Always loved the old Jay's location on Divisadero, so glad that the Mission location is still carrying the flag. Jay's is a great stop for delicious seitan, non-meat "cheese" steaks. They can do any of their cheesesteaks with seitan, and they can be made vegan by removing cheese (obviously) and opting for vegan mayo. They also have a non-meat called "chick non-veg" that can be used, which is actually my favorite. On top of excellent sandwiches (which are more of a 2-person job), they have several different options for fries. All your favorites should be represented: tots, waffle, curls, seasoned, etc. Pair a sandwich and some fries and you've got a party. Couple bummers, to me, that removes that 1-star. First, they don't deliver to haight ashbury (a bummer, since I recently moved there from lower haight). Second, if you order at their location, they only take cash. I basically never have cash, and it's a bit of a pain for me to find an ATM that doesn't charge me a fee. This means I would probably order ahead via the app, which I'd rather not do since I know it takes fees away from their revenue. Still, I'm happy to get my hands on one of their sandwiches whenever I can. For vegans, you need to say "Vegan Mayo" and "No Cheese," as of 8/2017, Jay's STILL doesn't have one of the 100 vegan cheeses for sale. I'm sure if enough of us comment on this fact, it will happen. That never happened, most places never read the comments so it's best if you call in that kind of stuff. The food however was ready when I got there. I got Jays original cheesesteak with everything and garlic fries. It was prepaid so I was in and out under a minute which was super convenient and the food was still warm by the time I got home. Garlic fries tasted pretty damn good, most places cant do good garlic fries. They were very garlicky, not too oily and had a decent amount of parsley. They were a little soft, garlic fries are best crispy. The cheesesteak was good, very full, meaty and of course cheesy. Wow! Their cheesesteaks are absolutely delicious! I've been to a few cheesesteak trucks for lunch which ended up being disappointing so I was prepared to be disappointed by Jay's as well. I was completely wrong! I ordered Jay's Mushroom and the steak, mushrooms and grilled onions were all cooked perfectly and blended so well with the cheese. The bread was perfect as well, not too soft and not too hard. The sandwich itself was massive and pretty filling. The chicken mushroom spinach sandwich is a pretty neat twist on cheesesteaks as well, but I still prefer Jay's Mushroom. I ordered delivery from them and it was still in great condition when it arrived. They also do a good job of following the special instructions (I specifically asked for no mustard and no pickles). My only complaint is that it's pretty expensive, but they give a large portion so it evens out. read more

I ordered a cheesesteak sub with bacon n mild peppers, and the vegan version of it (they still don't have a vegan cheese source yet :( but everything else was vegan otherwise). Also with peppers. The peppers seemed to just be pickled jalapeños, which were tasty but def spicy-which was way too much for the meat eater -who liked everything else about out but that. I felt like I had eaten a real meat one, there was a lot of greasy goodness going on, didn't miss the meat at all. Even had the I ate a burger aroma that clings to you for the rest of the day. These were via delivery, obviously cooled slightly but still very scrumptious. I can't imagine that my vegan one was cooked separately from the meat grill so take that for what you will.
