This is go-to spot for me. I love how cheap the menu is. They serve a variety of dishes, but what I really like are the dry noodles and appetizers. Really great service too. But 101 Cafe is old school vibe Taiwanese cafe with cheap eats and rustically put together pork chop rices that rings very nostalgic for American-born Taiwanese millennials. What used to be a sub-$10 dish is not $10+ for not much value, but just rings a small part of our childhoods. Come here knowing that you're not getting an incredible meal, but more a meal reminiscent of 1990s/2000s Asian diners. The service isn't great, but it will suffice. It's like if your RBF-faced Asian aunt from Taiwan were nonchalantly taking your order and bringing out the dishes in no particular order, with not a care in the world about anything else. Taiwanese food hold a special place in my heart. This place offered most of the "home cooking" Taiwanese food I would expect. It is set in the other end of the H Mart shopping strip and has ample space for in person dining. I will say that when we first walked in, the strong odor of stinky tofu made me question whether the sewage was leaking...lol... but once you realize it is, in fact, stinky tofu, your nerves, calm down. We ordered food from the waiter and it was out in probably about five minutes. Everything felt and tasted cooked to order and had a good flavor. I did not feel like the place was overly clean, or had any emphasis on cleanliness, but it did not feel dirty, either... Just sort of so-so on the cleanliness part. The guy working the cash register and also taking orders and bringing out the food was friendly and somewhat attentive, including to the other tables. He spoke Mandarin and I suspect some Taiwanese. We ordered 什錦炒米粉 (choy suey rice noodle) but was served 什錦炒麵 (choy suey noodle). Other dishes (total 5) were correct. I informed the waitress about 什錦炒米粉 (rice noodle) mistake. The waitress consulted with her superior, and replied me that the wrong dish (什錦炒麵, noodle) cannot be replaced because the wrong dish was already done. I just couldn't believe what I heard. My astonishment must have made the waitress avoid coming by our table afterward. So I called the waitress over and ordered the correct 什錦炒米粉 (rice noodle) dish again. I was not going to ruin family time with my home-coming son because of a wrongly served dish. We drove 30 miles to taste my son's youth favorite dishes in this "好年冬" restaurant on the eve of his leaving. We always order 什錦炒米粉 (rice noodle) in the past 30+ years in "好年冬" restaurant (Irvine). It's beyond comprehension for us to order 什錦炒麵 (noodle) instead of 什錦炒米粉 (rice noodle). And it is almost amusing to hear "the wrong dish is already done" as an excuse to force customers eat and pay for the wrong dish. I still paid the full meal expense (including wrong dish) in the restaurant. There is no point to argue to a cashier for a wrong dish served IF the restaurant chooses to overlook its own mistake and disregard a customer's report. Ordering via the QR Code is easy if you know what you want. Boss Lady is real friendly and helped. Saw