We loved our flavorful lunch so much on 7/12/26 that we returned the next morning for breakfast! The curry chicken salad on a pita was the best chicken salad I've ever tasted! My husband had a beef stir fry in a wrap, that was also delicious! The sweet potato fries and straight cut fries were so good it's hard for me to say which was better! Be sure to try the Watergate cake, so good with pistachio frosting. We were so full from lunch so had to take the cake to go. This will be our go to place when we are in the Dells/Baraboo area! read more

The greeting from the young lady at the front counter was non existent. She never smiled or said good morning or even hello. She pointed toward the back of the restaurant and said "down there on the left" As we walked that way( no escort, no menus) my husband said that he would just like to leave because he certainly didn't feel welcome. We went back to the counter and I told the young lady that we were not going to be staying and she just said "that's fine" and I said "if you had even said good morning or hello to us or had been cordial, we would've been happy to give our business here. I love coming into Jen's Alpine Cafe for breakfast! I had an apartment above this place when I first moved to Baraboo 4+ years ago and used to frequently stop by just by myself for a tasty start to my morning. The staff are so sweet and friendly, they'd stop and chat with me while I was waiting for my food. Large menu, sizeable portions and very delicious food at extremely reasonable prices! The atmosphere is almost "frozen in time", original to downtown Baraboo without looking dated, very lovely and peaceful. Beautiful wood and original tin, patterned, very tall ceiling. It doesn't look like much walking by, compared to all of the trendy-exterior or touristy places in town, but I've found a lot of the food much better and far less greasy. First off let me say that Baraboo is a surprisingly diverse and interesting place that I would like to explore more. One of the highlights of this trip was lunch at Jen's . A warm and inviting place that was busy but not overly packed. The server was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. The food was really fresh and tasty. They advertise their soup and they are right to do so. My wife had the butternut squash soup which I tried and thought it was very good. Nice consistency and flavor. She had the bog burger that she was quite impressed with commenting on the amazing combination of flavors. I had the french dip with sweet potato fries.The meat was flavorful and tender and served on a cibatta roll. It was nice not to feel like I overate. The sweet potato fries were the best I have ever had. Hot, crisp fantastic. So the next time I am in Baraboo I know where to go for lunch. read more

We were visiting from out of town and looking for a place that could accommodate my food allergies. We tried a few places with no luck. When we called Jen's, we were told to just come in and they would help us figure out what I could eat. When we did, the staff was friendly, helpful, kind, and worked with me to get me a safe, delicious meal. It was such a positive and encouraging experience. Thank you! My first time visiting. First time I have ever seen Valentines Day decorations up along with Christmas Decorations still up. Service was slow though we were quickly greeted and warned "I'll be with you as soon as I can". Ordered the special Pastrami sandwich and chili, both were OK. I had a Diet Coke and asked for a refill when the food came and once again was told "sure as soon as I can". Apparently that window of opportunity never occurred. I guess I was expecting more after living here for years and hearing great things all the time. Still I will be back sometime, I love eating local. read more

I had the working man (woman's) meal. 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, 2 pancakes and hash browns. Prepared perfectly and a nice meal before a 6 hour drive home. I was too hungry and forgot the picture. This is such a unique restaurant, it uses church pews for seating. The food is all homemade and BREAKFAST all day!! Their breakfast is our favorite in Baraboo. It is a small owner business and the service is usually very good. I know there was a time or two when an employee left without notice and they were short handed that took a long while. Otherwise is it very good and decent. This is where people in Baraboo take their families on Sunday brunch, so it'll be packed! The menu has tons of options and the deserts are all homemade as well! This is my breakfast or lunch stop anytime I am in Baraboo. Jen seems to always be there, this is a hard-working restaurant. The salads are great, but I tend to steer more to the daily specials and include a soup as a side dish. The soups our house made as is everything else this is comfort food at its best. Yesterday's trip was during the fall art tour, and the place was slammed with customers, and dealing with the real recent short staff issues, but the service and speed was everything it is when you are one of very few customers in the place. I've been coming here since I was a little girl while my mother and grandmother would have coffee. I love the old wooden booths and the mirrors. Big mugs of coffee. Always excellent food. Our waitress, Amanda, must have been newer... worded things a little rough, used a plate of food to shove things out of her way to make room for plates.. only brought me a coffee warm up just before bringing our bill. But that's the first time I've ever had a server like that. I ordered a sausage and cheddar omlette and that looked a little sad but it was good, filled me up :) read more

