Jiang Nan is a solid spot. Not amazing, but solid. Don't know if I would go back. Service was great and interior was nicely decorated, but food was just okay. I particularly liked the sauerkraut fish soup (generous portion size, too) but the braised short ribs didn't really feel like a good cut of short rib to me. The cauliflower stir fry with pork belly was lacking on pork belly (we only got a few piece of meat, was expecting more), but the flavor itself was good. Came on a Friday around 2 PM for lunch and was happy they seated us in a booth. The restaurant has a modern, stylish interior that does a great job of elevating the traditional Chinese dining experience. I also appreciated the thoughtful touch by the entrance where guests can help themselves to ice water or iced tea while waiting to be seated. One small suggestion would be to provide wet naps, especially for guests ordering the Peking duck since you're using your hands to assemble the wraps. The biggest highlight wasn't actually the duck itself--it was the ultra-thin pancake wrappers and the option to add pineapple. I'd never had duck wrapped with pineapple before, but the subtle sweetness and extra moisture made each bite even better. Another unexpected favorite was the cabbage in herbal chicken broth. They bring bowls so you can ladle the broth and cabbage yourself, and it was incredibly comforting with a rich, sweet umami flavor. It ended up being one of my favorite dishes of the meal. I also highly recommend the soup dumplings. Unfortunately, several of the truffle dishes were already sold out, so I tried the Braised rice with Black Truffle and Mushroom and Foie Gras instead. The rice had a cheesy texture, and because everything was mixed together, the foie gras didn't really stand out. Looking back, I would spend the $35. We also ordered the braised pork belly, even though our waiter mentioned we probably ordered too much already. He was right--we probably didn't need it. The pork belly leaned sweeter than I prefer and wasn't particularly memorable. One tip that many first-time visitors might miss: before paying on the iPad, you can sign up for their rewards program by entering your phone number. It appears you can earn points from your meal that can be redeemed for complimentary dishes on future visits. It's a nice perk, but it's tucked away at the end of the menu. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and would definitely come back for the duck, soup dumplings, and the baby cabbage in herbal chicken broth. My only suggestion would be for the staff to spend a little more time introducing first-time guests to the menu highlights and explaining features like the rewards program and ordering system. 5 stars for great service. The interior is not as swanky as I expected, but I guess, paint it black! The Jasmine cocktail was very attractive and had a taste that belied its high alcohol contact. The spicy pickled cabbage was a nice start, they just put it on the table after we ordered. I wish there was more. We had the crab/pork soup dumplings, cabbage in soup and spicy lamb with watercress. Everything was very good, but not amazing. The cabbage would have been better if they were able to keep the soup warm while we ate it. If I go back, I'll try the duck. Came here for a very early Mother's Day dinner. We made a reservation for 6 and got there promptly, and were seated. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there, leading us to question if a reservation was needed but as time passed, more and more people came. We ordered a few dishes, with the crispy beef being the item I looked forward to the most. We also got the wagyu rice bowl, beef brisket and Xiao long baos. The decor is really beautiful in this Chinatown restaurant. The service was fine. They have iPads for ordering, so the service is limited. We had Peking Duck, Egg Custard with Truffle, and Tofu with Crabmeat. Peking Duck- Good, not great. The duck itself was delicious, but the accompaniments were lacking. The cucumbers and scallions were old and dried out. They also just plopped it down on the table with no explanations or suggestions. Kinda annoying. Egg Custard- Delicious. But the time we arrived (630 dinner on a Monday), they were already out of their truffle soup dumplings, which was a bummer. We tried the pork soup dumplings and they were excellent; wish we could have gotten the soup dumpling tasting! Our favorite dish was the spicy szechuan fish, which came with a ton of glass noodles at the bottom (not obvious on the menu). We also tried the peking duck because that seemed to be their specialty, but I actually found the duck to be incredibly dry and felt like we got the scraps of the duck rather than actual meat. I really enjoyed this place - I didn't have a single bad thing! I got the passion fruit drink, which came with a milk foam and tapioca pearls. It was sweet but strong! Worth the price. This place is amazing. I agree with another yelp reviewer that this place has the best soup dumplings I have ever had (including Din Fai Tung in Taipei). We also enjoyed the free spicy cabbage to start, the sautéed loofah with edamame and mushroom, the fried chili shrimp (a tad overcooked but still so flavorful and delicious), and the dungeness crab - the meat was so incredibly tender (they were out so they ran out and bought a fresh one just for us). The only misses were the jellyfish (way too hard) and the chrysanthemum tea. Very long good looking menu so can't wait to come back and try some other dishes! So happy we found this place! We ordered the pork soup dumplings, black truffle soup dumplings, and the half peking duck. We loved the pineapple addition to the peking deck! I've had lots of peking duck in my life, but never with pineapple and it was absolutely delicious. So tender, juicy, crispy. What more could you want for peking duck? As for the soup dumplings, both were good! I would pass on the truffle soup dumplings felt like it was interesting flavor, but not particularly flavorful in general. The cripsy beef with lime sauce is a unique take on peking pork chop. It was food and definitely a dish to mix with other carbs. The soup dumplings were a disappointment. Size was kind of standard, skin was medium thickness (it's preferred to be thin) and the filling was mediocre. Flavor lacked considering it was crab. To end the evening, we ordered the creme brulee to celebrate and this was the most disappointing. It came still partially frozen in the center. The custard wasn't smooth and was near a cake-like center. I couldnt get over how icy the center of the creme brulee was. I wasn't going to raise a ruckus and ruin the birthday celebration. Service was standard like other restaurants. Not sure what happened to the standout service that's noted in past reviews but we certainly didnt. Overall, it's a fancy dining spot. I had dinner at Jiang Nan recently for a friend's birthday dinner. I'm pretty sure her husband had made a reservation because they seated us as soon as 5 out of the 6 of us showed up. I like that their menu is on an iPad and there are pictures of every dish. I'm a very visual eater, so this was super helpful. You can put dishes in the cart and then place the order on the iPad too. This is also a great functionality because it's always hard to remember all the dishes you want to order when you're in a large group. For our table of 6, we ordered: - 2 whole Peking Ducks - 1 of the duck bones in soup - 1 of the duck bones stir fried - Cold vinegar jelly fish - Walnut shrimp - Garlic string beans Everything was excellent. The ducks were really good - lots of meat - so much meat. The walnut shrimp was very flavorful as well with large shrimps. I do think service is a bit lackluster. From the sophisticated ambiance to the attentive servers to the quality of the food, Jiang Nan at Bowery is a winner! In the heart of Chinatown but they're are plenty of garages nearby. I had the lychee mangosteen martini (I think) and it was SO GOOD! We only came for a small snack so we shared the chicken truffle soup dumplings (amazing), the waygu tomato soup dumplings (great but not as tasty as the chicken truffle), the duck spring rolls (just ok but I don't love duck), and the vegetable fried rice (so simple but so perfect!). We could have kept eating because everything was so amazing. I am going back soon because it was an enchanting experience! read more
