I have been ordering from Jibaritos y Mas in the city for years. I was stoked to find out they also have a Harlem location, because I left the city for the burbs and it is hard to find good food around here. I have never dined in, only purchased take out or delivery but this place hits the mark on most items. Items I order regularly include: PR rice, carne guisada, empanadas, tostones, alcapurrias, and steak sandwiches or steak jibaritos. The only things I wasn't a huge fan of were their pinchos (pork) and the bacalaitos. I just prefer the ones I've had when visiting PR and these are a different style/flavor. Overall, the restaurant is really cute inside. They have murals on the wall, a decent amount of seating, and it looks like this location has an interesting brunch menu too. I definitely want to check that out next. The service is good, but there can be a decent wait time to pick up food if you order too early. They really don't have much of their appetizer menu available before 11 am, so you will have a wait if you swing by earlier than that. read more

Overall rating: 3.5 stars It was first time here and first impression. I didn't know it was a dine-in area. My partner and I wanted Jibarito's. I got the Cubana (which is with lechon I think and ham and cheese). My boyfriend got the grilled onions and steak jibarito. He ordered with rice and I didn't. For taste, the Puerto Rican rice was definitely a little saltier than what I would like. (I had better). The jibarito I had was filling but a little on the drier side. You do get free bread and butter while waiting. As for the experience, expect to wait a LONG time for your food. We got there 11:40am and prolly had our food 30 mins after. As a pro tip, I would order ahead and just pick up to avoid a wait. (I did see people do that too but they too were waiting so idk). The waitresses were very busy and didn't even acknowledge our table unless they brought out food. I had to literally shout and raise my hand just to get their attention to get the check. I tried to give this place a chance, but I cannot make excuses anymore. This place is not sanitary. The 2nd to last time I ordered, we found a long, sandy brown hair on one of our Jibaritos. I called the place up and they immediately knew whose hair it was and apologized and refunded the order. I decided to give them another chance, this is where things get complicated. You can order from this place on multiple platforms. I am not a fan of ordering on DoorDash and apps like that. I like to order from the place directly if I can. I always order take out and pick it up myself. Every time I come here, we always spend more than $100 tops. If you google the place and click the website to order, it immediately directs you to order from their website, which is run by the company Square. It's the same company they use in the restaurant to take and place orders, which I learned today. I also, at one point, signed up for promo emails. When you get a promo email and click it, it directs you to their website and menu on Menufy. THE TWO MENUS ARE NOT THE EXACTLY THE SAME, so take note of that. I don't remember which one, but the prices are higher on some items over the other. They also have some description discrepancies on Menufy. For example, if you order an entree, they allow you add-ons. We almost always get either Arroz con Gandules (Puerto Rican Rice,) or Arroz con Habichuelas (White Rice with Beans.) Except, on Menufy, which is where I ordered last, their description for the "white rice and beans" just says "white rice" which isn't an option on their other website. It's supposed to be white rice and beans always. If you look at the price for the "white rice" on Menufy, it matches the same price for the "white rice with beans" on the square website. There isn't even an option to get plain white rice unless you are looking in the option for extra sides. So when I orders 3 different Jibaritos, two with white rice and one with Puerto Rican rice, it was to my surprise when one of the the meals came with just the sandwhich and some plane white rice. One of the options that was supposed to have the white rice with beans came with Puerto Rican rice, so they messed up on that. I also ordered pollo guisado (chicken stew, basically) and that is usually served with white rice as well, but it came with Puerto Rican rice which was weird for us, because that's not what we expected. On the square website it allows you to choose which rice for this entree, so we just assumed, since there was not an option, the white rice and beans would be default. We thought wrong. Over all there were 3 things wrong with our order, not including the over cooked alcapurias, and the pasteles which never taste good and always taste gritty, and like they were cooked the previous day and reheated. I didn't complain about the last two, but I did call and express myself about all the rice options being messed up. They gave me two options, they would refund the rice or I can go back and pick up just some beans, even though we didn't have the rice to go with it, only for one plate. So I opted for the refund. They refunded $7.50 for two rices, and didn't refund the plate with the plain white rice because they said, "that's what the description said so that's what we gave you!" I tried calling back and explaining the discrepancies with the descriptions and they admitted that it was written incorrectly but refuse to refund me the other rice. I was just told, I won't refund you the other rice but I will be sure to tell the owner about the description being wrong. To me, refunding the $3.75 Joe they offered, was the right thing to do, but they didn't do that. It's pony $3.75, so it definitely was not about the money, but the principle of it all. I took that very small loss, we gave the food way to some people in need and decided this place will never see another dollar of ours. They have poor customer service and another location on Fullerton that was caught with a rat in the window, and when it came to light, their response was to cover the windows instead. I stopped eating there for the longest of times. Then when I found this location, I decided to give it a try thinking they would be different. Since they are run by a difference set of people. I should have learned my lesson after I found that hair in my meal the first time. I do in fact regret giving this place a second chance. read more