Almond Tofu and ordered it but they already ran out. Cold Cuts: intestine, chitterlings-excellent with ginger and dipping (jiang you gao). Stirfried Pork Liver taste on, not overcooked and came with oyster mushroom, celery and other yummy veggies. Stinky Tofu good-just wished temperature a notch higher. Oyster Omelet-good flavor, the sauce, the flurry consistency, oyster, Taiwanese bokchoy. And this must be enjoyed as it serves up. Oyster Intestine Combo Noodle (o ah me suao) excuse my terrible Taiwanese pronunciation Iced Black Tea lovely. We also had a few not so Taiwanese dishes: Fried dumplings good crisp. Got the pork chop that came with rice, mince meat, half an egg and broccoli. The pork chop was huge battered in rice four. Crispy on the outside. Delicious on the inside. Perfectly cooked broccoli retained its beautiful green color while tender to eat. The sweet mince meat complemented the semi salty pork. The was lightly marinated to give it a golden brown color. Wish it was a full egg. Couldn't finish it all. Luckily my better half finished it. She had the mince meat on rice. Came with broccoli and half an egg. Portion was smaller than what I had. She was totally surprised how much she really liked this dish. That's a surprise because she like savory more than sweet. The menu carries a wide variety of selections sure to satisfy anyone with something. I find the pricing reasonable for what we've had thus far. Drinks, however, I thought was pricey for $1.95 soda can. Indoor seating is not available yet but out door seating is not bad. It was nice in the evening with the sun going down. I ordered pickup from the Fantuan app and it was RAINING and COLD outside and the guy said I couldn't eat inside and had to go outside where it was cold and wet. Personally I love their food, it's a delicious Taiwanese restaurant. Owner is friendly and efficient. I can get my food within 5-10 minutes after placing the order. Most importantly, despite the high inflation at this time, their price is very reasonable. I can still have a lunch special within $13 including tax with a good food portion. Where else can you find this type of restaurant now? They used to have several locations in Walnut and Rowland Heights, I believe this is the last and only location left. Decent Taiwanese styled Chinese food located inside of the H Mart Plaza. It offers a wide range of dishes. It also has goose meat, which I used to love at this restaurant. They have now brought the goose dish back and I will try it on our next visit. On weekdays, it has a lunch special menu that offers a quick lunch at a reasonable price, including the Beef Noodle Soup. I saw 101 Cafe both on Yelp and while casually exploring the H Mart Plaza. There is a ton of parking and general stores nearby ranging from food to fitness to groceries. I was in the mood for rice cakes, so I got the shredded pork with rice cakes. Overall, it was pretty "meh"... there were pork bits, and the rice cakes tasted pretty bland. The sauce was a watery soy sauce mixture and wasn't too tasty. For about $15, it was definitely too pricey given the portion size as well. May or may not return, but definitely won't be ordering that here again. As others have mentioned, there may be a language barrier, and even though I knew Mandarin, the staff were hard to understand behind their mask and very short with responses. read more

