We walked in what we thought was a cute hole in the wall spot. Sometimes, those be the best ones for great quality food. Anywho, we saw the Chinese food when we first walked in but it didn't look edible. Food look dry and mushy. However, that didn't matter. We really came in for the donuts. So we bypassed that and spotted them. I saw that there wasn't many left over but given it was towards the end of the day I can kind of understand why it wasn't. I also notice there was nothing covering the other side of the glass which kind of worried me about bugs entering the place and being able to easily access it. And to my worst nightmare, there it was. I thought I was just tripping at first, but it was four black specks on the regular glaze donuts. I took a closer look and the black specks started moving. It was just what I thought. Gnats were lying on the donuts hanging out so we turned around and walked out. We didn't want to intrude on what the gnats had going on. It reminded me of Friday after next the "Holy Moly Donut Shop." I get it's a hole in a wall spot but we didn't expect gnats to be the intruders. It was bad for business. I hope this helps. I'm super happy these lovely people have survived a car driving into their store and re-opened! Before their donuts were good, but now I have to say they're GREAT. We had a couple on our walk yesterday, a sugar donut and a glazed old-fashioned. The sugar donut was feather-light and didn't have even a hint of oil flavor. The glazed-old-fashioned was delightfully crunchy and wonderfully tender inside. I look forward to them opening their Chinese foot buffet! read more

At a $1 a donut, the price just can't be beaten. This will satisfy that donut craving without robbing you blind, unlike other places in the city. However, the donuts are just mediocre. The sugar donut only had a very thin dusting of sugar on it, so you're eating mostly a plain donut. The same goes for the glazed donut; it needed a lot more glaze. The custard-filled chocolate donut had enough chocolate on it, but the custard itself was a strange flavor, a little too tangy. The donut holes are 6 for $1 (again, great prices!), but they weren't shaped like holes, and also needed a lot more glaze. Overall, not a bad place for donuts given the prices, but the quality reflects the prices too. read more

Five stars are for lovely people, gorgeous shop, and tasty donuts. We've been living in SF for slightly less than a year (having moved from Australia) and love stumbling across places like this as there's nothing quite like it at home. Closed since we've been here, we always noticed it walking past and are so glad it has reopened. It forms quite a contrast to the more recent businesses around that part of Mission. I will be moving out of state in a week. This is one of the few things I'll miss. It's a hole in the wall greasy spoon that you can't beat. For my money you can't find a better cheeseburger. Fast and delicious. If you're looking for a healthy California meal, this ain't it, but if you want your soul to thank you (your heart not so much) then eat here. Simply the best. read more

Eckleburg watch over the valley of ashes between West Egg and New York City. Hundreds of people pass by this sign everyday and never even notice it or the restaurant underneath. There aren't even any reviews on Yelp of this J. Georgie location, but judging from the grimy interior, I'd bet that its been around for at least 20 years. For the select few people that do notice this sign, they are struck by it and find in it deep meaning. After a year of driving by this sign, I decided to dig deeper into the meaning behind it. Last Friday, I ventured into J. Georgie for lunch. It was pouring rain. Pathetic fallacy? Everything was sticky-- the chairs, the tables, the rice, the sauce, the donut glaze. That's the biggest impression the place made on me. Also noteworthy was the Thai karaoke-style music video of men dancing a jig, clapping their hands, and yelling "Cha Cha Cha." I think this video was on repeat the whole time I was there. Opting for the $3.75 Chinese food lunch combo of fried rice with sweet & sour chicken, the $1.00 meatballs on stick, and 12 glazed donut holes for $1.00, I managed to consume 2000 calories in 20 min for less than $6.00. It was pretty gnarly food. I don't think I'll be back to try the "Teriyaki" or "Hamburger." As for the sign, it will always hold some meaning for me. When you move into a new neighborhood you get a new lease on, if not life, many of its orbital tributaries that help form it. We moved from Noe/Mission to Potrero/Mission over the weekend and I took today as a fact finding mission. Facts Found: 1. Jim Georgie's Donuts are just fine. Donuts are the handjobs of the pastry world; they get you off but you never feel that good about it. In that respect J.G.'s wares are right on target. 2. J.G.'s burger is just right. It's from the era before a premium was placed on giant beef patties. It's got a nice spritz of crisp shredded iceberg lettuce (not so shredded as to wilt into a vegetable comb-over), tomato, thinly sliced onion, a big grill toasted sesame bun, a non-disgusting amount of mayo and ketchup and the right number of pickle slices (3). Note, this is exactly the same hamburger I would eat if I were transported to a Peoria, IL Tast-ee-Freez circa 1974. That's a good thing. The ambiance is Vietnamese roadside food cart meets Barfly and the steam table Chinese looks to be a dangerous bet. But all prices include tax. 4.95 flat got me a delicious just-right hamburger and a plentiful helping of exactly average but hot and delicious (though salt yourself) fries. I love fries and the helping was so skewed out of the proper burger to fries ratio my dog cleaned up on about 10 of them. Thank you Jim Georgie's for being exactly what I wanted you to be when I wanted you to be it. A nice welcome to the neighborhood. read more

