There are now only 188 Jewel grocery stores in Illinois, mostly located in the Chicagoland area, where I grew up. It is a subsidiary of the nationwide grocery chain Albertson's (which purchased it in 1999). We stopped in this location in LIbertyville, IL, to pick up some whiskey while on a visit. It's a larger store, and was the first time I saw a dedicated 'cellar' like retail space to sell wine (initially I thought it was a wine cooler but realized it was not). Going to the liquor section, it had all the standards and the prices were reasonable comparably (cheaper than your local liquor store but more expensive than a alcohol superstore like Binnys). Some of the hard liquor was behind locked glass, though the prices didn't seem too much higher than what was openly available. This store is my go to while in the area, which isn't often. My main reason for coming here is their chicken! They have by far the best fried and grilled chicken I've had, especially from a grocery store. Their grilled chicken pieces are seasoned with a nice unique peppery rub and then grilled. I discovered it on accident while at a Jewel-osco location, and it was love at first bite ever since. On my trip this week to IL, I could help but keep telling my fiancee of this chicken, which was one of my highlights of this trip. Their fresh fruit trays are pretty good too. Yikes! Workers from the meat department walking around with no masks on. Why are they allowed to handle meat like that? I guess they're "masks are required" sign only applies to customers, not their employees. Seeing that their co workers were not phased by this it seems like this is a regular occurrence. Says a lot about the management here. I suggest curbside pickup or delivery if you want groceries from this location. If you're okay with how lenient they're with safety precautions come by. Great produce, meats and seafood. Friendly and helpful staff. Store is laid out in a user friendly way.

This location does not give their employees fair pay, nor do they give good hours. I've heard horror stories of employees getting scheduled to work until midnight and then 8am the next morning. Management here makes sure no one works enough to get benefits. I know people that quit after working here for years and made less than new employees. Food is decent but overpriced. They also put up signs saying "Clearance!" and then the sale price is either a penny less, or the exact same price. They also intentionally make the soda section sales confusing because they know some people will buy from different vendors and not notice that they didn't get the sale price. Do not shop here, the management does not care about the customers and even less about the employees. read more

I now shop at Mariano's and here's why: They NEVER have remotely stocked shelves. I went there for bananas. That's all I needed. Bananas. They were OUT! How is a grocery store - a big chain grocery store - out of bananas? The guy who stocks the freezer consistently has a chip on his shoulder. There are several check out people who need a refresher course in customer service. (there are three who are nice) the baggers put bread in with a carton of juice. Really?! Ugh! I would do it myself, but they took the self check out lanes out. then they only have three lanes open on busy days (Bears games, etc.) The topper? I bought a box of cereal for my kids. Came home, put it away. The next day, I fed my kids said cereal. Then when I went to feed it to them a 2nd time, I happened to notice that the CEREAL EXPIRED OVER AN ENTIRE YEAR AGO! This is not the first time they've sold expired food. I have returned expired food three times prior including frozen food. It's pretty messed up... How long does frozen food sit to let it expire? That takes quite a long time. Serious issue! I have given constructive feedback, requested refunds, and downright complained. Management makes no attempt to improve customer service, procedures/protocols. The store is generally dirty and the bathroom is DISGUSTING! read more

2 reasons I had to stop shopping at my new Jewel (moved to Mundelein recently) 1). 2 electronic carts - usually "in use". Location of carts far away from entrance. Recently had knee replaced- need cart. Very hard and fast rules about cart not going outside (even with employee escort). Just ridiculous. Marianos across street has 8 carts in entrance and happily let orthopedic challenged people use in parking lot. 2). Pick up and Go OR delivery: Jewel has had the absolute nerve of keeping your final purchase price "held" by your bank 10 days!! As a regular customer, I ordered 3 months ago and noticed $114.00 put on "hold" in my bank account as soon as order was placed on line. I picked up the order the next day and another $114.00 was taken out! The initial $114.00 was not released for 10 days. So I was out $228 for 10 days!!!! Even called bank VP and they confirmed jewel was responsible. Stopped ordering Pick Up and Go and delivery BOTTOM LINE: Stopped shopping/spending $500/month at Jewel read more

