By the time it was my turn, there was three old pieces of bacon sitting in the bin and hardly any lettuce at 4:30. They should've refilled it knowing that it was low. This is the worst ever been to I eat there frequently at other local locations. Everything is always full and fresh with all the employees that were working there. I'm surprised they weren't better equipped to keep the bins full. I agree with the other one star reviews about customer service slow and not trained like the one by home goods Rio Drive employees they all smile & say welcome in not to mention bins of bacon & veggies always full & fresh. They do a good job with customer service training. And they have delicious subs. I was not feeling awesome when I came in since my husband had been admitted to Zion Kaiser for post surgery "complications." Staying in a hospital is not restful or at all glamorous, and there's only so much cafeteria food you can eat. So I looked up on Yelp what lunch options were close by. Jersey Mikes has fresh subs made to order, perfect. Entering the store, this super cheerful supervisor guy greeted me. We ordered sandwiches through DoorDash from this shop, after taking a few bits I noticed and extremely LONG black/brown hair in one half of my sandwich. A couple of weeks ago, my fiancée brought me half of a turkey sandwich from here that she had gotten for lunch. I don't know if I was just hungry or what, but that was one good sandwich. Recently we went back, and I got a super size sub. I like how it is like Subway where you can ask for which veggies and condiments that you want, and the amounts as well. But the quality of all the ingredients seem to be much better than Subway's. I guess there is a reason why Subway could offer 5 dollar footlongs for so long. I really like Jersey Mike's. This location could be great if it wasn't so inconsistent. Sometimes, the place is sparkling clean and the employees are friendly. The sandwiches are great, so it's fantastic. Those times are five stars. Other times, the food prep stations are mess and employees are unfriendly. Someone's dry turkey sandwich gets plopped down right on top of the remnants of the tuna sandwich that was made last. Employees are distracted with other tasks and you have to tell them your order several times because they aren't really listening. There are a lot of businesses in the area, including a large hospital, so my guess is everything depends on whether they have some big orders to work on. My last visit proved this out. I walked in just after 10am (they open at 9) and was rudely greeted with a chorus of "We're closed!" from the employees. The doors were open, it was during posted business hours, and employees were making sandwiches. What's going on? The employees refused to take my order without any explanation other than, "We're closed." As I walked out, I saw a printed sign on the door that said the dining room was closed until 11:30 and they were open for online and pickup orders only. Rather than bother going online, I just went to a competitor. My guess is they got a large order, so they decided to turn business away until they could get it done. Is it a problem that when I call Jersey Mike's and start my order, they sometimes interrupt me to ask, "Is this Omar?" and then, "Will this be your usual?" I mean, really, should one be known so intimately by one's local sub shop? ********** My usual order is a regular #17 (cheese steak /peppers /grilled onion) on white, with special requests: - Add mushrooms; - Substitute provolone for white American (what even is that?); - Cook all vegetables down until they're mushy; - Mix cheese in with cooked vegetables, instead of laying it on top of the sandwich where it can stick to the paper. The meat is tender, juicy and flavorful and the fresh-baked roll doesn't melt as the juice hits it. This sandwich is a mouthful of oh-my-goodness. Sometimes I switch things up with something simpler: a #13 "Original Italian" hoagie, which includes provolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami and pepperoni. I get it dressed "Mike's Way", with with onions, lettuce, tomato, vinegar, oil and Italian herbs. The #13 holds up throughout the day. If I know I'm not going to eat it until evening, I'll get the "juice" on the side. Oh, and when I get it home, I add Tabasco, because Jersey Mike's doesn't. Now, let's talk about that roll: Jersey Mike's doesn't use the hyped-to-death Amoroso rolls that other shops have shipped to San Diego from Philadelphia, and they don't have to; their long-time supplier in New Jersey provides the bread that each shop bakes in-house. Jersey Mike's rolls offer a nice chew and a strong "hinge" to support the meats and dressings you choose. The rolls are good, and I'm always hungry for good. ********** Jersey Mike's sandwiches would be just average in Philly or downashore, but in San Diego, they're better than that. And yes, I know there are other, better places for subs in the County, but they're not three miles from my house, they don't deliver to me, and they're spendy. My sandwich choices are tasty and filling, and Jersey Mike's sells them at a fair price. What's more, by all outward appearances, the people making my food are happy that I'm there. And as a bonus, if you watch the paper or download their app, the place offers two-for-one and other discount coupons. I usually come here when I get a sandwich craving because 1) it's walking distance from work 2) we get a discount, allowing me to actually afford to eat here. My favorite is the Ham and Provolone as a mini. There is one lady that works here and I am bummed when she is not working that day because she makes the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life! I stopped in for a quick sandwich, in between jobs. I was not in a hurry, but I do like speedy service. The restaurant had about 5 employees present, so I expected speedy service. A family of three walked in before me and were helped quickly. The staff members were very friendly and helpful. During my order, the staff members were speaking to each other a lot, which did take away from the speed in which my order was completed. (In my last review or a Jersey Mikes in Murrieta, the staff member talked to me, but continued working in a speedy manner). The staff members at this location stopped working, turned and faced each other and were talking about non-business related topics. If you are gonna talk to each other, it needs to be about the meal being worked on or at least don't stop working while you are preparing a customer's meal. This was constructive criticism, not necessarily a complaint. Overall, the service was good, but could have been quicker. Most people get 30- 60 minutes for lunch. So they don't have time to be waiting on the staff members to finish their personal conversations. There was a "not so good" odor in the store, towards the beginning of the line, closer to where you pick your bread. It wasn't foul, just not so good. It eased up as I got closer to the register. My overall experience was good, not great. The sandwich itself.... Was great!! It was the meatiest and cheesiest sandwich I have ever eaten from Jersey Mikes. The sandwich was the bomb. I've got to give these guys five stars for a great first time dining experience at this location. And they had plenty of staff there to help customer so there was almost no line even at noon. The place was clean and fully stocked with all the condiments necessary for a great sub. I ordered a turkey avocado bacon sub with extra cheese and got it toasted... Yum! I even forgot to add a couple ingredients & at the end and they were happy to add them to my sandwich with a smile. Since it was my first time there, I even got a free first the big chocolate chip cookie for dessert.
