As you walk in to Roy's Ka'anapali, you pass by the photos of Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus from their last skins game here back in 2011. The average clientele is totally from that generation. It's a living, breathing time capsule. As for the food, it was mediocre. The pork ribs were not Szechuan as marketed. The calamari was thick cut and not how I had imagined it and drowning in the sauce. The pasta with grilled shrimp was decent and the keiki meals were surprising solid and a decent value. The service was solid. Coming from LA, we were envisioning the Pasadena Roy's level of quality and execution. This place is more like a banquet dinner at your grandparents' 50th anniversary. My folks and the folks in Hawaii didn't believe there was a Roy's in Baltimore once upon a time, but there was!! How do I know this, because I've eaten there twice!! When I saw that there was a Roy's about a mile from our resort, we had to check them out. Nothing special about the interior, kinda boring I'd say. It overlooks a beautiful PGA golf course that all of the big boys have played (their pictures are on the entry walls so I cheated).. Lol! Most people want to dine on the water while in Maui so Roy's better be good. Well, well, well, Roy's crushed it! Our rib appetizer was too damn big for an appetizer. We had to intentionally stop eating them to save room for our entrées and yes, those ribs were amazing! My swordfish/shrimp duo was absolutely fantastic. Her butterfish was just as good. When she shared a bite, it literally melted in my mouth. Service was impeccable, with the manager making his way over to introduce himself and offered his personal assistance as well. I'm glad I was able to experience Roy's once again, something that I thought was gone forever when they left Baltimore a few years back!! Maybe just maybe they'll try the Washington, DC area next.. I really enjoyed the fall prix fixe menu and it was fantastic. Started with the Caesar salad with seared ahi, followed by braised short ribs and tiger shrimp served with au gratin potatoes and mixed vegetables, and finished with a rich chocolate ganache cake--each dish had yummy layered flavors. I also sampled the Yama's Mama's meatloaf, which was delicious, served with creamy mashed potatoes and huge crunchy onion rings. The staff were super attentive and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. My impression was that they really enjoyed their jobs. The restaurant itself has a clean, Hawaiian-inspired atmosphere with scenic views of the Kaanapali Golf Course, Having visited other Roy's locations, I can say they maintain a consistent level of quality. We liked Roy's so much, that we ate here twice during our stay in Maui. The food was great. They put down a dish of edamame that was very good. Then, we split their version of a caesar salad. I say their version because it had cucumbers and tomatoes in it along with the romaine lettuce and a creamy caesar dressing. They were a nice addition. The first tie, as an entrée,, I had the Kaanapali Cioppino. It had seafood and local fish in it and was served in a saffron garlic tomato broth. The second time, I had the Misoyaki Butterfish. It is truly delicious and it never disappoints. My husband has to Hibachi Grilled Atlantic Salmon. There weren't many restaurant that served salmon, so my husband really enjoyed it. As it was my husband's birthday, they treated us to a wonderful dish of sorbet that we split. The service both times was amazing. We were greeted as soon as we sat down. The server kept coming back to check to make sure that we were happy and enjoying the meal. We never felt rushed and had a nice leisurely meal. It is a very big restaurant and the tables are spread out nicely. We were not near the other tables and didn't need to listen to the conversation at the next table. When back in Maui, we would definitely return. read more

