The parking lot off of busy Roosevelt Rd. was poorly designed, and the traffic does not flow well between the gym, Jewel and the next strip mall with Staples. Otherwise, it is a decent grocery store, about two miles from my home so I have walked there on occasion. I have my prescriptions filled there, and the pharmacy staff has always been courteous. Sometimes, they are very busy. The produce is good, and when it is in season or on sale is a good deal. The milk is a good price. Otherwise, the Jewel can be rather pricey. Eggs, sausage, and bacon are overpriced. I dislike the digital coupons because they force us to be on our cellphones even more than usual. I'm writing this review after several disappointing shopping trips to the Jewel Osco at 599 E Roosevelt Rd, Glen Ellyn, IL store and an interaction with a Store Manager named Danny, which unfortunately reflects ongoing issues at this location over the past several months. 1. Chronic Lack of Bagging Support For more than three months, I, along with a host of others I have witnessed, have had to bag our own groceries during visits when the front is overwhelmed by more than 2 lines. There is consistently no one available to assist the cashier, or there is a single person attempting to cover multiple lanes. This isn't an occasional staffing hiccup--it has become the norm. 2. Online Order Shoppers Blocking Aisles Another recurring issue is the number of employees shopping for online orders. Their large gray carts are frequently left in the middle of aisles or in the break in the isles at the end caps causing a serious chokepoint, rather than off to the side, creating obstacles and making it difficult for in‑store customers to navigate. Many times, it feels more like an obstacle course rather than a grocery store. 3. Interaction With Assistant Manager Danny When I asked to speak with a manager to share these concerns, Danny initially acknowledged that the store could do better about calling staff up to the front. However, the conversation quickly shifted in an unhelpful direction. Despite never suggesting that online shopping be eliminated, he repeatedly insisted that "this is the way of things now" and emphasized that online orders weren't going away. My actual point--that in‑store customers should not be inconvenienced by poor cart placement or lack of bagging support--was never meaningfully addressed. When I raised the concern that it seemed like the store prioritized online orders over the customers physically shopping in the store (who often spend more per visit), he offered nothing more than a shrug and a half‑smile. That response made it clear that customer experience and retention were not priorities in this discussion. Bottom Line I've been a long‑time Jewel‑Osco customer, but the combination of ongoing operational issues and the dismissive attitude from management has made shopping here increasingly frustrating. I hope the company takes these concerns seriously, because the current approach is pushing loyal in‑store customers away. read more

This Jewel-Osco located on Roosevelt Rd in Glen Ellyn has the best of both worlds. It's a one-stop shop for fresh produce, prime and choice meats, lunchmeats, and a wide selection of dairy products. They also carry cleaning supplies and pet products. Osco carries a good selection of make-up, personal hygiene and school/business supplies. Prescriptions are filled correctly and promptly, and all of the pharmacy staff are helpful when one's own shelf scan doesn't turn up the desired product. The other advantage is that this store is not so large that it is hard to find help and products. I find that a huge plus - the pharmacy isn't so far away that a last minute run will probably make it before they close! Oh, and they have lovely scented flowers. read more

They are prejudice! They try to hide it. I was skipped over while trying to buy something from the deli dept. All of the whites were waited in first. The women back there from the oldest to the youngest looked me in my face and continued working. It wasn't until I said something that one of the ruder ones said "I'll take you down there". Hold up??? What do you mean by you??? She gave me old fries with my hot order. Totally unacceptable the whole ordeal. No professionalism at all. I like shopping for groceries here! Good prices, fresh fruits and vegetables and an excellent selection of bulk dried goods and spices. It was a good experience. Lines move pretty quickly here as well. Cashier was pleasant and quick and to the point, was super nice and no one was crowding or rushing me in line. Plus, very clear. No doughty. Stuff was neatly shelved and there were plenty of associates if in case someone had a question. Prices clearly marked and visible to customers plus cheaper than most competitors, what else can somebody ask from a business. Will definitely be going back. read more

