So far, I have not been disappointed by any of them. I especially wanted to highlight the Vegan Meatball Sandwich. If I had not known it was vegan, I would not have guessed it. The meatballs had great flavor and texture, and the sandwich was incredibly satisfying. The bread was one of my favorite parts. It was soft on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside, and had a subtle sweetness that perfectly balanced the savory ingredients. I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I also tried the BBQ Chicken Sandwich. Barbecue chicken is not usually something I order, but I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised. It was flavorful, well balanced, and definitely something I would order again. I also want to mention that Ike's does a great job catering for large groups. We have used them for work events, and the ordering process was easy, the food arrived on time, and everything was well organized. The delivery option makes it especially convenient when feeding a larger group. Ike's continues to impress me with the quality, variety, and consistency of their sandwiches. Whether you are grabbing lunch for yourself, dining with family, or ordering for a group, they are a great choice.

I read the Yelp reviews before coming (more on this later). I only had the traditional bahn mi with three kinds of pork, including sliced and pate. The bahn mi was as it should be, a thinner sandwich bread, similar to a baguette but skinnier, with lightly pickled daikon and carrot, a cucumber, cilantro, and jalapeno. It was delicious. Which brings me to the Yelp reviews. A number of them are complaining that the bread isn't as large as a traditional French baguette. This is because a bahn mi doesn't traditionally have a larger sized baguette. A traditional bahn mi bread is inspired by a French baguette, because the sandwich is a fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisines, since the French colonized Vietnam and influenced some of their food and architecture. But it isn't traditionally as thick as a baguette, and is made of a mix of wheat and rice flour. The owner happened to be typing on his laptop and I talked to him about the bread. It is made in house, by him. It is made thin, but doesn't have rice flour. I was frankly grateful that it wasn't a normal sized baguette, because that would have scraped up my mouth and required having a lot more toppings to balance the ingredients with the bread, making a much larger sandwich than I would want to eat. In the US, a restaurant owner making a bahn mi often faces a choice between making their own bread in house, having a local bakery make it for them, or buying from a bakery that already makes French baguettes. So what people are used to eating isn't authentic, but is a cost-saving tradeoff made by using a regular French baguette, usually the cheapest of the options. So before you complain about the shape and size of the bread, please understand that this is closer to the real deal than you are used to and not a defect of the bahn mi bread served in this restaurant, despite being named "Baguette House". The rest of the sandwich is open to criticism and I agree with some that the pickled veg could have used more vinegar, but the bread was well-made, crunchy crispy outside, with a soft interior. Delish.

I usually go for the chicken or ribeye beef bánh mì, and the portions are just right--not too much, not too little. The bread is made fresh daily, which really makes a difference. I also appreciate that there's some flexibility with customization if you're not a fan of certain traditional garnishes or want to add extras. Their Vietnamese and Thai dishes are consistently good as well--I tend to stick with their curry, which never disappoints. On this visit, I stopped by for Vietnamese iced coffee and some baked goods. I tried the shortbread cookies; they weren't soft like I had hoped (their lemon cookies are soft and delicious- my husband had it from here before), but that's pretty typical for shortbread. The iced Vietnamese coffee is one of my favorites here--perfectly balanced, not overly sweet and not too bitter. The café has a nice setup with a decent amount of seating--great if you want to stop in for coffee or sit down and enjoy a meal with family. The staff are always friendly!

