The light batter with a light coating of curry gives this the extra wow! Served with glass noodles, seaweed salad and some grapes! A must try item. i am also a fan if the hoisin pork ribs. Tender and moist meat with a tangy hoisin glaze makes this my second favorite item. There are other surprises like duck meatballs, a great and creative set of drinks. We came as a group of 5 for dinner and it was a great meal. However, the service was incredibly slow, so that is my reason for the 4 stars. The Pros: -excellent food- we had sushi rolls, udon soup, edamame, fried rice, curry and steak. Everybody loved their food- very fresh and incredibly flavorful. We also had a couple of their cocktails and sake flights- all very high quality as well. -table service was quick- constantly had ice cold water and our cups were always filled immediately -the view- unbeatable!!! Incredible sunset! -cleanliness - very, very clean! The Cons: -service was really "off" in timing. We were seated and waited about 20 minutes before anybody came and brought water or took a drink order. It definitely took another 15 minutes for our drinks to show up. The waitress took our order quickly, but she was unable to tell us about the dishes, nor could she come even close to pronouncing them. Then, when we were done and asked for our check, it took another 20 minutes for her to bring it. So, there was a lot of sitting around and waiting without food or drinks in front of us. Probably one of the best meals we had here on the trip. Food was spectacular and it wasn't crazy busy like other restaurants at Whalers village. You can tell the chef took their time on the each dish. For rolls we got: chef's special and shrimp tempura. Both were delighful. The fish was extremely fresh on the chef's roll and shrimp tempura had a different spin than ones we've had before. My boyfriend also got the filet with a side of sweet potato hash (sooo good). Even if you're not staying in the Hyatt Recency still highly recommend to give this a try! read more

As they said they would, at the appointed time , they called my name. When I answered they said the no ' longer had a table for one@ and would I Bind sitting at the bar. I simply cannot say enough good things about this place. We dined here recently with a party of 14 and everything was great. The general manager is great to work with and helped us secure a table in the Tengu room. He personally emailed me to check on our experience the next day and I was happy to tell him it was perfection. Out server was great, food was fabulous and the views to die for. A very classy place with a beautiful setting of the beach in Hyatt Regency Maui. We came here twice, while I enjoyed the seasonal vegetables stirfry and the veggie roll, my husband had the fried rice and seafood curry bowl. He was raving by the end of the meal and tht was enough from him. I never tried sushi and vegetarian nevertheless but I must say I loved it. The umami rolls through the palate and idid not feel like a salad. The presentation was excellent and our server was highly attentive. Arguably the worst service we have experienced. Combination of terrible front desk, way over booked, valet was a joke. Sushi was good but your in Hawaii, kind of expect that. Everything about the hotel and just getting seated was awful. Combine that with much better sushi spots in the Island and this is second tier hotel restaurant at best. I believe our server had a giant party sat after her few small dining area tables. So we all just keep talking to each other like, "hey how's looking at your dessert going?! Every entree in every restaurant starts at $30, even the pasta. So Japengo gets our vote because of the yummy sushi rolls. if you like sushi, the rolls are big, so it's actually cheaper and they are REALLY good. This was the cheapest dinner for our family of 4 (we have 2 teenagers). Skip appetizers and you walk away with a bill of $120, AND literally, you can walk away - we got it to go, brought it back to our place and sat at a table by the ocean. perfection. Fast a forward a couple of years the food is not only good but outstanding . Tonight we had some rolls and the fish was amazing. The rolls were big, beautiful and delicious I'm listening to the two couples behind us talking about their food and there is not a single complaint, just how much they love the food. Our family were celebrating our mother in law 60th anniversary, such a milestone that supposed to be all smiles and happiness, we had a more that 3 months in advance reservation(15 people) for this place, we checked-in and we got 3 separate tables, our server in a attempt of get all family in one table, he spoke to the front about getting a table that was getting cleaned to seat us all there and he got the confirmation that we were getting that table and decided to wait, it supposed to be 15 mins that ended up being about 45 mins but we understood, it was busy, in the meanwhile we ordered some drinks and an appetizer, the moment arrived when our server told us that the table was ready, we proceeded to walk to the table, we were about to seat when Hoala the 'manager' showed up and stop our family to seat in that table because 'he' had a family waiting for that table for about half hour or less, one of our family members tried to