full order but you get what the cook is making at the time. Lousy idea, when I order I want my meal at one time and not in sections. Besides there are times you don't want to be around a group of people that you don't know. Now, about the food, very simple, it was LOUSY, but the price was the biggest thing in the place. I don't mind a bit going to expensive restaurants when it worth it but this place is a joke and the audacity to charge a non cash adjustment if you pay by credit card. This place is a disaster. Ridiculously expensive. I'm a single person with some couple and only had 1 drink and it was $74. They not only charged automatic 20% tip but then another 4% because it was debit card instead of cash. i had cash in my purse but was never told they charged extra.