My friend took me to Jibarito's on Harlem on a Saturday night. The restaurant was crowded, with many people dining in and many people picking up food. We were seated right away. I ordered the bistec (steak) jibarito. The steak was flavorful and juicy. I appreciate how they were generous with the amount of meat in the sandwich; it was stuffed! The plantains were perfectly cooked; crisp but still a bit soft in the middle. My friend ordered the jibarito churrasco (marinated sirloin steak, cheese mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, and garlic on top). He said his was very flavorful. The different textures of each component of the sandwich created a solid meal. Our jibaritos also came with sides of rice and beans; both solid, but nothing spectacular. Jibarito's on Harlem is a very well known establishment in the neighborhood. The servers were very friendly, the place was clean, and they can accommodate larger groups. read more

This is some great Puerto Rican food , the first time was wonderful but my second wasn't as pleasant as they had not made the jibarito fresh but from prefried plátanos, this made it soggy. I've been coming here for years now, and on my most recent visit, I was excited to see they did some remodeling and changed the menu and had brunch type foods available. They painted some pretty, colorful new murals inside and added a coffee/drink bar. It was not very busy yet but it took forever for our waiter to come to our table to take our order. Thank goodness we had some bread and butter on the table already. I ordered the jibarito breakfast burger for myself, a coquito latte, and pancakes for my children. The jibarito burger arrived on a plain burger bun, but it was supposed to come on a plantain bun, so unfortunately, I had to wait for them to remake my burger with the plantain bun. The burger was not bad. The breakfast potatoes it comes with are tasty. My coquito latte never showed up. I asked the waiter to take it off the bill, and they were nice to bring me one complimentary anyhow. It's frozen coquito with espresso topped with whipped cream. It's super sweet, but it's not bad. The server didn't bring syrup for my kids' pancakes until much later. I will say my past experiences were not like this and were more pleasant. read more

I've had this place on my radar for a while now. I'd say it compares to Jibaritos y Mas and La Bomba. During their peak times you will be waiting about 30 minutes or so to get your sandwich. And just like the other joints, getting them to answer the phone is a hit or miss. We always order steak jibaritos with rice. This version was delicious. Fried smashed plantain used instead of bread with steak, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese in between and then covered with garlic. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was tender and then covered with shredded cheese. It usually comes with slices, which I think it's better tasting that way. The shredded cheese threw me off a bit but overall a perfectly executed sandwich. They also serve this with a tasty spicy sauce. Whenever I think Cuban or Puerto Rican food, I don't think so Spicy, but this sauce is amazing. The arroz con Gandules was also delicious. They give you plenty so this meal is very filling. Although the my favorite jibarito, I do see myself returning. Next time I'll probably order some fried plantains. read more

Jibarito here is great, tastes very authentic. They used to slobber the top of the plantain with garlic, but recently they haven't been doing that. Garlic finished this sandwhich, and even when requested for extra garlic on top that's PAID, they don't put much at all. The rice is delicious. But the toilet wasn't happy after wards. Other experiences with just the Jibarito didn't make me run to the toilet. The wait is okay and parking is sometimes hard to find. read more