As much as I used to like Jewel, the one in Glen Ellyn is pretty sad. The only thing it has going for it is the hours of operation. Given its local competition I would think it would strive to aim higher. Their vegetables and meats, have a short shelf life and both are of lesser quality than other options, close by. During the pandemic, they went a few weeks, without saltine crackers. They said supply chain issues.... Well, okay but who runs out of saltine crackers? Their selection is limited and I'll accept being a small store an excuse but I have yet to find something as common as Chinese mustard, in their Asian section. They seem to constantly be moving to their store brand products, which makes their selection of choice even smaller. I stopped in yesterday, for some bread and buttermilk... They didn't have buttermilk! They had just about every other type of milk, you could think of but no buttermilk... 1%, 2%, Whole, Almond, Wheat, Oat... The list goes on but no buttermilk? Also I've notice they'll often sell what seems to be a one time shipment of something, which is kind of disappointing too. read more

Standard Jewel could benefit from a remodel. It's a perfectly fine grocery store. I shop here 3-4 times per week and spend about $200-300 each week. The problem is with some of the cashiers. There's one in particular who is just unpleasant. At first I thought maybe she wasn't trained properly but there's something more. Today I neatly stacked everything on the belt. I explained that the first half of my order had the additional $2 off bakery coupons on each item. Well, she missed two of the coupons so then she just rescanned the items to take off the coupons without voiding the two items she scanned and failed to apply the coupons towards. My total was $33 and I knew it should only be $21. I tried to explain the situation to her several times and she wasn't hearing it. She used an authoritative tone. I'm going back and forth with her and she's refusing to budge. It wasn't until a store manager approached that she magically found her error and started voiding the individual items. At this point I no longer wanted to deal with her. The manager actually removed her from the register and voided the whole order to start over. Sure enough, as soon as he scanned everything currently the total was $21. Now, I'm a mixed race woman so I don't know if that had anything to do with the interaction but the whole thing was unnecessary and she didn't need to act that way. She was so adamant that she wasn't wrong and refused to just listen and correct her mistake. Get her off the registers and put her in the bakery department or something. After this morning's interaction, I will not deal with her again. I'm still debating if I should call Albertsons to complain. read more

I really enjoy shopping at Jewel-Osco They have plenty of options when it comes to healthy food selections. Amazing amount of food are available here - beer, ice cream, dairy products, frizzy drinks, juice, healthy products etc. There is also flowers and bouquet for sale. I find new brands to support every time I go shopping there. If you want to live a healthy lifestyle, Jewel-osco is the way to go!! They have a lot of unique items and usually have things in stock, even in the recent times. The checkout assistants are friendly and helpful. Got really good experience shopping here. Jewel. does not care about their customers. Expired food, impossible to get a refund for items not delivered, an attitude of you must be wrong when you complain. I have never placed a negative review anywhere, but this needs to be addressed. I have to check the expiration dates of everything I bu,y otherwise I take home items already out of date or have one more good day left. Of course you can't return it. A few months ago I found several packages of lunch meat; all were more than a week past their expiration. I took all of them to the front desk. They said well the stockers get busy. And customers get sick! The last straw was when I placed a delivery order. They gave me two of someone else's bags and did not deliver two of my bags. It took 45 minutes convince customer service that my problem was not due to an out of stock replacement and stupidity. Finally they said they would refund me for the items I did not get. The recent store "refresh" has really helped. Mariano's coming into the area was good for getting the lax retailers off their asses and improving their stores. I still prefer the Jewel in Wheaton on Main St and Geneva Roads. Dominicks closing was really bad for consumers as Jewel and Dominicks price checked each other to stay competitive. That said, this store has a very good selection of dairy, dry goods, beverages and frozen foods. Deli prices are not very good. Unlike Mariano's and some other stores, the drugstore is an important part of the total store and they have selection and pricing to compete with Walgreens and CVS. The parking lot is a hazardous, confused mess. If you need to make any left turns when you leave... use the back entrances. Speaking of Mariano's, that's my favorite place to shop.. read more

