While wandering downtown Durango, we happened upon this shop. this was an absolute treat. My daughter and I came in right when a gentleman was explaining what all the chocolates were in the case. We each selected one and got one for my husband. The perfect choice for my husband was The New York Basin, it is inspired by a Manhattan cocktail with a whisky soaked cherry inside. I had a dark chocolate salted caramel. Their handmade caramel has local honey, covered in dark chocolate and topped with sea salt, so tasty! My daughter chose The Texas Truffle, handmade fudge covered in milk chocolate. It even had sparkly sprinkles. I forgot to take a picture of the chocolate case, so I popped back in for a quick pic and the gentleman behind the counter said he knew I would be back. What a fun find! We were looking for something sweet that wasn't ice cream, and the Animas Chocolate Company sure did deliver! We walked in and were promptly greeted with a smile and a friendly hello. When I explained that we'd never been in before and asked a question about the menu, the barista (?) kindly explained the listings and then offered samples for our whole family. We ended up ordering the Mexican hot chocolate (which was rich and luscious, with only a hint of spice because I'd asked the bartender to make it kid-friendly) and an olde fashioned (which came with a blood orange truffle and I thought the drink would also be hot chocolate based, but Reader--it was NOT.) There's plenty of seating options (and the swivel chairs are quite fun), plus a glass door in the back to peek into their chocolate production process. My kids and I enjoyed our visit here, and of course the hot chocolate i(made with real chocolate, not cocoa powder) is really delicious. This is not to be mistaken for the European sipping chocolate, which is the drink to order. It comes with a biscotti and free refill. This might be the nicest and best decorated coffee shop I have ever been too. The only thing that makes it better is the friendly service we received from all of the workers. Everyone was friendly and well informed of the coffee and chocolate they offered. You can even see them make their chocolate delights in the back of the store. Oh and I forgot they serve fresh and delicious coffee! Sadly we found this shop on our last day in town. If not we would have been back everyday we were in town!! As a huge chocolate lover, Animas Chocolate Company was a must when passing through Durango. The workers were so friendly and from the moment we walked in we felt welcome. They took the time to walk us through each truffle in detail and gave us plenty of space to peruse the store looking at all the other goodies. As I decided on what goodies to take home, my boyfriend enjoyed an espresso at the bar. Very eager to try my truffles I did not snap a pic of the beautifully wrapped box, but will say each one tasted just as good as it looked! So We bought an assortment of truffles, hot coco and a coffee. Sure it's pricey but you get what you pay for. The assortment you see here was $55 and so far- all amazing. The best part, the staff is helpful and very friendly which isn't something I'd describe for all of Durango so the staff really made a difference and boosted our overall experience. This is a great relaxing spot, upscale, had more of a winery vibe. My kids were warmly welcomed, but it felt like a great adult hangout to me. Beautiful renovation of this building. The spicy hot chocolate was simply amazing, love that little spicy kick at the bottom. The croissants are a *requirement.* Lots of helpful employees here, was an amazing experience. The truffles looked awesome but we opted for the "last chance" bin for 50% off to give the kids. Was pretty good, but was leftover from Halloween. I'm sure it's way better fresh, but we were fine with it. One thing I wasn't a fan of, this is just me, the slogan "lose your soul" is pretty intense...and did it used to be a brothel? Some of the items on the menu were "harlot" and "madame" - I found it to be in bad taste. Prostitution is a tragedy, not something to be taken lightly and commemorate on a menu. I visited Animas Coffee & Chocolate while on a quick trip to Durango with my husband and puppy. We were strolling along the downtown area and I was immediately pulled in by the name. Coffee and chocolate? How can you go wrong? Well, in this situation you cannot. We went in and they immediately offered me a complimentary taste of their hot chocolate which, is so delicious. They have an incredible menu of both hot and iced drinks. I don't know how one could ever choose, they all looked amazing. They also have homemade fudge, truffles, hot chocolate mix, and more! When you walk to the back you can actually see them making everything. Everyone is so incredibly kind here and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Hubby and I were on our anniversary adventure and were spending one of our final days in Durango, Co. We had just walked all over town all day and came across this little jewel of a shop. Ever since I discovered Jin Ju Chocolates here in town, I like to seek out these crafty chocolate shops while traveling. Upon entering we were warmly greeted by the owners spouse, Mr. Snider and another young man. The shop itself is not big but there is a separate section where you can sit and eat or drink some of the chocolates you purchase. We were asked if we would like to try some Smelter. Smelter is their version of hot chocolate and it did not disappoint. I had to buy some to bring home. The bag is filled with nice size chunks of chocolate and you fill your cup with the amount you want in your cup. Pour hot or warm milk over the chocolate and it melts into a very tasty cup of hot chocolate. I had to have two cups while I was in the store. This company is dedicated to creating high quality and handcrafted chocolates. They feature truffles, chocolate bars (both milk and dark), the delicious Smelter, fudge, and some of their chocolate beans come as far away as Bolivia and Belize. We were happy that we had an opportunity to sample some really amazing chocolates. The owner was very informative about his product and helpful when it came to making our selection. Outside of purchasing the Smelter, we also bought some bars and truffles. Money well spent I would say. I have now ran out of my bag of Smelter, but happy to know that I can order online! We went to Durango last October and we had so much fun! After mountain biking, and soaking in the hot springs, we spent a little time on Main St. and this place just beckoned us in after looking in the bookstore. I am a candy maker and pastry chef, I love chocolate and I appreciate people who are doing it right. I can say you are in good hands here. As soon as we walked in, we were handed a sample of drinking chocolate in warm espresso sized porcelain cups. The space was beautiful and warm with hardwood floors and thoughtful displays. Their chocolate truffle selection was incredible and diverse. I loved the way they rated the different levels for different sensabilities. My husband got a bandito mocha and I opted for an unsweetened chocolate drink. We were both very happy with our choices. We got a small box of truffles and loved the snakebite, the crazy woman creek, cowboy coffee, and the colorado cache. We ended up ordering a gift for my MIL online a month later and she absolutely loved it. We will definitely be going back there. read more

Must make too much money that they don't have to be open often! Closed early on a Saturday and Sunday durning a holiday weekend. I understand wanting to provide staff with an appreciation day but to pick a holiday weekend is just a poor business choice.