My love and I checked out Jibaritos on Harlem recently to get some takeout dinner. At first, we felt like part of the legendary "soup nazi" episode on the Seinfeld show, as we heard that this was a busy place, and it can be tough to order. We were here on a Friday evening, and indeed they did have a decent number of customers ordering and picking up food (no dine-in was going on thanks to Covid-19 restrictions). They had two ladies working the counter, and so two lines formed (perhaps it would have been more logical to form one line?). Eventually one woman finished taking an order on the phone, so we were happy to place our order with her. We ordered one lechon (roast pork) and one steak jibarito (hey you must order them since they are in the name of the restaurant!) and added on one side order of Puerto Rican rice. We also selected a couple of appetizers (you can see some of them on display in a glass case at the counter). The woman said the order would take about 25 minutes to prepare, but after we returned from a quick bop around the block the order was ready to go in about 20 minutes. Everything was packed into a big paper bag for easy transport. Let's go to the jibaritos first. We enjoyed them the most, and why not when each one was packed with lots of meat. My lechon jibarito was surprisingly not too messy to eat, so they did a fine job of assembling all the ingredients. We each ate one half and saved the other half for lunch the next day. Now for the appetizers - each of the ones we picked cost only $1.50 apiece. The alcapurria is a popular Puerto Rican snack, a plaintain dumpling with some meat filling, it was good if not great. The pastelito is a fried empanada-like item, and this one was generously filled with ground beef. The sorullo is a corn fritter, sort of like a corn dog without the dog, it's a bit sweet so I'd say if you like the taste of corn dog batter then check it out. The big fail was the bacalaito, which is called a "cod fish fritter" but was served like a flat, thin and extremely hard tostada. Don't waste your money on the bacalaito - it was an inedible disc. However, do spend your money on some jibaritos. Overall, the food is pretty tasty and reasonably priced. read more

For new years we ordered lechón by the pound and Puerto Rican rice by the tray, 25 empanadas de beef, maduros. The lechón was around 10 bucks the pound. Not that bad, the taste was amazing so good. The Puerto Rican rice here is my all time favorite. They make the best rice here. The beef empanadas are good but they are missing some papa or carrots, don't get me wrong they good but it's like eating a Taco Bell beef. The maduros are good I like them with lechera and when you order here they just come with the sweet from the plátano. They are very busy all the time and staff is nice. read more

Now I know there's a location on Fullerton and I've been to that location before. My friends have told me this location is better but I cant decide because I haven't eaten at the Fullerton location in a long time. However, I was more than happy with my meal!! And only 5 min from my house!! Portions are huge. Big enough where I think you could share with someone. Me and my bf got the lechon jibarito with a side of rice. The only reason I'm giving this place the two stars is because the drinks were very good. This was my first time coming here and I'm highly disappointed.. the food was so incredibly salty that not only did we not finish it, but we also had to order a side of white rice just to stomach the few bites of the meal that we could stomach. I got the Churrasco with Mofongo which was one of the more expensive cuts of meat on the menu, and it was overly salty. My friend got the chicken with mofongo. The Mofongo was not fresh and it had a weird smoked flavor. They serve all of the Mofongo dishes with a red broth that literally taste like somebody dumped an entire bottle of adobo in broth. Whoever is seasoning, this food has lost their sense of taste. My friend got a pineapple cocktail which she really liked and I ordered the original Mojito, This was the only enjoyable part of the meal. WEEEPA FRITURA The food at this busy Puerto Rican restaurant is about as authentic as it gets. In an ongoing quest to find the best Boricua food this side of San Juan, my fiancée and I have searched far & near. There's not much outside of Humboldt Park (which is a long drive for us, not to mention fairly sketchy once the sun goes down) so thankfully we found this gem in the Dunning district of Chicago. Jibarito's on Harlem opened around October 2018, but word has since gotten out that they're the real deal. Street parking can be tough to find due to 'round the clock crowds. We've been here twice, and on both occasions there were lines out the door! Delivery, order pickup, dine-in, all equally popular. After waits of 20-30 minutes, they sat us in a corridor along the far wall that connects the front to the bathrooms in back. This space feels like an afterthought, a cold annex with black walls they just shoved some tables in. Adding some decor in here would do wonders, even if it's just a poster of Roberto Clemente. Shortly after being seated, you'll be given a small bread basket with butter. Nichole C swears that it's 'pan sobao' (a cross between semisweet Hawaiian bread and sourdough) and I'm inclined to believe her. They don't serve alcohol, but you can get a can of Coco Rico ($1) or 'parcha' (passion fruit drink, $2.50). I'm certain that the kitchen is helmed by a talented team of 'abuelitas', Puerto Rican grandmas. My girl's a big fan of the 'ensalada de camarones mofongo' ($16), a lump of smashed plantain with chilled shrimp salad. The 'arroz blancos y habichulas' ($6) are traditional white rice + beans, and taste way better than it sounds. Their 'frituras' are assorted fried foods similar to the American version of onion rings, mozza stix, and potato skins. Everything we've had has been delicious, like the 'relleno de papa' (mashed potato croquette), 'alcapurria' (banana fritter stuffed with ground beef), and 'bacalaito' (fried cod fritter). All of these were $1.25, essentially island pricing. I found their 'pincho de pollo' (chicken skewer w/bbq sauce, $2.25) to be outstanding, just like what I had in Chinchorro, Puerto Rico. The tostones (fried plantains, $2.25) were nice and crispy. Most recently, I ordered the 'chuletas fritas' (fried pork chops, $8.75) and my gringo tastebuds were most impressed. We've also enjoyed 'lechon' (roasted pork, $8.75) with a side of 'arroz con gandules' (rice w/pigeon peas & sofrito). Their steak jibarito ($6) comes with American cheese, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and onions sandwiched between two fried garlic plantains. This unique creation was just as good as Papa's Cache Sabroso. Bread = 5 Circuses = 4 Service has been dicey across both visits. They appear to be woefully understaffed, with tables going for more than 15 minutes without being bussed. Servers seem overwhelmed and can't keep up with the hungry horde of customers, so there were big gaps between ordering, being greeted, etc. In stark contrast to Cuisine de Jibarito in Melrose Park, this place has almost no decor to speak of. Aside from the large flag painted on the right wall, there's little indication that Jibarito's on Harlem is even associated with Puerto Rico. C'mon guys, a little island pride wouldn't kill ya! * TL;DR * Apart from the incredible baseball talent Puerto Rico has recently yielded in Francisco Lindor, Yadier Molina, and Javy Baez (ugh, f*cking Cubs) I knew very little about the tiny island prior to 2017, believing it was nestled somewhere between Cuba and the Cayman Islands. 2-1/2 years later, I'm engaged to a stunning Boricua and have since brushed up on my cultural awareness......not to mention my Caribbean geography. Jibarito's on Harlem is one of Nichole C's favorite restaurants, a place where she can enjoy legitimate mofongo, lechon, an alcapurria and a Coco Rico all at once. For those reasons alone, she gave them 5*. To me, five stars means there's no improvement needed, and I think that's not the case here. There exists a HUGE demand for deliciously authentic island food, as evidenced by the large crowds at all hours of the day (a good percentage of whom are Dominicanos). The food is very reasonably priced, but the dining area is bleak, seating is limited, and turnover of tables is painfully slow. I'm hoping that they'll improve on their weak areas (service, general ambiance), so I can award the full five stars on a future visit and shout 'weeee-paaaaa!' read more

