My visit to Java Nation was a random detour after an appointment in the area. I searched for food near by and was drawn in by their overall site and presentation. The menu was extensive and detailed. Sooo many options to choose from in terms of food and drinks. The atmosphere felt pretty all purpose, which I can't really say generally about most. People working & studying, yet they also have a fully loaded bar perfect for happy hour. I ordered the steak and eggs $22 and the Holy Apple cocktail $12. The drink was made beautifully. My food was alright. I asked my steak be well done but it was more on the medium side. I also felt all portions on my plate could of been more seasoned. It lacked a bit of flavor despite how good it looked. I'd return for drinks and possibly try another menu item. Would recommend checking them out if you're in the area. I've been to the Java Nation in Kensington many times, but hadn't realized that they opened a location on a Rockville Pike. It is spacious, bright, and full of delicious pastries. It also has plenty of outdoor seating and was a great place to spend a nice afternoon with friends. I had the lemon crunch croissant, which was amazing - I would totally get that again. My friend had the Brie, fig jam, and walnut croissant, which sounded super good - I might have to try that next time. Review for the North Bethesda location: The café is alright. It has a decent ambience and menu. Service is good. Parking is tight. Not much space especially on weekends and Friday nights. The menu us slightly overpriced. They do have happy hour which is nice since there are not many places to go to for happy hour in this part of town. read more

Nice bustling spot to grab coffee and breakfast. Came on a Thursday morning (Thanksgiving) and it was super cozy for a Fall morning. There's plenty of seating outside and it's closed off so it doesn't feel too cold. There's also outdoor heaters for the areas that are not covered. Our coffee came out super quick. I went on a Saturday night because they had a band . They have this crazy system of keeping the band outside in an enclosed tent with an opening the restaurant. Sure you can hear the band but is freezing ! Everyone had to wear winter coat in restaurant . The only thing on menu that interested me was a hamburger . At the price point of $15 for hamburger and $3 for French fries I was expecting a gourmet burger . Instead it was honestly the size of the value menu whopper that was under cooked . So I went to Java Nation for the first time. First the pros....nice atmosphere and comfortable environment. Happy hour selection and prices looks decent. I went there for breakfast and really enjoyed the coffee. These are the reasons why I gave this review two stars. Now, for the rest of my experience. For starters, when we ordered food and reviewed the receipt, we noticed that we were overcharged for an item. When we addressed it with the staff, we were told that the menu prices were wrong and what was rung up in the computer was the correct price. Wait!?!?!? What?!?! Buyer be warned...check your receipt. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other discrepancies in their computers. I understand that errors occur but telling me that I should pay more than what is advertised is totally unacceptable. She did refund the difference after I politely explained that it is bad for business to try and justify ALL of their menus advertising the wrong price. As for the food, it left a lot to be desired. I ordered a salmon Benedict. My poached egg was totally overcooked and their was a dollop of Hollandaise sauce the same size as the egg. I've never seen semi solid Hollandaise but what do I know. My boyfriend ordered a turkey club that is described as layers of turkey, bacon...the sandwich had two slices of deli turkey meat and a bit of bacon. I hardly describe that as layers. I really want to like this place and maybe I'd be willing to try dinner or happy hour but I'm so turned off by how the staff initially handled the price discrepancies that I won't be returning. Service, 3/5: The service was pretty good. The food came out pretty quick, didn't take that long. All the workers were also wearing masks and the one's making our drinks were wearing gloves. Aesthetic/Atmosphere, 4/5: It's a cute place. Both indoor and outdoor seating was nice. Indoor seating had signs where people could sit and were spaced out well. Outdoor had the tables spread out and also had heaters were the cold weather. Food/Drink, 2/5: I think I was most disappointed with the food. I got the avocado toast and Chai Latte. The avocado toast was alright, but personally, there was a bit too much-pickled onion on it. The Chai Latte was delicious. Pricing, 3/5: I thought it was a bit overpriced, but overall it wasn't so bad. Overall Experience, 3/5: I would come back here for the drinks, but for the food, I'm not sure. So I'm driving down Rockville Pike on my way to work a little after 8am in dire need of a cup of coffee - I've driven past Java Nation many times, so I thought why not give it a try? I go inside and it's pretty empty, just two other patrons besides myself. I ask for a small cup of coffee to go, pay for my cup, and figure it should only take a minute to get my coffee, get out, and be back on my way to work. Unfortunately they were completely out of hot coffee - they had 3 huge canisters behind the counter and apparently all were empty. I see absolutely no excuse for this - coffee is literally in the name of your business, it's what you do. Perhaps when one canister is running low, you start brewing the next one? Clearly it wasn't busy so perhaps the employees were just inattentive, but if Panera can always have a hot canister ready with the amount of business they do, there's no excuse for an upscale establishment like this to run out. I wasn't happy about having to wait the time for them to brew new coffee, but whatever, I was hoping the coffee would be worth the wait. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. The coffee was extremely bitter/acidic and tasted burnt. I took 3 sips and threw out the rest when I got to work. Only reason I'm giving this 2 stars is because the customer service was adequate and the interior was very clean/nice. I can't comment on the food, but would definitely not come back here for coffee. read more

I was a huge fan of Java Nation - I'm talking following them on all their social media, and anxiously awaiting the opening of this place as I live right down the street. I was so disappointed when I went in to the new location on the first day. No one greeted us. We waited at the counter, with the cashier already there but not speaking, until I spoke up so we could start ordering. What we ordered (salad and panini with drinks) was over $30 including the tip, and the food took nearly 30 minutes. It was only when we brought this to the staff's attention that they brought it out. The panini was cold, as if they'd just forgotten about it. They did not apologize for any of this. What's more is I sent an email to Java Nation about my disappointment in the experience. I gave it a week. And they didn't even respond. I am really saddened by this but unfortunately I will not be giving them any business again. read more

I wanted to love this place, but I only live parts of it. It'S a cool, cozy space with coffee, breakfast items, and what looked like a bar that might serve alcohol? We stopped in after the gym looking for coffee so that's all we ordered. My boyfriend got a mocha and I got a caramel macchiato. My drink is not on the menu but an espresso macchiato is so I figured they could add caramel. When I asked, I was given a confident "yes we can do that". The staff are friendly and the space is awesome but the three stars is for the coffee. I might be confused but I thought a macchiato poured the shots on top. When I got my drink, it looked like the milk went in last. I also didn't taste much caramel. It seemed like they gave me an espresso with soy milk as I expected. The result was a sour, acidic, and unpleasant coffee drink. I tasted the mocha hoping it would taste better but it tasted watered down and not very chocolatey. Well apportioned and nice, laid back atmosphere. High quality decor and they even have a little bar/coffee bar? Not sure which it is since I was there at like 7AM and was the only one there.
