I really wanted to understand the hype. I discovered Javier's is a Dallas staple by way of a needlepoint canvas. I figured if this can make it to the needlepoint world, people here must really be about it. I know every city has their staples. I felt the margs weren't strong enough and I ordered the high end one. The app we ordered, fell flat. It was some sort of cheese thing but when it arrived I thought this was some random item sent out from the kitchen to sample, not our actual appetizer. Extremely disappointing. I'll be totally honest, an LA girl didn't know what the hell to do with the butter that accompanied the chips and salas. I love a two choice option so this was nice. A lady needs options but tossing butter in there made me feel like a rookie. Does one attempt to dip their chip in said butter? What if the chip breaks? Do I put a bit of this in the warm salsa to melt? The sheer confusion that arose with this condiment. I just left it alone. I'm never one to leave something such as butter alone but I was completely perplexed. My red fish with veggies was delish!!! My son ordered some sort of goat fajitas, they looked good. I tried a bite of a taco he had fixed up. We both agreed the bartender needs to hit these margs with a heavier hand. A good marg just hits different than these did. I want my tequila to make my hands and face feel slightly numb. I don't want to be a two drink gal. I want one strong drink to do the trick. These do not, they were basically glorified lime juice. Ambiance was great! I'm not certain I'd recommend this spot other than for the simple fact, I think this is one of Dallas' Mexican spot staples. I've been to others and preferred them to this. Expectations were high as Dallas rarely disappoints me but something about it all didn't scream 5 star. Solid 4 (good/service) but the margs are def not up to par. I've also been spoiled by valet that have the text to bring your car around prior to reaching their stand. I love this, because I'll text for the car when paying and it's waiting when I walk out. This place is good but overhyped. Their complimentary chips are served with red salsa, green salsa, and butter -- a pleasant combination. My table shared the Ceviche (marinated white fish and shrimp in lemon juice, seasoned Acapulco style), and I loved how tender it was. For my entree, I ordered the Pollo Ahumado (one-half mesquite smoked chicken, served Mexican style with guacamole, rice, black beans and special hot sauce). The chicken didn't have much flavor or smokiness. Also, it was chewy. I would NOT recommend this item. My friends order the fajitas though, and they enjoyed it. There's construction around the area, but valet parking is easy and available. The restaurant itself is dim and very busy even on a weeknight, so prepare to make reservations in advance. read more

RESTAURANT: Had to put in a reservation for this place a month prior and had high hopes, but I was left feeling underwhelmed. They served a red and green salsa with fresh chips when we sat that tasted great, so I was excited to order drinks and food from there, but that was about it on the good side for me. My old fashioned was served with a straw and tasted like watered down whiskey. They had good margaritas and espresso martinis, but the meal I ordered -- filete cantinflas -- was very disappointing. Piece of meat served on a bed of cheese, was far from what I envisioned. The quality of the food was about on par with getting "gourmet" Mexican food from On the Border. Place looked nice inside with elegant decorations on the walls, but you can guarantee I won't be back. They also do not split checks, so forewarned if you come with a party. -- CIGAR LOUNGE: I also additionally went to the cigar lounge and the man there was a bit hostile. We walked here on a chilly day and were immediately able to be seated on their enclosed patio. It was a nice temperature and wasn't that cold which was nice! Our food was very tasty and our chips were served hot which I love! Our filete was very tasty as well! Our waiter seemed like he didn't really like us and wouldn't look at or talk to me which seemed strange, hence the four not five stars. The key lime pie was delicious as well and would recommend. Came here for a company dinner party. There were 14 of us total. We all were relatively on time for the 6pm reservation, so I'm not sure why it took the waiter over an hour to even take our orders (definitely made sure I ordered my martini as well with my food) but once we ordered everything came out pretty fast. When it comes to the food, I've had better bites. I thoroughly enjoy Mexican food and based on the wonderful description was excited to try their fajitas de cabrito (goat meat), but not only was it dry it lacked so much flavor. I mean not one thing I ate had salt, pepper, cumin, chile, paprika, adobo or anything on it. I'm not joking - not the meat, rice, beans...not even the pico de gallo or guacamole lol. My fiancé ordered their garlic shrimp guaymas & even that was just eh - heavily acidic with their use of lime or lemon which could've used a savory balance. Being that this restaurant is located in the more affluent part of Dallas I was expecting the standard for food to be up to par, but $$$ can't buy everything. What I will say though is the waitstaff were very sweet. Our water glasses were never less than half full & their alcoholic beverages are strong. I also enjoyed the overall design inside. It's like a never ending story of different dining rooms inside w/interesting decor sprinkled throughout, an enclosed heated patio w/additional seating for those who like to eat outdoors, & they even had a cigar lounge towards the very back. If you ask me if I think this place is worth it, I'd say come for their drinks, ambiance and cigar lounge. It's just hard to recommend eating here knowing you'd spend at minimum $30/per plate when the food is bland. read more

