There are certain items that are only available here. So I make the drive over (like ahead of the winter advisory) for my must haves. Generally speaking, the prices for certain meat options and fruit are more reasonable than other supermarkets. The Latin food selection is unmatched and everyone is so helpful. My husband got us a torta, rice, and marinated veggies in the back of the store by the deli. The torta was packed and so flavorful! Definitely recommend and will be back for more. The rice is my favorite, too. It has corn, peas, and carrots in it. So good! The marinated veggies are really good, but quite spicy! Overall, super tasty food and decent prices. Great store when in need of fresh produce, fruit and Hispanic products. I even noticed fresh figs! I always get excited when I see figs, but they were on the smaller side. Produce is displayed nicely and store itself is very clean and layout is comfortable. Some ethnic variety, but main focus is Hispanic. You may want to bring your español as most employees speak little English, but I've never had a problem ordering. They are helpful and kind as are the customers. Fresh and yummy bakery dept with a nice variety of your favorite gringo or gringa selections. Various Churro are muy bien! I didn't realize I was a fan until now. Pre-marinated meats are easily found for your Mexican nights. Large selection of beef, pork, chicken, chorizo. Very good arrachera (they will clean and tenderize for you, just ask). Lately, I've been getting this on every visit because who can resist grilling and it really melts in your mouth. I just marinade using 5-6 squeezed limes, a big bottle of Modelo (they carry beer too) and let it rest for just an hour! You don't need to marinate for hours, it comes out unbelievably tender off the grill. Grab the Arrachera seasoning by meat section and your good to go. Prepared food section has tamales, tacos, burittos, carnita, huge fritas! etc.... I recently bought some carnitas, and the taste was funny to me, left an off flavor coating my mouth. Not the best I've tasted, but could have been an off day for carnitas? Good tamales. Deli section looked nicely stocked though I haven't tried. If you need essentials such as orange juice, eggs, milk, they stock a limited variety and some items were pricier than your standard grocery store. No organic eggs, but they had an Amish brand which I bought in a pinch. If you're not Hispanic, you may stand out a little, but you won't be alone. Don't let that discourage you from coming here. Villa Park Fruit Market is definitely what you would expect if you've been to any other fruit market that caters to Hispanic foods in the Chicagoland area. I find great bargains here on produce and meat. The produce is good and very affordable. There are other stores with better produce, but it's a great deal fresher than the main food store chains. The butcher, Santos, was very helpful with helping me decide on the various cuts of meat. He also had great recommendations for cooking and prepping a few dishes. At the meat counter, you can also purchase prepared foods that are ready to consume. After seeing a sign for a taco special, I was convinced to try the chile relleno taco - very good! The rest of the store has a nice variety of Hispanic grocery items as well as regular, everyday groceries. These items seem to be a little pricier than I would expect. There is also a restaurant inside where you can seat and eat. There is also a bakery so you can get a pastry to take. You can even order a cake for a birthday or even for a wedding. I visited Villa Park Fruit Market on my way back to Chicago from Geneva this past Sunday. I bought 4 small avocados, 3 peaches, a bag of clementines and a fresh pineapple. The avocados and peaches were ripe by Tuesday, I brought them to work, cut into them at lunchtime and found that all 4 of the avocados were rotten and had to be tossed. 2 and a half of the peaches were rotten and had to be tossed. I was going to cut the pineapple this morning but it had turned black and wet so into the garbage it went. The clementines were dried up. I was able to eat a few of them yesterday but today one had rotted and spoiled everything else in the bag. I visit a lot of fruit and vegetable markets and understand that there may be a bit of spoilage sometimes in stores. I was really shocked that every single thing I bought went bad. I think the managers should probably pay better attention to the quality of their produce. read more

I bought bread at the Azteca bakery that is inside the Fruit Market, they never give a receipt but I asked for it today and I was surprised that they charged tortillas in addition to the bread that I actually bought. Of course, a bakery doesn't sell tortillas and I never ordered tortillas. Please, request a receipt and review it before you leave. I can't imagine how much they make at the end of each day after topping up a dollar on every purchase they make. read more

Villa Park Fruit Market has served me well over the years. It's practically across the street from where I work, so you'll find me here quite often. I'm usually picking up last minute items that I forgot at our local grocery store or you'll find me in line at their in-store bakery or in the back at their in-store grill. The grocery store is pretty basic but they seem to have an extensive amount of "ethnic" Latino foods and Polish imports. At the back grill is where you can pick up prepared foods for a fair price. They do quesadillas, tacos, burritos, and other dishes. You really can't go wrong with a paper basket of tacos from here. I'm also a fan of their marinated meats. As the name would suggest, they offer a ton of fruit. It's not always at the best price, but the variety is a thing of beauty. It's definitely affordable most days and every once in a while there's a great steal of a deal. Don't forget to check out the little juice bar and deli in the front. They make fresh sandwiches, elotes, and tasty tamales. read more

