If you're looking for the perfect local coffee spot, look no further. Java Surf is truly the end-all-be-all of local coffee culture in VA Beach. Swung in with 3 buddies early on a Saturday morning after a trail run at First Landing. Not crowded at all, promptly seated, and super friendly/personable staff. We were stoked to learn the coffee was "serve yourself," so for about $2 that's TOUGH to beat for organic roasts (pretty sure they're 3rd Party Certified coffees, too...). Java Surf seems to take the eco-responsibility thing seriously, and while that's not my primary consumer driver, it's a nice touch. No disposable cups; they have various different eclectic mugs for use in the shop. Once you're ready to roll, you can get a disposable roadie cup. SERIOUS value... The food was awesome. Like, tough to beat. I enjoy local eateries, and for the wraps/sandwiches, no other place comes close. I can't remember the exact name, but I got a wrap with pineapple and a sriracha mayo egg wrap that was the perfect blend of fresh, sweet, and spicy. There were many choices that looked delicious, and without question I'll be back for more samplings off their menu. Do yourself a favor and stop going to whatever national chain you're visiting or gas station coffee bar you frequent. Java Surf is the new jam. read more

This is for my 'frank' bagel. Frankly, it's a bit shite. The cream cheese is barely spread on at all, there are by my count 4 pieces of onion on here, but really it's less than three because those other two are tiny. There are 4 capers on it. $10 - bit of a rip off. DO NOT COME HERE. read more

Though it has been a while, since they had first opened their new location as a matter of fact, as a returning customer I leave them using quite a strategic mathematical equation with these 5 stars.. lol.. Starting with my peanut butter latte. It I'm sad to say was not nearly as delicious as it had been on my first visit there but still, above average. :-( NOW my lunch however... I must say yet again was untouchable by far. I keep forgetting the name its a chicken pesto sandwich thing that is so delicious that I not only ate the half that was supposed to be lunch but I completely seemed to transform into fat kid status and devoured what I was saving for my dinner.. I did this driving in my car on the way home. Ummm. Soooo good. Oh an to top off my visit I mentioned I was a returning customer right. Though not since they had originally opened. Their customer service is on point. From there basic staff to the owner they are all extremely kind an attentive, which is Alot more than I can say for other places in the area. I hadn't been there in months and the owner not only recalled who I was but remembered my daughter and asked how she had been. That right there, treating each an every customer whether regular or not like they are important is one of the main things no matter what that can make an establishment shine above the rest. Very good latte. Walked a few blocks from where I was staying to get a decent cup of coffee. This place was one of the only ones open early (0730 riser on vacay!) Got the toasted coconut latte with almond milk. It was a tad pricey but made well and super fast service. Both girls were friendly and welcoming. read more

When traveling I like to patronize local establishments. Driving by I missed this little slice of coffee goodness, my hotel clerk suggested it. Coffee is perfectly roasted and brewed , staff if friendly and accommodating. If you want a good cupp of coffee instead of the swill at the chain convenient stores without the cost of Starbucks. Excellent cold brew and food! I highly recommend. Two of us got there at about 10:30am on a Saturday and waited 20-25 minutes to be seated. The only downside is it's a small restaurant and kind of packed inside. But the food and coffee was worth the wait. 10/10 recommend. Good food and hipster. As far as coffee shops go, this one is pretty average. The coffee is a little expensive for what you get. I got an iced coffee and they handed me a cup with ice and syrup and let me do the rest (the coffee is in a dispenser which is a little different but kind of cool). The taste of the coffee was ok, I've tasted better but I've always tasted way worse. For the price it wasn't that impressive. Overall I'd say this coffee shop is pretty good; could have definitely been better, though. On the bright side, the baristas were pretty friendly!! I don't regret coming here, but I don't know if I would come back. read more

