After we bought lunch, the owners angrily threw my mom's receipt in the garbage after she lysoled her credit card because "I guess it's contaminated with Covid anyway!" That receipt was rightfully hers - what an angry troll. The staff there are terrified of him and sheepishly admitted yes, apologies, that is in fact the owner. My dad politely asked a staff member whether there was wifi (plenty of coffee and cafe-style places do for customers) and the owner pretty much screamed across the store, "No! I'm so done with the poor attitude here! They also no longer do the 2.25 breakfast sandwich, it's now 3.00 and only do it 4 days a week. OK so this is our third and last visit Java Joes Bagels. So being new to the area after having moved here from New York where they make real bagels. So we have been looking for a place that sells as close to possible to New York bagels as we can find so our first time here was a little confusing I mean who's ever heard of self-serve bagels just a thought of it alone is kind of disgusting bagels out in the open for every type of disease child to sneeze on cough on I mean who knows who's been in here. So not knowing the order of things I walk up to the cashier to place my order while the cashier happens to be the owner of the store so you would think that being a new customer they might take a little extra gratitude and have the owner show you what you should do instead I'm told go grab your bagel from the bin then come talk to me. So that already put a bad taste in my mouth but I comply grab two everything bagels and one cinnamon raisin bagel go back up to the cashier and ask if I could have these sliced toasted and cream cheese added to the everything bagels and butter to the cinnamon raisin. Now seeing as how it's a self-serve bagel shop you would think that they would allow you to slice toast and your butter or cream cheese yourself but instead you have to hand your bagels over to the workers who than take about 10 minutes just to slice toast and butter your bagels. After having finally waited for 15 minutes to get the bagels back then wait in line to be checked out by the cashier I hand the cashier over the money my total came to $4.97 I handed the cashier a $10 bill and she gave me back $5.03 however I mistakenly thought I had handed her a 20 at this point she snaps at me saying I haven't even put the $10 in the till yet you can see you only gave me a $10 bill and even if I had I have cameras that we can go look at if you're unsure I mean wow so I was my mistake I owned up to it and said I apologize she didn't say anything to me and walked away. As this was a weekday morning and it was a little crowded I chalked it up to just being busy and maybe she was just having a bad day. Now the bagels were not that bad "let me rephrase that the bagel buns where not that bad as they don't have any holes in them I don't think you can technically call them bagels but they are a big soft and if you like that in your bagel don't come in expecting to get bagels and you'll be OK. During our second visit we had asked the cashier if they had any potato salad and we were told it's over in the showcase prepackaged as we already looked in the showcase and they were runny and had hair on the containers from other people so we did not want prepackage and we ask they had any fresh potato salad we don't do that here what's in the case is what's in the case and that's it so again this is another day still rude and still discussed what kind of bagel place doesn't have fresh potato salad very weird anyway as before we order our bagels waited 20 minutes for them to be sliced toasted and cream cheese put on them. We ate and moved on with our day. And now comes to strike three you're out we will never come back again so today we go to the bagel store once more we bring in our two children we get six bagels we ask for four of them to be sliced toasted and cream cheese which is the usual I don't think it's that difficult to slice toast to put cream cheese on four bagels well we pay for our order we go to sit outside and wait for our bagels One of the workers brings the bagels out to us but only brings three bagels instead of the four we say I think you forgot a bagel and a worker says well I asked you before if you had four bagels and you didn't reply so I figured it was only the three saying that if we want the fourth one will have to pay for it since we didn't pay for the first time now when I went to the cashier we told him we had six bagels two we were taking home and four they were supposed to slice toast put cream cheese on so our total bill came to $20.43 six bagels two coffees and a water if you think about it that's a lot of money for six bagels two coffees and a water. After which we go to get our coffee and there's a wonderful sign as large as can be that states no free coffee refills you must pay for every single cup really your that cheap to make us pay for every single cup of coffee. Not to mention that today for some reason the bagels just tasted off and weird I'm sorry the bagel buns tasted off and weird so I seen a lot of other reviews of other places that have much better bagels so we will continue on our search to find the bagel shop in New Jersey that will suit our breakfast needs. We will not return to Java Joe's bagel shop and yes we do see your big sign that says the best of Roxberry 2010. If you're the best Roxberry has to offer that's not saying very much. read more