I live nearby and I come here sometimes. I prefer Caputo's over Villa Park Fruit Market but with that said it's a solid choice as a fresh market. I can be pretty picky about fruits and veggies and do prefer organic - which they really don't carry. The customer service is ok - nothing to write home about. Prices are crazy low! The store caters to all nationalities and they carry a large assortment of ethnic items. They remodeled a couple of years ago and became pretty neutral nationality wise. Prior to the remodel the store had a real Mexican feel and I sometimes felt a little out of place there (I look Spanish but I'm Polish and everyone used to speak to me in Spanish). Since the remodel it feels just like it does at any other Fresh Market. Bottom line - nothing negative -- but not stunning customer service. read more

I like the moves. I like the style. I like the prices. What else can I say? It's details, you need? How about bright, shiny and clean appearance? How about great deals on deli meats and cheeses, and fresh-baked bakery bread. Seriously, you can pay $10 for a sub sandwich, chips and at some fancy deli restaurant, or you can pay a few bucks more, and have an entire loaf of bread, and enough fresh deli meat/cheese, trimmings and chips to feed you all week and take your lunch to work. Or, you can step on over to the hot food section and select from any combination of entrees like tacos, tortas, tilapia dinners, and all kinds of hot sides- again, all of which very reasonably priced. It's a shame I gotta head all the way to Villa Park to snag a deal, but it's a trek I'm willing to make for now. read more

Ok...so this summer we (Angies hubby actually) grilled the shiz out of their adobo rubbed chicken they carry. Man, just thinking about it makes me miss summer already. For about $6 you get 5 pieces of deliciously seasoned chicken that you just throw on the grill! I can definitely say that the renovation really helped this place out. I must be missing something that everyone else likes when it comes to this place. After moving into town not too long ago, I had to find a new place to get fresh produce. I checked out yelp and read the reviews for this place and decided to check it out. Don't go here. Just don't. It's disgusting. There were flies flying around everywhere (including inside the glass at the meat area). I know that's hard to avoid when dealing with fruits and veggies. But it didn't look good when flies were hanging out in their display cases eating their food. The place looked and smelled dirty. And forget about picking up that thing you forgot to get at the other store earlier (a case of soda in my situation) There is no variety in the non-produce things they carry. Not convenient at all. Plus I was greeted by a very large sign stating I can't bring backpacks and large purses into the store. That should have been a red flag right there. I was watched like a hawk. They weren't happy when I ignored the sign and just opened up my big baby bag and left all the compartments open to show my large bag was filled with diapers, bottles, and baby formula. I'm not leaving that stuff in the car when dealing with an infant. Not worth your time or money. read more

Next to Aldi and Sam's Club, this is my go-to grocery store. It is close to home and there is a good selection of fresh produce. The deli counter is also very good, and the prices blow other grocery stores out of the water! Fresh meat is normally a good price but the selection isn't great for steaks. Other highlights include: 1) freshly made tacos for $1 (yeah, you are at the grocery store, but who wants to cook after you have been out running errands?) 2) fresh carnitas you can purchase by the pound (hello: super easy lunch time tacos for the week!) 3) you can ask the butcher to cut you something fresh 4) Mexican Coke in the bottle is ice cold and waiting for you 5) Mexican groceries that you can't find anywhere else 6) THE BAKERY! They have the freshest produce and lunch meats and the prices...the lowest around!! =] This is my go-to spot for Hispanic items, produce, lunch meats and even sometimes pan (bread) from the panaderia right inside. The customer service is always on point and the Greek (at least he looks Greek) guy behind the deli told me which one of the Greek cheese wheels they make saganaki out of and now I'm hooked!! So good! They also have a pretty good selection of European, Indian, Italian and Middle Eastern imports if that's your thing. =] This is a MUST if you live in the area and you go grocery shopping. So clean, so spacious...I know I said "Wow" out loud when I walked in. I had no idea such a nice store lived in this strip mall. When you first walk in, you're greeted by a nice array of fresh fruits and veggies. I came in with no real agenda, I was just told that I should check it out (JW you were right, OK?). I found a lot of great items here and all were reasonably priced. Even certain baby products were reasonably priced and that's amazing considering I find baby items so overpriced sometimes. The meat and fish in the butcher/seafood display was very fresh. I took home some short ribs and they were really good quality. There were a nice selection of "ready to cook" meats for tacos/fajitas that looked pretty good too. The spice aisle was really nice with a good selection. Although if you're looking for Indian spices or more exotic ones, there isn't much for you here. But they did have saffron threads though! I let my nose lead me to the bakery section and rightly so, it's amazing. Just the aroma of fresh-baked bread is intoxicating. (I love bread, ok?). The cakes and fresh baked sweets looked really good. A few years ago, my SIL got my MIL a cake from here and it was really good. There is also a counter for tacos and other freshly made snacks. Also a juice bar near the exit. I opted for a pork taco and steak taco and they were both really good. The roasted pork reminded me of the whole pig roasts we've had at parties (Lechon for you Filipino folks) very tender and so very good in a taco. The steak was good too. The juice bar featured fresh licuados, horchata and coffee as well as fresh fruit, corn and tamales--I will save the juice bar for another time. I'll be back to shop here for sure. read more