Great spot for breakfast. Jens does excellent soup and pies that make you want to skip the meal but breakfast is where they shine. The Alpine's gorgeous quarter-sawn oak booths and small town flavor make it a great spot to visit if you're looking for breakfast after a night camping at Devil's lake. Bad service, over priced and small portions. Ordered 2 eggs scrambled and what came out looked like 1 egg scrambled and burnt. Asked the server if this was 2 eggs scrambled and she sneered at me "well yeah". Ok then. Asked for a small side of gravey, and explained that I just wanted a small portion like asking for a side of ranch. Was charged. $2 for it. Pancakes and sausage were good that's why they get 2 stars instead of 1. Had to update review as an hour after eating my husband threw up his pancakes and sausage. Did not sit well in his stomach. Had a great lunch here on a Monday afternoon. I started with the pumpkin and black bean soup, which was surprisingly delicious. The spoonful of chicken barley soup I tried was really good, too. My Italian sausage sandwich special came with apple-raisin coleslaw and both were very tasty. The ciabatta roll on which the sandwich was served was soft and puffy, unlike any ciabatta I'd previously had, but it was good nonetheless. After all that food I was way too full for dessert, which was too bad because the pies looked great. Service was a little poky but very friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy. I can see how the booths might be uncomfortable for some, but honestly if my husband and I could get in and out without incident, probably 95% of the population can too. read more

Right in the heart of downtown, this is a quindcental small town mom-n-pop place. The decor is a refurbished sort, with old touches, such as the textured celing and lights that go off to inform the waitresses that thier food is up. I wish I could have reported on more of the menu, however everyone at my table stoped on the inside page and opted for Breakfast anytime. Everyone went for Biscuits and Gravy, or some variation on it. I suppose since the place is named a soup kitchen we should have tried it. Oh well. read more

I wasn't that impressed with this place. We stopped in for a late lunch while shopping in B-boo. I thought the service was sub-par and the food was not a good value for the price. I liked the turn of the century decor with the old circus pictures on the walls, but there needs to be something done about the booths. They look like old church pews and I am sure they are originals, but there just isn't enough room to maneuver. I had trouble getting in and out. Once I was sitting I didn't have any place to put my feet, my knees kept hitting the bottom of the table, and the table was digging into my ribs if I slouched. I am 6'2" and 200 lbs so I am sure there are other people who have more trouble than I did. The food was decent, but not for the prices they are charging. At those prices I wanted a taste explosion...I got a small 'poof'. After our food was delivered I never got the refill of coffee that I requested. In fact the server never returned. I think they smelled the FIB on me. read more

Stopped here for a late lunch after seeing the Forevertron Sculpture Park. The place specifically bills itself as a soup specialist, and it's easy to see why--the tomato florentine and the pea soup with sausage were both delicious, and accompanied by a nice little bread basket. My sandwich, however, the turkey & broccoli, was disappointing. The menu said it came with "cheddar," but it was an extremely mild one--no bite to it at all. The turkey was very moist, which I appreciated, but overall it was a bit on the salty side and after bringing out my water initially, the waitress never refilled it--I was out of water halfway through the meal and didn't see her again until it was obvious that both our plates were completely empty. The place was nearly empty, too, so it's not like she was busy with other customers. I would go there again if I were in the area, but I don't know how many times a year I'll be going to see the Forevertron. In general, it looks like it might be better to stick with their soups or breakfast items, to judge from other reviews. Hours are 6am-3pm seven days a week. read more

After being in the Wisconsin Dells area for the week this was one of my favorite places. When we travel we like to find mom and pop places to support. This one was perfect. The decor was unique, with hand crafted oak booths and the service was homey, courteous and efficient. Even long-time customers entered into the conversation when we were asking about local attractions. Breakfast proportion were ample and the the best price around. The maple pumpkin pie was homemade and the best I've had since my sister's at Thanksgiving. read more

I really wanted to like this place but was super disappointed!!!! Starting with walking into the restaurant, my family & I stood there for 20 minutes with no acknowledgment. Zero. No greeting even to say it would be a few minutes. Very understaffed and IMO it's rude to not greet people. We finally asked someone how long it would be and we were seated. I appreciate their Covid safety measures but that's where it ends. We ordered eggs, pancakes, a chicken sandwich very basic food. The coffee was beyond awful. Tasted like it was brewed through an old gym sock. This looked like an old school quaint restaurant with great food but fell way short. Best of luck but we won't be back. read more

My wife and I like going to small mom and pop restaurants. When on a shopping trip to Baraboo we found this place. A clean restaurant with nice atmosphere and friendly service. We both enjoyed our lunch. I had the grilled turkey, broccoli and cheese sandwich and my wife had a grilled turkey sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries. The food was both delicious and plentiful. The waitress was friendly and maybe a little slow. We weren't in a hurry so we weren't paying attention to the time. We will definitely go back when we're in Baraboo again. read more

While the service was excellent (they said we would have to wait 20 minutes for our food and it arrived earlier than that!) the food was not the greatest. I ordered the Mac and cheese while my boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito and the French onion soup. The Mac and cheese was pretty tasteless and my boyfriend also thought the burrito lacked flavor. The French onion soup had more broth and pieces of bread than actual onion flavor and the piece of bread given to us on the side, unfortunately, had mold on it. While the atmosphere of the restaurant was cute and quaint in this small town, we would not go back for the food. read more