explain to him that we were been waiting for almost one hour, and we asked for the manager to see if there anything that they can do to solve this situation, then Hoala just said. Well I'm the manager and there is no way for you guys to seat here. Our server started to apologize for the situation trying to calm down the situation but not Hoala, he didn't care about customer service he just wanted to prove that he had control over everything happening, not a single word about he feeling sorry for the situation, and FYI the family that Hoala sat in that table was 4 adults and 2 kids! One of our tables a round table was a 6 seating table, can you believe that? I mentioned to 'my family' let's eat somewhere else and Hoala heard that even I didn't talked to him he replied, if you want to leave you can leave just make sure you pay before you leave. That comment was rude and offensive and coming from the manager! I told him if we leave we aren't paying for that (which was nothing compared to our final bill). Then the great manager Hoala told me directly. "Do you have a problem?" What type of questions was that? Personal? Was he really trained for this position? does he really understand what the job of a manager is? We decided to stay and order dinner, when again Hoala showed up to tell us "we cannot give you guys service if you're not paying" Yes just for that, the dinner, complete separated for our initial appetizer order. We never, never mentioned not paying our dinner or final bill because we decided to stay, but again great Hoala just showed up making sure we didn't enjoyed our dinner and our night in Japengo's no to mention tha looks he gave us during the night, like he took it personal. Our poor server kept apologizing duren the rest of the night and he looked nervous and forgetting things, all because the environment created by this Hoala manager. He really made us feel uncomfortable during our dinner and the rest of the night. Hopefully management can see this review because I personally don't want any other family to go through this just because this incompetent manager Hoala. I think if he wasn't there during that night the nothing wouldn't happened, Hoala just wanted to protect his image and prove that he has all the control not caring about getting resolve something that everyone else would resolve it as the staff had it resolve prior Hoala got involved. So here are my points of this situation. 1. Hoala needs to be re trained ASAP. 2. Staff wanted to help but stopped by Hoala. 3. Food was good. 4. Customers needs better treat regardless of the situation specially in a hotel like this. 5. Hopelly management take this seriously. P.S. REALLY LONG WAIT - NOT WORTH IT I dont understand the hype of this place. Most people say this place is well known for their sushi but in my opinion the sushi here is alright. Came here for my friend's birthday and they made reservations and confirmed it. Once we got there they said that they couldnt find the reservation and that we would need to wait and they'll try to "squeeze us in" although it was confirmed that day. The wait was around 45min and so many groups of people went in and it was really annoying. We finally got seated by the host and she was rude. She handed us our menus and say "ok enjoy" in a sassy way. We waited about 15 minutes for someone to actually take our order, which made us more annoyed because it seemed as if this restaurant is slow paced. Our server was very slow, she would always walk past our table knowing that our drinks needed to either be topped off or refilled. The person who gave us our drinks, Jex, was awesome. His attitude was great and it made our experience better. He did an amazing job by checking in on us and keeping our table clean. The wait for this restaurant is unbelievably long. I wanted to fall asleep by just waiting for our food. Long story short, the wait isnt worth it. The food here is bland. Kung Pao Duck Meatballs - lacks flavor, not worth the price, presentation is nice though. Japengo Fried Rice - corn was too overwhelming, worst fried rice we ever had. Only go to the happy hour. Good portions, great food options, super reasonable prices. Do not go for full meals, prices are obscenely high (-1 star for price). We had an interesting experience due to some service issues but would still give it 5 stars given those service issues were fully remedied by the end of the happy hour. We ordered a couple cocktails and the curried calamari. Our cocktails came quickly and were very well done, well balanced. However we kept waiting on the calamari until we asked our bartender what happened as someone else who came later than us got all their food. Apparently our bartender hadn't heard our order (I suspect actually our order went to the wrong person, but no matter). He was very apologetic and ultimately comp'd not just the calamari but also the next round of drinks. It was a great example of customer service done right when things had gone wrong. On the food, our curried calamari was excellent. Unique option, hadn't seen something like this before but it works really well. Our neighbor wasn't as much a fan as he doesn't like curry (so just don't order curried anything surely...). More importantly, we had massive food envy of every app that came out of the kitchen.