Haven't been here in years. Food is still very delicious. My fish was moist and rice cooked to perfection. The sauce was perfect. Other dishes were excellent as well. Staff is friendly and helpful. Ambiance is nice and relaxing. We came to celebrate my daughter's birthday but disappointed to find out they don't have their chocolate soufflé anymore! That was disappointing. Bring it back please. They also don't put the extra little decorations on the table and make a special birthday dessert. Everything that made that extra day memorable is gone. My daughter got a sorbet with a candle and we sang to her. I would definitely recommend coming for the food but not to come celebrate a special occasion. If you're looking for a great lunch spot with excellent service, amazing food and a beautiful view of the golf course this is definitely the place to go. I ordered the chicken katsu, and it was spot on crispy with a golden-brown crunch on the outside, while still juicy and tender inside. The white rice that came with it was perfectly warm, sticky and delicious. I also tried the chicken sandwich and oh my....it was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The fries that came with it were just as impressive, crispy, crunchy and salted exactly right. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming and attentive. Let me start by saying...Roy's has the most legit kids menu in all of Hawaii! Reasonably priced (all things considered) with lots of good food. I also always enjoy my experience visiting this restaurant. Every entrée I've had has always been beautifully presented, very tasty and mindful of local flavors. Let's begin our Hawaiian disaster here. We called Roy's to schedule a 7:30 PM reservation, but when we arrived, they told us it was booked for 7:00 PM. After waiting about 15 minutes, we were finally seated and handed menus. About 10 minutes later, someone came to take our drink orders -- we asked for a couple of sodas and two adult beverages. It took roughly 25 minutes for the drinks to arrive, and only then did our server take our food order. We got our appetizers in a reasonable time, but then the nightmare really began -- we waited over an hour for our main courses. When the entrees finally arrived, several dishes were wrong. Some were overcooked, and others were missing ingredients that were clearly listed on the menu. Not once during that long wait did our server come by to apologize or give us any update like, "Your food is almost ready." The only time our waiter seemed to notice anything was when he stopped by to ask how the steak was -- completely ignoring the other four entrees on the table that were just as expensive. When he realized the steak was badly overcooked, he removed two salads and the steak from our bill. I think he could tell we were exhausted and frustrated by that point. We had chosen Roy's because we had read glowing reviews and thought it would be a special, memorable meal for our once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Instead, it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had anywhere. Hawaii is home to incredible restaurants -- this is not one of them. One star deduction for their website menu prices not matching what they are currently charging. We decided to celebrate our anniversary at Roy's after a recommendation from a friend and checking their menu online. We had reservations yet it took a few minutes before we were seated. While waiting at the hostess desk we noted that the noise level was quite high and the restaurant had a casual dining ambiance. On looking at the menu I noticed that the prices were higher than what I had seen online just an hour earlier. My dish was $6 more and my husband's was $7 more. Our fish dishes were delicious. Normally when we eat out we can only eat half our plates and take the rest to eat later. The portion sizes were moderate with nothing left for later. We split a dessert. I know prices on Maui are really high, but we were shocked that our total for just one entrée each and the split dessert, no appetizers, no drinks, came to $175 after taxes and tip. That left a bad taste for the rest of our visit to the island. read more

Absolutely fantastic dinner. The place is lovely, very comfortable and modern. Service is friendly, honest and absolutely impeccable. The food- so good and beautifully plated. Calamari and rib appetizers are supreme. Pineapple martini is amazing. I had the meatloaf, just delicious. Daughter had tiger shrimp over garlic fried rice and loved it. Salmon looked gorgeous. Chocolate toffee mousse cake provided perfect finish. I guess the bottom line is that you can pay more, but you won't find a nicer place to dine in west Maui. So I made this reservation on March 1st. The open table app had an 8 pm choice. We took that one. I assumed this restaurant was open later than that but we found out I assumed wrong. That is on me. I was texted to confirm our reservation the day before. Which I confirmed. Then the night we are all getting ready to go I get a text telling me my table is ready 45 minutes before my reservation. What??? Am I late??? Am now going to lose my table because I am not down there? I checked my reservation. 8 pm. But by this time I am so pissed at this we almost cancelled. I have never had this happen to me ever. Do you think I am hanging out down outside your restaurant an hour early? Maybe change your wording. Maybe we can accommodate an early arrival if wanted. Sorry to say this ruined my evening. So the food was a formality. I think we had coconut shrimp appetizer. Which was good. Blackened shrimp which was good. Crusted Sea Bass was liked. Pricey restaurant with a casual vibe--definitely no need to dress up if you don't want to. I came for late afternoon dinner with my almost-3-year-old. She had to order a Keiki meal --$18, so not cheap. But you get an appetizer of quesadilla and celery and carrot dip before your main course (we ordered the hibachi salmon which was cooked the perfect amount--not overcooked but also not undercooked for the kiddo). And then you get a vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup and sprinkles, which my daughter was very very excited about. I ordered the misoyaki butterfish and the fish itself was excellent. So tender and melts in your mouth. The accoutrements were good but not impressive. For the price, I would expect more fine dining plating and finely prepared sides. Service was great. Roy's Kaanapali served us hostility masked by politeness. Arriving 15 minutes early for our reservation, we found the waiting area sparse but adequate for us all to sit once another party was seated. The restroom was clean and stocked. However, the hostess--a dismissive blonde woman with a bun--tried seating us, including our minor children, in the bar. When we requested another table, she curtly insisted none were available by the window. After clarifying that we hadn't requested one by a window, she led us to a table near the kitchen--a few feet from a four-top table by the window sitting empty. That set the tone for the night. Service remained unwelcoming and rude. Our waiter, Michael, was mostly absent and brusque when present, cutting us off mid-sentence. Only one server, Sarah, showed any warmth and responded to us when we requested something. The food was mostly good but flawed. The mai tais came garnished with limes that were brown. My husband enjoyed his steak, though they were out of the lobster tail he wanted to add to it. My grilled au and shrimp duo arrived lukewarm, the fish dried out. Our daughter found her honey mustard short rib just "okay," while our son's ribeye was well-prepared but the plate presentation was clunky and lazy. The calamari was a hit, but the Caesar salad wasn't worth the price, nor was the beet salad, which seemed to feature canned, diced beets. Service was slow--our entrées took over 20 minutes. Empty dishes and glasses gathered on the table because Michael was too busy standing at the pass to bother checking on us. In the open kitchen, cooks lacked proper equipment like a salamander, resorting to makeshift methods like holding food up to the broiler, leading to unevenly/improperly cooked dishes like my au. The final straw? Watching a party of two get seated at the once "unavailable" window table. We paid over $400 for average food and inhospitable service, spending the meal pointing out disparities in how we were treated. Lesson learned: we won't return and I don't recommend it. read more