I like the idea of a coffee place and a bagel place all in one. The problem is, they only got the bagel part right. They have good bagels, lot of choices. Better than a lot of places. What they don't have is, real coffee choices, no espresso. You can't use the word java in your name and have run of the mill coffee and run of the mill coffee choices like any other convenience store. They totally missed the mark on this one. Service is also not their strength. They seem to have more people than they need, lots of people behind the counter. The problem, they are not very friendly and not very fast. Also, look at the door when you go in and check out how it looks like it's never been washed. This is a fantastic bagel place that I highly recommend to anyone in the area. The bagels are better than most we've had, and you can pick your own before you place the order which is a plus for the picky ones. Our bagel sandwiches came out delicious, with lots of egg and Taylor ham. We also ordered a specialty iced coffee that tastes wonderful. The flavored coffees have lots of flavor to them. You cannot say New Jersey without saying bagel, bagel, bagel. So needless to say to get a good review on a bagel place you need a really good bagel among other things. The menu is in chalk and multi colored at that, the staff is mostly family but very close knit and the bagels are soft and warm and ohhhhhh so yummy. Freaking fantastic Bagel Shop. I used to live in the area, now I live in Morristown, and every chance I can find I hop over to this wonderful family owned shop. The owners as well as the workers have been there for as long as I can remember, they know my name and often my order and are always quick to point out new additions that I should try. It is very clear that they take a lot of pride in this place. So for those reviewers out there that thought they were "rude", you're wrong it called pride. Also, you're in Jersey now. Grow some balls. The bagels are damn delicious; and as someone who's had the misfortune to try anything else in the area, it don't get better than Java Joes. I would HIGHLY suggest you try their egg or blueberry bagel, you're day gets exponentially better with every buttery, soft and chewy bite. Coffee is also wonderful (no refills tho) During the colder months they will have soup. STOP WHATEVER YOU ARE DOING AND GET YOURSELF SOME SOUP. DO IT. I must say I do enjoy there bagels but I will never return do to the customer service. Normally I enjoy coming here for the fact you can choose your perfect bagel but due to the corona virus this feature is on old which is more than understandable. I asked the gentleman helping which bagels had come out last because I like the bagels when they are still warm and fresh. The women ran out from the kitchen and absolutely yelled at me for insulting her that she would serve not fresh bagels. I called Java Joe's to place a takeout order for a bagel with cream cheese. When I picked up my order, I was RUDELY told that I could no longer call them to make a pick up order for a bagel. Apparently, I couldn't inconvenience the two workers to drop everything they're doing and pick up the phone for such a small order. Perhaps you shouldn't be running a business if it's that impossible to answer a phone? Perhaps you should have more than two workers? Perhaps you should adapt to a changing world and think of alternatives like an online ordering system that will make it convenient for yourselves and the customer so you aren't wasting 10 precious seconds of your time to answer a phone? If there was even an ounce of sincerity in her voice, I would've understood. But I was astounded how ill-mannered and impolite she was. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I always went there out of convenience because it was on the route to work, but now I will happily go miles out of my way to be accommodated with better service and honestly better bagels. I've been coming to this bagel shop with my family for years, and their bagels are good, but I don't recommend. Honestly, they are disorganized, the employees need more training (without a doubt you won't get what you ask for - like "light cream cheese" or "hot sauce on the side"), and the older gentleman (the owner - usually at the cash register) is just plain rude. I've given him the benefit of the doubt before, but he is regularly rude. ALSO, with COVID going on, most places don't accept cash (for good reasons), and the guy at the cash register gave us attitude for using a card - again, he's just rude. Very