Chill place to grab a quick bite. You order at the counter and pick it up when ready. There are multiple big screen TVs which is great when a game is on - the staff was super nice and very friendly from the minute you walk in..they changed the channel to the game we wanted to watch without any questions. The place has a sports bar vibe but the crowd is older (think Luby's). Prices are very reasonable and they have very generous portions. The mesquite grilled trout with veggies and rice and is only 14$! It wasn't overflowing with flavor but to be fair the place is known for its burgers. As far as the food goes, between our party of 3 ppl, 4 different meals were ordered including a kids meal. Crab cakes were a nice size but the taste wasn't what could be expected, considering that many places have good crab cakes. Rice and veggies were not eaten. Combo Po'boy of catfish and shrimp could've had more fish on it, flavor was okay. Fried okra could've been cook thoroughly and seasoned more. Batter should be crunchy, not okra. Jax's is a large, half-pound patty, machine formed from above-average ground beef. Sadly, it appears to have been frozen, and the juiciness suffers because of this. But it's grilled, and picks up a nice flavor in the process. Condiments are high quality and plentiful, and the bun is just right. Good quality food... FAST! It's almost faster than some fast food joints, but it's more of a sit down type place. I've only been here for lunch (too many times to count) and this is always on the tip of my tongue when wanting some quality food fast for quick work lunches. Normally food you order at the counter - whether it be bowtie pasta with grilled chicken, snow peas, and 'shrooms with creamy sauce or simple Jax burger w/fries - is ready in around 5-10 mins after the order is placed. They broadcast your order number over loudspeakers and you pick up and go sit or take out. Good varieties of food with generous portions and good flavor. I have visited this establishment many times but this time the food was heavily breaded (chicken fried steak) Plus they had a band and many tables were occupied with 2 customers being saved for friends , no reserved signs on these tables .. many customers just drinking at the tables . Jax is known for their Zydeco Friday nights - which is more of a bar and dance joint rather than a restaurant. Great music, great drinks. But recently on several return visits to Houston, I was taken there by a fellow local yelper Tyson R. to try their mesquite grilled dishes. I had never even noticed that this Jax served food before because I always went straight to the bar and dance floor from the back entry. Having lived in San Diego for over 6 years now, I really miss the Mesquite flavor that's ever-so-abundant in Houston. It''s a flavor you become accustomed to after being there for a while and the flavor gets a little underappreciated. Jax gets it right! On the last three visits I tried the grilled pork chops, a burger, grilled ribeye and a sampling of a grilled T-Bone steak. The seasoning and taste was great for all of those entrees, but I was surprised at how thin the ribeye was. The T-Bone was much better in terms of steaks.On one occasion, I was with my sister who had a caesar salad with grilled chicken. It looked really good and she said she liked it, but couldn't finish it all because of the size of it. I would expect anything that makes it passed that mesquite grill of theirs to be awesome. As far as a drink tip, I prefer sweet strong drinks - I prefer to feel the alcohol and not taste it much. I've always had the frozen drinks at Jax and they've always gone down well (not without a brain freeze or three) and with a much welcomed delayed after-kick (TM). Tried to come here once on a weekend night and got blown away by their music--I'm not kidding! The live band they had was so loud and crazy, I had to get out! Tried again a second time during the week day and it was much easier to find a seat and converse without having to scream at the other person. My sister and I split their chicken fried chicken and it was delicious and filling!! Along with their gravy and mashed potatoes... thick and creamy... Yum. For dessert we grabbed their cream cheese brownie, which we forced ourselves to only eat a small portion and save the rest for later. It's a crying shame how good food can be so bad for you. You just have to experience Jax Grill. I give this place 5 stars because taking into account the type of eatery it is, it doesn't get any better than this. The food is excellent. I chose the chicken fried steak and fries. I loved every bit of my meal. The steak was done to perfection, and fast! The cream gravy was also very well done. The portion size was OK. The live zydeco bands on the weekends always leads to a good time, whether you actually get out on the floor and dance, or watch others get out there. I recommend the fish and shrimp plate, which is excellent EVERY time. Plus, the food comes so quick, that you barely have to wait. There is seating inside and outside, although it can be hard to find a table because it gets so packed (it's well worth it though). The one negative is parking. The parking is not so great. The place is always packed on the weekend, so the parking lot is generally full, which means you have to find another alternative (like the boxing gym across the street, but be prepared to pay). The parking lot at Jax is unpaved and rocky/dirt, which can be messy when the weather is bad. Don't let this stop you from getting out there though. It's great! read more

