JD's Chippery is a bakery in the University Parks area that specializes in cookies, muffins, and....cherry limeade. Yes, I love ordering a big cherry limeade along with my cookies. It's what makes a visit to JD's Chippery so unique. Oh, their cookies are pretty darn good too. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - JD's Chippery is pretty small with hardly enough room for more than 10 people. Inside you'll find rows of cookies/muffins lined up and ready to be taken home. It smells like a bakery (good) and makes you want to buy the store. Beware though, parking can be quite limited along with the tight spaces. But other than that it has the makings of a great, local bakery. 1/2 Star. Service - The staff is great and helpful. You may need to jockey for position against some of the local high school kids that like to show up after school for a snack. But once you are helped, your order is promptly boxed and you are rung up. They used to be cash only but accept CC's over a certain amount. 1/2 Star. Food - The cookies here are fantastic. They are about 3 inches in diameter, nice and soft in the middle, and best when served warm. I think JD's Chippery has the best snicker doodle cookies in all of Dallas, and their chocolate chip cookies are a close second. But it's also hard to ignore their muffins. They are also very big, are nice and soft in the middle as well, and they carry seasonal flavors. If you're lucky enough to visit in the fall, you must get some pumpkin muffin which is made to be eaten with a nice, hot cup of coffee. Holy butter, Batman! These cookies are super buttery. I was gagging on the butter aftertaste for the next hour, even with milk to wash it down. Wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. Wifey and I stopped by on a Saturday and decided to try a cookie or two before committing to a dozen (or two). We got one milk chocolate chip and one oatmeal chocolate chip, along with a small milk. These cookies have an under-baked look and taste to them, which was sort of off-putting for me. And the aforementioned buttery-ness. After trying these, we realized we prefer cookies from Tiff's Treats, which are baked a little more and not as buttery. I am on a hunt to find the best cookies in DFW. So ofcourse I had to try this place. Well, I think the customer service is really nice and they ladies at the counter were sweet..... BUT, the cookie was just okay to good. It was good but nothing that made it outstanding. I tried the chocolate chip semi sweet, the chocolate chip with oatmeal, the chocolate peanut butter and they were all good enough. The cookies were soft but not chewy and they were kind of small. Tiff who? These cookies are delicious. All of them. They're crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Pure, warm yumminess. I had snickerdoodle, semi-sweet milk chocolate, oatmeal raisin, and white chocolate. All phenomenal. I honestly can't say that I liked one more than the others. Yum...these cookies taste like they're slightly under-baked, which is just how I like 'em. Slightly crisp on the outside, buttery/doughy on the inside. I'd bet there's a half-stick of butter in each cookie, in fact. You can taste it...and it tastes GOOOOOD. Side Note: It's a bakery. What did you expect, health food? The snickerdoodle...well, it was amazing, too, but there's not much to distinguish it from other snickerdoodles in terms of flavor (since they're all so buttery to begin with). I'll let you know how I like the oatmeal raisin. It'll be interesting to see how it tastes after about a half day in my car running around doing errands. The cost isn't too bad, I guess. I got 4 cookies for $3.25 (yeah, making them yourself is cheaper, but when you're out running errands and the craving hits...). And then I had to hold up the entire line because I had to write a check. I never have cash, and they don't take credit cards. Don't take credit cards?!? Shocker. This was the worst chocolate chip cookie I've ever had in my life. Kroger makes better cookies. Don't bother, get Tiff's or make your own. I make incredible cookies just using the tollhouse recipe and a few tricks of my own and I wish I had my own today. What a waste of calories, especially in the new year. JD's is classic Dallas like Reunion Tower or not using your turn signal on 75. I have been hitting up JD's since it was a special after school treat for getting good grades on a report card. The only thing that has changed is they now accept credit cards and got rid of the atm in the corner. My lifelong favorites are semi sweet and white chocolate. The chocolate peanut butter are also a crowd favorite but alas I have never tried cause I am allergic. If you are a first timer and don't know what to try, ask the ladies (or the one man) cause I swear the average tenure here is about 15 years. read more