This is a post about the rude ladies at the deli counter. I would put her name here but her tag was covered up. She was yelling and so rude that her team mate called her out. They then made a joke about it but what's done is done. I've never been yelled at so rudely in a store before. Yes, yelled and it was clear she didn't want to help. Use to be the best Jewel around...not anymore! Bakery goods in the cabinet with flies, deli closes earlier without notification on website, bakery just doesn't look clean, deli not clean. Asked for sliced 1lb of cheese last week, sides were smeared with whatever was last on the slicer. Didn't accept it, so the clerk sliced another order, it was better. Within 3 days, whatever crud was left on the cheese slicer turned moldy and wrecked the rest of the cheese. From the smells in the meat dept, don't trust it, either. Very disappointed in the execution of their 'Wear Bears Gear' promo... After months of letting people save 10% for wearing Bears gear, Jewel decided to flip gears and require a JERSEY. The cashier mentioned there were MANY angry customers because of this. I am one of them. I abhor when companies flip flop and change the rules in the middle of the game. Will never shop here again until this location gets rid of the live lobster tanks :( it's disgustingly inhumane and really sad to watch lobsters climbing on top of each other in a barren empty tank with their claws banded together. This has been my "go to" grocery store for twenty years. They have gone through many changes, and are always trying to keep up with things. They added much more organic foods. And they constantly try to bring in new and unusual items. I really appreciate that. Check out lines get backed up at times but never like at the other grocery stores. Everyone is friendly, especially Brett who I believe is a manager. He's been there for many years. I have zero complaints about this store. It's really a matter of preference. We have many grocery stores to choose from in the area. Marianos is huge and impersonal, Trader Joe's is friendly but not a lot of choice, Sunset has good selection but workers are pretentious and I feel like they are doing me a favor to LET me shop there. I haven't gone into this Whole Foods yet. But Jewel is my favorite. read more

This store is always clean, well lit and the staff is friendly. I have stopped in here when in the area to pick up snacks and beer or liquor - they have a nice wine, beer and liquor selection. Prices are reasonable. I have always used the self checkout and like that the person monitoring self checkouts has always come over and swiped the Jewel Osco savings card without me asking. The manager on duty at Jewel Osco ***Libertyville location*** this afternoon told me they can't refuse people entry to the store if they aren't wearing a mask. This was after I complained about the woman behind me with no mask who was clearing her throat and sniffling and was not maintaining 6ft distance. Not even the manager on duty had a correct awareness of the executive order. I will be calling to report them on Monday and I thought all of you should know so you can determine how comfortable you are with that and proceed as you wish. I went here recently to pick up a catering order for my aunt. The man who assisted barked at me to give him *all* the details of the order and was extremely agitated - he had no record of what it was, the name on the order, or when it would be ready. What is the point of calling in an order a week in advance if they don't write the information down? I know business at this location has gone down in recent years, but I don't think it has to do with the competition from the relatively new Mariano's across the street so much as their lack of staffing and poor customer service. The check-out lines are never properly staffed, although at least the employees stationed there are friendly. I went in yesterday because I was in the area, and they USED to have goo quick sushi to go. I went in and the store has been remodeled nicely (I am assuming to try to compete with Mariano's across the street). In the "fresh sushi" section- there were a whopping 2 (yes 2) packages of sushi(AT LUNCH TIME). Both of them looked old and not fresh. I went to the fish counter to inquire if there was more, and the sushi people were actually there. They made me a fresh package of what I asked for. The sushi however....not so much. Had intestinal issues after consumption (I'll leave it at that) When I went to check out the self check outs had been removed, and the open lanes had a gazillions people in each of them including the "express" lanes of which two were open, but only one cashier was present. IT took 15 minutes to get out of there! The cashier was unfriendly, unapologetic, slightly rude and clearly did not like her job. I will NOT be returning. I would rather pay a little more and have better quality sushi and service across the street. The only positive note I have is that Jewel employs challenged individuals as baggers. I like that and I wish more companies would give people opportunities like this. Each one of the baggers I passed on my way out of the store told me to have a nice day. I live in Gurnee yet I come to the Libertyville store to do my shopping.. there's just something more open .. the lighting... the friendliness of this store.. I do have one pet peeve last week I bought bananas and the person that did the bagging put the bananas in a bag with a jar of jelly and a can.. I can understand if it was one of the handicapped / disabled people but it was a lady maybe in her 30's or 40's and I would have thought she would know better. I usually tell people to bag the bananas separate or maybe with bread.. but 2 out of 3 bananas were bruised ... and this irritates me when I spent the time to pick them out. Thank you read more

