Whenever my boyfriend and I walk through Montclair while we are in North Jersey, I always try to look for smaller independent businesses. On my most recent visit, we spotted Java Love and I suggested we stop in. We were instantly in love with the cozy environment and impressed with the size/how much room there is for doing work or enjoying a coffee with a friend. The girl working the counter today was a bit rude to us when we ordered. I went to pay, was using Apple Pay and needed to briefly (literally one second) pull my mask down for facial ID on my IPhone. Within that second, I pulled it right back up. She screamed at me to pull my mask up. I told her that I just needed to show my full face for Apple Pay. She said, " well, you could have turned your head to make me more comfortable." I'm sorry, am I purchasing coffee to make you feel good?! Girl, go get your life and stop picking on people. Keep that bad attitude up, and when the pandemic is over, you're not going to have any more customers because you ran them all off. Oh, and the coffee was terrible! Go to Paper Plane. I love it here! The drinks are so creative (Mariah's The Audre Lorde is a must-have) and I can't wait to try more of the treats they have. And the baristas are all so lovely and cool, the kind of people I'd want to be friends with. I can't see this place "losing customers" any time soon, in fact I'm more than happy to be a regular while I'm attending school nearby. This is my go-to relax, people watch and drink good coffee place. I only go a couple times a month and yet the staff remembers me. They are always welcoming even when there is a rush. They're knowledgeable and often make suggestions. The seasonal specials board is fun and I usually try something from there. The coffee is always excellent and while the shop is small I can usually get a spot by the window, or even the outdoor seating when it's warm. I'm always able to take a moment and savor the coffee and the day. read more

Unimpressed. I went in to have a cold brew. It was watered down, so it was bland in flavor. $4.65 for a subpar cup of coffee. Will try the pour over and purchase beans next time to give them a chance. This review is based, solely, on the coffee, not the service or ambiance. read more

I honestly really love this place. It's so nice and peaceful but still a great hangout place. The only problem I have with it is that it's a bit cramped but that's just my personal opinion since I'm not a fan of smaller spaces. Stopped in on a whim while in town and it was utterly adorable. The staff were super helpful, wanted something a little out of the norm so they showed us their special list for the coming month, each employee comes up with a drink and it's a contest for them for who sells the most. Drinks were inventive and delicious. Fairly priced. Good flavor. No artificial nonsense the cinnamon is CINNAMON not cinnamon syrup. Nice amount of seating. Had a magnificent donut muffin treat with Nutella (it was good even without it) that was so completely scrumptious I would go back just for that! Would absolutely return and even go so far as to say I would drive to Montclair just for a coffee and baked treat from this shop. Nice change from crappy big name coffee. read more

The coffee is hit or miss- the special I got was undrinkable & lukewarm at best-but I've had others that were good. My complaint about this particular location is the service. They make your order, put it on a side shelf & forget about it. There were 3-4 people behind the counter but they couldn't tell me which my order was & in fact I'm pretty sure I got the wrong one. Back when you could sit inside, this was 100% better than the Upper Montclair location, but even with takeout only, I prefer this location because of the baristas--such nice, cool cats. By memory they know my order before I have to say a word. There's a good vibe that feels more college town than NYC suburb. So close to a Starbucks, and yet so pleasantly far from that sort of industrialized option. read more

My boyfriend's favorite coffee shop. The coffee here is always perfect. The milk even when soy is creamy. No matter the time of day or who is behind the counter you get the same perfect coffee. Plenty of plugs for your computer and there is wifi. Great place to study, be alone and drink a great cup of coffee. read more

Best coffee in town. The staff is always friendly and helpful and I love getting my 1 free for every 10 purchased because I drink a LOT of coffee! The atmosphere is great too, love the adirondack chairs out front to kick back and relax (the one in Upper Montclair on Bellevue is great to hang out at also. To be honest, I was surprised they opened up on the corner opposite of the big box fast food coffee place and thought wow that is brave. Now I get why they were so fearless because Starbucks can't even touch their coffee, service or atmosphere. If I could give them 10 stars I would. Just stopped in today to get an iced coffee. Got an iced Americano and it was great. Also loved the vibe in the place a lot of people sitting down doing work on their laptops. I was in at around 10am and all the chairs were already taken so must be the spot people in town head to do work. Would much rather shop local here than across the street at the huge Starbucks. A great spot for coffee on Church Street in downtown Montclair. Space available for doing work and reading-far more than Starbucks across the street. Seats available outside as well. Menu is limited but there muffins are good and there coffee is all fair trade so you can feel good about the product you drink. Your also helping a local business by going to Java Love. read more

Really great addition to Church Street. The coffee is very good, and a very interesting, ever-changing list of custom drinks created by the staff. They also sell these odd and delicious baked goods called monuts, that are a cross between a muffin and a donut. Quite tasty! My wife loves their iced lattes! read more
