Was on this side of town and looked for places with fried fish. It was the middle of the day so it wasn't really busy nor empty which is interesting because the lot felt full. This suggests that on a really busy day parking would be tight. The ordering process was quick. The counter and menus are available soon after entry. So I ordered the catfish meal with came with fries, hush puppies and okra and grabbed a seat until the order was ready. It was a huge piece of fish. I wasn't expecting that much and should've paid more attention to the reviews/pics. Unfortunately, as large as it was, it didn't work for me. It wasn't fried consistently and had portions with too much breading and portions that were a bit slimy. I tried to drown it in hot sauce to help with the flavor that also lacked but that didn't help much. I also asked for no okra but got a ton of it anyway. The 2 small hush puppies were ok and the fries weren't memorable. I also noticed that it's one of those places with staff constantly cleaning but it doesn't help it look or feel cleaner. Meh. Zydeco, Zydeco and Zydeco! It was such a good night for my mom and I on a Saturday night! My mom seen a Facebook posting and wanted to come. My mom ordered the shrimp basket and I order a bowl of gumbo. My mom was pleased with her shrimp basket and I was pleased with my gumbo. However, there was a few shells in it...but what we enjoyed the most was the zydeco. The band was great and I loved seeing people dancing!! read more

I always enjoy the zydeco bands and the drinks, but I'm definitely not impressed with the food. Ordered the sirloin medium with baked potato and salad. The salad was the only thing that was right. Good casual spot. You order at the counter and pick up your order when called. The grilled shrimp salad is simple but good. I had the baked potato also, nothing fancy. I'd say the food and menu is overall simple but good, reasonable prices. The atmosphere is good and everyone is friendly. They have indoor and outdoor seating. There is a parking lot but it gets filled pretty quick. There is street parking available. I wouldnt say this is a vegetarian friendly place which is expected. Well, I'm going to have to try some other things, in order to give this place a better review. I mean, all I have was a baked potato with chopped beef on it. It was OK, but it was rather tiny (AND three was no BBQ sauce for it). When I think baked pots, I think Papas and their potatoes aren't tiny. The restaurant was Ok. Wow, these people really know how to party! I went to Jax's grill for my friend's birthday. First thing I have to tell you that parking is almost impossible after 8:30! Seriously, we had to park several blocks away. Once we actually got to the restaurant there was hell of a party going on in there. There was a live band playing Zydeco, people dancing and others just eating and enjoying the music. Most importantly the place was packed! Why two stars?? Well, it is definitely not my kind of place. I would never go there if not with a group. I had a few older men approach me that just made me feel uncomfortable. The food was OK. I got the fried shrimp and fries. Everything was just super greasy. I was also very over dressed. My friend said we would all meet up for dinner so I dressed as if I were going to dinner. Too bad everyone there was dressed as if they were on their way to the park. One good thing about the place is that you can go there and have some food and not worry about anyone criticizing ANYTHING. They did have other choices in the menu that I thought would be somewhat interesting. I am not saying I would never go there again, but it would definitely not be my first choice. I have been to Jaxs many times over the years and it has never been disappointing. Casual environment with an ice house feel. Offers a pretty good regular menu with several daily specials. You order at the counter and fill your own drink (unless it's an adult beverage. You think pick your food up from the counter once your order number is called. You can sit at the bar, which offers full service! I have tried the burgers. Maybe not the best in Houston, but they are good. The nachos are simple but good. Overall, I think they offer something for everyone and and all the food items are good and reasonably price! My favorite is the corn and chicken chowder. I often get a cup of it with most of my meals there. The restaurant has a nice covered patio which is great even during the summer. I highly recommend Jax Grill! read more