Just ordered from Jibaritos on Harlem on Sunday and it was delicious. My partner and I shared 2 Steak Jibaritos, an order of Maduros and 3 Alcapurrias. The steak jibarito was amazing, I fell in love with it and I'll go back. The alcapurrias and the maduros were good too. There's street parking available. I parked across the street and was just a pick up order. My order took 20 minutes to prepare and was ready when I arrived. Briefly inside for pickup; there were a few people inside but not enough to fill the space. The seating was spread out really well. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. I have been a long time fan of this place but it seems the bigger they become and busier they become the worse their service and attitudes are. Majority of the staff barely speak to you or acknowledge you out of the bare minimum. Everyone is always so disorganized. I have ordered trays of food before but the last time I did in May they told me to show up at 6pm, I show up on time, they say just a few more minutes. This day was raining heavy, they had a water leak by the check in desk and were almost all falling, the pick ups & DoorDash food distribution was a mess. I didn't leave with my preordered, prepaid catered food until 7pm while never receiving updates other than the ones I had to fight my way up to ask. I stopped in today, brought left overs home, warmed them up later in the day and saw what appeared to me an insects leg in my rice & lechón order. I am not sure if this location continues to be part of Jibarito's y mas but the quality of the food and portions have changed significantly in the last year. We decided to give this location another chance after an average experience last time. First- do not order the pollo frito (fried chicken). It was $4 a piece and you cannot request which piece you'd like. When we got home and opened the container the chicken was breaded and honestly we probably would've had better quality from KFC and more pieces of chicken. We wanted to keep it simple and ordered arroz blanco and habichuelas. Rice is no longer the shorter grain and it tasted like it was made in a rice maker. The habichuelas was like a scavenger hunt because most of the container was watery sauce and not a nice thick sauce as you would expect from a PR restaurant. The lechon we ordered was ok but most of the container was oil and fat. The only item we enjoyed and would recommend ordering were the alcapurrias.