Today at lunch 2 cohorts (JC & Stephanie) and myself made a mad dash to Jax Grill like 3 calves at a new water gate, we were just that hungry! We arrived at about 11:30 and the place was packed. I remember when if you went somewhere for lunch before noon, people thought you were crazy for eating lunch so early, but now if you get there at 11:30 not only is the line out the door and down the road a piece (okay maybe not that bad), but you find yourself waiting for a table. I was so hungry that I ran out of the office and forgot my camera, so no pictures to show but next time. We have all been to JAX a hundred million times and know the layout pretty well. Jax offers such a wide variety menu that includes desserts that no one should ever walk in and not be able to find something to satisfy their taste buds, hey I know, they call me "Particular Patty and Pickie Vikki" and I keep coming back. I have had the burger several times and wasn't really feeling it today and besides I don't care to much for Jax burgers. There is more bun than meat, the onions and tomatoes are always limp as if they had been previously frozen. I like the quesadilla's but wanted something more so instead of ordering from the big menu my eyes scanned the daily specials menu and decided on the philly cheese steak sandwich w/fries and so did Stephanie. JC had his usual: queso w/chips and the gyro w/fries. I have to say that Jax's queso w/white cheese is so gooey and tasty and the chips were fresh and crunchy. I didn't taste his gyro but Stephanie did and said it was very good and next time that is what she will be getting since the philly cheese and fries did nothing for her (she didn't finish hers). She said that her fries were limp and cold and that the philly cheese was bland and looked like steak on a hot dog bun. I was famished and finished mine off completely. Being a "Pickie Vikki" I really surprised myself. What? The steak was sliced thin and had melted jack cheese with grilled onions, green and yellow peppers and could have been seasoned better so yes Stephanie was right it was very bland and did look like a hot dog bun but was on a hoagie bun. My fries were hot, crisp and seasoned (don't know why Steph's fries were cold and limp) but anyway they were good. Jax offers Zydeco on Fridays (not my thing), TVs tuned into ESPN, patio seating and a full bar so there is something for everyone. Overall JC had the better lunch today! Jax has always been my go to place for a good burger , always has been cooked properly to the temperature I requested , and has consistently maintained the same level of quality and taste. This place is absolutely affordable and very fast , the ideal place to go if you only have 30 Minutes to take for a lunch break . I read that other reviewers mentioned the sight of a roach .....they have an open patio...what do you expect , also this is the only insect we have not found a way to kill properly , I pay for pest control at my house and low and behold I still find our dear friend the roach , it's Texas people , if the state bird was the state anything it would be the roach for us and every state. So stop acting like not seeing one means there aren't any , that just means they have better hiding places or the staff have really fast hands . read more

Went to happy hour on last Friday around noon, this was my first visit. I ordered the crawfish penne with spinach and decided to add chicken. I believe this dish is exclusively for happy hour -not sure. My food was served to me around 30-35 mins later, steaming hot and smelling delicious! Loved the alfredo sauce and the plate was seasoned to perfection. My bf had filet mignon and judging by the one bite he was willing to offer me it was great. Lol During my wait and while dining, I indulged in multiple margaritas that I definitely enjoyed. For the size of the cup and the amount of tequila per serving I believe the price is reasonable. One thing I can say is there was a long line to place orders and mostly outdoor seating available. Based on reviews and my personal experience I understand why this business was busy. Jax Grill is one of those places most Houstonians have been to or will go to as long as they live here. It's a place with dependable service, dependable grub and beer! The fam and I hit up Jax after some shopping at Ikea and all decided we were in a burger mood. Jax is one of those places you can always get a burger, made the way you like it, for a reasonable amount of cash (about $4 for a cheeseburger). They don't get all fancy with weird, out-of-this world kinds of toppings, they stick with the basics - meat, cheese, maybe some bacon and the vegetables. They do give you some options as far as the cheese, but keeping it simple is sometimes what really makes a burger. I had a Monterrey jack cheese burger, with lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup and of course...ranch dressing for dipping. That burger was absolutely delectable! It helped that I had been craving a burger for about 2 days, so I'm sure that increased my taste bud happiness. I also ordered some fries on the side, which for not being a big "fry fan" they were pretty darn good. Usually this place is way more packed, and they have some great entertainment on the weekends. Met some former coworkers here for lunch last weekend and we definitely appreciated the ability to eat and socialize without the pressure to vacate the premises as soon as we finished eating. I am a turkey burger connoisseur and I'm sorry to say theirs just are not good. But in reality, not sure if I even expected some mind-blowing culinary experience. Jumping Jax Sack. First of all there is a significant difference between the Belaire location and this one. The Heights