I used to like going to this store, but recently not so much anymore. Due to the COVID crisis, they have these automated check outs which require you to follow a long list of rules. It was our first time at the automated check out, we were confused. There were no instructions,and to make it worse one of the store clerks was extremely rude. She spied us while we were checking out, and demanded to inspect our groceries even when we didn't ask for help. She treated us with little to no respect, as if we did not understand English. We also heard her yell at other people as well. Do not come here, if you are looking to be greeted with smiles, and be welcomed in. Don't think I'll come back here anytime soon. read more

It's an OK grocery store. Neither dirty nor excessively clean. Nothing stands out one way or the other. I find the prices generally higher than other stores. They are currently having a stamp program for Cuisinart cookware which is appealing but I wonder if the money I save would just pay for a pan normally.... Produce, liquor selection, and great parking is probably the best reason to visit this store. Otherwise, much of the staff is burned-out and borders on hostile. If you order shrimp from the seafood lady, she directs you to the frozen aisle to pick up a bag. Chronic out-of-stocks in dairy - complaining doesn't help. Dinosaur store manager is content to roam the back aisle with his cup of coffee, eating samples and chatting with the meatcutters. Store needs some fresh energy but with Mariano's in and Trader Joe's coming soon, store is probably on the closure list when Supervalu sells Jewel. read more

Pretty nice Jewel - an older location but a sizable one and one that's been updated mildly over the years. Despite the fact that Marianos is across the street, this Jewel is competitive on price and - oddly enough - I've noticed that prices at this Jewel are moderately cheaper on some items than the other Jewel closest to this one. Overall, if I'm nearby, I'll be happy to stop here. Marianos is very nice, but this wins on price. read more

OK, so I hadn't shopped regularly at Jewel since Mariano's opened down the street. A few months ago I stopped by Jewel (probably to avoid the parking lot at Mariano's) and have since done all my shopping there or with their online delivery. I find the people very friendly, the store clean, great produce and fish & meat options, and the prices are significantly lower than Sunset and Mariano's (though I do remain a loyal Trader Joe's shopper as well.) Honestly, if you took a can of white paint to the dark brown cabinets behind the deli counter and put some hardwood floors in produce, shopping here would feel more like shopping at the more expensive competitors. I have always found the cashiers, baggers, stockers, and produce guys at this store to be very friendly. The customers are generally civil too which is much more than I can say for Mariano's. The problem with this Jewel are the two old bags that run the meat department. They are the rudest, laziest two women I've ever interacted with in a grocery store. I cook every night and spent ~$800/mo. at this store but I'm done due to three incidences. Incident 1, "THE butcher" was the only person working when I came in so I asked her to grab me a pair of steaks from the display case. She huffed at me like I had asked her to drive me to Utah. After wrapping them up she threw them over the counter and ran into the back room. Incident 2. Shrimp were on special and the other lazy old butcher was setting up a display. I figured, hey, shrimp look nice, so I asked her for two pounds. She said in the most 'leave me alone' voice she could muster "or you could just walk over to the frozen department and get a bag yourself like I'm going to have to do in a minute, thanks." I don't care if you have to walk to Thailand and catch them yourself, just shut your mouth and sell me my f'in shrimp! Today, incident #3, now aware that the butchers are lazy rude old hags, I asked one in the absolute most polite fashion I could muster if she wouldn't mind slicing a roast 5 times and cubing it for me. She huffed again (doing a butcher's job must be like getting punched in the stomach for these ladies) and, though she could have done it herself in two minutes, she spent 5 minutes looking for the apprentice butcher to do it for her. The apprentice was a very pleasant and professional young man, the butcher's union needs to take a serious look at their "seniority uber allus" policy.
