ashamed i haven't made my way to this cute little cafe so perfectly nudged in ODU. upon arrival , parking is fairly easy once you know where the location is. the calmness of the environment welcomed many students and possibly remote workers as there was plenty of space to utilize for a mini work station. i ordered: Gingerbread Matcha - i appreciated knowing the staff let me ask what kind of matcha was being used and how it was being prepared. maybe that's a little crazy of me, but i've had an appreciation before the hype and mixing it directly with milk wasn't going to cut it for me. would absolutely be back and order another seasonal matcha!! read more

Cute coffeeshop in the heart of ODU. I was in the area during my lunch break and decided to give a new coffee shop a try, and Yelp led me to this place. When I walked in, I was greeted right away. When I approached the counter to order, I did what I normally do when trying a new place, I asked the employees what they recommended, and they were happy to share their favorite drinks choices with me. I decided to try the Apple Jack Chai, which was one of the drink specials. Their drink sizes to me seem smaller than the average coffee shop, but I am ok with that because I feel like our portion sizes are crazy anyway, lol. When I received my drink, I loved that they gave it to me with the top off so I could see what I was getting. I took one sip, and I was like, "This is good," Then I took another sip, and I said "wow this is really good." It wasn't overly sweet, and all the flavors that you love in a chai (cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc) were all perfectly balanced and played very well with the apple flavor. As I was driving back to work, I only had one regret.....I honestly wished I ordered a medium, it was that good. Been going to this place throughout my college career. Yummy food and great lattes and lemonades! The people there are really nice and will help you decide your drink. Very cozy cafe to study or just hang out! I will say since this is a coffee house and the coffee is fresh, its really strong. If you don't like the strong coffee taste decaf is the way. read more

I used to come here when I was a student at ODU back from 2008-2011. It has since closed down and reopened with new ownership. It's a new vibe, and not totally the same as the old Borjo, but still a place I would love to come sit & chill at regularly. My girlfriend and I went to ODU for some homecoming festivities, so we started our day off here. The service was great, but incredibly slow. This cute little cafe is located right on ODU's campus and had the perfect ambiance. They play lo-fi instrumental music perfect for a study date or if you just need to relax. The service was speedy quick and the cashier was super attentive to any questions I had. I ended up opting for the maple brown sugar latte which is one of their drink specials right now. The latte was smooth, rich and just the perfect amount of sweetness. An overall balanced cup of joe that I would definitely repurchase. They offer a 10% student discount which was a plus for me :) Also offered are pastries and breakfast dishes which I will definitely have to come back to try. As a college student, I prefer to spend my money at a small business that serves quality drinks and food. The service is great, online ordering works out well, and everything comes out very quickly. It's a great place to sit and study or read or chat with others. As someone who's been to many cafes that have an uncomfortable vibe, I can confidently recommend this cafe. For those who like details: it can be a bit warm inside, but they have outside seating. You should wait near the counter for your drink, but if you order food they will bring it to you :) The bathrooms are nice and single person. I love a good signboard outside a business with a witty punch line or drawing to invite you in. Borjo's 'brain' board had me sold; time to "install java"... okay okay, nerdy jokes over, promise. The atmosphere was calm and collected; counters were kept clean and staff moved around consistently to stay on top of any unused coffee paraphernalia from leavers to ensure there were clean spots for newcomers. You had all the stereotypical customers and then some, all in perfect harmony under one roof; the stressed out students tapping furiously at their MacBooks, the regulars, the hipsters, the time killers, the coffee instagrammers, the 'let's have a quick meeting over coffee' business peeps, and then of course the newcomers. Enter Cici; yours truly. The menu is clearly displayed so that if you're a newcomer, you can see what you want before you get to the counter and freeze or get stage fright and order the wrong thing. To the left of the coffee bar is an alcohol bar where they can serve cocktails and well, alcohol. Duh. Then there's the fridge and "bake space" where you can stare into each items soul and wait for it to call your name so you know which one to choose... ahem... it had yummy baked goods on display. I had my heart set on one of the muffins - until I saw a fly sitting on the last croissant. Ew. It happens - it's not like it lived in there and paid rent, it obviously didn't belong there, but it put me off quite quickly. Nothing sweet for me today from here. Another day, for sure. I had a green tea latte (aka matcha latte) and ordered the husband a black coffee. I was served by a lovely young lady, very sweet and chipper; to be honest, all the staff behind the counter were smiling, had great attitudes and made effort with every customer. I had some pretty good banter with the guy, I salute you bro - stay smiling :) The restroom (there's individual ones for the lassies and for the lads, couldn't check the bro room for obvious reasons lol) is spotless; regularly checked by staff and stocked up so you don't, well, get caught with your pants down! All in all, I'd give this place 4 stars going on 5, but that's only because of the trapped fly in the 'bakespace' (so sorry to mark down for it) but I know I will come back in the future to edit my review after I try out a couple of events here and a cocktail or two. read more