Part of my daily commute landscape. There is hardly a morning that goes by that does not involve me talking myself out of going into J Georgie's for an old-fashioned glazed, my 'nut of choice. Their donuts have too much sugary glazing for me. The sugar is so thick and gets so crystallized it practically cuts the roof of my mouth- yet It still takes incredible will power to pass this place by. Their coffee isn't the worst you can get. In addition to the donuts, they have diversified their business by offering a whole menu of grease and oil laden Chinese food and burgers. I know people who have eaten the burgers and not gotten food poisoning. At about 4 pm, all of the unsold Chinese food gets placed into little red and white plaid food trays, lined up on a counter behind a sheet of glass, and is offered to customers for 1/2 off. The residential hotel upstairs must pump quite a bit of money into the operation. The lady of J Georgie's always impresses me with her lovely appearance. She reminds me of French women, who look good no matter where they are working. For that, I'll add a star. read more

A weekday walk of shame conspired to bring me into this rather rundown establishment. Perhaps it was a hole-in-the-wall gem! I might satisfy my fried sugar craving while also comforting my conscience with the nostalgic flavors of my youth when I would spend a dollar a day of my allowance at the donut shop next to my middle school. Some things are best left in the past. Chinese food slash donuts shops appear to be one of them. Maybe I'm spoiled by all the city has to offer. Maybe my age and experience have taught my tastebuds a better way. Whatever the reason, stale donuts and watered down coffee no longer hold my attention. I'm a J. Georgie pro. It happens to be convenient to work, and since I'm the type of person who appreciates every last droplet of sleep in the morning, I have to grab breakfast on the way. A bran muffin costs a dollar. Yeah, it's probably from Costco or the like, but it does it's job. Their croissants are decent, and their bagels too, although they are low tech - placed face down on the grill for a minute, then slabbed with a decent cream cheese. Their coffee is good for what you'd expect, and they have an interestingly large menu. In the early weekday morning this donut/savory/ethnic eatery is hopping. Professional, quick, and satisfied, the patrons of this shop are workers fueling their proletariat rites. Coffee and a raised; pancakes and extra sausage; a red bull, ice cream, and a bagel; the customers are greeted with decent, cheap food, served by a hustling, friendly family crew. read more

Ok people, I will only say this once, so listen up...a donut shop is somewhere you go to get sweet batter fried and coated in sugar or chocolate glaze. A Chinese restaurant is somewhere you go to get noodles or rice topped with meat and veggies. These two are not to be intermingled! Have you been to a Chinese restaurant that has donuts for dessert? No, you've been to donut shops that try to make ends meet by offering alternative foods, but these foods are not to be taken seriously. Stick with the donuts and you'll be safe. Nope, these stars are for the friendly service, and the willingness, despite a language barrier, to make me egg whites with no oil. That was awesome. What was even better, was upon leaving, I was cursing myself for not grabbing jelly for the toast, only to discover Jim George himself put some packets in my bag. All for $3.15. Awesome. read more

I've been coming here since the mid 90's. The best value in town. I am usually get an omelette, or eggs & toast. If I go there for lunch I'll have a cheese burger. This used to be my first choice to buy lunch since it's the only "Asian" place within a two blocks from work. However, after the last horrible experience, it's not even a consideration anymore. I had some yummy mapo tofu (tofu w/ shredded pork in a thick, spicy sauce) leftovers from the previous night's dinner. Of course being Asian means you need steam rice with every meal. I called 5mins ahead for just a simple small box of steamed rice - which they have pre-cooked already. When I went in to pick up my order, I was expected to pay at most $1, grab the box and run back to work for lunch (mind you, I only have a 30-min lunch break; 10 mins already spending going to get the rice). However, the actual experience went something like this: I walked in to some 14-year old scrawny kid at the cashier and told him I'm picking up steamed rice. He asked his dad for the price and told me $1.50 (WTF $1.50 for a small box of steamed rice?!!) . I gave him $2 and waited forever for my change. The kid didn't even know how to operate the cash register. At this point, I had no idea what happened - his dad packing the box. When the dad gave me the box of "steamed rice," I was still waiting for my $0.50 back so I had to asked. He told me it was $2.50, I was thinking "what in the world? why am I getting charged $2.50 for steamed rice?! I had no time to argue since I've been at the place for 10 minutes + another 5 minutes of walking there + another 5 minutes walking back to my workplace which leaves 10 minutes to eat. I rushed back to work, sat down and open the box.... and guess what?!! IT WAS THE VEGGIES I USUALLY ORDERED. What do an Asian girl have to do to get steamed rice from an Asian-owned place around here? Thanks for assuming I wanted the veggies. GARBAGE. Place is cash only and they have an ATM inside. The buttons were all very sticky and should've been an indicator to not eat the food there. I ordered a simple chocolate glazed donut and noticed that the glazed top was discolored. The cake itself had little dimension and not the nice fluffy, yeast risen texture. I microwaved the cold brick only to bite in and taste nothing but an olive oil soaked sponge. Terrible place. read more

I'm am new to the area because I got a new job in the mission district. It's so colorful and it has been so hard to find a good gig. . It is one of my favorite parts of town. . While walking to work I came upon this bakery that sells Chinese Food as well. What was up with that ?. I'd never seen that before . As I got closer to the store I saw this sign outside that said I could win a prize if I entered a contest that the store had going on inside. It was just the excuse I needed because I thought Chinese food and donuts were kind of weird . I had to check this out . The smell was kind of a sweet combination of powered sugar and sweet and sour pork. My style. I looked around and I liked what I saw.. I saw a form to fill out for the contest , filled it out while I eat my powered jelly. Not bad.I love powered jelly donuts with red raspberry filling. The coffee was fresh and the prices are perfect for my restrained budget. I haven't won yet..but I keep filling out the coupons. Now I take a box of donuts to work with me least once a week. I haven't tried the Chinese food yet but soon. read more