Disappointing portions despite decent flavor. This visit felt like a tale of two dishes. 2 stars…read more= It could have been better, and it definitely could have been better. I ordered to go. On the positive side, the Pork Bahn Mi was pretty good. The bread was fresh and chewy, the veggies were tasty, and the pork had good flavor. That said, the meat portion was noticeably light. It wasn't terrible, but a few more pieces of pork would have gone a long way. The real letdown was the Chicken Pad Thai my friend ordered. Pad Thai typically runs anywhere from $13-$19 or more around town, and this place caught my attention by pricing it at the low end ($13). Unfortunately, once you opened the to-go container, it was clear why. The portion was shockingly small--maybe 25% of the container filled--and there was barely any chicken. It honestly looked like a kid-sized portion. I have actually seen this trend with other places where you get less when you order to go. At the store I inspected the order and noticed this, so I mentioned it to the staff and was met with a shrug and silence. When I brought it to my friend (who's petite and loves pad thai), even she immediately asked, "Where's the meat?" She finished it and was still hungry--and that's never happened as she eats Chicken Pad Thai weekly. She confirmed with me that she was not pregnant (lol) so I ended up sharing my sandwich with her. She said it tasted fine, but nothing special, and definitely not worth $13. While the Bahn Mi was solid, the overall experience screamed shrinkflation. The lower price point felt like a bait-and-switch once you see the portion size. We've had Chicken Pad Thai at places like Sip Saam, 888, 1618, and others for slightly more money, but with far more food and chicken. We enjoy trying new spots, but this was a one-and-done for both of us. Saving a few ounces of noodles and a couple pieces of chicken might minimally help costs in the short term, but it hurts customer trust and satisfaction long term. Fair portions matter just as much as flavor--and unfortunately, this place missed that balance. The lack of response when I mentioned the small portion size made me feel dismissed as a customer which made the experience worse. Priorities, I guess.

Okay Cuban Food in Pflugerville…read more Tropicana sets the standard for Cuban food in this town. I have not been to Havana on South Congress in years. Back in the day, Havana impressed as well. What about Chicho's? It won't thrill you. It won't kill you. * * * a) The menu at Chicho's is small. The menu at Tropicana is infinite. Chicho's is mostly a sandwich place. But they have some plates. Tropicana has everything. b) Servings at Chicho's are small. Small servings? At a Cuban restaurant? Yes - Miami has some Cuban restaurants with small servings too. But Cuban is where you often go when you are looking for some serious bellybusting. Havana Harry's is the model for ... your appetizer, your main course and your dessert are EACH as filling as a Thanksgiving Dinner. That is three Thanksgiving Dinners. The pork chop I got at Chicho's was cut thin. How thin was your pork chop, Samuel C? Funny you should ask, Yelp Reader. It was maybe a thickness of three on a delicatessen slicer. Probably closer to two. It was like eating a slice of ham out of an Oscar Mayer ham for little kids's lunch pack. It was nicely sauteed and had a sweet sauce. (Shades of the Oscar Mayer ham again). I ate my ration. There was an ice cream scoop's worth of congris. It was first rate congris ... the best thing on the plate. I was sad when my ice cream scoop's worth was gone. There were four maduros which counts as a legal but unimpressive serving. They were standard. There was a miniscoop of salad - but you know the salad you get as a side garnish in Mexican and Cuban restaurants. You don't eat it and it is no loss. * * * The other downside was the strawberry juice drink con leche. It was a standard industrialized strawberry pulp pack for drinks Which is par for the course when you order these things. Either something was funny with the strawberry pulp or something was wrong with the milk. 85 percent of the sips were okay. 15 percent were - wait a minute - something is wrong. The wrongness was inconsistent enough that I did not want to complain to management. But the more I reflect on it - the more I am sure I would not order another juice drink for a beverage. * * * Overall, my basic dishes were good enough that I could see eating there again if I happened to be in the neighborhood. But Pflugerville is full of amazing places ... And there is some great Yelp reviewing to be done in that town. And if I am hungering for Cuban ... there is always Tropicana. * * * Actually ... If I am hungering for Cuban ... There is always Miami. Eat at the best Cuban places in Miami And you will be so happy you will never want to eat again. Plus you will be so full it will be physically impossible for you to eat again. Ever. * * * No Cuban restaurant in Austin takes you to that extreme of happiness. But Tropicana does a good job of getting you 2/3 of the way there.