[尋味LA II]童年回憶來福靈 鑽崗台菜好年冬 今天才搞清楚有樣東西，我一直把名字給叫反了，這其實也沒啥稀奇的，全上海都把「紙餐巾」叫成「餐巾紙」，不也是反了麼？ 被我叫反的那個東西，是「百草枯」，可能是因為有樣東西叫「夏枯草」的關係，我腦子就一直管前者叫「百枯草」，直到今天找這玩意的圖片，才發它原來不是「百枯草」而是「百草枯」。 一開始我還以為「百草枯」是個仿冒品，查了一圈才知道「百枯草」是我的仿冒。 百草枯是一種除草劑，不知為什麼，這種用來除草而不是殺蟲的農藥，對人來說卻是劇毒，據說喝下一瓶蓋的話是沒救的，最後此人會整個肺部纖維化活活把自己給癟死。如今農村中所說的「喝農藥」，就專指這個。 聽上去很恐怖是不是？我在看百草枯的科普文章時就渾身不自在。同樣是除草劑，美國人發明的草甘膦就沒有毒，據說喝了也沒關係；不過百草枯也不是中國人發明的，而是英國人發明的，只是人家沒把技術轉讓給中國，後來有位叫「李德軍」的人花了八年時間「自主研發」了和英國一樣的中國百草枯，被譽為「中國百草枯之父」，還擔任了山東省農藥科學研究院院長、黨委書記。 這麼恐怖的一個東西，如果用來命名飯店，就叫「百草枯飯店」，你想不想吃吃看？你敢不敢吃吃看？反正，我是不敢。 人家台灣人膽子就大得多，台灣人在加州開了好多家「好年冬餐廳」。 好年冬，是一種農藥，專門用來殺害蟲的。這讓我想起「正義的來福靈」來，要是有家飯店叫「來福靈」，我估計是敢去的，誰讓我們永遠對「正義」比較敏感呢？ 其實，「好年冬」是句台語啦，就是「豐年」的意思，一年的收成多，那年的冬天一定過得好，所以「好年冬」；否則，就是「歹年冬」，會唱《愛拼才會贏》的朋友一定知道這個「歹」字怎麼念吧？ 這麼有趣的一家飯店，我去探探吧。前面我說的「台灣人在加州開了好多家好年冬」要修正一下，變成「不同的台灣人在加州開了好多家差不多的好年冬」，有趣！ 我去的那家在Diamond Bar，華人區，華人譯成「鑽石崗」。跑去一看，就在我喜歡的H-mart邊上，隔著五六七八九十個門面吧。 進得店中，總共十來張四人桌的樣子，居然客滿，服務員跟我說已經有二桌買單了，讓我稍等一會。 等就等吧，我就隨手拿起他們的外賣單來看。一看就可以肯定，這是家正宗台菜館，人家的繁體字一個都沒錯。 常看我文章的朋友不知是否還記得，就在不久前我「義務」幫一家叫做「上只角」的上海私房菜糾正了一下繁體錯別字，為了避免誤會，我特地在文中一開始就聲明了「本文不是說沈爺不是說飯店，只是說那個菜單設計師的」。沒想到，那家私房菜的老闆娘看到後一跳八丈高，在朋友圈中說「能改就改，不能改就這樣吧，大家看得懂點了菜，菜單的作用就達到了呀。」，老闆娘頗有種「誰說設計師沒文化的？明明是我沒有文化好不好？」的巾幗霸氣。本來我和她「什麼愁？什麼怨？」都沒有，我甚至還說了菜色看照片很誘人，但她的最後一句，讓我擔心她的菜莫不會「能燒好就燒好，不能燒好就這麼吧，大家吃飽了肚皮，食物的作用就達到了呀。」 看看好年冬的菜單，「乾麵」沒有寫成「幹面」，「鹹」不是「咸」，「薑」不是「姜」，除了一個「焿」字用了「羹」，那也怪不得店家，因為「焿」的本字反而正是「羹」，根據《教育部重編國語辭典修訂本》說：焿，常見的台灣民俗食品，一種需經勾芡、加料的濃稠羮湯。作法雖似傳統的羮，但在「魷魚焿」、「肉焿」上多用此字。 好吧，我就先點個焿吃，我要吃肉焿，我要吃魷魚焿，我還是吃混合焿吧。 客人已經站起身走了，桌子還沒收拾乾淨，我繼續「把玩」菜單，哇，「刈包」，又一個寫對的字；哇，全酒腰花；哇，腰肝湯；哇，大腸面線；哇，三杯小卷；哇，麻辣腸旺臭豆腐；哇，全是我愛吃的。 落座，繼續看菜單，心想要是今天吃得好，下回帶一幫子人來吃。才想著「一幫子」，低頭看到了桌上的餐紙，是位律師的廣告，赫然看到了「竹聯幫」與「華青幫」的字樣，說是這位律師年輕時加入過。我不懂這個，只是好奇一個人可以加入二個幫的嗎？這可比有些組織好多的，有些組織加入了是不能退出的，至少是不能「公開」退出的。 最後，我點了「白切生腸」和「混合羹」，一個人嘛，也吃不了多少。 先上的是白切生腸，挺大的一個長盆，雖然被醬油膏占去了一點位子，但是對於6.95美元一份的小品來說，量不算少了。要知道，在美國要肉要雞不稀奇，但是腸肝肚腰這類要花心思清理調弄的，成品賣得反而要比肉比雞貴。 說是「白切」，這生腸可真是白啊！完全可用「羊脂白玉般」來形容了。圓圓彎彎的一截截，很是可愛。挾一條，就著薑絲，蘸一點醬油膏，吃口很Q，「Q」是台灣話，很有彈性的意思。 混合焿上來了，果然就是肉焿和魷魚焿，除了幾絲筍絲和香菇絲之外，只有一把香菜了。芡勾得相當到位，透明，混懸但又不稠，非常好，比那些胡亂著膩的酸辣湯好過不知多少了。 （洛杉機市內Mandarin Deli Restaurant的酸辣湯） （Arcadia鼎泰豐的酸辣湯） 香菜之下，是一勺調料，人家秘制的，我也不去問，把焿搗勻，舀一口嘗嘗。鮮香熱辣，辣是胡椒粉的辣，隱隱約約，很是到位。肉焿中規中矩，魷魚羹是干魷魚外裹上魚漿做的，肉焿和魷魚羹外都裹了太白粉，吃口爽滑，要表揚。 再吃了一截生腸，很是Q彈。然而，生腸的口感應該是「Q彈」的嗎？生腸，即母豬的輸卵管，它既不該是雪白的，也不該是「Q彈」的啊？生腸，應該是「脆彈」的，而且應該是淡黃或淡粉色的啊？這種生腸，是一種煮過再泡發的生腸，用藥水浸泡到雪白為止，我猜可能是先用福馬林再用雙氧水泡出來的，這玩意，要是在港台給人吃，恐怕是要挨打的。 （綱友自製的生腸，版權歸原作者） 好在生腸並沒有多少，看上去大大的一盤，下面還墊著捲心菜呢，雖然Q彈的口感也不錯，但總覺得自己是吃了樣假東西似的。 吃焿有個訣竅，要一碗滾燙的白飯，外加1.75美元。把飯倒在焿中，不要拌得很勻，要有點沾到有點沒沾到的樣子，光舀飯吃，那樣飯的口感會變得絕佳，大家以後可以試試。 總的來說，這家店不錯，光從焿的芡來看，是家有基本功的店，希望他們能夠把好原料關，不到位的食材不做，寧可少幾道菜的。寫到這裡，我不禁又想起那位老闆娘來，其實不痛不癢來一句「謝謝指正，以後改用簡體字」不就行了？也省得引出個從未聲明與我絕交的老朋友來駡我神經病了。 店名：Cafe 101 中文店名：好年冬 地址：2763 S Diamond Bar Blvd, Diamond Bar, CA 91765 http://www.101cafetaipei.com/ read more

