Very underwhelmed by this place. Started out with Golgappa, which were crispy round things filled with some sort of meat, served cool, with various sauces. Just ok. Then had surat Ka bread roll, which wasn't bad, but nothing amazing. Then they gave us another dish, either comped or by accident (didn't charge us for it either way) which was ok. We couldn't figure out what it was. Seemed something along the lines of quiche. Then we were bold and tried Bheja fry, which was fried brains. But it really wasn't fried, it was very soupy, like runny eggs in a sauce. It wasn't terrible, and it was fun to try something new, but not great. Our entree was peepaywale wadi aloo, which was basically a lentil stew in a box. It wasn't very good. They described it as having dumpling-fingerling potatoes. There were no type of dumplings, and there were nowhere near enough potatoes We asked for rice to try to get some more down, but gave up, not worth it. Just a lousy dish. Overall, nothing was particularly good. Pretty disappointing meal. And they need to make the descriptions more accurate because right now they are not. But I won't be returning here. read more

Food - its very authentic. The restaurant is inspired by Indian street food / dhabas and the chefs were recruited from some of India's top street spots. This is the most authentic Indian food I've had outside of India -- the preparation is on par with India, and they haven't watered down or tweaked the recipes for an American palate. Some of the favorites: Half ticket: mutton kebabs, basket chaat, empire fried chicken, paneer sandwich Full ticket: lamb curry, chicken biryani, dal (I know, basic but a goody) The cocktails are awesome too -- everyone has an elegant Indian twist. Was really excited to try out Jazba after passing by months ago. I liked how fast the food came out and was appropriately coursed out. I had atari paneer with butter naan. I loved the balance of spices and tanginess. I especially loved that the paneer was a little soft and just a bit sour - it gave the dish a unique, fresh flavor compared to other paneer masala dishes I have had. This place is just a really good restaurant. I dragged my friend here who is a steak and potatoes kinda guy and he actually liked it too. My favorite item was the basket chaat, it's served very cold and is an extremely refreshing flavor combination. The pork belly curry was delicious, right amount of salt with a little kick. but, it's a lot of food. Me and my friend ordered the same thing and the waiter tried to warn us that we should all order different items and share, but we didn't get what he was saying. We thought he meant the entrees are small. Anyways he was right, I recommend each person at your table order a different item. The portions are quite large just FYI in case you can't take a doggy bag bc you are going somewhere else after. My friend had the goat in a cashew type sauce and it was the best entree. We also had the minced mutton appetizer, which has a little kick. My friend who is the picky eater finished up everything which goes to show how good this place is. I went with poor friends. He walked in on a Friday night around 830-9p and were able to get a last-minute table "outside ". It was a covered area with windows all around, if you sit next to the windows, you will feel a draft. I was fine, but my friends were a bit cold. My friends ordered a chai tea and the way that they poured it, the server took it back, because he said it wasn't warm enough. It took a little bit of time to get another order, and my friends thought that the second round was colder than the first time they poured the chai tea. Their espresso martini was very good but definitely all the drinks are pricey and it's generally a pretty pricey place. I think it is a little overpriced for the kind of food they are serving, I got the korma which was good reminds me a little bit of tikka masala but had bones so a little difficult to eat and I ordered an extra naan because the roti that it came with was not enough to pick up all the sauce. With the drink, naan, entrée, tax and tip I spent $73. If you wanna spend a lot of money on Indian food, this is the place but there's definitely more appropriately priced restaurants in the East Village. read more

The food is impossibly good and authentic. We ordered paneer teh pe teh and murgh mullah pyaza. Rumali rotis were insanely good. They gave us some Darjeeling tea and it was phenomenally excellent. A little pinch of salt was less in the paneer dish in my opinion but that is more of a specific taste for me. Note to owner: They should certainly open a restaurant in Mountain View, Palo Alto and San Francisco. This is a golden opportunity to capitulate on the Bay Area market. The only other competition is Ettan, rooh, saffron , yellow chilli etc. But man this was a great experience. We also just happened to run into the restaurant after travelling in the city during Thanksgiving when every other place was closed. read more

It was our first time at Jazba. We were able to get reservations for a Friday evening easily. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful mural paintings that featured different street foods of India. Ambiance and service were both great. However, we got seated in the back room which has very poor lighting compared to the front of the restaurant. Space is tight and very close to the tables next to us that we could easily hear their conversations. In terms of food, there are some great vegetarian options. We loved the Atari paneer. The gravy was delicious and paneer was so soft. But it only came with one butter naan. We ordered a wadi kulcha which we thought was on the sweeter side. The kachori Kadi bhujjiye was good too. The cocktails are strong and creative. The portions are small for the price. I asked about Jain options and they said only 2-3 of their dishes could be made Jain. The food was amazing. My boyfriend is Indian, from Delhi, he has taken me to countless Indian restaurants. We both agree hands down this is the best Indian restaurant we've been to in the New York/New Jersey area. I took pictures of everything and labeled them all. We were 4 people. We shared 4 half tickets and 2 full tickets, we had cocktails and tried all three desserts. I cannot begin to describe each dish individually because every dish brought freshness and flavor to another level. The cocktails were great and the desserts were delicious. The restaurant itself was so cute and intimate. The vibe and decor were on point. The whole staff were super friendly, but the two women who were our main servers were the best. So friendly and attentive with great recommendations. There is not one thing I would change and we will be back again. If there was an option for 6 this would be the place to get it. read more