Had about 45 minutes to kill before a movie so I stopped in for a quick pick me up. My date ordered a chocolate milk shake with white chocolate. I ordered a hot red-eye--coffee espresso concoction. The coffee was smooth and the espresso definitely mild. The shake was good and the whipped cream was a nice compliment but not over bearing. I haven't been here in over a year, and the last time I was here was for a job interview that I didn't get (sad I know, but that's life). I didn't really get to try much of the menu back then and I haven't had the opportunity to come back since. First, I'm glad I came after 5pm this time because I was able to find parking right in front of the shop (luckily because it got full by the time I left) so there's the /little/ window of opportunity for you to find front row parking. Second, their Mocha Java milkshake is SO THICK and yet SO GOOD that you really shouldn't drink it on a full stomach. Don't do that or you'll feel full really fast. It's so good and I'll definitely have to try their other milkshakes and iced drinks on the menu. Third, the baristas are so sweet and helpful and fun to talk with. They know how to do their jobs, and are so professional and make you feel like you want to come back. I appreciate that and that's one of the main factors in me frequenting a business. So major kudos for that. The space is big enough that you can accommodate a group meeting like there was today, and yet still cozy enough that you don't feel like you're being drowned out in the din of noise. I like that they are open until 7pm, and not that far from my work, so the next time I want to get some work done in between commuting home, I'll definitely make my way down there for some work and drinks. I also had the breakfast burrito and added bacon to it. The burrito was quite good, but there was a little more black beans and red pepper than I was expecting. Although I added bacon, I couldn't taste that it was there until after several bites. I enjoyed that the tomato-basil tortilla was toasted. Customer service was warm and friendly, with the cashier answering all my menu questions without hesitation. My iced mocha was ready in minutes with my breakfast burrito following shortly after. There's a good amount of sitting inside, with a mix of high tops, regular tables, and communal tables. Borjo is an awesome local coffeehouse located right at the heart of my alma mater, ODU. Admittedly, when I was a student here I only came here a couple of times. The first time I just came for a spoken word poetry night and didn't eat anything. The second time was a quick pop in and out but the coffee and pastry (cranberry muffin) I got was pretty good. At the end of this past summer I was at a two week job training hosted at ODU, and they gave us meal cards to use at select places on campus. Borjo was the best option compared to all chain fast food, so I consistently came here for lunch for two weeks straight. I must say that trying so much off of their menu got me hooked on this place. So far I haven't gotten a single thing from here that I haven't liked. I must recommend "The Monarch Way", the Thai chicken salad, and any of their fresh squeezed juices. The Texas wrap and chicken salad wrap were also delicious. The service here is always polite and with a smile. I have never had a bad experience with any of the staff members at Borjo. They are so wonderful and amazing and most of them know my order as soon as I was in (I'm a regular that gets the same thing most of the time). The staff experience coupled with the atmosphere and the location make this one of the best coffee spots for college students/staff and families alike. They have an outside seating area which is great for warm summer days, and the inside is decorated with local art. They also have books and games to play if you are in the mood. YAY!! I had a favorite coffee house, but found out that they didn't have consistently good food handling practices. That left me in the lurch. After trying several other local shops and failing to be impressed, I ventured out a little further to give Borjo's a try. I'm sooo happy that I did because this place blows away any other coffee shop that I've been to. And, the food is damned good, to boot! I can drink a mocha here and it doesn't have that gritty powdery feel on my tongue. It's perfectly blended with whatever else I've chosen (syrups or Frangelica-yes, booze- or whatever). And a dollop of whipped creme on top. Yes, please and thank you! Add to that friendly *gasp* friendly faces! Yes, at a coffee shop in Norfolk! I know, I can hardly believe it myself! *lol* But, see for yourself. This is the place where that happens, regularly! I can enthusiastically recommend the muffins, especially warmed. And, any mochas or lattes. I haven't had a mediocre one, yet. They've all been great. There's a wrap... I really don't remember what it was called. But, it had red onions and was delicious! They've got huge cookies, yummy as well. Frangelica (hazelnut liquor) added to any drink has been a very nice, natural addition. Better than Bailey's imo. But, to each their own-both are available. I got my typical iced mocha coffee, took a seat and used their free Wi-Fi to get respond to emails. I like the mixed crowd of people there. I ventured down to my hometown last week to attend the fabulous Hampton Roads Elite Event and needed to do some work before playing that evening. I knew that once I got to my dad's house I wouldn't be able to focus my entire concentration on work, so I detoured to Borjo after getting off of 64. All I really needed was a quick bite, Free Wi-Fi and a comfortable spot to post up with my laptop. What I got with Borjo was so much more. First, the food. The breakfast burrito (served all day, btw) is filled with ripe, juicy tomatoes, orange and yellow peppers, onions, cheddar, black beans and egg. I was super impressed by the quailty of the veggies, as I wasn't expecting much. But this was totally what I'd expect from a gourmet sandwich shop. So delicious. And my latte was just the caffeine perk I needed. Next, the setting. I arrived around lunchtime and there were a decent number of people seated both inside and out. But there were still plenty of seats for me (all I need is a 2-top) and the noise-level was fairly low despite the number of patrons. The space is bright, cheerful and very welcoming. And the music - perfect for the setting. A mix between a throw-back (pretty sure I heard some Lisa Loeb in there) and your typical chill coffeehouse jams. Finally, the service. Everyone who worked there was so nice! When my latte was ready one of the girls brought it over to me, same with silverware and my burrito. I'm used to picking up my purchases at the counter (totally cool with me, not complaining), so this was an unexpected surprise. Moral of the story - I'll definitely be back to Borjo when I need a serene space to do some work in Norfolk. read more