disappointed with the customer service at this established. It was our first time going and we had such a horrible experience. The two older individuals one a women with blond hair and an older guy and a few teens. We were inquiring about items on their menu since there is a food allergy and we need to be careful, when inquiring they sounded annoyed to answer our questions. We went to the register to place an order and the older guy stated if your ready to order you have to go down to the other side of counter to order, saying it in such a way as if we where inconvenience and a bothersome. We made our way to the appropriate area to place our order the older women with blond hair rudely stated, " are you ready to order you have to order here " . she expressed it nastily as she turned her backs to us walking away. After our exchange we decided not to order anything and take our business else where and have no plans on returning. The sad part was it was slow, it wasn't busy or a line where they had to run around and tend to anyone. The older guy was leaning against register doing nothing, there where 3-4 teens behind the counter just talking not doing much and the older women wrapping the tuna salad with Saran Wrap, it wouldn't have hurt to take a moment to provide a little customer service, I do believe the gentlemen behind me seen the exchange and decided to leave as well. I hate using yelp for negative reviews but my experience with Java Joes really bothered me. This was our first time trying this bagel spot. My office rotates buying breakfast for the staff on Saturdays that we work. We figured we would give Java Joes a shot since we live in the same town. I won't be giving them a second shot. The staff is rude and unhelpful for no justified reason. We called in an order, upon pick up we realized that not all the sandwiches paid for were in the bag. Luckily myself and a coworker went through the bag in the parking lot before we left. We went back in and told the girls at the front that one of the items was missing. Right away a man with a beard, whom I wasn't even speaking with, loudly informed us that there was in fact 4 items in our bag. He was standing off to the side and I guess thought shouting that at us was the way to handle it. I then had to empty the bag on the counter in front of the girls (the loud mouth was still not standing there) and then shake the empty bag to in fact show that there was only 3, not 4 items. The bearded man then shook his head and walked into the back. The girls were then informed to come collect the bag from us and take it into the back with him. 30 seconds later, our bag was returned to us with all 4 sandwiches inside. No apologies. No nothing. We were late to work and made to feel like liars or thieves because we had to question where our entire order was. I'll never be back. Not worth it at all. Went here to buy some bagels and it was a horrible experience. First off, their service is atrocious. There were two older employees there, possibly the Owners (a woman and man), and the brown haired woman was so rude. I stood at the counter where it says to order, and she says to me to stand somewhere else? So I moved to where the register is, then she shouts at me and says "why are you over there, you have to come here and order, or you can leave and come back". What a horrible response, but I decided to just place my bagel order and leave. Now, regarding the bagels, I ordered a few Cinnamon Raisin and just those bagels tasted terrible. Poorly made with no flavor. What you will notice is that the bagels are big, but they lack the flavor advertised. I also got a Jalapeno and it was not cooked fully inside; I had to throw most of the bagels away because they were not fully cooked and oddly enough, some were so pale looking that it was now obvious why those had no color because they were not cooked thoroughly. Then I go to the register to pay, now mind you I was the ONLY person there and the guy at the register decided to walk away for a whole 6+ minutes; I decided to time it after a few minutes passed. When he returned, he had the audacity to say "are you finally ready?". What is it with this place, but I do believe that they will inevitably shut down. While I don't appreciate bad customer service, what I despise more is that the products they are selling is even worse. This is a big PASS for me. Rudest owners. Bought 8 bagels and was charged $11+ When we got home we wondered why it was so high for just 8 bagels. We called and asked them how much a bagel is, and they told us 90 cents. We then asked how it could be more than 11 dollars for 8 bagels? They asked us if we had any spreads on them and we said no. They then asked if we had purchased any drinks. We said no. They said, "Well how do we know you aren't lying to us?" And we relpied, "We've been coming here for years. We're not going to lie over $2-3. It's one of my go-to bagel shops even tho it's 25 minutes for my home- but the trip is always worth it.