Food is a 4 or 3.5, service is a 2 at best. I found my dish pretty tasty, but not spicy enough even though I tried to get across that I wanted super hot. There's a major language barrier here, almost no ability to communicate in English. Service is a bit weird, where we didn't get our drinks until a bit after the meal had arrived, and the tea was super sugary though I asked for unsweetened. Overall, I just wouldn't go back. We ordered stinky tofu (no taste, no stink, no crunch), oyster egg omelet (only 2 oyster on it, no taste), steamed dumpling (no taste, very thick and gooey skin), and pork chop rice (okay). Not once did anyone come by to check on us and there was a sign to get 5%off if you order online (which we did) that they would not honor. Not recommended for sure. read more

Years ago when they had a location in Irvine, my family would go every week, so much so the waitresses would know our order. Ten years later, we realized that there's still a location in Diamond Bar!!!! We always get the ketchup fried rice w/ egg, fried pork chop rice, pork potage rice noodles, stir-fried rice noodles, rice cake, stinky tofu, and sliced goose meat. The lady owner is super sweet, friendly and open to suggestions. I suggested to her to post the lunch menu special on the window so passerby can view it. For example, I walked by their shop a few times and didn't enter cuz I didn't know what their menu was like until there I saw one English signage that caught my eye: Lunch specials $8.95 includes drink and soup. Afterwards, I walked in and saw 1 lunch special menu lying around. I ordered three items and it was quick for them to prep. All nicely packed in a box. I loved the broccoli in the chicken leg rice. It had a nice green color and cooked perfectly. (I don't like overcooked greens.) I also ordered beef noodles and oyster and intestine noodles. Did you know this place is called Hao Nian Dong in Chinese (aka Good Time Café or Nice Time Café in English)? I have been to several Hao Nian Dongs during my childhood and usually the English version is the Good Time or Nice Time variant. I didn't even associate 101 Cafe with it until my friend pointed it out when I was perusing the menu. They have a pretty extensive menu of noodles and potage and rice. The first thing that caught my eye was what I decided to order: sausage rice ($7.99). I am a sucker for Chinese (and Taiwanese) sausage so I had eyes for only that dish. It came out pretty quickly after I placed my order. And it was delicious. The large plate had a bed of steamed rice, with slices of sausage, some broccoli, a piece of beancurd tofu, a hard boiled tea egg, and some ground meat on top of the rice. Nowadays, I'm usually able to finish only half of my meal, but not the sausage rice. I had to stop myself from dusting off the last 5 remaining pieces of sausage and save some rice and the tofu to go with it. It definitely helps to order and communicate with the servers here in Mandarin. Otherwise, just double check when you order and ask for things like iced water. I don't recall a minimum for credit cards, though my order was over $7. They also have a buy one get one free deal for boba milk tea so I am thinking of adding that to my order of sausage rice next time! read more