Wow!!! This is my new FAVORITE breakfast place!!!! My friend wanted to meet here ~ which I had never been and I am an instant fan. The staff is great, decor is great, the restaurant is nice & clean and the food is super good! I ordered the Hawaii Melt and my hubby ordered the Baltic Melt ~ they are so good & tasty. Also, they have Costa Rica coffee that is amazing and if you don't like one ~ they had another like Sumatra to try; self serve with the half & half & sugars with refills. I can't wait to try everything on their menu. They have a cute little area outside to sit and watch traffic roll by if you like, it's along a cute little side patio area in the front. Awesome people, food, and the best espresso on the beach. The espresso bean is smooth and low bitterness, and the barista's are properly trained. They focus on local, but not just the food, as just about everything in the place from their coffee roasting vendor to their wall art is local. Big supporters of ViBe Creative District. If you're gluten free, paleo, or another limited diet, they will modify without an upcharge. The gluten free sandwich bread is great. All the breakfast bowls are also offered as in a spinach bowl, which is what I always get and love. The smoothie is also fantastic. Fast wifi, good music, lots of sunlight, and super friendly staff. You'll usually see the owner Dwayne hanging out with customers and having fun. read more

I visited this restaurant twice while in Virginia Beach. The first visit went well and I was impressed with the level of service and attempts to maintain a safe and clean environment given the pandemic. This all fell in line with the recommendations from Virginia department of health. The next day, Labor Day, I made a reservation to visit. The restaurant seemed 100% different from the previous visit. Multiple customers did not have masks on at any point during their visit, I was seated in such close proximity to a party that I would have touched them by moving my chair... clearly 2 feet between us if that. Most shockingly, I looked at the food counter area and noticed that the 2 men preparing the food did NOT have on masks... not even sure now if they had on gloves. I attempted to bring this to the manager's attention- he was making coffee type drinks, only to be told that he was too busy to listen and wait for the waitress. He never listened to my concern. I then told the waitress who was actually very nice and considerate of the concern. She apologized though this was not at all her fault and should have been handled or heard by management. My initial impression warranted 5 stars but the second visit was a complete let down and disaster. I understand being busy on Labor Day but this should warrant increase precautions given the amount of people visiting their restaurant read more

Awesome food at a marginally more expensive price. The portions are great, as is the staff, the speed of ordering, and the atmosphere. Its an all around great place to hang near the beach, grab a sandwich or a cup of coffee and just chill. The only drawback is the price. I would like to have the experience again without feeling like I just dropped $50 on a couple sandwiches with chips and drinks. With that being said however I do plan to return, so don't allow the price to discourage you from trying this awesome dive. read more

Ordered the 'Create Your Own Breakfast Sandwich' menu item via Postmates early on a Wednesday morning. It arrived quickly and was fabulous. My only regret is I forgot to take a photo. Everything Bagel was great. The eggs were 'real eggs,' as in you could tell some one cracked and scrambled real eggs before putting them on the sandwich -- not the processed fake eggs you sometimes receive at an Einstein's Bagels. Saw this place while walking around and stopped in for breakfast. Our cappuccinos were delicious, and so were our bagel sandwiches. My girlfriend got the lox sandwich and I got a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel. The staff was also very friendly and our espresso and breakfast came out quickly. It was, however, a bit pricey, but I think it was worth it. If you like great coffee and breakfast, definitely come here. read more

I really enjoyed this place. The food was great; coffee was fantastic. My son knocked over my coffee, and they cleaned it up promptly and replaced it for free. I did not ask for them to replace it for free, in fact I tried paying, but they understood that little kids can be hard to manage at a restaurant and replaced it anyways. If you are looking for a place with amazing food, great service, chill atmosphere and ,a cool owner this is the place. I had the cinnafruit oats with honey. I know this sounds simple but it was delicious and healthy. I also tried the salted caramel latte, rich in flavor , perfect froth and esthetically pleasing. My daughter had the Funky Munky wrap. Even though it seems small it is packed with flavor and with wonderful fruit and Nutella she was more then full. Everything is perfectly priced for any pocket book and you'll be more than happy you stopped at this quaint hipster expresso bar.. The only thing I wish is that one would open in Laguna Beach, CA... Overall disappointed with the service.. our waitress (blue eyes, tanned skin, dark hair) was very rude and seemed to catch an attitude when i kindly asked if i can have less ice in my OJ (keep in mind, our drinks were 3/4 ice) when she returned with my OJ after accommodating me, she basically slammed my drink on the table. Food was good, but it was ALL packaged in plastic take out containers brought to your table in plastic bags...even if you ate in the restaurant. The only thing not encased in plastic that I saw were the cups of coffee which were served in paper cups. In this day and age of too much waste in our landfills, this was way over the top. I will never go back to this establishment on this principle alone no matter how good the food is. There is always another restaurant to eat at...ones that serve their food on regular dishware. read more
