Japango is one of my most favorite restaurants in Maui. I try to get there every year for my birthday. This year, something was off. I suspect it has a lot to do with the DraStic decline in tourists due to the mass of Lahaina fires one year ago. They are also remodeling the restaurant so we had to dine in the front bar area. That was not a problem. The issue was that our waitress would disappear on us for long periods of time. There were only three or four tables, but we waited over 40 minutes for raw food. It doesn't take 40 minutes to prepare a sushi roll and a tray of Hamachi sashimi. Anyway, I will certainly give them another chance, but this was not a typical dining experience. I hope everyone continues to visit Maui. They desperately need our support. read more

Everything was . This tray included the Blackened Ahi Roll (4 stars) which was great, but the 5 star of our dinner was the Kaanapali Roll! It was as delectable a sushi roll as I have ever had. All of fish was extremely fresh. The larger cucumber piece provided that great crunch and the sweet, tangy and spicy sauce on the Kaanapali Roll drove it home! Job well done!! read more

So I am torn on this review because I think it was a five star experience but unfortunately as everything else seems to be at the resorts in the Hawaiian islands is way over price for what you're getting. If that is OK with you that I will deathly give this place a five star for me it's still a struggle because you're literally just paying an additional fee for the fact you're already up in a resort. But we had Darrell as a bartender and he was awesome we tried multiple appetizers/tapa style options as well as did sushi. We also had the shaking noodles and fried rice which are both awesome so over the course of two visits food wise and service wise it was great. read more

We waited for 40 minutes even though we had a reservation. Once we were finally seated the sun was blazing in my daughter and husbands eyes. Our kids ordered the salad off the kids menu and it was a light layer on a side plate of what looked like a spring mix salad for $10 each. Once the salad was served they didn't bring the dressing for the salad for an addition 10 minutes. We had to order an additional plate for the kids to share. The rolls were ok at most. They didn't offer dessert and we had to wave the waiter down for additional drinks. Mostly disappointed with the service and the lack of attention to detail. Came to Japengo for my birthday dinner. The place is absolutely gorgeous. It's in a beautiful hotel, it's dimly lit and sits right on the beach. The ambiance is unmatched. Our server was fantastic as well. The sushi roll was well worth it with fish that tasted like it was just caught that morning. This is where the delight ends. The entrees fell short. The noodles didn't have much taste. I asked for chili sauce to add some sort of flavor. The rice with the curry bowl was undercooked and the curry a bit watery. Overall, I was very disappointed. We enjoyed our dinner here, but it is super busy and gets pretty crowded. The food was delicious. We got lettuce cups, calamari, pork BAO buns, the steak, and nigiri. Everything was delicious. However, it took about 30 minutes for us to get seated even with a reservation, and it took another 60 minutes to get our food. The atmosphere is great, as it is right beside the ocean with great views. And the service was very good. read more