So I hadn't been here in years, and Cesar & I decided to stop by and revisit. I ordered a baked potato with chicken and a soup of the day which was a lemon artichoke & crab, and he had the chicken fried chicken. The day we went was very slow so we were quickly attended, questions answered and suggestions made for big plus there. The food, on the other hand, mediocre for the price. The potato was probably the best thing on the table; however for the price, I would've gave gotten the exact same over twice the size at a local popular bbq place for just under the price here. Cesar's chicken fried chicken was a little over done AND the cream gravy was very garlicky. Who does that? I'm sorry, but cream gravy should be creamy and peppery - that's it; don't mess up a good thing. Needless to say, it didn't have a place on the plate and did not get eaten. The fries were good, nothing special. The soup was actually a shocking combination of tang and creaminess. Would I order it again? Probably not. I just can't bring myself to justify the near $40 tab for the quality of our meal that day. went at 4 pm yesterday. they were busy but not too busy. most of the tables are for larger parties. asked to sit at the bar & was rudely told no by the bartender as they were moving all the chairs. there were 4 people who appeared to be regulars who were not asked to leave. one woman even had a dog at the bar. we would have been on the side away from the dance floor so not in anyone's way. the woman with the dog said to just ask for chairs & they would bring them out. obviously that was not the case. we went elsewhere. too bad for the bartender as we left a $30 tip on a $72 bill for the excellent service we had there. Do NOT recommend. There are lots of options in the Heights and this is NOT a good one. For starters the TRump flag hanging on patio surprised us. Food was just ok - nothing spectacular or unique and definitely NOT worth the price I paid. The fries and onion rings tasted like they were cooked in old oil. The egg rolls were tasty but very greasy. I ordered the trout which had a good flavor but was very small and paper thin. This was served with a very bland rice pilaf. I ordered the fajita salad to take home for my spouse...again it was just "ok" and not worthy of a repeat visit. I have been to Jax Grill (JG) a couple of times before, and I haven't been disappointed. The daily specials are enticing and worth trying if you're a newbie. The seating at JG is seat yourself and hope that your table is not sticky. The place is spacious enough that it doesn't feel claustrophobic. You can genuinely eat your meal in peace. The bussers are quick to clean off tables, and the bartender is fantastic. This place is definitely a go-to for a playoff game or a quick meeting. read more

Golden bits... seriously? They named their fried catfish nuggets Golden Bits? It cracks me up every time. It's a great value for what you get... a bunch of golden bits *snicker* and fries for like $6. It's a good deal. The chicken sandwich is just ok. I hate it when you eat a chicken breast and there is that nasty tendon rubbery thing down the middle. I don't know how some chicken sandwiches don't have it, but Jax's sandwiches do. Yuck. I can say that service is fast! No long waits at this location! The lighting in this place is so strange. I felt like I was being interrogated. There are randomly placed lights that hit you like a police light depending on where you sit in the restaurant. So pick your seat carefully. read more

Haven't been there for years but decided to try after renovation? I used to order chicken fried steak offen!!! Had to try and this did not remind me of the great meal I had on the past. Nothing in a good/great steak was there. Thin crusty batter covered a very thin pick of over cooked meat. Gravy had very little taste and not the consistency of creamy white gravy! Other menu item I saw people order looked pretty good. I'll give Jack's another try but order something other then what I had. Try to patronize restaurants in the area and will give Jack's another try, maybe soon. read more

Jax is a pretty chill, laid back spot to relax, eat, and even have a few drinks. I was with a party of about 15 and we were easily able to put a few tables together to seat ourselves. This place is no frills so get in line and order, choose your seat and they will call your order number when your food is ready to be picked up. I had the fried catfish plate and it was okay. The fish was a bit slimy and undercooked. Next time I would love to try a burger. My friends raved about the chicken fried steak. Well my first visit here! Freezing inside so bring a sweater. I ordered chicken strips with gravy and mashed potatoes. I've had worse before, so that's a compliment. Chicken strips were barely hot since they seemed to have been cooked prior to my order. The mashed potatoes is straight out of the cookbook that geriatric centers that calls for no salt or seasoning. The gravy must be powdered, it just tasted bland and also not very warm. I'm sure that some will like this place, I did not really care for the bland precooked chicken. read more