location is a higher quality restaurant. The staff seem to take more care and effort and attempt to connect with their client. Second - I have eaten at this restaurant on a regular basis sine it opened in the 90's and I must say that they have been consistently good. The Chicken fried Chicken is as good as I have had in Houston. The West Texas Burger is probably my favorite burger in town. And the very odd Fajitas are really good. Third - They have regularly surprised me with the specials. More often than not the specials left me thinking that I was eating at a more expensive establishment. Fourth - Live music! This is an old Texas community atmosphere that crosses cultural boundaries with great success. Years ago I brought my 3 year old daughter out one Friday night to hear a zydeco band.... I almost cried when she grabbed the hand of an elderly man and beaconed him to dance with her. The two were from different generations and different cultural backgrounds and this simply did not seem to matter to either of the two of them..... To me places like Jax bring our community back together. And the fact that they do have very good food is an added bonus. Since you've probably read all 20 other reviews, I'll get right to the point. Read the menu online before you go as it all sounds really good and you have to stand at the counter to order. They have samples of their specials on the counter to consider as well. The kids meals have cute names like Scooby Doo grilled cheese, Tom and Jerry catfish, Garfield chicken strips, Kermit corn dogs etc.. They have IBC rootbeer on tap. The chicken fried chicken was so, so good largely because the batter was so light and crunchy and the gravy was outrageously good. Not thinned bechamel with milk--but real cream. Not too sweet, not too anything. It wasn't huge, but very satisfying. If you like onion rings, make sure to order them here! They are huge, thick and substantial with the same excellent batter as the cfc. Most of all, save room for the turtle cheesecake. Wow! It has a very, very thick crunchy chocolate cookie crust--the rest of it is good too, but the thick crust is, delicious. It was so good that I'll have a tough time deciding next time because they are probably all that good. It made my son say: "If it weren't possible to become fat, I'd just want to sit here all day and eat turtle cheesecake and drink this root beer" and "I wish I'd brought my camera because I'd put a picture of that cheesecake on my desktop" They also have a reach in by the serving line of large fruit plates on display if you are feeling healthy=) Always nice to see if the fruit is ripe or rotten Before you make a meal of it. I can't believe I haven't already written about this place - it's a neighborhood staple that in the hubbub of constantly opened trendy places around Washington is overlooked, but it is consistent and great for many reasons. My first experience with Jax was Hurricane Rita. After the awfulness of Katrina, many Houstonites got on the freeway for a mass Texodus that went nowhere. The rest of us stayed home to weather what turned out to be absolutely nothing. By Saturday night, we were looking to get out and this place was actually open and down the street. To think on a night when no one was expecting them open, they got a skeleton crew together and let everyone in was awesome. Not to mention the food was great and the staff friendly. Isn't that all you want from a place, really? So they had me at "Hello, Rita" and I've been back since. Because it is an order an the front, sit where you'd like sort of place, it is perfect for groups meeting up (Happy Birthday!) who want to get together and have a meal, but pay for themselves without the drama of splitting checks. We get together here regularly for this and there's a room in the back for this particular purpose. They never mind us bringing in an outside cake and we eat up the wide array of food. There are TVs for the game everywhere (so no one's missing anything) and always a ton of seating. Some of the food specials change, but my faves are the Crusted Chicken and then hands-down the fried fish with vinegar sauce. Absolute heaven. Good corn and chicken chowder and then the rest of the menu is full of all types of food, all good. Spoke to the manager about the cold West Texas(I guess since so desert dry)Burger and fries. Food taste extremely bad I mean I think could been more satisfied eating the bun alone. When you just want good food in unfussy surroundings, Jax Grill is the place to go. It has a casual, roadhouse atmosphere with lots of TV's but best of all, they have really fresh, good food. I often get their turkey burger with onion rings or if I feel like a splurge, their chicken fried chicken with cream gravy is stupendous. If you want healthy food, they have a number of great salads ans my girlfriend is a fan of their Black Bean Soup. Tip- If the order line is long, you can place your order at the bar and order and you'll get your food faster that way. Jax is also a great place to go with kids since they can be loud and messy and no one cares. One thing I should note is that on Friday and Saturday nights, Jax features boisterous live French-Creole Zydeco music. My company catered a lunch for 40 people and not only was the food great but so was the delivery. We ordered fajitas, beans, rice, chips, and iced tea with a couple vegetarian meals. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the rice was just the right consistency and the tortillas were packaged perfectly to stay warm. The food was delivered right on time (trust me, this can be an issue with many places), piping hot and well organized.
