We were in Durango for a couple of days sightseeing and on Saturday morning my wife asked me to go to the bakery. We got there about 8AM an I bought a selection of croissants, strudels and macaroons for them to eat. The courissants were as buttery, light and flakey as I've ever had. The macarons were amazing. The worst thing about the place. We'll we spent 10 days dieting before the road trip and this place ruined all that labor in an hour. read more

Went here for a later breakfast. The ambiance was nice with a French country bakery appeal. There is a bakery on one side that you can get delicious fresh pastries at and a restaurant/bar on the other side. A pianist was playing during out meal which was very pleasant. The food was pricey but the portions were decent size. I got the crab and asparagus crepe and the Man got the eggs Benedict. The food was delicious. For this bakery one should have the option of zero stars for quality and cleanliness but try to imagine all of what that might look like with the highest price on the earth for a plain croissant which is actually not a croissant but is a bread bun in the shape of what we have become used to believing is in fact a croissant and all for the extraordinary price of $9.90. Sorry JP but at least now I know why the bakery was empty on a beautiful sunny Friday morning. I found this place while on vacation in Durango, and was delighted to discover a seemingly-authentic French patisserie. Unfortunately, the baking doesn't match the ambience. I purchased 2 pain au chocolats and 1 croissant, and they were decidedly meh. Paris baking this is not. Nor is it even on par with French bakeries in larger US cities. I would forgive them this, but for the price. The 3 items came to $15. This outstrips prices in NY or SF. Definitely not worth it. read more

This was the perfect find for us in Durango, a great little breakfast place in Durango. The place is super cute inside with a brick fireplace, and nice bar on the other side, and a very French interior which we just loved to pieces. We arrived just in time to order off the breakfast menu, thank you very much. We ordered a breakfast croissant sandwich and the crab crepes. Both were pretty good. A pet peeve of the BF is lukewarm food, and this food was definitely not hot, just moderately warm which brings the food down quite a bit. Service was just okay, our waitress seemed to disappear quite a bit. The bonus was this cute little boy, white blond hair that walked around and refilled waters. He called me mamn twice and it made me giggle both times. He was my favorite part of breakfast. The exceptional items at Jean-Pierre are the croissants! For the trip back to Denver we got a butter croissant, a ham and cheese croissant, and an almond croissant. They are flaky, buttery and taste like a pastry cloud from heaven. So delicious you can't stop. If we were there longer I would have had one or more every day. Overall, breakfast was okay, croissants were out of this world perfection and this place is a perfect fit for Durango. read more

I have to be honest: this is way, way to expensive. Love the food, love the venue and love the waitresses (and men) but that's something you may expect for these prices. We ate here the last 3-4 times we were in Durango. Always a good stop for good food and for people watching. Luckily it was warm enough to have breakfast on the sidewalk. That alone is worth it. The missing star is because of the prices and the terrible coffee. A latte, for latte prices, is not just an ordinary cup of coffee with hot milk in it, served cold. read more

This review is for the bakery. We had seen the bakery on a walk and after dinner at a different location stopped by for a desert and something to take back to the room for a snack with coffee before bed. We were there after 7:00pm and the selection I am sure was not as good as if we had been there earlier but there was plenty to choose from. Not being able to make a choice we asked the lady behind the counter for recommendations. After asking a few questions she recommended a chocolate bar made of layers of pastry and chocolate. Sorry forgot the name, a lemon tart and a shortbread cookie my wife picked out. Sitting outside we had half cookie each, half the lemon tart and I a quarter of the chocolate bar. The lemon tart was good but would try something else next time. Nothing wrong just I am not that fond of lemon. The chocolate bar was extremely good and I was happy I saved some for later with coffee. My wife maces over 4000 cookies during Christmas to make over 50 cookie trays for family, friends and our children's friends. That was the primary reason to try the shortbread cookie. It was shortbread with pecans and a drop of chocolate on top. Great cookie. This year this cookie will be in the mix. Price wise yes the pastry is what some would call expensive. We expected that to be so when we went in. If you travel the price we paid was no more than anywhere else. Happy eating. read more

Best Croissants I've ever had in US, I ate one for Breakfast when we stumbled upon your shop in CO. Seriously, I could of ate 3 of them! Your shop was walking distance from our hotel. The staff was nice, the love piano is a nice touch. My hollandaise sauce was split, which is something I'd expect a French restaurant to absolutely nail. The fruit crepes had a bunch of melon in them, which to me is a cheap way to fill a crepe. The potatoes were cold. So, again not terrible, but not great. If atmosphere is more important than taste and price isn't super important, it may just be your spot. read more

We stopped in Durango after leaving Silverton for breakfast. This place was so yummy!! They had fresh baked croissants and all kinds of French pastries. Our group had eggs Benedict served on croissants and French toast along with the pastries. Soooo flaky and buttery. Just divine. My husband explained the French toast had a crispy crust along with the creamy center the way French toast should be. He didn't even mind the price . . . Too much. Lol! Saw the little bakery while wondering on the street and finally got a chance to try it. Very sweet service. Had the Strawberry Napoleon, REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD! My philosophy is, you use real whip, you win. Everything was just right, and the desert was not intensely sweet either. However, this place lose one star due to coffee. I'm sorry, I am expecting awesome coffee instead of caffeinated water. While on vacation in Colorado my family and I stopped here for some desserts. I was disappointed in the selection as there was not much variety. I got a dessert that I don't remember the name of, but it was 2 meringues stuck together with chocolate ganache topped with whipped cream and cocoa powder. It was delicious! I would highly recommend it! The sand tarts were good as well. I was disappointed in the flan, but it may be how French flan tastes. It had a burned sugar flavor that was very overpowering. At first glance, Jean Pierre is the perfect French bakery-Parisian style pastries, homemade jams and jellies, homemade baguettes,espresso...the list goes on. When I studied abroad in Europe I had over 120 pastries in the semester. Yes, I counted! :) Anyway, I have had my fair share of Parisian pastries. The ones on display at Jean Pierre looked sad. What do I mean by sad? They were dry looking, crumbling on the sides, and some of the fruit ones looked lackluster. We decided not to purchase any pastries. Instead we purchased 3 bread pastries. One croissant, one apricot and almond croissant, and one apricot style strudel. The almond apricot croissant is a 3/5. It was not very flakey. The butter croissant was also a 3/5. It lacked flakiness. The apricot style strudel had 2 apricots at either end! Perhaps we should have asked the quantity of apricots in the strudel but we assumed there was going to be more. We waited and waited and finally went next door to eat. The restaurant is almost completely empty - maybe two tables with two people at each table. The one couple we saw there warned us that after we did get a table, they were going to take a really long time to bring our food. Slooooww service. Not worth the price. We have been to Jean-Pierre's Bakery many times, but this last time makes me think we won't return. The service was awful and the food was extremely expensive for what it was. A friend visiting Durango ordered the brioche french toast and what came out was comical. It looked like four depressingly thinned-down slices of Wonder bread, no powdered sugar, no maple syrup and the smallest portion of sad-looking fruit I have ever seen. His wife graciously gave him half of her omelette to eat. My husband ordered the eggs benedict for $20! and one of his eggs was practically raw. If we had ever seen our waitress, maybe we could have complained. The fresh squeezed orange juice was $7 a glass. My croissant sandwich was fine, nothing to write home about for $16! The pastries are generally good, but also very overpriced. There are better quality, more affordable places in town. read more