I would like to preface this review by saying that I was not born and raised in Houston. Maybe this is why I don't get the big deal about this place. It's obvious that the majority love it, as it's always packed. I came on a Thursday lunch hour and the place was slammed. Luckily they have a large parking lot and we barely found a spot. Anyway, I have been a couple of times, and I still don't get it. It's very decent food at best. I guess it's good in that the menu caters to everyone and whatever you might be in the mood for, after all, it's a HUGE menu. But with that, also comes some consequences right? I mean it's very easy to cook up wonderful dishes when you only have a few to make, but when you have so many items on the menu, how can you really make "everything" be its best? Hence my review. This is what I find here. The food is so-so. Nothing that makes you go wow, I must come back. I would also like to note that they are pretty brave to have room for a "tip" when you pay at the front desk, when you place your order. Not only are you not ever "served", but you have to get your own drink, silverware, and hope that you can find an open table that is clean. In addition, you must listen above all of the hustle and bustle of the diners for your order number to be called, at which point, you go get your food. When was a tip deserved?? Maybe the busboys that we never see? I don't know. I left a tip anyway though.... Overall, it's not a very welcoming atmosphere, it's loud and cramped with the tables all so close together. I rolled into Jax for lunch with a bunch of coworkers. Parking could be tough during the lunch hours rush. We proceeded to order at the counter where I opted for the Catfish platter. The platter set me back $12-15. After 5-10 minutes, my number was called. I went to pick up my food and then worked on my plate. The batter was well-seasoned but the breaded catfish fillets were too flaky. It was difficult to get to the right bite size for me (* as each fish fillet broke to little pieces when I put my fork on it) And lastly, the fries were OK. The atmosphere was lively but a little dark. There are TVs all over the place. There was outside seating that is too hot to sit in the Houston summer (* so we opted to stay inside). With all said and done, Jax Grill was Ok. Not even edible. If I hadn't paid for it, I wouldn't have eaten past the first bite. We both ordered shrimp, mine stuffed, hers en brochette. Both were over-cooked and tough. The stuffed shrimp tasted like straight corn meal. The brochette bacon and shrimp couldn't be cut with a fork. The fries with the stuffed shrimp came tepid and were quickly cold. Ordered the Black and Bleu burger over Uber Eats to pick up myself at their Bellaire location. I think my mistake was clicking an option to add Swiss cheese to the burger. I assumed this meant they would have both the blue cheese mentioned in the menu as well as the Swiss because it was an extra charge. I pick up my food, get home, and find that the burger ONLY has a single slice of Swiss on it. They included the bacon, at least, so I know they understood it was the Black and Bleu burger. It was still tasty, and I will probably give this place another shot, but really disappointed that the burger came without bleu cheese just because I thought I was *adding*, not *replacing* with Swiss. read more

This seems to be a very popular place to grab lunch, the food is served fast which I'm sure is part of the attraction, but with all the great restaurants in the area you have to offer something unique and it has to be consistent. I thought the chicken fried chicken was pretty solid but the catfish was just okay, the sides are typical high carb options so I'll take this place in moderation. I use to love eating at Jax in Bellaire but this is the second time I tried the one on Sheppard and I find it sucks! I picked up my burger as soon as my number was called and by the time I took the first bite the burger was cold and hard! I think they precook them and leave the patties sitting out. The bun was also cold, like someone just took it out of a pack from Kroger. The experience was awful. I totally should have went to What-A-Burger instead. To top it off, they now service Pepsi! This place could be ok but they nickel and dime you for everything. I ordered chicken strips for my son and asked for a side of ranch and they charged $0.50 for it. My father ordered a kids meal because he had already eaten prior to joining us and they charged him an extra $2.. which is ok but they didn't even tell us about the charge otherwise we would have probably not ordered anything for him. The entire restaurant smelt like the restroom. They have to be having some sewer issues of some sort. The food was ok nothing great but enough to make you feel satisfied. We went here looking for drinks and a live band on a Sunday. The drinks were good but no band on Sunday, Bartender said Friday and Saturday. Our bartender was Ashton and she was awesome with the drinks. I thought mine was way too strong since I was driving so she lighten it up nicely for me and it was still good. She also doctored up my friend drink too make it more flavorful. It's a nice atmosphere to chill with friends. We didn't order any food so can't give a review on that.