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting when I walked into the Fruit Market yesterday, but what I found inside was quite overwhelming and very nice all around. I went in searching for something to have for lunch. I had a ton of errands to run on my lunch hour and didn't have more than a few minutes to spend searching. So I ran inside VPFM and was floored by the selection. The produce was beautiful and there was a massive selection. I loved the Mexican food hot bar, but I was too intimidated by the selection to actually make one. There meat in the butcher's area looked very fresh and there was tons to choose from. And there were stacks of every kind of tortilla you can imagine piled nearly as tall as I am. Since this is a hispanic-focused store, I also saw a nice variety of chorizo and queso. I most certainly need to come back and do an actual grocery shopping trip here, and perhaps order some things from the tasty-looking hot bar. read more

I stopped in here while driving down North Avenue (Goodwill: Bust. Target: Sudafed acquired.) and decided to give it a shot. We drive past here a lot but hadn't previously gone in since we have Caputo's closer to us. At first impression, the store seems to be very similar to Caputo's but with the newly remodeled look of a Dominick's. It is smaller than Caputo's, though, and doesn't have quite as much variety. But. The Good: - Huge produce section, prices seemed good - Very clean, nice looking with the remodel, everything is well-labeled - Lots of Mexican products, including flavors of Jarritos I'd never seen in a two-liter - Decent size bakery, meat section and selection of cheeses - Small cafe with horchata, tacos, tamales, etc for cheap - Homemade salsa and guacamole sold by the huge tub Downsides: - No real frozen section, just part of one wall with some frozen fish and potatoes - Mostly Mexican products and a few Polish things but not much else on the ethnic front - A little chaotic and I felt a little out of place not understanding any Spanish (OK, this is my gringa problem!) All in all a decent place to stop, and I would go back, but it won't replace Caputo's in my heart. read more

Like many others this is our go to grocery store. Their produce is the best around! I prefer to buy most of my meat from Sam's or Costco, I find the quality and price to be better. But I do suplement here, otherwise top notch across the board. But what I really wanted to rave about is their catering. This past weekend we ordered food for our daughter's baptism (carnitas & barbacoa packages, taquitos, and guac). The price was incredibly reasonable and the food was excellent! The meat was very tender, the taquitos were crispy, and the guacamole was a big hit too! Next time I'll order an extra pan of rice and beans, they went fast. My husband is Mexican and my family and friends are all mid-westerners - both sides loved the food. We had someone pick up the food for us, and they couldn't say enough nice things about the friendly staff. We have always found everyone there to be very kind and helpful. They have the best and wide selection of fresh fruits and veggies. Some seasonal and special fruits are also available inside. I honestly like to go in here specifically for their produce items. It is for sure not the largest grocery store but it has an enough space, the layout is nice, well-organized and it is easy to know where anything is placed. Their meat and seafood section are fresh, they have a pretty good selection in their deli and their pastries has a lot and wonderful selection on their bakery and I cannot help myself but to buy something from it and it was so good and it seems freshly baked too. Aside from that, they also have a hot bar and rotisserie that sells and has a lot of option of different delicious foodies at air prices and definitely a good option whenever I felt hungry having groceries. This is just basically everything that I could ask for in a grocery store. The prices are also fair and reasonable and a bit cheaper than the other grocery stores near it. Staffs are friendly and accommodating too and they have a spacious and easy parking. I am not a regular customer of this store but this is definitely a great one. Highly recommended! read more

It's been a couple of years since I visited the Villa Park Fruit Market, and wow - what a change. The remodeled space feels much more open and spacious (it could actually have increased it's square footage significantly - I can't say for sure). While the previous produce section had a bit of a feel of a maze to navigate, the new department features numerous islands on which various exotic and mundane fruits and veggies are lovingly displayed. There were several excellent sales going on (granny smith apples for $0.69/lb., for example). The deli counter appeared to be doing a good amount of business as I walked past, and the bakery (distinct Mexican flavor here--pun intended) smelled amazing. I really liked the previous incarnation of the Villa Park Fruit Market, but this version is better in pretty much every way. The only thing that's lost is the feeling of a neighborhood supermercado. It's more upscale and homogenized, but the result is a more pleasant and efficient shopping experience. read more