Really enjoyed the appetizers. I appreciated the fact that I can order half portions. It's like all the stuff was meant to be shared. Super disappointed with the sushi my waiter recommended. The ahi tuna roll was pushed as a crowd favorite. It had just a ton of fluff on it and barely any substance. There was hardly any tuna in or on the roll. I felt like they threw on frivolous toppings to make it look pretty when in actuality there was no substance. All rice...barely any fish. Not great at all. Also don't get the eel and avocado roll. No eel. Just eel sauce. Super disappointed. I have no idea how this can be an award winning restaurant. I'd try the sashimi next time. Firstly, we walked in and they had us down for dinner a different day than what we booked, even after I had called the resort the day of to confirm. When we got there they were confused. They ended up seating us but we had to ask to be changed to better seats. There were tons of outdoor spaces available yet they tried to sit us inside near the sushi bar. Why would you want visitors not to enjoy the view with the food and get the best outcome? After a tip, they moved us. This is where it gets worse. Our waitress took her sweet time doing everything. Understandably, she had many tables, but on top of getting everything 30 minutes after we asked for something (like water, for one) she had a terrible attitude. It was so bad that we actually felt the need to call the manager and let them know. When we asked for something more than once she would basically throw the items at the table, not look at our faces and walk away. We asked for a different waitress, as she literally ruined the night and experience for us. Sushi was decent, but nothing that would make me want to return. Some of What we had: Hamachi sashimi- thickly cut, not too flavorful, but not a terrible option. Spicy edamame- I've had better Ikura with ukura on top: fresh, this is a favorite. Magura sushi- poorly cut sashimi, rice wouldn't stick Chefs special- the best part about this was the uni on top Rainbow roll- decent mixture nothing special Spicy tuna roll- spicy! Always a good idea. We had a few hot plates in the party as well and they claimed they were good. Overall, sushi was just a pretty view and experience was absolutely terrible. Food was great. No complaints there. This review is mainly for the service. The waiter conveniently added 30$ more to the tip we added to the check. The waiter asked us if we were staying at the hyatt and offered to charge to the room, to which we saw no issues. Only when we got back home and checked the hotel invoice did we see something off. The staff at hyatt were very professional in refunding the extra charge. I would encourage diners to take a photo of the receipt if they are charging to the room. We ordered the spicy edamame which came out over cooked and seemed like it had been sitting for a while and then reheated. Rolls were very bland, they look much better than they tasted. Carpaccio was decent but had a weird sauce that I didn't feel paired well with the fish. Definitely not worth the prices they are charging. I unfortunately got swayed by good review pictures and came here for my birthday. The best thing I ate was the free birthday dessert so that speaks for itself. Located within the Hyatt Regency, Japengo is raved as the best Japanese cuisine in Maui, and this place did not disappoint! My wife and I got into the resort after 12 hours of flying, so we knew we would be hungry and wanting high quality food. We started with the spicy edamame which were great and ordered drinks, the Halona Kai Sunset and Kanpai-Jito. Drinks were as expected, didn't feel like much liquor, but not surprising. For our entrees we ordered: Japengo fried rice without shrimp - great flavor, huge portion! they do half servings which we highly recommend) blackened ahi roll - delicious, fresh, and best item of the night! rising sun roll - typical classic spicy roll Outside the food, the restaurant is located outside with scenic views on the water, very clean, the service was quick and attentive, and lived up to the hype! We waited a while trying to get the attention of multiple servers when our sushi came out with no soy sauce or chopsticks. I also maybe think we got the wrong items. We started with the risotto which was very good! This was the one thing I loved. We also got the Ka'anapali roll and the veggie roll. I thought the Ka'anapali roll was good, but it was pretty much your average sushi restaurant roll. The veggie roll was nice because it had a variety of veggies instead of the usual cucumber, carrots, and cream cheese, but it could use some sort of sauce or topping. Overall, was not really impressed given the cost of the meal. Update: Came back a couple days later. The service was a little better, but def still seemed super rushed and busy. This restaurant was selected for its convenience. We were staying at the Hyatt and wanted a reservation at the hotel since we had a full day road to hana tour. We had a reservation for 7:45pm but were not seated to eat until 8:30pm. I had to go up to the counter several times to see when we were going to be seated and eventually told them to just text us when the table would be ready and went to the beer garden. The food and service were just okay, and the price was not worth it. If you are staying in the area, I would recommend trying a different restaurant before this one. Had a great dinner in this very beautiful restaurant in the Hyatt Regency in Kaanapali Thursday night right at sunset. Excellent service by Ben and every dish was superb. My fillet mignon was delicious and the risotto side with corn,tomato and onion was rich and terrific. My wife and others had the chicken over garlic pan fried noodles and loved it. Sushi appetizers were also great especially the blacked ahi roll. We got a couple delightful desserts to take home. Not an inexpensive evening but no regrets not even the next day. read more

The question of the night was how did we not know about this place sooner?? I have been going to Maui for over 5 years now, and never tried Japengo until this last trip. It was amazing. We only ordered from the sushi menu and everything was 11/10. I might go as far to say this is the best sushi on the island. Also the location is pretty unbeatable. Will be back! read more

We showed up to our reservation at 8:15, didn't get seated until 8:25, which was fine for me, however, the hosts at the front desk were rude to my wife and I when we went to check in. We were met with some passive aggressive "not yet's" by two hosts, even when it was time for our reservation. I checked back in and asked at 8:20 and had the same reaction. The eventual seating at the restaurant was an odd experience, we were met with two glasses of oddly tasting water, followed by the server, which of whom showed up about 40 minutes into getting our menus (we knew our orders by heart by then including the appetizers haha). The server was rushed, but I won't hate on her, it seemed like she was waiting 8 other tables right next to us at the time. The wait for food was about an hour, which is common considering there's only 3 people behind the sushi bar cooking (expect this if you're going lol). When got our food, my sushi had a fly on the side of it. The chef remade it, but we still had to pay for my food (make note everyone, even when there's a fly, you still gotta buy!). I wasn't a happy camper to say the least; I'm under the assumption that we had to still pay for my food because my wife and I look quite young, despite being married for 5 years. Anywho, we got the check and BOOKED it out of there. We ended up paying 80 bucks. Side note, avoid the miso, it's 10 bucks, and it's just as big a bowl as you'd get at any sushi restaurant, and tasting wise-- just the same. If you want good sushi, and probably the same quality (minus the scenery), you can go to any other sushi restaurant and find the same stuff. read more