I honestly can't remember the last time I went to a restaurant and disliked everything I was served, but this was one of those rare experiences. 1. The chips and salsa were a disappointing start. The salsa verde looked and tasted more like enchilada sauce, and they brought out what appeared to be a block of butter with the chips. We never received tortillas, so we had no idea what it was supposed to be for. 2. The skinny margaritas were incredibly strong, but not in a good way. I enjoy a strong drink, but these tasted like they were mixed in an orange Igloo cooler with way too much sweet-and-sour mix. If a margarita makes you wince because of the mixer, something's off. And charging $18 for a skinny margarita makes it even harder to justify. 3. The atmosphere wasn't what I expected. It felt like a room full of tech and middle-aged finance bros, and it was awkward watching much younger women at the bar openly hitting on men three times their age. 4. The Javier Salad was so waterlogged that we had to send it back. Even our server looked confused. I tilted the plate and water literally pooled across it. When I took a bite, water came out of my mouth because the lettuce was that wet. To top it off, there was a quarter of an uncut tomato sitting on the side of the plate, which seemed like a very odd garnish. 5. I ordered the Filete Cantinflas since it's one of the restaurant's signature dishes. Unfortunately, it was a huge letdown. The beef was paper-thin, extremely tough, and honestly tasted more like al pastor shaved off a trompo than steak. It was stuffed with what felt like over a pound of cheese. I love cheese, but this completely overwhelmed the dish and made it unpleasant to eat. 6. The black refried beans were equally disappointing. There were maybe two spoonfuls, they were covered with even more cheese, and someone had simply stuck a tortilla chip into the bowl as if that counted as presentation. Everyone I know had hyped this place up for years, so I was genuinely excited to try it. Afterward, I looked it up and saw it only has a 3.5-star rating, and now I completely understand why. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, and I almost didn't write this one. But after multiple disappointing dishes, I couldn't think of a single thing I genuinely enjoyed. To make matters worse, we were celebrating my wife and my two-year anniversary. No one acknowledged it, said "Happy Anniversary," or did anything to recognize the occasion, even after it was mentioned. It made the whole experience feel surprisingly impersonal. I don't get the appeal of this place. First off, it's massive. But massive in a way that seems like a 12 year old designed it. It has probably 15 various dining rooms connected by strange hallways. It clearly has been added onto 20 times. And despite the enormity of the dining room, the seats are packed together like sardines. You have to ask your neighbors to kindly move to get out of your chair. Our table was half on a ramp so one side had a 15 degree angle while they ate. Considering reservations were made a week ago for 6 pm, that seemed pretty rude. Then the food. I had the shrimp that was stunningly bland for a Mexican restaurant. Then the sides were spinach and big chunks of carrots and squash. My dad had a featured dish that's steak with cheese. It had a lot more flavor. Everything is also quite expensive. Dishes are about $30 to start. The parking is terrible but there is a good valet service. And restaurant dining service was fine. I would suggest anyone considering this place to pick any one of 100 Mexican restaurants in a 5 mile radius. They'd be less expensive and have better food. read more