It's a hit or miss here with everything. Not very friendly employees at times except for one person I did not get his name at the register. He was wearing dreadlocks and was very nice. I had one lady yell at me multiple times at the self checkout lane for no good reason. She did not have any patience whatsoever. The aisles are crowded and small and the place is never really that clean. The carts are always missing and it's super outdated. This is a bitter sweet review. For those who read my reviews, you know I do my best to be fair. I, unlike others, do not tear a business apart on one experience and do my best to be fair. I'm going to do this simple. 1. Wing bar. I have gone there at different times on different days. I've seen some so so wing bar and this one is somewhat disappointing. There have times when I've seen wings I wouldn't feed to my worst enemy. Dry to the point where only God himself knows how long they've been there. I doubt anyone else will buy them like that so why should I? 2. Subs. For my liking, VERY inconsistent. How so? Sometimes there's a fair amount meat on them and others I think I'm eating a salad. TOO much lettuce for my liking. That's one part. There have been several times when I bought a sub and there is NO MAYO in the bag. I'm often eating on the run so I check the bag & I have to back into the store to get some mayo. What's worse than that? Imagine getting an Italian sub & you not only have no dressing packet. Even worse, imagine getting an Italian sub & your dressing options are MAYO & YELLOW MUSTARD. Now if I'm wrong correct me but last time I check, yellow mustard and MAYO do not belong on an Italian sub. BAD execution. 3. Soups can be hit or miss. Sometimes you have them full and other times, like the wings, dried out and almost empty. I'm not sure how often they're being checked. If a soup is done for the day, "86" the flavor & be done with it. Don't leave some molten crust on the bottom of the pot. 4. Produce is inconsistent as it relates to freshness. Chicken at times look dried or overcooked. And with the ribs, they BURY it in sauce. I know enough about BBQ and the only reason they put that much sauce on it is when they're trying to hide SOMETHING (e.g., not properly smoked, seasoned, God forbid boiled, etc). I wrote this a while back but during the Easter season, they put fish in the same bin as the chicken. A death sentence for someone like me who is allergic. I informed one of the manager, he listened and yet afterwards (days later, no change. I haven't bought chicken (fried or grilled) or anything in that case since. 5. Salad bar to me is somewhat sub par, even compared to other locations in the area. 6. They dropped the ball as it relates to location. If they were serious, they would have moved down the street. The problem is that another competitor beat them to the punch. The store's size is not an excuse because I've been to other smaller locations (specifically, Lisle) where I've NEVER experienced these issues. 7. As a whole, the staff I've encountered (in particular the deli) were good people and that's the saving grace of this (that was 4 star worthy of the ones I dealt with). Maybe changing (not firing) leadership could be a good thing. Maybe they've done all they know to do. Maybe they've been in that location too long and a chance of scenery could do them good. Fresh blood could be of help although at this point, I'm not certain that will help. I've seen some conflicts between some staff and customers and that can't happen. Competition will be MUCH more stiff in the months ahead so I feel it's time for this location to look SERIOUSLY on how they can address issues reviewed by all parties. read more

I asked them a day before I needed it for a baby shark themed birthday cake they said they didn't have decorations but would do accent colors with the theme. Agreed. Truly one of the worst supermarkets I have ever shopped at. Old, dirty building that should be torn-down, many items out of stock, rude or indifferent employees, horrible produce. The parking lot here is also a nightmare. Poor design and speeding/creepy mostly Glen Ellyn mom's-on-crack in SUV's makes for a demolition derby type of environment. Why Jewel, who now owns the lease on the shuttered Dominick's in Baker Hill, didn't close this location and move into that beautiful store is completely idiotic and a poor business decision on their part. read more

Went to this location on Saturday to purchase orange juice, mixed fruit, and Paczki's. As of today i have had to throw out all 3. The tropicana orange juice expired 2-14, half the fruit in the bottom of the bowl was covered in mold and on Sunday the Paczki's were as hard as a rock. read more