Japengo restaurant is a waterfront restaurant on the property of the lovely Hyatt hotel. Service and ambiance was great. My husband ordered some sushi and pork buns and loved his meal. I'm vegan and ordered the tofu veggie stir fry and the spicy eggplant side dish. Sadly the flavors for both were not very tasty. This is why I removed a star from this review. We loved this place when we were in Maui 5 years ago and had to go back. Spicy edamame and the clams were two delicious starters. The spicy edamame had good flavor and was not too spicy until we got to the bottom of the bowl. The ones that were soaked in sauce were spicy. The clams were very meaty. I have not been back here since it was Cascades and forgot how breathtaking the view is here. That coupled with locals in outriggers, kayaks, and SUPS that float by at sunset, with Hawaiian music playing in the background, it was quintessential Hawaii. The big reason why I was hesitant to try Japengo all this time was the price so when I saw that they have a happy hour with wonderful cocktails that included lilikoi puree, I knew I wanted to finally try it out. Happy Hour is from 5-6 with certain cocktails for $7 and some discounted appetizers. Sparkling Pina Sangria - I would have liked a little more lilikoi puree to it as I couldn't taste the one thing that attracted me most to this cocktail. However, it was light and refreshing and perfect on a hot day. Yuzu Mule - This was not a happy hour special so was $12 but we had just read about it in the Maui Times that it is now Japengo's signature cocktail so we had to try it. It was surprisingly good and not overwhelming as I expected. To get an idea on the chef's style and flavors, we ordered 3 apps to try Curry dusted calamari - The hurricane noodles, chukka salad, and grapes that accompanied the calamari lightly dusted with a little curry flavor had a nice wow factor. This was our favorite appetizer that we ended up ordering another. Hoisin Glazed Pork Ribs - If it was just regular hoisin pork ribs, it would have been just okay but the mac nuts on top gave it a smokier flavor and the green apple slaw, a delicious contrasting crunch that just made it work. Manila clams - was a bit too spicy for me and the sauce too oily. It would've been nice if it was a thicker, less oily sauce that we can scoop onto the pita bread so was our least favorite of the 3 and would pass on this to go towards the extra curry calamari instead. The calamari and pork ribs is tempting me to come back for either my husband's or my birthday dinner next year. With mixed reviews about the sushi, it was too bad I have not had a chance to try the sushi to judge for myself which is a big part of this restaurant's menu to sway us one way or another. The regular sushi menu is on the pricier side at about $20+ per roll so I would like to have seen a special on a sushi roll or two on the happy hour menu to wow us and justify that $20 per roll price tag during regular hours. Also aside from the fried rice, I would like to see a couple of options more of substance in the happy hour menu (that sushi roll or two would be a great choice to offer) to absorb the alcohol. We both would have ordered a second cocktail if the apps weren't so light that we were afraid we get too buzzed to either walk or drive the 2 miles back. Overall, I was impressed with the Happy Hour between the Hawaiian meles, the ono food, and the beautiful views. read more

Staying at the Hyatt during our trip and was recommended that Japengo is a must go for sushi and food. 2nd night we made reservations and went to the restaurant. The best thing about the restaurant was the view everything else was mediocre. The drink- ordered the pineapple lychee tini - the drink was bland and not what I expected. No taste but the alcohol. The virgin pinacolada was bland. The mahi mahi was a bit tough. Thai chicken lettuce cup was too salty no flavor just salty. The rolls were good but not the best. The restaurant was very disappointing for food but at least we got some good pictures of the sunset. I would not go back. I would not recommend if you are going for food. read more

Loved the sunset view but didn't care for the meal. The spicy tuna sushi was ok but the shrimp tempura was super dry and had these tempura tiny balls on them that hurt the gums. The udon was a miss for us oddly sour and bitter shrimp and scallops with no fish. Desserts (kanapaali pie and masaladas donuts) and the view are why I gave 3 stars along with great service. Went twice during a recent trip. Tried a few rolls, nigiri and the curry dusted calamari. Nigiri and calamari were excellent, but the rolls although good were not among the best I've had. Overall a really enjoyable experience, obviously an amazing view and ambiance. read more