This was our family's first time at Javier's and we had an overall great experience - I was I could give 4.5 stars. We had family come in from out of town and we wanted to take them to a place well-known in Dallas for great experiences and wonderful food. I always appreciate when you can make a reservation, although we had to call the restaurant as opposed to being able to do it online. We were seated as soon as we got there and I was pleased that we (there were 7 of us) were put at a round table which always makes for great conversation where no one feels left out. The ambiance inside is wonderful and they even have spots where you can tuck away for a more quiet and secluded experience. The food and drinks did not disappoint! They don't have a kid's menu, but if you ask they can make something special and much simpler for them. My daughter ordered the beef/steak and thought it was absolutely delicious - she is a very picky eater. The only miss with our experience was that there was cheese on our beans and it wasn't indicated on the menu. Seems small, but as someone who doesn't enjoy cheese on their food I am always careful to read what's in my food and I'm sure to order it without cheese. Both my daughter and I received the beans with cheese on them so we had to ask them to remake it without it. Not overall terrible, and they fixed the issue quickly, but something to note if you're like us and you don't want cheese on your food. read more

I was so excited to go as I wanted to get away from Tex-Mex food that is around every corner. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre, the restaurant is noisy, seating is tight, and the drinks were over priced. I will say, while I did not find the food to be impressive, the margaritas are tasty but lack luster in presentation, and you will be paying way more than standard premium pricing. This place is old school, with fish and game lining the walls, the only cigar bar inside a restaurant in DFW, and plenty of waiters, bringing the food & drinks. It is usually crowded as it was on this Tuesday night in February. My son, in his last semester at nearby SMU, said how about Javier's dad? As usual it was on point. It's an old school Mexican restaurant with dim lighting and lots of charm. It's also super busy, so be sure you plan ahead. Service - As the host lead us to our table, I noticed severally people stopping him to say hello, and everyone was all smiles. Once we sat I expected a similar experience, but it wasn't the same. It appears Javier's has lots of regulars, and they were having a great time. But our table seemed to be ignored, we had to constantly request refills and our service was slow. Honestly, I was a bit jealous. No Stars. Food - The warm house chips came a red and verde salsa, and a small bowl with butter. Both salsas were delicious (green is spicy), and I was pleasantly surprised that the chips and butter worked. For my dinner, I had Javier's Filete Cantinflas. My super tender beef filet was stuffed with cheese and seasoned butter. Now, some people may think this dish is too cheesy, but I loved it. The soft cheesy was a perfect complement to the tenderloin. I mixed it with the mild sauce, Mexican rice, and enjoyed a great bite. For dessert, I chose the Careta Crepes. The caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream balanced each other out, but the crepe was buried underneath and became soggy. 1 1/2 Stars. Will I Return? - No. The signature dish (Filet Cantinflas) was great and worth my visit; however, I don't live close enough to visit again (or become a regular). 1st time here. Great food and service were amazing! For starters the quail and guacamole is a must. I knew it was going to be good cause they came out the gate with awesome flavors. I think this restaurant is more popular for its name because it's established in the community over the food. Make a reservation, or else it'll be difficult to get a seat. Valet parking is a must. Parking is awful in this area, so be prepared for that. They have 2 sections in the restaurant; the cigar lounge or the restaurant. Inside is pretty darkly lit, but it has a great atmosphere. Our server was fantastic! You can tell the staff are taken care of very well and they're happy to be there. I love goat meat, so I ordered the young goat dish, which was phenomenal!! Absolutely delicious! My friend ordered shrimp tacos, which was okay. It had a sauce on it my friend didn't like . We got drinks on the house, which was delicious! I had such a great experience here and I highly recommend this restaurant. Keep in mind that the food is more like tex-mex so you don't get disappointed. read more

It's definitely a spectacle! The restaurant is very big with spacious tables for group dinners. This is actually why I was there. Two of my college friends were tying the knot so we had a celebratory dinner before the weekend festivities began. I believe we had about 12 people. Usually with that grand of a group, places can get orders and drinks confused. That was not the case for these seasoned waiters. They nailed everything to a T. It was impressive! We split a few appetizers: bbq quail, nachos, chips and warm salsa (so good). Everyone seemed pleased. ;) For my entree, I decided on the Salmon En Chipotle.