My expectations were truly met when we came here for dinner. We'd never been here in the past because I thought it might be too expensive. Well I'm older now with more disposable income so why not. The restaurant shares the building with the golf course club. I appreciated the free parking. The restaurant is very spacious, clean, and modern inside. The server Michael from Florida was super friendly. My wife liked her Chablis wine and my Hawaiian margarita was very refreshing. The ahi tuna and Caesar salad were excellent appetizers. We are big Roy's fans, but this location lacks the friendly-Hawaiian atmosphere you'd expect at Roys. It's sterile, more of a cafeteria vibe and generally unwelcoming. We waited an about 5-10 minutes to be greeted by someone upfront and seated in the noisy bar with the afternoon golfers even though the entire restaurant was open. The food was disappointing as well and very unusual for Roys. The prix fix special Was a play on surf and turf- short rib and grilled shrimp. It was tough and stringy meat, with dry overcooked shrimp- also it was served in a bowl which seamed like an odd plating choice since I had to use a knife bad fork to cut the meat, which is difficult in a bowl! I assumed it would at least be short rib with an Asian flavor profile- but unfortunately it was not. More like grandmas meat and potatoes style which would have been fine in a winter setting, not Hawai'i and not Roy's! Overall just an expensive disappointment- save your money! read more

We enjoyed the meals , but very surprised on how a well know high class restaurant would run out of food , we were celebrating my husband birthday, my bday and anniversary and flew to Maui to try Roy's honey short ribs and he had to settle with fried chicken since server said they ran out of short ribs which was a disappointment since he has been eating chicken ever since our 2 night stay in Maui, which our stay was not as great due to to power outage also in the island had that went on whole day from like 7pm all the way to the next day at 12n, we would of loved for both us to try Roy's honey short ribs which I told my husband we just going to end up having to do a 4hr drive to Vegas to try Roy's ribs , and We also ordered the lava cake to celebrate my husband bday which did not look presentable compared to the photos we saw posted on Yelp in came with chocolate syrup every where and not put well together which I thought all that chocolate comes out from lava cake once we cut it but at-least they were nice to compensate that Charge and catch that themselves without us saying anything about it but then again sever did bring out a Hawaiian ice cream saying Happy Birthday on the plate which it was actually a nice surprise which ice cream was incredible and with the reason of being there to celebrate our anniversary and both our birthdays since to us this is splurged restaurant since we are not people who can really afford this types of meals but for the occasion we do . I love coming here when we end our trips to Maui! The food here is flavorful, consistent, and the service is ALWAYS top notch! The staff are always very personable even though they're always short since Covid and then the Lahaina fire. They have wonderful work ethics and you don't see people standing around. They help each other out and when you need something anyone will be willing to help you. Besides the service the two other main reasons I gave Roy's a 5 start rating is their Misoyaki butterfish and how accommodating they were for my daughter. The butterfish is always cooked to perfection every time I go there it's flaky and the miso flavoring is never over powering. Our server said that they marinate their fish for 72hrs to help ensure that the fish absorbs the flavor and the few times they ran out people actually left. Yes it's that good and I'm not a big fish eater too! Secondly they always take care of the keiki! The menu is small for the kids but they get a 3 course meal! It starts with veggies and a quesadilla followed by this main course and lastly followed by ice cream! Best of all our server let us modify our daughter's main course to how ever she wanted it. So she got chicken strips with fries and it was all really good! We always make it a point to make reservations before we go here and to make sure we get seated in the event that it rains and luaus get cancelled. read more

This was my first stop on my Lahaina vacation, as Roy's was near my hotel! They have a very beautiful sunset view. When I dine I like to ask waitstaff their favorite foods. Both the hostess and my waitperson said the Misoyaki Butterfish was their favorite. When I tell you that fish melted the second it hit my mouth. WOW. The miso flavor is offset by a bit of caremelly sweetness that doesn't overpower the light fish. It was so, so goood! I also must highlight the ahi tuna in butter sauce. We had a sunset timed reservation tonight, and despite SIX empty, cleared and set tables near the front windows we were seated in the back, dark, window-less corner. When I asked if we could be seated near the window the hostess said we'd need to wait for 30 minutes. Ummm, why? The place was nearly empty. The restaurant has removed several tables and is not operating anywhere near capacity. We opted for just apps instead of a full dinner and watched as all but one of the window tables remained vacant. The food was very nice but never coming back. Outdated decor and terrible customer service. I'm so sorry Roy. I hope someone saves what used to be a real treasure. read more