Borjo is delightful. Everything that I have tried so far has been a wonderful surprise. Dark roast coffee: good. I drink my coffee black and don't have high expectations wherever I go. It didn't taste metallic or watery and I didn't get a mouthful of coffee grounds, so it was a win for me. Chai latte: I now want one every day. Pumpkin muffin: I had zero hopes for this as it was afternoon and it was sitting in a display case, but it turned out to be pretty good. It was moist with a nice light pumpkin flavor and some icing on top. Powhatan sandwich: Three cheese, avocado, bacon, and tomato on a grilled multigrain bread. This was not on the menu (special - not sure for how long as it's been up there for over a week I think). It was fairly light and really tasty. Brie plate: This is listed on the "small plates," but is a generous amount of food. It came with a large wedge of brie cheese, raspberry preserves, and nice slices of grilled bread. It was very enjoyable. Breakfast panini (add bacon): Perfect ratios of egg, cheese, and bacon. It had really nice flavor and wasn't even a little bit greasy. I have to have napkins for everything and I totally forgot to get one with this sandwich because I didn't need it! The service is excellent and friendly, the music is always good, and the patrons behave themselves. I don't recommend it (or any coffee house, ever) for serious studying, but if you want to look over some work or meet with a friend, this is a good place for it. read more

I love the amount of natural light available, the ample parking near by, the dog treats in a jar, and the fact that it doesn't come off as pretentious or exclusive to the cool kids. Diverse clientele (college students mainly, some medstudents, neighborhood folk of all ages) that are all welcome. They have alot of tables (which Elliots did not) but also some chairs/couches. Also free wifi! If you often enough they remember your order and Rob the owner is often around. Vanilla Italian soda which is surprisingly hard to find, except at Starbucks. The atmosphere is nice and I can image it gets crowded when the college scene is in full force. I love their 21+ menu and you can add alcohol to your coffee drinks, as long as you stay inside the venue and drink them. You also have the option of various cocktails. I had the Monarch Way sandwich and a "blended" Mocha (pictures). The sandwich was made with fresh ingredients and I was under the impression that it would be warm (i.e. melted cheese). But that may have been my assumption. Make sure you hold it correctly as the contents will fall out if you're not careful. My mocha was good, but had way too much ice. When I finished it, about half the cup was filled with chunks. I won't be ordering it again. The staff was very friendly and I felt very well catered to. I'm sure it helped that I was one of a few people there. This location is also a great spot for people watching. It was my first time in the area, so be weary that you have a two hour parking limit if you parking in the near-by parking spots. The sign stated that parking was enforced Monday-Saturday; 8AM-8PM. I come here for the milky way latte, and I'm never disappointed as it reminds me of the days I used to walk to class & be late because I grabbed coffee on the way there. The menu is large, but it seems like you cannot go wrong with what you order. I like the bread used in breakfast sandwiches, and my friends have always raved about their chicken caesar salads. The coffee menu is extensive but delicious. They craft their lattes beautifully every time! My dessert latte is on the sweeter side, but their regular espresso drinks without sugar added are still great. My only issue is that their iced coffees/lattes come with shaved ice. Normally, it's a good thing, but I just struggle to enjoy my caffeine with that finely crushed ice. It's a personal preference/problem, and it doesn't prevent me from ordering here. read more