My partner and I are ardent admirers of Junoon and were eagerly anticipating the opening of their new outpost in our East Village neighborhood. Upon arrival, we were ushered to our seats, which were crammed into a corner so tightly that my partner had difficulty moving their chair. The server approached our table and, despite noticing the cramped conditions, proceeded to disregard our concerns and ramble on about drinks. We ordered the Aloo Dum Dahi Bada (lentil fritters), Kachori Kadhi Bhujje (onion kachori), and fried sardines. For our main course, we opted to share the vegetable stew. Within a couple of minutes of placing our order, all three appetizers arrived. In my opinion, this was far too quick. A more leisurely pace would have allowed us to savor our drinks and settle into our meal. The drinks themselves did not arrive until about 10 minutes into our meal. The fritters were cold and mushy, and the accompanying sauce was lukewarm. The onion kachori was so chewy that we were unable to cut it with a knife. The flavor was bland. The sardines were overcooked and tasted stale. The only dish that was remotely palatable was the vegetable stew. We ordered two cocktails, one of which was the Vesper. I have had Vespers before, and this one tasted like rubbing alcohol. The balance was completely off. I decided to switch to a white wine and ordered one. The server brought a wine glass and left it on the table without bothering to bring the wine. We asked for the white wine twice before someone finally came to our table with another empty wine glass. The service was disorganized and chaotic. There were a few other things that went wrong during our meal, but I will spare you the details. Suffice it to say that the food was mediocre and the service was disappointing. It was an amateur hour all around. The whole thing was $200 and we were still hungry afterwards. read more

Jazba is now my favorite Indian Restaurant. Not only is the food excellent, but the whole vibe in the restaurant that comes from every detail from the decor, the illustrations on the menu, and the little stories written about the Indian ingredients on the back of the menu, to the outfit of the waiters and bartender, and how friendly they are- you feel so welcomed into the whole experience. My friend loved the fried chicken, I loved the murgh and vegetable stew - the spices were balanced, unique and rich. I was very excited to dine at Jazba because I love everything about Junoon. Sadly for me the experience fell short on multiple fronts. The service was actually bad...nobody put in effort to explain how the menu works but I saw that the table next to us was treated quite differently. My friend and I tried three dishes : Aslam's butter chicken, paneer teh pe teh and the green chili chicken. The dish that stood out the most to me was Aslam's butter chicken. The bread/roti while delicious falls short due to the quantity. What you're left with is the delicious gravy but not enough bread. The other two dishes we ordered fell short on several fronts, the most important one being an imbalance of spices (not enough salt/chilli). The sad part is that since our server never bothered to check with us for allergies or spice tolerance, nothing was made to our palette. Here's where Junoon stands out for me. The food at Junoon is perfectly spiced and presented in contrast to the food we received here. To add to this, the seating is extremely tight. I get that most places in NYC offer tight seating but the seating here is extremely uncomfortable- especially if you're sitting on a chair. Also, the staff usually doesn't accommodate moving to a different table if you don't like where you are seated. They did try to celebrate my friend's birthday with a candle and a small dessert which was sweet. All in all, I'm not sure I'd return. read more

OK .. kudos to Chef Akshay and the team for creating an experience that is true to its roots, Jazba takes authenticity to another level. Granted, the team is limited with the quality of the US produce but even then the results are stellar. We had the galauti kabab, butter chicken, brain, Haleem and the mutton pasli. The galauti had the perfect balance of spice, which is taken for granted as most places are unnecessarily heavy on cardamom .. these guys are not fucking around. The Bheja fry .. when I was in Mumbai, my goto place was Raju kabab corner with the most epic bheja fry .. Jazba delivers that exact flavor without the greasiness of the idea. Haleem .. I don't have the words to explain how well balanced is the fried onions with the goat .. Butter chicken .. if you are from India and like sweet Sambar then this is not the place for you .. the butter chicken (on then bone) was the most epic dish on the menu and it's an approach that will piss some audience (but then who gives a fuck) Finally .. the mutton pasli .. absolutely epic .. masala was just perfect .. no gaminess .. insane .. not worth the value but I think they are going to adjust the price to justify the quantity .. but it was the highlight for us. At the end of the day Jazba is on to something and has bigger better things on the way .. kudos to the bar staff and the servers as the drinks were on point and the service was spectacular. The menu features forgotten gems of Indian cuisine that makes this place different than any other indian place in new york. I loved Jazba! If you want a truly authentic Indian food experience, you can hop on to this pretty train with a half ticket (appetizers) or a full ticket (mains)! The drinks are amazing and we had Kesar (favorite), Imli, Pipli & Kokum. The appetizers were the best and I would recommend to order as many as you want - you can even skip the mains! We had Aslams butter chicken and Aminabad Galouti Kebab. Mouthwatering and the butter chicken is nothing like the red sauce you have seen in the past! The mains we had were Atari Paneer from borders of Pakistan and murgh mullah from 1857 Hyderabad! Really nice but we enjoyed apps more. Came here for a Friday night dinner. The place was buzzing with people. They have amazing drinks made from authentic south Asian herbs and spices. The really liked their Aslams Chicken and the haleem. The portion size for haleem is very small - wish they had a bigger portion option. Really wanted to rate this restaurant higher but the attentive service and nice ambiance does not make up for the truly bland food. The basket chaat had all the usual chutneys but none of the flavor. The small size of the Rumali roti could be forgiven if it wasn't so thick and dry. Atari paneer was just as flavorless. The texture of the paneer was good, however it isn't enough of a redeeming feature. The espresso martini was good but that's a standard menu item everywhere and I again did not taste any of the enhanced flavors the menu purported the drink was infused with. The vibe in here was great--I liked the train-station-y energy at the bar, and the service was attentive but casual; excellent without being overwhelming. The food was beautiful--the tables were a bit small for the size of the plates, but it tasted delicious. I like the way that the menu locates the dish in geography and in history; it made dining feel like a culinary and an educational experience.