Avoid this store if you can, and with all the competition just moments away, you can! For 25 years I have lived within blocks of this Jewel and have done my shopping elsewhere. I can't forget picking up celery only to see it all soupy in the bag on the shelf. There have been many other gross discoveries found by me and neighbors. How do you put out the lowest quality of produce year after year? Is this the forgotten step child of the entire Jewel system? Disgusting. Recently, I started going here again since they carry my fav coffee brand. Can't bring myself to purchase meat or produce here as it is certain to disappoint. Workers are generally crabby too. Not all, but it only takes one or two to leave that lasting impression. Aldi has the best produce selection and Fresh Market on Tuesdays has the freshest chicken and beef deals that I've ever found. The chicken is the freshest I can find short of going to Wheaton Meat Co. Trader Joes is good too but most items are sourced from the exact same producer and sold at Aldi's for much less. Jewel in general isn't one star. But I have to give them one star for not getting rid of an employee who is obviously the reason behind their horrible star rating on here. Visited twice today because we had a rain check for items written by one of the managers. First visit was pleasant with no issues. Second visit, I'm barely walking in the door before hearing a lady going off at customer service about an employee who shouldn't be working there. I assumed it was illness/covid related and went about my business thinking the lady was obviously being a Karen with the manager.... little did I know... We head to check out with the lovely Linda who gives us no salutation and starts slamming our items across the scanner, obviously waiting for the end of her shift to come. (I've worked in retail over 10 years. I know the feeling.) She looks at the rain check paper and goes "What the heck is this? We don't accept these." I told her we had already been there earlier today and used a rain check but had forgotten one at home. "Yeah I doubt that. We haven't been accepting rain checks because of Covid. We don't take returns or anything back." .....iight... So how does that apply here ma'am? I asked her to explain that logic to me. "Oh idk it's just what our managers have been telling us." Which is interesting because the earlier cashier didn't give us an issue, and the manager was the one who offered the rain check in the first place. I told her that we're not returning anything. It's a coupon, so how does not accepting a coupon have to do with Covid, exactly? You just like taking advantage of the situation and customers? Is that the connection you're trying to make? K, well I asked for her manager being he was the one that wrote them to which of course she huffed and puffed. I spoke up and told her that I didn't appreciate the way she handled the situation. My 70-year-old dad just wanted his 75 cent pop tarts, and instead of being a decent human being and being polite about the policy you assumed you were right about, you took joy in shutting down a 70 year old man with his coupon he was excited about. That's the kind of person Linda is. Thankfully another cashier came over and processed the rain check for us. The manager never actually came bc he was with another customer. Linda goes on about how she's been working in the industry for so long and obviously knows what she's talking about. To which I tried to respond to before she threw her hand in my face and said "Whatever! I don't want to hear you anymore. We're done here so God BLESS you!" What a lovely lady. I can't imagine this was the employee the lady from earlier was going on about.... Jewel, do yourself a liability favor and get rid of this lady. This grocery store makes you want to come back every time you need something. Mark , Frank, Rosanne, and the other managers are absolutely wonderful. They acknowledge you all the time by either helping you or just a simple hello. All the employees at jewel are absolutely fabulous. The grocery baggers are amazing so helpful and always asking if you need assistance to your car and help you unload your cart. Mike the Assistant Manager is the rudest person I have encountered in a "customer service" field. He will not hesitate to raise his voice and create a scene with customers. Tonight I watched him instruct another employee to move a customers bike from inside the store to the outside, with no regard to the value or safety of the item being moved. When the customer informed him that the bicycle was quite valuable and should not be moved, he screamed that it should not be in the store. The customer was adamant that they are a regular who often brings their bike inside, since their are no bike racks, nor is their a safe place to leave it outside (I won't even mention the homeless people that live around the building). He screamed at the customer telling them they should leave and not return. RATHER THAN HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THE CUSTOMER, HE STOOD IN THE DOORWAY OF THE BACK OFFICE AND CREATED A SCENE THAT DREW THE ATTENTION OF ALL THE CHECKOUT LANES AND CUSTOMERS AND EMPLOYEES WAITING. That is unacceptable. I do not understand how someone who is an Assistant Store Manager can alienate the area residents, who are the most frequent shoppers. With so many competitors in the area, and no real way of complaining to corporate, you have to wonder what's being done to ensure customer service is the priority and not someone power tripping because they can. And here's a thought, invest in a bike rack and some outdoor lighting on the side of the building. Don't chastise customers who just want to be able to ride to the grocery store and not be embarrassed by some inappropriate and unprofessional manager. Show some compassion to your customers. AND DON'T EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, MOVE SOMEONE'S PROPERTY, TO AN UNSECURED LOCATION, IF YOU ARE UNWILLING TO BEAR THE FULL FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OF THAT ITEM WHEN IT COMES UP DAMAGED OR STOLEN. SOMEONE IN A POSITION OF POWER AT JEWEL, NEEDS TO SIT MIKE DOWN AND HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH HIM, REGARDING HIS ROLE AT JEWEL AND HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH PEOPLE. read more

The grapes were rotting and had fruit flies, the supposed fresh baked bread was so hard it could be used as a hammer and the whole place was dirty and understocked. I found a manager, guy with glasses in his 40's or 50's, and told him all of this and he decided to argue with me about what I was saying rather than apologize and fix the problem. This Jewel kind of blows compared to the one in Wheaton. It is dirty, rundown, and the staff is neither polite nor helpful. The produce is iffy on a good day and downright suspect on the worst days. The only plus is that the self-serve lines move quickly and usually require very little interaction with the staff. The parking lot is also a disaster. read more
