Spicy Carrot Rigatoni - like a meatless bolognese

Why I'll go back: Mouthwatering farm fresh dishes that the Jewell kitchen puts its own unique spin on You HAVE to order: The burger. The best I've had in the Palm Beach/West Palm/Lake Worth area Tony's Tip: While they take reservations, it's easier to get a walk-in table than you might think. Not every night, but many nights. Funny how I found this place. Having recently bought a condo in the South End of Palm Beach last year, I was taking care of some errands across the bridge in Lake Worth and getting my bearings a bit. I'm driving down Dixie Highway and frankly thinking, "this is a fairly gritty area." Then I pass by a funky sign that says, "Jewell Bistro Food * Wine * Casual" and I'm like, "Who would try to pull off a dine-in restaurant in this spot?" Of course, my interest is piqued, so I take the natural next step. Pull over and stop in? No. Google for the web site? No! I open up my Yelp app and see what my fellow Yelpers think. Well, I shoulda known better than to judge a book by its cover. Apparently hiding behind that quirky sign and unassuming storefront is a foodie paradise! A "diamond in the rough" - literally! I perused the photos (always my first action), then read some reviews, then did a second round of photo ingestion. Conclusion: looks legit. Now the only challenge is to get the wife to trust me and walk through the door. Turns out, I've built more foodie cred w/ her than I anticipated, so we agreed to hit The Jewell the next week. I made a reservation, though you can often slide in without one. On the other side is an eclectic dining room that's more reminiscent of a pub, but dressed up a bit to liven the ambiance in what is inevitably a losing battle to compete with the amazing food. We found out that the owner/chef and his pastry chef wife formerly operated what is now Oceano Kitchen (another amazing husband/wife duo). What he does with vegetables and cheeses in salads and sauces on pasta, not to mention an absolutely outstanding burger, is nothing short of culinary artistry. We've now been here five times in the past year, and we've loved just about every dish we've tried. Jay runs the front of house operation, doting on every table and describing the ingredient sourcing and preparation of each item with poetic eloquence. He truly makes you feel welcome and special. The food speaks for itself. The menu can be a bit abbreviated and cryptic, so make sure to ask if you're not clear on what the dish is. I'd highlight the salads, which are super fresh and often quite different from what you'll find elsewhere. The beer selection is underrated, so be sure to explore that part of the menu and ask if there's anything special available. And don't forget dessert - Miss Marsha makes a mean mango pie! A few other tips: * the menu changes daily and is available online * cash only, and bring plenty * we usually park on 9th Ave. or the small plaza lot Needless to say, this is a jewel of a spot. Find a night to stop in and enjoy this truly unique dining experience!

I'm in love. Those of you who follow me know that I don't give 5 stars out that often. This place spoke to me in so many ways. The surprising thing was that I found out after we dined here that they had been written up glowingly in both the Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach papers. A "famous" chef will be followed. How did I learn about it? By seeing Jeff N's post in Facebook. Thank you Jeff!!! We owe you big time. The all black building is distinctive on Dixie, but small so you might miss it. There are some parking spots on the side streets and around back, but we found a free public lot a block down and walked back to the restaurant. Inside there are some kitschy signs and a wall of what looks like black and white fried eggs painted on it. There are a dozen seats at the bar and half a dozen plus tables. We came on a Saturday night, without reservations. We were lucky enough to snag a seat at the bar/counter (our preferred location, anyway). We'd seen that it was cash only so we did a bank stop first (but they have an ATM on site just in case). We were immediately greeted by friendly and knowledgeable Jay. He later told us he's the chef's brother and we had a nice laugh about nepotism and low pay. But he not only waited on us, but the entire restaurant. He was happy to answer any questions. The paper menu was dated so we knew it changed regularly. Drinks on one side; Food on the other. We decided to jump right into entrees. My husband had their spaghetti with stinky cheese and pistachios. Think very good linguine in a creamy cheesy rosemary sauce with crunchy nuts as a counterpoint. Addictive. I had their rock shrimp beignets which came with a side of lemon mayo dipping sauce. The beignets were light and airy a la Yorkshire pudding and filled with bits of rock shrimp from up the coast. The lemon sauce was the added touch that gave them character. I'm allergic to mangoes so I couldn't try their famous mango pie (made by the chef's wife) so we chose their one other dessert listed on the menu. I'd never had gooseberries. Wasn't even sure what they were, but I'm so glad we tried them. So simple, yet so delicious and refreshing. Each berry had the "husk" pulled back. You held the individual berry by the end and dipped it in the lime zested granular sugar. The husks were discarded into a bowl. After we were done with the berries, I couldn't resist dipping a finger into the leftover sugar. Yum. They don't have a phone, but you can make reservations via their website. I imagine in season they will be (are) packed. But they do take walk ins, space permitting. I'm already planning my return visit(s). Roy F. can we come here every week?