This is my new quick go-to when I'm in need of produce! This market has a great variety of fruits, vegetables, and fresh herbs - from the everyday to some you might not have even heard of (yet). The prices are affordable and the store is clean. They also have a wide selection of made-in-store snack mixes that are great to look through. I end up with one (or more) every time I go shopping here! I love the cracker peanuts, myself... There's a huge section of cheeses, hummus, and different kinds of appetizers and spreads that always look good, and they make several different kinds of salsas, salads, and guacamole that are sold fresh daily. I'm vegan so I haven't tried their meats, but they look very fresh and my family assures me that everything is of the utmost quality. There's also a food counter at the store where you can usually order some Latino specialty dishes - which always smell amazing and I've been told taste as good as homemade. The rest of the store has a great selection of products. There's an international aisle where you can find Asian, Middle Eastern, and European goods. The other aisles offer familiar brands and some Mexican imports that are great to try too. They have lots of quality spices, seasonings, and mixes, as well as fresh-dried/bagged seasoning ingredients like chilis, whole spices (instead of ground), and the like. The bakery in this store is AMAZING. The smell alone is enough to make you hungry. They make everything from cakes to gelatin molds, cheesecakes, bread puddings, doughnuts, corn cakes, flan, cookies, rolls, breads, pitas, pretzels, and other miscellaneous baked goods! I can't even describe how overwhelming it is. I want to try one of everything... If you're in the area, it's definitely worth stopping in and checking out! read more

One star off for not offering any organic selections. Well, make that a half star because the variety of produce here is overwhelming. Abundant and fresh specialty fruits and vegetables (Persian cucumbers? Check! Black Radishes? Check? Nopales? Prickly Pear? Check and Check!) The variety was across several cuisines, although it did lean heavily toward Latin American varieties. If you need it, and you need it fresh, it will probably be here. I purchased some Chilean peaches, which were almost better than se .......... veral batches of fresh peaches I had in the summer (get your mind out of the gutter!) I also scored some house made pico, and fresh mexican sour cream. Yum. If you are a fan of Bene Hungarian meats, they are also available here. Particularly convenient if the Bene "factory" store nearby is closed. They also have a very large selection of mexican baked goods and pastries as well. For years, I simply shopped the mega-supermarkets for all my food. Shortly after trying the likes of Pete's Fresh Market or Villa Park Fruit Market for produce, I wonder why I ever did so. For Villa Park Fruit Market, the produce is exceptionally cheap, and mostly very fresh. One caveat is that it will spoil fast, so one should shop only for 'now' needs. Not many items are listed as organic, but the lack of stating 'Organic' shouldn't dissuade you as the spoilage alone indicates they aren't using typical radiation/additives for preservation. The meat market has Boar's Head meats, and also at super low prices. The staff in all departments is friendly and helpful. Final note: the bakery, bearing the name Azteca bakery, is one of the best Mexican Panderias in the Lombard/Addison area (that I've tried). Very inexpensive, and their typical mexican bakery items (particularly their Piedras, corn muffins, and jalapeno-cream cheese filled bun) are regularly featured on specials and are wonderful. While their monster-sized fruit danish won't compare to Kuppie's or a French patisserie in sweetness, they are fluffy and fresh...and did I mention they're huge? Of the three mexican bakeries in a two minute-drive radius (Aracely's and Sweet Connections being the other two), this is my favorite stop in the morning to bring a little treat to the office. read more

I started feeling greedy when I saw the cut up fruit selections. I endulged and bought some when I didn't need to spend the xtra. While shopping in a new store that clearly I'm not familiar with, I had to ask where certain items were located. So on more than 1 occasion I had to ask for help. Man o man what OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE! Makes a difference when you're spending your hard earned money, and people at the store act like they give a damn. I'm making fish tacos and needed a few extra ingredients. 3 people came over offered translation assistance and helped me look for coriander and dill weed. This USED to be my favorite place to get fresh produce but I have since graduated to a higher standard. While it is true that they have very good prices and do offer good sales on a nice selection of items throughout the store, the grass IS greener somewhere else. The cosmetic appearance of the store has improved over the years but I find that the produce quality has lessened. I am big fan of kale, collard greens, and spinach but this place does not offer the best quality greens. On two separate occasions I have purchased their dirt cheap red peppers, cut them open that same day to find a colony of mold. Also I have found that sometimes their oranges are destroyed on the inside. I'm not sure if this is due to freezing or age but the orange is only useful as rotting compost on the bottom of my trash receptacle. Some time back I approached the service counter and spoke to a dark-haired gentleman about one of my dead oranges that I had I purchased for full price. He told me that I would need to bring the orange back for a refund. Yeah ok, I'm going to dig into my trash can, drive 15 minutes, and get a 73 cent refund. Nope. Other than the mild unpleasantries I have seldom encountered, this is a decent place to shop. I would recommend it to someone who is in close proximity but it is no longer my primary produce vendor. read more