The semi-sweet chocolate chip is what dreams are made of -- soft, gooey, and with the perfect chip to cookie ratio. Good luck not wrecking your diet. You walk in and you feel like you are in your Mom's kitchen: tacky wall-paper, silly figurines and antique-mall decorations, a couple chubby ladies behind the counter with aprons on, some bad color combinations and curtains. I get it, this place is about the cookies and not the decor. Bravo! When I was a kid I got cavities for two reasons: gummy bears and snicker doodle cookies. (Side note: what is a snicker doodle, technically? I still haven't figured that out.) So when I walked in and saw a snicker doodle I had to hark back to the good ole days and grab me one. You pay the pound for your cookies and note: BRING CASH. This joint doesn't accept my all-plastic lifestyle. Luckily I had a dollar on me, good for one cookie. The snicker doodle is light, buttery, fluffy, just crispy enough, a good size and has all the punch you want for $0.77. I'm a fan. read more

I got an oatmeal raisin and a peanut butter chocolate chip, and my guy got a white chocolate/macadamia I think. In addition, they had day old cookies (they were out) and day old muffins (they had cheese ones? interesting) for super cheap. I would definitely have been open to that option but I wasn't really in the mood for cheese muffins. The oatmeal raisin was disappointing. Sadly, I prefer the Grandma's oatmeal raisin cookies out of the vending machine at work. The white chocolate one was pretty dece but it's not really a variety I particularly enjoy. HOWEVER, the peanut butter chocolate chip was H-E-A-V-E-N!!! Heaven, I tell you! It was just the right amount of chocolatey, peanut buttery, rich, chewy goodness. I wished I had about a dozen to scarf down right then and there. I was really hoping Angela was going back in for freshly-baked snickerdoodles (they said it would be 10-15 minutes) so I could get more delicious peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, but she didn't, so I regretfully abstained. This cookie is a close second to my all time favorite of oatmeal chocolate chip at Tiff's Treats---but don't be jealous JD, I have room for lots of cookies in my tummy. Too bad you don't deliver. Whoever figured out that if you grind the seeds of that grass that's all wavy and golden in the fall and you really pound em until they turn into powder and then you add some water and maybe some fat of some kind and then you let it sit out in the open for a while and for some reason it gets all puffy and full of air (and maybe smells a little funky but also really good) and then after all that you put it into the fire and then you EAT IT BECAUSE IT'S SO WARM AND DELICIOUS, whoever did that -- way to go, because that was a really neat trick! And at J.D.'s, they've perfected a beautiful little sub-genre of that trick: Perfect muffins. Go for breakfast and get the ham-and-cheese muffin, and you will be warm and full and endorphin-laced all the way til lunch. About a year and a half ago, my wife took me to J D's Chippery. She's been a huge fan of the place since she was in the second grade. So finally, after hearing her rave about the place for years, we finally go in. My initial thoughts were, "Wow, this is a really small place with really small cookies." I had assumed that these cookies would be the size-of-your head cookies of the sort you see at the mall. Nope, they're about the size of the average cookie you make at home. I decided upon the white chocolate macadamia nut cookie. We get back in the car and drive off. I take my usual bite, which is almost half the cookie and immediate realize I had made a terrible mistake. Apparently, as soon as that cookie hit my taste buds, they sent a signal to my brain to release massive amounts of Oxytocin and Dopamine; I bet my pupils dialated. I chewed and savored that bite for as long as I could. Even my wife took notice and said, "Are you still working on that bite?" To which I answered, "Yes, apparently I made a mistake." She answered back with a lot of laughter. Sometimes my customers will come by my shop and give me a gift of these fabulous cookies for doing a really good job on one of their orders. Let me tell you right now, if more customers did this sort of thing...epecially with these freakin' cookies...customer service problems would be the thing of the past. "Hello! How are you? Nice weather hey? You look marvelous! Did you lose weight? (Give Me A Cookie!!!)" If I have to tell you by now that J D's Chippery's cookies are the best cookies I've ever tasted, then go back and read again...this time slower. read more

A lot of folks are into this Highland Park staple, but to me they are just "ok", or by Yelp's rating system, "Meh, I've experienced better." I really have no complaints about any of my JD's Chippery experiences other than the lack of parking, but that is a Snider Plaza problem in general. The staff is is friendly and efficient, the prices are 'ok", the the smells coming out of this place are wonderful...all making for a setting that you feel like you are going to get a great cookie, and then it is just ok. My favorite, and what i will still come here for is the Snickerdoodle cookie. They are really good. I have tried others at many places that do not measure up, but I honestly believe most people will like these. What may not far as well on the comparison chart however is the standard Chocolate Chip cookie and Oatmeal cookies. Those were nothing to write home about. read more