I had Jewell Bistro on my list of restaurants to frequent for a while, since at least last year. Finally, I took my girlfriend to Jewell and was glad I did. Very cool, local restaurant and bar, with booth and table seating, string lights lining the ceiling, and an ever-changing menu that's cash only -- but there is an ATM on-site for taking money out. The location, in between 8th Avenue North and 9th Avenue North on the northbound lanes of Dixie Highway, is a little tricky to find due to its black exterior and the fact there's no immediate parking outside the front entrance or on the latter street. However, there is a public parking lot (free) before the restaurant and the car wash that precedes it after you pass 8th Avenue North on the right. After which, it's a short walk past the car wash to Jewell Bistro. Service was fast, efficient, and affable. The food was dynamite. I ordered the rock shrimp beignets, which were incredibly magical, and The Burger -- yes, that's what it's called and for good reason... Because it is THE burger to have. According to the man who took our order and served us our food, the chef has been making The Burger the same way for 22 years; and it is absolutely fucking fabulous. How he prepares the meat and marinate, with the creamy sauce on the bun. So juicy, so tender, so tasty and flavorful. So fucking delicious. I was giddy with delight. My tongue was dancing in directions that hadn't been defined by science. It was magical. Very magical. Needless to say, I would return in a heartbeat. You can't beat good food joints, and Jewell is a great food joint.

    Florida Cracker Pie

Jewell Bistro is unique in every way and reminds me of pre-gentry lower Manhattan restaurants. Depending on your perspective the design could be creative or kitschy or threadbare but one thing is sure, the restaurant is comfortable and inviting and the service is excellent. Management touts their burger as one that that utilizes special cooking techniques as well as replicating the chef's burger experience while he was traveling in France. Sounds great but my burger was at best average and wasn't the juicy, transcendent culinary knockout I was expecting - not even close. Now when factoring in its $32 price and this without any sides (but for an Heirloom Tomato) makes the burger an expensive disappointment. I also tried the seafood with shrimp and this was good and what a memorable pasta dish should taste like. The dish was nuanced and at first it seemed spicy but the sauce had a nice balanced kick and this item was a winner. A chicken special looked great but was devoid of taste, however the chicken was good quality and fresh. Dessert was "Florida Cracker Pie" and this was very good and had a nice Creme Brûlée like topping. Jewell Bistro was a mixed experience and I can see some people liking its quirkiness and others not.

    Spicy fish soup

Excellent food and very nice business owners. Certainly very passionate. We had a full description of each menu item before ordering. Portion size is very good and flavor seasoning was excellent. We started with a spicy fish soup with chopped jalapenos and fresh onion as a flavor enhancer. If it was too spicy, there was a lime section to squeeze into the soup. There was plenty of fresh fish and feesh veggies in the soup. Pretty filling. I had the eggplant appetizer with toasted sunflower seeds and cilantro on it. It could be a vegan dish without the feta cheese but since I am not vegan, I went with the cheese. It was delicious and I would definitely have it again if I saw it on the menu. For our main course, the Vermillion snapper was excellent. It was a whole pan fried snapper that was deboned filets with a salad of heart of palm and kalamata olives. The texture was perfect and the fish was super fresh. I really enjoyed everything that we ordered. Our friends that dined with us each had their three meat hamburger. They said the burger was very good. The ambiance inside was romantic and it looked like they have a small space for a DJ but we had light music on in the background which was nice. The parking is interesting as they have NO parking. There is a small public lot one block south and I didn't love the neighborhood. We walked quickly to and from the restaurant as being cash only, it is obvious that everyone walking there has a pocket full of cash. Not great! As for the dining experience, it was really nice. Good friends, good service, and good food. We will come back. FYI: they have a sign saying no pictures please but sorry... I took pictures of our food.

I was having a great time, enjoying my meal and drinks, when disaster struck right at the end. I had literally just finished eating when a huge roach crawled right by my feet on the couch area. It was massive and absolutely disgusting. I jumped out of my seat so fast, thankfully I was done with my food, or I probably would've lost it completely. I didn't scream (which is a miracle because I definitely would have at home), but it was such a gross turn-off. I get that this is Lake Worth and Florida has its bugs, but come on, a roach that big in a dining establishment? That's not okay. You really need to step up the pest control. Also, the bathrooms could use some serious help. They're outdated and feel neglected, definitely in need of an update or renovation to match the rest of the cool vibe. Overall, the sushi shines, the drinks are spot-on, and the atmosphere is fun... but that roach ruined the ending for me, and the bathrooms don't help. Fix those things, and this place could be amazing. Hoping it was just a one-off bad night!
